SPRING 2015 

Tang Xiaozhong has been working at 

our CI since August 2012 and during 

his time at NC State has been a strong 

addition to our CI office. Dr. Tang has 

helped grow our Chinese Proficiency 

Test (HSK/HSKK & YCT)) and Confucius 

Institute Scholarship Program. Under his 

leadership our CI has had over 150 students 

take these language tests and 14 students study in China through 

the CI Scholarship. Dr. Tang helped start both of these programs 

at CI, before his leadership on these programs we had no students 

participate in either program. Dr. Tang has worked with teachers 

and schools to share the HSK and CI scholarship so there is better 

communication and interest for these great programs. Dr. Tang has 

taught our Taichi class with over 50 interested learners as well as being 

a highly requested lecturer on Chinese culture in the community. He 

has taught and performed at our Chinese Business Class, Raleigh 

Parks and Recreation, Heritage High School and Elon University, just 

to name a few. Dr. Tang provides professionalism and dedication to all 

his programs and he has contributed greatly to our Chinese language 

and culture programs.

员工奖。自 2012 年 9 月赴任北卡州 

大孔子学院以来 , 唐晓忠老师为 

孔院注入了坚实的力量。他负责推 

广汉语水平考试和孔子学院奖学金 

项目。在他的不懈努力下 , 这两个 

项目迅速实现零的突破 , 迄今为止 

孔院已有一百五十多名学生参加了 

各类语言考试 , 十四名学生取得了 

孔子学院奖学金留学中国。唐晓忠 

老师积极与各中、小学及其教师合 

作 , 广泛宣传汉语水平考试及孔子 

学院奖学金项目 , 从而使师生们对 

这两个项目有了更清楚的了解、产 

生了更大兴趣。唐晓忠老师为州大 

教职工开设了太极课程 , 共计五十 

多人参加了这门课。他的课程广受 

学生的好评。他还为中国商务课程 

班、罗利老年协会、海瑞特高中、 

伊隆大学的学生们展示了精湛的太 

极演出。唐晓忠老师在所有项目 

中 , 均表现出极佳的专业素养和热 

忱的工作态度。他为孔院的中国语 

言及文化项目做出了突出的贡献。

AWARD Recipients 

莫莉老师 2013 年 9 月开始在北 

卡州大孔子学院工作 , 并成为 

孔院的中坚力量。莫老师改进 

了汉语课程大纲 , 使其更加符 

合学生的需要。她承担了北卡 

州立大学外语系的中文实践课 

程的教学工作 , 学生数量达 

200 多人。2015 年她作为海外 

学习中文项目的主管 , 带领 17 

位学生 , 在南京师范大学参加 

暑期中文项目。她在北卡外语 

协会上作报告 , 为当地培训了 

200 多位中文教师。她还教授 

中国文化课程 , 在孔院的各项 

文化活动中表演中国传统扇子 

舞、展示书法、剪纸和中国结 

等。莫老师是一位优秀的汉语 

教师 , 得到学生的高度认可。 

她在孔院的各项工作中非常勤 

勉投入 , 表现出极好的专业素 

养。她在北卡州大和南京师范 

大学中文项目合作中发挥了很 

好的纽带作用 , 为孔子学院的 

发展做出了巨大贡献。 

Li has been working at our CI since September 2013 and during her 

time at NC State she has been a strong addition to our CI office. Professor 

Mo greatly helped to grow our Chinese language curriculum as she reorganized 

our Chinese classes to better fit student’s needs. She worked 

with the NC State Foreign Language Department to teach the Chinese 

Conversation class, teaching over 200 NC State students. She was the 

Program Director for the 2015 Study Abroad Program to Nanjing Normal 

University, where she led 17 students to China. In 2014, Professor Mo 

received a Chinese Teaching Award from Hanban, our CI headquarters. 

She has also presented Chinese teaching methodology presentations 

at the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) 

and taught over 200 local Chinese teachers at different workshops 

in NC. She has taught Chinese language a n d 

culture, performed Chinese fan- dancing, 

and demonstrated her Chinese calligraphy, 

paper-cutting and knot-making talents 

across NC at many different events. 

Professor Mo is an excellent Chinese 

teacher, receiving high- praise from her 

students and is extremely dedicated, 

hard-working and professional in all the 

tasks assigned to her. She was a great 

liaison between the Chinese Department at 

Nanjing Normal University and NC State and 

she contributed greatly to the growth of our CI 

programs.

FAREWELL 

We have had the pleasure of hosting three wonderful visiting 

scholars from Nanjing Normal University (NNU) working at 

our Confucius Institute since August 2012. Their contract 

at our CI ends August 2015 and they will be returning to 

NNU. They have all contributed greatly to the growth of our 

Confucius Institute and we wish them all the best. 

自 2012 年 8 月以来 , 北卡州大孔院拥有了三位来自南京师范大学 

的优秀教师 , 他们是唐晓忠老师、杨阳老师和杨晓雯老师。他们 

将于 2015 年 8 月到任返回南京师范大学工作。他们为孔院的成长 

做出了极大的贡献。北卡孔院向他们致以诚挚的谢意和祝福。

Yang Xiaowen has been working at our CI since August 2012 

and since her time at NC State she has demonstrated her strength in 

creating sustainable programs and strong organizational skills. She 

received the Confucius Institute Star Employee award Fall 2014. 

Xiaowen has shown herself as a great Chinese language teacher in 

the Beginning Chinese class for the community and the “A Taste of 

Chinese” for NC State faculty and staff. She has developed curriculum 

to meet the needs of the students and goes above and beyond with her 

exceptional lesson planning for her classes. Xiaowen not only led the 

2013 Study Abroad Program to Nanjing Normal University but created 

a new curriculum and syllabus. She upgraded the program to a 6-credit 

program offering Chinese language and culture classes. This new 

curriculum makes the program more suitable for students, helps them 

to transfer more credit back to their home institutions and provides a 

better organizational structure for future directors of the study abroad 

program. Xiaowen also developed the After-School Chinese language 

program and increased collaboration between a local elementary 

school, A.B. Combs. Xiaowen works hard to accomplish the mission of 

CI and helps connect NC State and Nanjing Normal University. 

杨晓雯老师因其突出的工作成绩荣获北卡州大孔院 2014 年秋季最佳员 

工奖。自 2012 年 8 月在北卡州大孔院任职以来 , 杨晓雯老师一直表现出优秀 

的组织能力 , 在长期项目中尤为突出。同时她也是一位出色的中文教师 , 无 

论是面对社区开设的初级汉语课程 , 还是为北卡州大教职员工量身定做的 “ 品 

味中国 ” 语言文化课程 , 都得到学生的肯定。在课程设置上 , 她从学生需求出 

发 , 展现出卓越的课程设计能力。2013 年 , 她作为领队 , 带领学生参加南京 

师范大学的 “ 留学中国 ” 项目 , 设计了新的课程大纲 , 使这个项目升级成为六 

个学分的中国语言和文化项目。她设计的课程大纲更加适应学生需求 , 使学 

生获得了更多学分转换的机会 , 从而为未来的项目领队提供更为清晰合理的 

项目框架结构。她也在 AB 寇姆磁石小学开发了课外中文课程 , 增加了孔院与 

当地学校的互助合作。杨晓雯老师工作努力 , 为孔院做出了重大贡献 , 也促 

进了孔院与南京师范大学的进深合作。

Yang Yang has been working at our 

Confucius Institute since August 2012 and since her 

time at NC State she had demonstrated exceptional 

leadership and organization skills. She received the 

CI Star Employee award Spring 2014. She expanded 

the “Doing Business in China Class” for Skema 

students and developed the curriculum to offer the 

class to the public for business professionals. She 

has organized the Chinese language competition 

for 2 years and during that time has increased 

participation, organization and connection with 

Chinese language teachers. She recommended 

six Chinese writings from K-12 schools in North 

Carolina to enter the “2012 Confucius Institute 

Cup” sponsored by Hanban and 2 of them received 

awards. She organized a new project “A Bite of 

China” where she invited famous chefs from China 

to come to NC State and our Confucius Classroom, 

where over 500 people attended the event. She has 

also increased awareness of our HSK and Chinese 

language competition, by connecting with school 

Principals and teachers in NC. She has worked 

hard to increase CI awareness in the community 

through marketing and news reports. Yang Yang is 

also extremely organized and makes sure that all 

members are aware of their specific duties for each 

event. 

