Book Recommendation
Turtles All The Way Down
-John Green-
If I were to choose one boo only to recommend
students my age, that would undoubtedly be 'Turtles
All The Way Down' by John Green, a novel that
follows the story of a 16 year-old girl named Aza
Holmes who struggles with OCD (Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder) and an anxiety disorder. The
surface plot of the book follows Aza as she
reconnects with one or her old childhood friends,
Davis Pickett who is the son of a billionaire, named
Russell Pickett, who has recently disappeared and the
police is giving a 100,000$ reward for anyone who
has any information about him; and Aza and her best
friend Daisy are after that reward. The actual story is
about Aza as she is struggling and learning how to
live with her mental illness.
Why do I think that this book is a must read for
teenagers?
One of the biggest problems in today's society
is anxiety, depression and hatred. Anxiety and OCD,
also known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, are
things that most teenagers suffer from, but even
though most of us suffer from it, describing what you
feel and how you feel it to someone who has no idea
about what these disorders are, can be very difficult,
but John Green in 'Turtles All The Way Down' did it,
he described what happens when you struggle with a
mental disorder and what goes on inside our head
while also adding a love story to the plot.
The friendship between Aza and Daisy
represents Aza's connection with society as she is the
one who tries to help Aza to communicate and to go
on adventures, and that's how the two of them meet
Davis and his brother, Noah. Even though Aza and
Daisy have their arguments, they always support
each other and would do anything for one another
'Jesus Christ, Holmesy, you can sure hold a grudge
against yourself. You are my favorite person. I want
to be buried next to you. We'll have a share
tombstone. It'll read, ' Holmesy and Daisy: They did
everything together, except the nasty.' Daisy and
Aza's friendship evolves as the story unravels, they
begin as two teenagers who have no idea about life
and end up as two young women who know what they
want from their lives. As the story continues the two
best friends get into a car accident and when their
friendship is tested, even though most of us wouldn't
know what to do or what to say after something like
this in order to make the friendships that we have
survive, they did, and that shows us that a real
friendships overcomes even the worst events and that
gives us strength to fight for our loved ones. Their
friendship is written in a realistic way that shows us
how our best friend might not be perfect or exactly
how we want them to be but they support and love us
and that they will be there for us when we need it the
most.