杨阳老师因其突出的工作成绩荣获北卡州大孔 

院 2014 年春季最佳员工奖。自 2012 年 9 月来到北卡 , 杨 

阳老师一直兢兢业业和大家并肩工作。在北卡孔院工作 

期间 , 她表现出了杰出的领导和组织能力。她为 Skema 

学生开设了 ” 经商在中国 ” 课程 , 设计了针对经济领域 

专业人士的课程大纲。她筹划、组织了两届全北卡中文 

大赛。通过积极的宣传、沟通 , 极大地促进了大赛参与 

人数和扩大了规模 , 建立起与各校中文教师的紧密联 

系。2012 年 , 她从 K-12 公立学校中推选出六篇文章参加 

了由汉办主办的 “ 孔子学院杯 ” 中文写作大赛 , 其中两人 

获得了奖励。她组织了 “ 舌尖上的中国 ” 大型活动 , 从中国 

邀请知名厨师来到北卡州大以及下设的孔子课堂 , 展示 

中国的烹饪技艺和饮食文化 , 共计有五百多人参加了这次 

活动。通过与各校校长、中文教师积极主动的交流和沟 

通 , 她促进了 HSK 考试和汉语大赛在北卡的认知度。通 

过不断的对外宣传、新闻报道 , 她提高了孔院在北卡地 

区的知名度。在每一次的活动中 , 她也表现出卓越的组 

织能力及职责分派的能力。

University majoring in American literature & 

American Civilization. She is teaching Introductory 

Business Chinese to Lenovo employees and Skema 

Business School students and will manage our CI’s 

Community Outreach & Development programs.

Zhou Wenhua is a visiting professor from 

Nanjing Normal University majoring in Teaching 

Chinese as a Second Language. Mr. Zhou has 

previously taught Integrated Chinese (Beginner, 

Intermediate, and Advanced levels), Chinese 

Writing (Intermediate and Advanced levels), and 

Error Analysis of Chinese (Advanced level) at 

Nanjing Normal University. 

He will be teaching our Intermediate and 

Advanced Chinese classes and managing our 

Teacher Training programs. He will also be 

serving as the program director for our 2016 

Study Abroad Program to Nanjing Normal 

University.

To welcome the Year of the Sheep, our Confucius Institute had 10 

Chinese New Year Celebrations from January through March. We 

partnered with schools, organizations, and government departments 

to share about Chinese New Year. We had over 8,800 people join our 

New Year activities. 

为了庆祝羊年新春 , 也为了继续推进中华语言和文化的传播 , 北卡州大孔 

子学院在羊年新春来临之际 , 陆续举办了十场文化活动 , 既有立足州大的 

宣传和推广 , 也有深入社区及周边大中小学的介绍和展示。通过一场场活 

动 , 孔院向约八千八百名师生和当地民众展示了中华传统文化之魅、文字 

语言之美 , 并得到了当地报纸、媒体的关注。

Chinese New Year for 

Goodnight Scholars 

On the evening of January 21st, Confucius 

Institute professor Tang Xiaozhong, together with 

two Interns, Cheng Ying and Zhang Jingjing, shared 

with the Goodnight Scholars about Chinese New 

Year. This two-hour activity was composed of a 

cultural lecture, a chopsticks game, and discussions 

as well as trying on Chinese costumes. Forty NC 

State students enjoyed the delicious Chinese food 

and learned new things about Chinese culture. 

After the event, everyone was eager to know more 

about Confucius Institute and looks forward to more 

partnerships. 

1 月 21 晚 , 北卡州大孔院迎 2015 新年系列活动正 

式拉开帷幕。受北卡州大 Goodnight Scholars 项目组 

的盛情邀请 , 孔院唐晓忠老师和两位实习研究生程瑛 

和张晶晶来到州大 Honors Village 的礼堂为北卡州大 

Goodnight Scholars 项目的三十多名学生精英们奉献了 

一场生动而又精彩的 “ 中国新年和中国文化 ” 讲座。活动 

内容丰富 , 幽默风趣 , 有 “ 筷子夹豆子 ” 比赛 , 也有 “ 中国 

知识 ” 抢答 , 更有中国传统服装的试穿与体验。学生们在 

品尝着美味的中国佳肴的同时 , 也收获到了不同文化带 

给他们的美感。活动后每位学生都收到了孔院赠送的小 

礼品 , 好多中国学生都争相询问孔院的汉语课程和文化 

活动的情况 , 希望以后能多接触中国文化 , 更盼望着能 

去中国学习。项目负责老师 Jessica Dormady 在表达感 

谢的同时 , 也憧憬着未来与孔院能有更多的合作。

On the evening of January 23rd, Confucius 

Institute teacher Yang Yang and an intern were 

invited to give a presentation on Chinese New 

Year and an interactive calligraphy activity. Delta 

Upsilon Fraternity has a history of over 180 

years, and its members include one President 

of the United States, eight Prime Ministers of 

Canada, Congressmen, and Nobel Prize winners. 

Confucius Institute teachers demonstrated how 

to write calligraphy, and the audience tried not 

only individual Chinese characters like “ 春 ” 

(spring) and “ 羊 ” (sheep), but also New Year’s 

blessings “ 新年快乐 ” (Happy New Year) and “ 

喜气洋洋 ” (bursting with happiness). They were 

very interested in learning how to write Chinese 

characters and having more partnerships with CI. 

1 月 23 日晚 , 应北卡州大兄弟会组织的邀请 , 

北卡州大孔院教师杨阳和实习生张晶晶为其组织成员 

做了 “ 书法迎羊年 ” 活动。兄弟会组织成立一百八十多 

年 , 其会员包括美国总统、加拿大总理、参议院、诺 

贝尔奖获得者等众多精英人士。当晚 , 在孔院教师的 

指导下 , 现场学生不仅尝试了书法临摹 “ 春 ”、“ 羊 ” 等 

单字 , 而且主动挑战新年祝福语 , 如 “ 新年快乐 ”、“ 喜 

气洋洋 ” 等。学生们对中国汉字和书法充满好奇 , 希望 

更多了解中国文字和文化。

On January 28th, our Confucius 

Institute accepted an invitation from one of 

the Center for International Understanding’s 

Confucius Classrooms, East Garner Middle 

School, and celebrated the Chinese New 

Year with over 400 students. Anna Lamm, 

Confucius Institute Director, gave an 

opening speech on Chinese zodiac signs 

and introduced the CI. Confucius Institute 

professors Dr. Tang and Yang Xiaowen 

performed Taichi and invited students 

from the audience to join them on stage 

for a presentation. Yang Yang gave a 

presentation on Chinese traditional music 

and involved students with a guessing 

activity to see which instrument played 

each piece of music. These students were 

able to distinguish the differences between 

Guzhen, Pipa, and Erhu. Learning about 

classical Chinese music can help increase 

Sino-US friendships, and just like the 

music describes flowing water high in the 

mountains amidst the beautiful Jasmine 

fragrance can last forever.

州大国际理解中心下设东加纳中学孔 

子课堂的邀请 , 来到该校与四百多名 

学生共贺羊年新春。这是北卡州大孔 

院新春系列活动的第三场。活动以孔 

院美方院长林安娜女士的发言开场 , 

生肖的话题一下子热闹了全场。孔院 

教师唐晓忠老师和杨晓雯老师表演了 

二十四式杨氏太极拳 , 而且还现场收 

起了 “ 徒弟 ”, 学生们踊跃报名。两位 

老师挑了四位 “ 徒弟 ”, 现场授课 , 学 

生们也现学现卖。孔院教师杨阳带去 

了民乐赏析节目 , 一曲曲中国经典民 

乐 , 让在场的学生觉得新奇不已 , 渴

Chinese New Year Gala 

with Triangle Area Chinese 

American Society (TACAS) 

On January 31st, the Triangle Area 

Chinese American Society of North Carolina 

(TACAS), in partnership with the Confucius 

Institute, hosted the annual Chinese New Year 

Gala, celebrating the year of the Sheep in the 

Dorton Arena of the NC State Fairgrounds, 

which attracted about 6,000 people. The 

Gala was a showcase of the Triangle’s best 

Chinese cultural talents, including dragon 

dance, Chinese martial arts, Chinese folk 

music, and dances of various ethnic groups. 

We partner with TACAS each year and this is 

a great community event that welcomes local 

government officials, including NC Secretary 

of State, and Chinese Embassy officials.

学院和北卡三角区华美协会 (TACAS) 联合举办 

的羊年新春庆祝活动在州立展览中心的多顿展馆

Chinese New Year at Raleigh Parks and Recreation 

Senior Citizens Group 

On the morning of February 5th, Confucius 

Institute professor Tang Xiaozhong and Zhang 

Jingjing gave a Chinese New Year presentation to 

50 seniors with the Raleigh Parks and Recreation 

Senior Group. The one-hour lecture introduced 

Chinese New Year, a chopsticks game, practice 

of Chinese calligraphy and trying-on Chinese 

costumes. The group was very excited to learn 

some Chinese greetings and practice Chinese 

calligraphy including “ 福 ” (blessing) and some 

poetic couplets. In addition, they tried on Chinese 

costumes and were impressed with Chinese 

culture so much that some decided to buy their 

own Chinese clothes. Gary Mock, the President 

of this group, posted his calligraphy of “ 福 “on 

his fridge so that his grandsons could also learn 

Chinese. 

2015 年 2 月 5 号上午 , 受北卡罗利老年协会之 

邀 , 北卡孔院教师唐晓忠一行二人为这个北卡地区颇 

负盛名的老年协会做了一场生动而又精彩的新年报 

告。作为 2015 年北卡州大孔院新年的系列活动之一 , 

此次活动主要分为两大部分。第一部分为中国新年和 

中国文化的基本介绍。第二部分是文化互动 , 有筷子 

夹糖比赛 , 传统服装展示与试穿以及书法练习。 

来自罗利地区各行各业的近五十位老人们在 

聆听了中国介绍的同时 , 还兴致勃勃地参加了各个活 

动。他们在感叹中国文化魅力的同时 , 更为中国书法 

与传统服装而惊艳。 

报告后每位老人脸上都带着赞叹的笑容 , 纷纷 

表示参加此次活动来得值。加利莫克更是拿着他手写 

的书法说回去要贴在冰箱上让他的孙子好好模仿。此 

次活动更大的意义在于向罗利地区的老年协会宣传了 

中国文化 , 这些曾经活跃在各行各业的精英们会不断 

去帮助推广并自身参与中国文化的宣传之中。

On February 9th, at the earnest invitation 

of Ravenscroft School, the Confucius Institute 

professors went to this prestigious private 

school in Raleigh, to give a cultural lecture to the 

whole school to celebrate the Year of sheep with 

students learning Chinese. Upon arrival, the CI 

received a warm welcome from the principal of 

6th-8th grades - Mrs. Denise Colpitts, and the 

Chinese teacher - Ginny Lam. In the magnificent 

theatre, the Confucius Institute instructors 

Yang Xiaowen and Dr. Tang Xiaozhong shared 

with 500 students about the Chinese Language 

Competition, Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), 

and about the CI Scholarship. Dr. Tang gave 

an impressive Taichi performance. Following 

the morning gathering, the Chinese instructors 

and the intern Zhang Jingjing visited Ms. Lam’s 

Chinese classroom, where they are interviewed 

in Chinese by her students. The professors 

shared with them the origin and customs of the 

Chinese Spring Festival, and taught them how 

to write “ 福 ” (blessing) with Chinese brushes. 

After a successful interview, and hand-written 

Chinese characters on their desks, the students 

had a new sense of pride and achievement in 

learning Chinese. After the Chinese class, Mrs. 

Denise Colpitts and other school members met 

with the Confucius Institute staff to learn more 

about CI projects and expressed their desire for 

future partnerships with CI.

Chinese American Friendship Association (CAFA) 

Chinese New Year Gala 

On February 14th, the Chinese-American 

Friendship Association of North Carolina (CAFA), 

in partnership with the Confucius Institute, hosted 

the 2015 Spring Festival Gala, celebrating the year 

of Sheep in UNC Memorial Hall. The great event 

welcomed the arrival of over 1,500 people, among 

them there were North Carolina Congressman 

David Price, Ping Ruan, the Counselor and Consul 

General at Chinese Embassy at USA, Elaine 

Marshall, the Secretary of North Carolina, Bailian 

Li, the Vice-provost of NC State University. These 

distinguished guests gave their sincere wishes 

for the coming year and mentioned honorably 

the achievements made by the Confucius 

Institute. During the 3 hours, the Gala captured 

the attention of the spectators with high-quality 

performances: a family performance about love, 

songs and music composed by students on 

campus, classical western music performed with 

traditional Chinese musical instruments, and 

Chinese folk dance performed by young kids, etc. 

Among them, “Opera is for Everyone” performed 

by Raleigh Smith, a former Confucius Institute 

student, together with a Chinese artist won the 

thunderous applause of audiences. 

This great event has been a showcase of 

Chinese culture and a great opportunity to boost 

the reputation of the Confucius Institute in the 

community.

扣亲情、爱情的主题 , 更贴近北美华人的真实生活。 

既有几个家庭的联袂表演 , 用音乐和视频向观众展示 

在美华人的真实生活 , 也有来自三角区大学歌唱比赛 

获奖选手的歌舞表演 , 展现在美留学生的感情生活。 

北卡沁香新民乐团用中国传统乐器演奏西方经典乐曲 

为观众们带来了耳目一新的视听享受 , 来自各团体、 

各学校的孩子们更是为观众们送上一出出或古雅朴拙 

或热闹喜庆的歌舞表演。本场演出中北卡州大孔子学 

院学生 Raleigh Smith 参与合唱的 “ 夫妻双双把家还 ” 

更是赢得了满堂喝彩。 

整场晚会精彩纷呈、高潮迭起 , 使观众们享 

受了一场视听艺术的饕餮盛宴。

NC State Chinese New Year Celebration 

and Musical Performance 

On the afternoon of February 15th, at the new NC State Talley Student Union, the Confucius 

Institute hosted over 200 people for the 2015 Chinese New Year Celebration and Chinese Music 

Performance. The event brought together current partners of CI and those interested in learning 

more about our programs. We had a Lion Dance Performance by the NC State Lion Dance Club and 

Chinese New Year musical performances by the NC- RTP Chinese Music Instruments Ensemble. We 

had special welcome remarks from: NC State University Provost, Warwick Arden, the Honorable, 

Elaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State, Representative Paul Stam, Speaker Pro Tempore 

2015-2016 Session member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state’s 37th 

House district, including constituents in Wake County, Councilman Steve Rao, At-Large Councilman 

for the Town of Morrisville, Dr. Yvonne Coston, Provost, Saint Augustine’s University, Confucius 

Classroom of NC State Confucius Institute, and Aileen Daily, Cary Academy Student, Confucius 

Institute student and participant in High School Trip to China. We had special sheep balloon 

decorations, our Panda “Bao-Bao”, and photo sessions trying on Chinese clothes for our guests to 

enjoy Chinese New Year.

Students Association (ASA) 

On February 19th, at the invitation 

of the Chinese Undergraduate Student 

Association (CUSA) and Asian Students 

Association (ASA), Yang Yang and Li Mo, 

Confucius Institute professors went to 

Witherspoon Theatre to host a booth to 

celebrate the Chinese New Year together 

with about 150 students. 

At the 12 booths highlighting different 

programs or projects, which were arranged 

according to the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs, 

the Confucius Institute booths attracted the 

attention of the participants throughout the 

event. The visitors beamed with happiness 

when they received their Chinese lanterns 

with Chinese blessings or wishes written 

by the CI teachers, and enjoyed the sense 

of achievement when they wrote down 

the Chinese characters with brushes by 

themselves. 

2 月 19 日 , 受北卡州大中国本科生联谊会 

及北卡州大亚洲姐妹会之邀 , 北卡州大孔院老师 

前往州大威瑟斯彭学生电影活动中心参加了由其 

主办的中国农历新年庆祝活动 , 约一百五十多名 

学生参加了此次庆祝活动。 

主办方将会场按照十二生肖的顺序布置为 

十二个展台 , 由不同部门负责 , 展出自己的特色 

或者开展互动游戏。由孔院负责的两个展台自从 

一进场就吸引了不少学生的眼球。孔院老师为他 

们在灯笼上题写祝福语 , 邀请他们临摹汉字 , 受 

到了在场学生的极大欢迎。从活动开始到结束 , 

孔院的展台前都围满了喜爱中国文化的学生。 

本次活动进一步拉近了孔院与州大学生的 

距离 , 加深了学生们对孔院的了解 , 极好地宣传 

了孔院的形象。

On the evening of February 23rd, the Confucius Institute non-credit students celebrated Chinese 

New Year together on campus. These 20 students demonstrated their Chinese language and culture 

ability. Some recited Chinese poems, sang Chinese songs and competed in the chopsticks activity. The 

most impressive part was when the students wrote Chinese calligraphy on lanterns. At the beginning 

of this celebration, Dr. Ding Jianning, Chinese Director of Confucius Institute, made a few remarks to 

express thanks to the students. 

美国东部时间 2 月 23 号晚上 , 农历正月初六 , 北卡州大世纪校区工程教学楼第一教学楼里不时传来阵阵 

笑声和欢呼声 , 这是北卡州大孔子学院晚间汉语课程的学生们正在举行新年晚会。本着 “ 关爱孔院学生 , 欢喜共 

贺新年 ” 的主旨 , 北卡孔院特地买来各种中国特色的传统食品 , 准备好新年贺卡和各色小礼物 , 与学生一起迎接 

羊年的到来。来自孔院初、中、高三个级别的二十多名学生济济一堂 , 各显身手 ,“ 新年好 ”、“ 登鹳雀楼 ”、“ 夹 

豆比赛 ”, 精彩节目博得阵阵喝彩。尤其当每个学生在小灯笼上写上自己的新春贺语时 , 晚会气氛达到了高潮。 

每个学生都表达了对中国文化的喜爱 , 表示自己学习汉语的热情会一直持续下去。本次晚会由孔院教师唐晓忠主 

持 , 中方院长丁建宁博士发表了热情洋溢的讲话 , 孔院教师杨晓雯和杨阳也带着自己的学生为晚会奉献了精彩的

On March 5th, Yang Xiaowen and Mo Li went to the Committee for Civil Rights at the USDA to 

celebrate the Lantern Festival, the last day of the Chinese Spring Festival. The 13 members represented 

a federally recognized class: race (Asian American/Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic, Native 

American/Alaska Native, etc.), sexual orientation (LGBT), women, veterans, and disabled. During the 

presentation, speaking from the experience of her family, Xiaowen introduced how Chinese celebrate 

the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival. Since the audience was from Department of Agriculture, she 

shared the differences in regional foods and culture. Moreover, starting from the character “ 羊 ” (Lamb), 

she mentioned the “ 美 ” (Beautiful), “ 祥 ” (Auspicious), “ 洋 ” (Ocean), and introduced the different ways of 

forming Chinese characters to let the audience get a sense of the beauty of Chinese characters. Later, Mo 

Li demonstrated and helped students to write New Year greetings with the above-mentioned characters 

to have a hands-on experience of the amazing Chinese calligraphy. After the event, many participants 

mentioned this event in their Facebook and Twitter accounts and the organizer wrote a letter of thanks to 

give their sincere appreciation.

Lantern Festival with the 

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) 

3 月 5 日 , 正值国内的元宵节 , 北卡州大孔院杨晓雯老师和莫莉老师应邀到北卡农业部民权委员会为十三 

位委员讲解中国文化。这些委员每人都代表联邦政府所认可的一种人群 , 有亚裔、西班牙裔、非裔、退伍军人 

和残疾人士。讲座开始后 , 杨晓雯老师抓住新年的尾巴 , 为他们讲解了中国的春节和元宵节的各种习俗。另外 , 

由于听众来自农业部 , 她还讲解了很多由于地理自然条件和人文等原因造成的文化习俗的差异 , 并从羊年的 “ 羊 ” 

字出发 , 介绍了 “ 美 ”,“ 祥 ”,“ 洋 ” 等汉字所体现的不同造字法 , 让听众们初窥汉字的神奇和魅力。随后莫莉老师

International Festival at Heritage High School 

On the evening of March 20th, the Annual 

International Festival was held at Heritage 

High School. More than 200 people from 20 

different countries attended this festival. The 

Confucius Institute was able to share Chinese 

cultural performances. The Taichi show by Dr. 

Tang Xiaozhong received warm applauses and 

students enjoyed trying on Chinese clothes, 

wishing they could go to China and study in 

the future. 

3 月 20 号的晚上 , 北卡海瑞特高中 (Heritage 

High School) 一年一度的国际节在该校礼堂隆重举办。 

来自周边近二十多个社区两百多名人员出席了此次会 

议。北卡州大孔子学院应邀参加了此次盛会 , 并奉献了 

精彩的节目。孔院教师唐晓忠的太极拳表演赢得了在座 

两百多名观众的阵阵喝彩 ; 而当身着中国各朝各代特色 

服装的学生出现在舞台上时 , 所有观众不禁为这些精美 

的服装赞叹不已。晚会后不时有观众跑来试穿这些衣 

服 , 希望能去中国体验真正的中国文化。

China Day at Asheboro High School 

On April 2nd, Confucius Institute teachers drove to Asheboro High School to give a lecture on 

Chinese traditional music and a Taichi performance. This was the second time that CI cooperated with 

the Confucius Classrooms with the Center for International Understanding. Confucius Institute teacher 

Yang Yang introduced the CI Chinese programs and a music presentation. Dr. Tang Xiaozhong and Yang 

Xiaowen demonstrated Taichi, both winning rounds of applause from 200 teachers and students. The 

highlight for students was when they tried on Chinese ancient costumes while demonstrating hip-hop 

dancing. After this event, students who were enrolled in Asheboro School’s Chinese program inquired 

about CI key projects like Chinese Language Competition, HSK test, CI Scholarship and Summer Bridge 

in hopes of participating in future events. 

4 月 2 日 , 孔院教师一行驱车来到 Asheboro 高中做民乐和武术文化传播活动 , 此次活动是孔子学院和国际 

理解中心下属的孔子课堂的又一次合作活动。孔院教师杨阳介绍了孔院的发展历程和中文项目 , 之后做了民乐讲 

座 , 唐晓忠和杨晓雯老师做了太极展示 , 引起在座两百多名师生的强烈反响。活动最后的传统服装展示成为整个 

活动的高潮 , 学生身穿中国古代服饰 , 或是走起猫步 , 或是摆出太极动作 , 或是热情舞动 , 把整个礼堂的气氛推 

向高潮。活动结束后 , 学校中文项目的学生纷纷询问北卡州大孔院的中文竞赛、HSK 考试、孔院奖学金和暑期汉 

语桥等核心项目内容 , 希望能了解更多信息 , 参与其中 , 在中国文化和语言上有更多深入的接触。

Chinese Music at A.B. Combs Elementary School 

On April 28th, the CI staff together with a local 

Guzheng artist Jennifer Chang visited AB Combs 

Magnet Elementary School, which was awarded 

the No. 1 Magnet School in 2014, to share Chinese 

folk music presentations to more than 900 students 

in two sessions. At the beginning of each session, 

Anna Lamm and Dr. Ding Jianning gave a short 

speech and congratulated the three prize-winners 

from A.B Combs on their achievements in the 6th 

Annual North Carolina Chinese Speech Contest. 

Then Confucius Institute instructor Yang Yang gave 

a brief introduction to six folk musical instruments 

and some classical music pieces performed with 

the instruments. Students were able to engage with 

the activity and recognize the sounds of different 

instruments. There was a Guzheng performance 

given by a student from AB Combs and Jennifer 

Chang’s performance showcased the modern charm 

of Guzheng, when she shared musical pieces from 

the Disney Movie “Mulan”.

演艺术家常筱筝来到去年曾获得全美磁石学校第一 

名的 AB 寇姆小学 , 为九百多名学生进行中国民乐讲 

座。在上下午的两场讲座中 , 林安娜院长和丁建宁院 

长分别致辞 , 并向该校三名进入中文大赛决赛并获奖 

的学生表示祝贺。在随后的讲座中 , 孔院杨阳老师简 

明扼要地介绍了六种乐器 , 引导学生聆听不同乐器演 

奏的乐曲片段 , 随后的乐器竞猜更把讲座推向了高 

潮。学生的热情参与、对乐器音质的辨析 , 和字正腔 

圆的中文发音给所有的老师留下了深刻的印象。之 

后的古筝表演中 ,AB 寇姆小学的学生带来的 “ 渔舟唱 

晚 ” 表演 , 让观众领略到了这一乐器的古韵盎然。常 

筱筝女士的表演则向师生们展现了这一古老的乐器的 

鲜活表现力。她用古筝带领学生经历了一场动画片《 

木兰》的战役 , 从一个不同的角度展现了中华音乐的 

魅力和表现力 , 把讲座推向又一个高潮。

The 12th Annual Tournament Carolina Spring 

Go Tournament, held in Raleigh on April 19th, coorganized 

by the Chinese American Friendship 

Association of North Carolina (CAFA), Confucius 

Institute at NC State, and the Cary Go Club. The 

tournament attracted 28 Go players with a wide 

range of ages and Go experience but with an equal 

amount of love for Go. Nine young players from 

Cary Chinese School’s Go classes, formed 3 teams 

to compete in the team competition. As expected, 

the team competition generated a lot of excitement, 

with young players eagerly reporting and checking 

the scoreboard during the breaks between rounds. 

CCS Team 1 of Alvin Chen, Alex Kuang and Ellen 

Zeng, and CCS Team 2 of Andy Chen, Jasmine 

Ye and Ethan Wan scored the same 9 wins (out of 

12 games), thus tied as the winners of the team 

competition. 

一年一度的北卡之春围棋锦标赛于 4 月 19 日 

在北卡州立大学举行。该项比赛由北卡华人联谊会 

(CAFA)、北卡州立大学孔子学院以及美国围棋协 

会分会 --- 凯瑞围棋俱乐部 (Cary Go Club) 共同举 

办。这项已有十二年历史的北卡之春围棋锦标赛是美 

国围棋协会认可的正式比赛。该项比赛面向所有的围 

棋爱好者 , 是整个北卡规模最大、水平最高的围棋公 

开赛。比赛成绩上报美国围棋协会 , 每位棋手比赛成 

绩计入积分 , 取得相应的美国围棋协会段位。 

本次比赛共有二十八位围棋爱好者参加。这 

项传统比赛最大的特点是参赛的小棋手多。为了鼓励 

小棋手的参赛热情 , 组织者特为小棋手们设置了团体 

比赛 , 三位小棋手组成一个队 , 每个队员的个人成绩 

累加为团体成绩 , 决出一个团体冠军。来自凯瑞中文 

学校的九位小棋手组成三支队伍参加了团体赛。比赛 

激发了选手的极大热情 , 他们在比赛间隙迫不及待地 

查看积分。最终凯瑞中文学校的两支队伍在十二支队 

伍中取得了并列第九的成绩。

Presentation at Wake Technical Community College 

Professor Mo Li gave a presentation about the Nanjing Normal University Study Abroad Program 

at Wake Technical Community College (one of our Confucius Classrooms) on September 3rd. Our three 

new CI professors, Wei Yan, Ye Danmin, and Zhou Wenhua from NNU also attended the activity and 

helped answer questions from the students. The Confucius Classroom at Wake Tech was founded in 

2014. Our CI helped to support our Classroom by sending professors to support their events. Professor 

Mo gave a summary of the 2015 Study Abroad Program with humorous videos and wonderful pictures, 

which intrigued the students’ interests. Over 20 students listened attentively to the presentation and 

then asked detailed questions not only about the 2016 Study Abroad Program, but also about the HSK 

test and the CI Scholarship. The students were fascinated by the Chinese language and culture and were 

eager to know more about the CI programs. From this activity, students from the community college 

received more information about the CI. Their knowledge about the Chinese language and culture will 

definitely promote the understanding between China and the US.

威克技术社区大学孔子课堂成立于 2014 年 , 一直得到北卡州大孔院的大力支持 , 孔院的汉语教师已有多 

人多次到该孔子课堂进行项目宣传。此次的宣传活动主要是关于 2016 年暑期的海外中文学习项目 , 莫莉老师精心 

制作了幻灯片 , 配以优美的中国歌曲和生动的图片及视频介绍 , 对 2015 年赴南京师范大学开展的暑期海外中文学 

习之旅进行了总结和展示 , 这为即将开始的 2016 年海外中文学习项目的宣传工作开了一个好头。威克技术社区大 

学约有二十余名师生聆听了讲座 , 他们深深地为中国语言和文化的魅力所折服 , 对 2016 年海外中文学习项目 , 以 

及 HSK 考试和孔院留学生奖学金项目非常感兴趣。讲座过程中和结束后学生们分别与有关负责老师进行热烈的交 

流 , 宣传活动取得了圆满成功。 

通过这次推广和宣传活动 , 北卡州大孔院的诸多交流项目收获了更多的关注 , 在北卡社区院校和民众中

Office of International Services (OIS) International Fair 

On August 13th, our CI participated in the 

annual International Fair hosted by the Office of 

International Services (OIS) at Talley Student Union. 

CI instructors, Mo Li, Wei Yan, Zhou Wenhua, and 

Ye Danmin created a display to introduce new 

international students to our programs. Over 3,000 

new students attended the event. Our Chinese 

cultural activities and language courses for the 

community greatly interested students as they 

wanted to learn more and get involved. Some of 

them even shared their own experience and life in 

China, as NC State University has many Chinese 

students. It was evident that our CI programs were 

introduced to a new group of students.

一度由国际事务办公室在泰利学生活动中心主办的国 

际文化节活动。超过三千名大学新生参加了这次活 

动。州大孔院莫莉老师及新赴任的魏燕、周文华和叶

纷纷表示了对汉语及中国文化的浓厚兴趣 , 一位州大 

教师还兴致勃勃地跟我们分享了他在中国旅行和生活 

的经历。通过本次活动 , 州大孔院向师生们很好地宣 

传和介绍了自己 , 树立了良好的形象。

Packapalooza 

Packapalooza, an annual event at NC State, has become the 

largest gathering to celebrate the beginning of a new Fall Semester. 

August 22nd, 2015 witnessed excited new students, parents and 

local residents coming all the way to Hillsborough Street to take part 

in the activity. 

This event was so attractive that the street had to be blocked 

that day for over 60,000 people to walk in and out of the place freely 

and safely. Our CI participated in the “International Zone” and 

highlighted our upcoming programs and provided Chinese language 

and culture experiences. You didn’t have to know the exact place 

of our CI booth, you just had to look for the longest queue at the 

International Zone with Chinese lanterns. Our CI booth provided 

lanterns with prosperous Chinese calligraphy written on them, 

provided Chinese costumes for participants to try on, and showed 

participants how to trace Chinese calligraphy on a blank piece of 

paper. All the CI staff and volunteers were busy writing calligraphy, 

taking pictures and posting to our Facebook page with a big smile on 

their face. The local Chinese-Americans also supported our booth and 

helped with many activities. The entire CI office not only participated 

at Packapalooza but wholeheartedly devoted themselves to the 

entire day’s activities. It is a Chinese tradition to treat friends from 

afar with hospitality and sincerity, and this is also seen in the spirit 

of Packapalooza.

2015 年 8 月 22 日 , 一年一度的北卡州大返校狂欢节在 

Hillsborough 大街再次盛大开场 , 超过六万名学生、家长、校友以及当 

地居民参加了这次狂欢节。这项活动不仅为本校学生提供了聚会狂欢的 

机会 , 扫除开学带来的紧张气氛 , 同时也给当地居民和远道而来的家长 

们打开了全新的交流平台。 

活动当天 , 整个 Hillsborough 街道临时封闭 , 一个个展位整齐 

地排列在街道两边 , 供所有人参观、咨询并参与活动。放眼望去 , 那排 

队最长的展位正是州大孔子学院的强大阵容。灯笼题字最受学生欢迎 , 

甚至到晚上七点还有学生慕名而来 , 谁不希望开学之初就能得到 “ 万事 

如意 ”、“ 一帆风顺 ”、“ 心想事成 ” 的祝福呢 ? 没有拿到灯笼的学生也不 

给自己留下遗憾 , 他们大多选择汉字临摹 , 为自己写个 “ 喜 ” 或 “ 福 ”, 照 

样欢天喜地地准备面对新学期的挑战。最受新生和小朋友欢迎的传统服 

饰试穿和拍照同样拍着长队。孔院的汉语教师及当地志愿者们在阳光下 

忙得汗流浃背 , 却依然笑呵呵地为大家提供优质服务。由于孔院与当地 

洛丽中文学校通过长期合作所建立起了深厚情谊 , 孔院的活动得到了他 

们的鼎力相助。几个在北卡生活了几十年的中文老师全家都自告奋勇地 

来展位帮忙 , 他们在言语间流露出对孔子学院的骄傲之情 , 愿意为孔子 

学院在当地的发展贡献力量。 

孔子学院在本次活动中以传统文化为媒介 , 在细微处展现中国 

文化的魅力 , 向州大师生和当地群众极好地宣传了自己 , 生动地推广了 

汉语和中国文化。

Diversity Day at Talley Student Union 

On September 10th, in celebration of the 

opening of the new Talley Student Union, we 

celebrated Diversity Day, one of the week’s many 

activities. Our CI participated in this day-long event 

with a Chinese Cultural Exhibition and participated in 

the Office of International Affairs Open House. This 

activity helped faculty, staff and students, learn more 

about our CI programs and a deeper understanding 

of Chinese culture. For our cultural exhibition the CI 

translated the keywords of the event into Chinese: 

Tradition, Diversity, Respect, Leadership and Service, 

and wrote them in calligraphy on Chinese lanterns. 

The Chinese calligraphy, attracted many people to 

line up to try the magic of writing Chinese characters. 

The CI panda mascot “Bao-Bao” was very popular 

as many people wanted their picture with him. We 

also had Chinese traditional costumes for people to 

try on and “Chopsticks” giveaways. In the afternoon, 

the Office of International Affairs had an Open House 

to showcase the different international offices on 

campus, the CI being one of the eight different offices. 

The CI has a Chinese language and culture display in 

the Talley Student Union, at the Cultural Hearth, an 

area designated to showcase NC State’s International 

culture. Our display will be up for a few month so the 

entire student body can be exposed to the growth of 

CI and its contribution to the community.

前排起了长龙。熊猫 “ 抱抱 ” 更是吸引了师生 

们纷纷与之合影留念。孔院同时展示的精美 

传统服饰也吸引了不少眼球 , 人们纷纷试穿 

留念。 

当天下午 , 州大国际事务办公室下 

属八个分支部门面向全校举办了开放展示活 

动。孔院作为下属部门之一在泰利活动中心 

设立了专门的橱窗 , 向师生们展示了近年来 

孔院的发展成长以及为州大及社区做出的杰 

出贡献 , 赢得了前来观展的师生们的交口称 

赞。

2015 Study Abroad Fair 

On September 25th, our CI 

participated at the annual Study Abroad 

Fair. Professors Mo Li and Zhou Wenhua 

had a display about our Nanjing Normal 

University Study Abroad Program. 

Students were able to learn about the 

courses offered, activities of the program 

and the benefit of participating. Bao-Bao, 

our CI Panda, also attended the event and 

was popular to hug students and take 

pictures with them. Forty-six students 

showed interest in the program, and left 

their emails for further contact. Professor 

Zhou, 2016 Program Director, will connect 

with these students and help them with 

the application process. Over 3,000 

students attended the event and had the 

opportunity to learn more about the CI 

program.

November - International Education Month at NC State University 

“International Education Week,” an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau 

of Educational and Cultural Affairs, was November 16th to the 20th. NC State University’s 

Office of International Affairs (OIA) celebrates the whole month of November with a range 

of events and programs across campus that are all free and open to the public. The theme 

this year is “International Education is for Everyone” and it is an opportunity to celebrate the 

benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The goal is to promote programs 

that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to 

study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States. The CI participated in different 

events and hosted two of our own events. We participated in the International Tea and taught 

people about Chinese tea culture. We participated in the University Pangea Race, a scavenger 

hunt to learn about Chinese culture. We hosted the “Bao-Bao the Panda Photo Contest” and 

“Wolfpack in China” Calligraphy event where students could write NC State sayings in Chinese. 

These events were highly attended as thousands of students attended the events, posted their 

pictures to our social media and learn more about CI. 

11 月 16 至 20 日是法定的 “ 国际教育周 ”, 由美国国务院下属的教育与文化事务部设立。北卡州 

大的国际事务办公室在校园安排的活动和项目贯穿整个 11 月份 , 这些活动和项目都是对公众免费开放

的茶文化。我们参加了大学的探索比赛 , 学生以寻宝游戏的方式了解中国文化。我们举行了 “ 熊猫抱 

抱摄影大赛 ” 和 “ 中国群狼 ” 书法活动。数以千计的学生参加了这些活动 , 上传了他们的摄影作品到我 

们的社交媒体上。他们通过活动更加了解了孔院。

2015 Triangle Area Dragon Boat Festival 

September 19th was the second Dragon Boat Festival in the Triangle area. This event 

was hosted by Asian Focus. The CI has partnered with them each year to be one of the main 

sponsors and to host a Chinese cultural booth. This event was also our annual “Confucius 

Institute Day” to honor CI contributions. Raleigh’s Mayor Mr. Harold Weinbrecht Jr, Morrisville 

Town Council Steve Rao, and Lenovo Executives attended the opening ceremony along with 

over 10,000 community members. 

A total of twenty dragon boat racing teams from local communities and schools 

participated in this event including the NC State Office of International Affairs. There were 

over 60 cultural and food booths, and Chinese cultural performances for the entire day. Our 

Confucius Classroom, Wake Technical Community College, sang some Chinese songs at the 

performance. The CI set up a booth on the central field to share Chinese culture by providing 

Chinese costumes for people to try on, lanterns with Chinese idioms written on them, and 

teaching people how to trace Chinese calligraphy. Our booth stayed busy the entire day 

as people waited in long lines to experience Chinese culture and were busy posting their 

photos dressed in Chinese costumes to their social media page. The CI was one of the most 

popular and attractive booths as we provided unique activities for participants. 

After rounds of fierce dragon boat competition, the NC State team won a gold medal. 

With the celebration of the annual Confucius Day combined with the Dragon Boat Festival, 

our CI was able to reach a large audience to share about Chinese language and culture to the 

local communities, enriching the concept of the annual Confucius Day with local community 

activities.

美国当地时间 9 月 19 日 , 年度孔院日来临之际 , 由北卡州大孔院 

和当地华人团体、商业组织共同协办的北卡三角区第二届龙舟大赛在凯 

瑞市盛大开幕。自 2014 年第一届龙舟赛成功举办以来 , 以宣传亚洲文化 

为核心的龙舟赛在北卡当地取得了社会广泛关注。本届大赛在秋高气爽 

的 9 月举行 , 北卡州凯瑞市市长 Harold Weinbrecht Jr. 先生、莫里斯维 

尔市政府议员 Steve Rao 先生以及联想总部的负责人员莅临现场并观看 

了比赛。当地近万民众热情参与 , 各大新闻媒体也对本次盛况进行了热 

情洋溢的报道。 

本次龙舟大赛有来自华人商业组织、各个大学和龙舟爱好者俱 

乐部等共二十支队伍参加 , 并有六十余个文化美食展台 , 和中国文化表 

演。作为协办者之一 , 北卡州大组建了一支专门队伍参加了比赛 , 并在 

中央场地搭设了一个孔院宣传台用以传播中华文化。但见赛场上 , 州大 

队员们奋力拼搏 , 闯入了决赛 ; 宣传台前 , 孔院教师们热情接待前来试 

穿中国民族服饰的当地民众 , 并为人们书写灯笼题字 , 提供书法临摹。 

活动现场孔院教师和志愿者们还向人们发放 “ 筷子 ” 等具有中国特色的 

小礼品 , 深受人们喜爱。美国民众为龙舟赛队加油助威之余 , 纷纷驻足 

在孔院宣传台边感受中华文化带来的美妙体验 , 他们有的全家簇拥在传 

统服饰架边挑选心仪的服装 , 在孔院教师帮助下穿戴整齐并拍照留念 ; 

有的排队等候书写灯笼和书法临摹 , 并把自己的作品发布在社交网站 

上。在诸多展台中 , 孔院宣传台从头至尾吸引了最多的民众。 

北卡州大队在此次龙舟赛中取得了团体第三的好成绩 , 州大孔 

院也借助此次活动宣传了中华传统文化 , 让更多的美国民众了解了孔院 

的工作和作用 , 用行动诠释了 “ 孔院日 ” 这一含义。

2015 North Carolina Chinese Speech and Writing Contests 

Since 2010 the Confucius Institute has welcomed over 1,500 participants in North Carolina to 

compete in the only Statewide Chinese Language Speech and Writing Contest. As Chinese language 

programs are growing across the State (it is currently the 4th most popular language in NC public schools, 

according to data from the NC Department of Public Instruction), this contest has seen tremendous 

growth in participation and support. The CI created this contest to encourage new language learners 

and to create a platform for students to see that students like them can study and learn Chinese. This 

year, the 6th Annual Chinese Language Contest welcomed a total of 428 participants across NC. The 

Speech Contest had 217 contestants, from 28 different schools/organizations, 16 cities, and 13 counties 

(Cabarrus, Cumberland, Durham, Gaston, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Onslow, Orange, Polk, Randolph, 

Surry, Union, Wake) in North Carolina. The writing contest had 211 students register from 22 different 

schools/organizations, 11 cities, and 9 counties (Cabarrus, Cumberland, Durham, Gaston, Mecklenburg, 

Orange, Polk, Randolph, Wake) in North Carolina. 

The key focus for this year’s competition was “innovation”. Before the competition, our CI 

surveyed local Chinese teachers for their input, visited North Carolina Science Olympiad to learn about 

their experience running a statewide competition, and held biweekly meetings to discuss innovative 

changes adopted for rules, procedures and prizes. This year we divided the speech contest into immersion 

and non-immersion Chinese programs, as this division provided a better platform to assess students’ 

language ability. We created an online component of the Chinese writing submission and created a 

new section at the speech finals which assessed student’s ability to speak impromptu on a topic of 

Chinese culture. These innovative new programs for this contest received vast approval and support 

from Chinese teachers and learners. Chinese media outlets The World Journal and China Press covered 

these events. The CI’s mission is to encourage more Chinese language learners and support Chinese 

language programs. In 2015, prizes to 39 students that competed in the Finals, totaled over $6,000. Each 

year the CI also honors Chinese language teachers as they help their students prepare for this contest. 

We provided them with certificates and over the six years of the competition have donated thousands 

of dollars’ worth of Chinese language and culture textbooks to K-12 schools in NC. We look forward to 

supporting this contest in future years and working with our wonderful school partners.

此次大赛的核心词是 “ 突破创新 ”。在比赛筹备期间 , 孔院给当地中文教师发出调查表听取一线教师的意 

见 , 来到位于北卡州大科学馆的 “ 科学奥林匹亚 “ 竞赛组委会取经。在两周一次的中文大赛筹备会中 , 孔院教师纷 

纷出谋划策 , 集思广益 , 对比赛规则、内容、评奖做了大幅度的调整。 

写作比赛增加了网上即时答题环节。今年的写作比赛中 , 选手除了上交一篇事先准备好的命题作文以 

外 , 还需参加网上答题。主办方提供五个晚间时间段 , 选手任选其一 , 在三个小时内完成每个时间段的不同作文 

题 , 网上提交。这个环节的设置能够测试出选手的真实写作水平 , 使比赛结果更具说服力。 

口语比赛的类别也划分得更为细致。选手根据其学校类别分为沉浸组和非沉浸组 , 以适应当地越来越多 

的中文沉浸项目的出现 , 也避免了非沉浸组与沉浸组共同比赛时处于劣势的局面。与此同时 , 今年的分组以学 

生的中文学习时数为标准 , 代替了过去以 “ 年 ” 为计量单位 , 分级更为精确 , 选手们在一个更为公平合适的平台竞 

争 , 收获信心 , 开拓视野。口语决赛的内容和形式更加丰富。沉浸组和非沉浸组的中高级选手需现场抽题 , 现场 

准备 , 当场作答。题目以视频、图片和文字形式出现 , 紧扣 HSK 大纲词汇 , 涉及学生家庭、学校和社会生活 , 对 

选手的临场发挥和中文功底都是极大的挑战 , 同时也鼓励选手参加 HSK 考试 , 申请孔院奖学金 , 让孔院的各个项 

目联接 , 互为促动。才艺秀在以前是助兴项目 , 但是在本次比赛中也计入总分 , 强调其与中国文化和语言的相关 

度。此项改变让才艺表演成为中国文化语言的舞台汇演。“ 白毛女 ” 舞剧片段、扇子舞、快板、葫芦丝演奏、诗歌 

朗诵、剪纸、书法、水彩画、中国地图秀、“ 小苹果 ”、旗袍秀、武术 , 尽显中华传统和现代文化的风采。才艺秀 

中最大的亮点是比赛中年龄最大的参赛选手 , 非沉浸组中级组冠军获得者北卡州大毕业生科特设计的中文学习网 

站 , 引起在场的中文学生和教师的浓厚兴趣。 

比赛的奖励面更加广泛。口语比赛由于增设了沉浸组 , 得奖人数比去年增加了 80%。此外 , 为了支持当 

地中文教师的教学研究工作 , 我们增加了一倍的比赛组织奖 , 让更多教师和学校享受到汉办提供的书籍、文化用 

品、中文软件等优秀中文资源。 

此次的创新给已经走过六个年头的北卡州中文大赛带来了突破发展 , 当地中文教师和学习者反应热烈 ,

Workshop Training for Raleigh Chinese Language 

Academy (RACL) Teachers 

Professor Mo Li gave a lecture at Raleigh Academy of Chinese Language 

(RACL) about the CI and useful tools for teaching the Chinese language. RACL 

is a weekend Chinese language school with a large number of students and 

considerable influence in the local community. Our CI has a long and collaborative 

relationship with RACL. After previously offering two successful lectures at RACL, 

Professor Mo was invited again this year to give further training to the teachers. 

She gave detailed information about all the programs carried out by our CI, such as 

the Chinese Language Competition, Chinese Licensure, HSK test, application for CI 

scholarship, and training for local teachers. With this exchange of dialogue, we hope 

that both sides can cooperate more efficiently. Most students at RACL are Chinese 

Americans, so Professor Mo shared her own teaching experience in how to express 

difficult points for Chinese American students, as well as her way of class control 

and teaching method. The workshop not only deepened the understanding between 

the CI and RACL, but also provided new opportunities for future cooperation.

关系。2014 年莫莉老师应邀为该校教师举办了两场主题讲座 , 受到了该校教师的广泛好 

评。今年莫莉老师再次受邀为老师们开办讲座。在讲座中 , 莫莉老师详细地向到场的教师 

介绍了孔院开展的全北卡中文大赛、汉语教师资格认证、HSK 考试、孔子学院奖学金申请 

以及本土汉语教师培训等主要项目 , 让老师们了解到可以从孔院获得的资源和合作机会。 

同时 , 莫莉老师还结合自身的教学经历 , 针对中文学校学生主要为华裔的具体情况 , 就华 

裔学生的汉语教学重点与难点、汉语课堂的基本教学环节、文化教学与语言教学、课堂游 

戏的组织等方面介绍了方法、分享了经验。本次活动增进了孔院和洛丽中文学校双方的了 

解 , 为今后更深入的合作创造了契机和可能。

Chinese Proficiency Tests 

(HSK/HSKK & YCT) 

In the 2015 Spring Semester, our Confucius 

Institute offered 4 Chinese Language Proficiency Test, 

3 HSK tests and one YCT test. We had 71 participants, 

which was a significant increase in our participation. 

Specifically, 15 students from Heritage High School 

participated in Level 2 and 3 tests on Feb. 5th. There 

were 2 test locations on March 28th, one test occurred 

at E.E. Waddell Language Academy in Charlotte, with 

22 participants participated in Level 3 and the other 

location at NC State had 8 participants. This year was 

the first time that we offered the Youth Chinese Test 

(YCT) test on April 4th and there were 14 participants 

taking Level 4. Our May 16 test had 8 participants. 

In general, participation in all these tests can be 

characterized by a drastic increase in participants, 

with different age levels and language proficiency. 

2015 was a harvest year for the Chinese 

proficiency tests, HSK/HSKK/YCT. In the past, we have 

not had much interest in these tests. This year we had 

over 80 participants, the HSK had 65 participants and 

YCT had 18 participants. YCT was a newly opened test 

for young learners as we partnered with local Chinese 

weekend schools to offer this test. HSK/HSKK/YCT 

tests provided standards for our students to assess 

their Chinese level and apply for the CI scholarship. 

We also had 12 students receive the CI scholarship 

this year. 

2015 年春季 , 北卡州大孔院共举办了三次 HSK 考 

试和一次 YCT 考试 , 共有七十一人次参加。应海瑞特高中 

的请求 ,2 月 5 日该高中共有十五名学生参加了二级和三级 

考试。3 月 28 日考试分两场举行。夏洛特瓦戴尔中学的的 

二十二名学生参加了 HSK 三级的考试 ; 北卡州大孔院本部 

共有十二人次参加 , 其中四人参加了 HSKK 考试 , 八人参加 

了其它级别的考试。同时 ,4 月 4 日 , 北卡州大孔院迎来了 

首次 YCT 考试 , 共有十四人参加了 4 级考试 , 实现了零的突 

破。5 月 16 号 , 有八人参加了 HSK 各个级别的考试。这几次 

考试的特点是参加人数多 , 年龄层次大 , 级别多。 

2015 年度是 HSK/HSKK/YCT 考试的丰收之年 , 

三类考试年度总人数达到八十余人 , 其中 HSK 六十五 

人 ,YCT 十八人。作为传统考试项目 ,HSK 和 HSKK 考试一 

直吸引着众多汉语学习者 ;YCT 考试是今年刚开始组织的 

青少年汉语水平考试 , 来自中小学的学生们纷纷报名踊跃 

参加 , 热情高涨。 

HSK/HSKK/YCT 考试为有志于汉语学习的美国民众 

测试和提高汉语水平提供了便利 , 为各类奖学金的申请提 

供了标准。今年有十二人得到了孔院奖学金。

2015 Emerging Issues Forum 

The Institute for Emerging Issues 

(IEI) is a think-and-do tank at NC State 

University focused on tackling big issues 

that affect North Carolina’s future growth 

and prosperity. From energy, to fiscal 

modernization, to improving our systems 

of higher education, IEI takes the lead 

in convening state leaders in business, 

higher education and government to 

address these issues early to prepare for 

future challenges and opportunities. For 

the first time, the CI partnered with IEI to 

work with local leaders to see the growth 

of Chinese language and culture. This is 

the largest NC State conference and brings 

together many business, government 

and educational leaders. This year is 

the 30th Annual IEI Emerging Issues 

Conference, with a theme of “Innovation 

Reconstructed” to see how different 

sectors can come together to adapt to 

change. This two day conference (1,500 in 

attendance) had many leaders, breakout 

sessions and policy development. This 

was a new partnership and helped the CI to 

work more with NC State and community 

leaders and for different sectors to see 

the importance and growth of Chinese 

language and culture in North Carolina.

Business Chinese for Skema Business School 

A for-credit Introductory Chinese class, 

with a Chinese business focus, was developed 

for students at the Skema French Business 

School from August 24th to November 16th, 

2015. Skema has a campus here on NC State’s 

campus. The instructor was Dr. Wei Yan from 

Nanjing Normal University. Her course was 

so popular with the students that two weeks 

into the semester Skema started to arrange 

more Chinese courses for next semester, as we 

had 19 students sign up for the class. We have 

partnered with Skema before to offer Chinese 

language workshops and Chinese Business 

for-credit classes, but this was the first 

intensive Chinese language for-credit course. 

This partnership continues to grow as over 600 

Skema students are on NC State campus and 

helps to develop our international community 

outreach. 

2015 年 8 月 24 日至 11 月 16 日 , 北卡州 

大孔子学院为 Skema 商学院的学生提供一 

门语言学分课程 - 初级汉语。Skema 商学院

子学院在当地社区推广汉语国际项目带来

Business Chinese for Lenovo 

We developed a Chinese Business 

class specially for Lenovo employees. In 

2015, we offered this new course for the first 

time from September 14th to December 2nd; 

sixteen Lenovo employees registered for this 

course. The course was taught by Dr. Wei Yan 

from Nanjing Normal University. This was 

a customized course, designed to meet the 

needs of the employees, and taught at their 

place of work to so that employees could enjoy 

the ease of learning Chinese language during 

their lunchtime. Since Lenovo works closely 

with China, and has a headquarters in Beijing, 

the employees showed great interest in 

learning Chinese. This was the first time for our 

CI to have this partnership with Lenovo and we 

look forward to developing more customized 

business classes. This program was welcomed 

by employees with requests to continue more 

classes. This class has paved a path for our CI to 

have further cooperation with local businesses 

in the Research Triangle Park area. 

2015 年 9 月 14 日至 12 月 2 日 , 北卡

Opening of Confucius Classroom at Concord High School 

On November 10th, our CI partnered with Concord High School (CHS) to open our fifth Confucius 

Classroom. CHS is a diverse, public school serving 1,150 students with a positive school climate and culture. 

Concord High has deep traditions of academic excellence, community service and athletic superiority. 

In 2012, Concord High School was recognized as one of the top 10 high schools in North Carolina by US 

News and World Report. Currently there are 31 students studying Chinese and the Confucius Classroom 

will help support and grow their Chinese program. The Opening Ceremony was attended by our US and 

Chinese Directors, Chris Lowder (Superintendent Cabarrus County Schools), Barry Shoemaker (Chairman 

- Cabarrus County Board of Education), Principal and Vice Principals of CHS, Director of the International 

Baccalaureate (IB) program and World Language teachers at Concord High School, other local school 

administrators and leaders, the students and parents. We look forward to this new partnership as it helps 

to share Chinese language and culture to a different part of the state as our CI is committed to the whole 

State of NC.

Summer Study Abroad Program 

at Nanjing Normal University 

After spending more than three 

months promoting and preparing for the 

Nanjing Normal University Summer Study 

Abroad Program, Professor Mo Li set out 

with 17 students on May 12th, 2015. 

This year’s students came from 

NC State University, Saint Augustine’s 

University, as well as a few universities 

outside of North Carolina. Students spent 

five to eight weeks at NNU studying Chinese 

language and culture. Based on each 

student’s Chinese proficiency level, they 

were placed in different Chinese classes 

where they studied with foreign students 

from other countries. On the weekends, 

they traveled to Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, 

Hangzhou, and Hongcun (in Anhui Province) 

and explore different aspects of Chinese 

culture. All of the students provided 

feedback indicating that they benefited 

from this trip through experiencing the rich 

history and civilization of China first hand. 

As the study abroad trip came to an end 

by mid-June, students said they would be 

happy to recommend this program to their 

peers. 

经过三、四个月的项目宣传、网 

上申请、护照及签证申办的前期准备之 

后。2015 年 5 月 12 日 , 十七名参加北卡州 

大孔子学院暑期海外汉语学习项目的师 

生在州大孔院汉语教师莫莉的带领下如 

期踏上了旅程。 

参加本次暑期项目的十七名师生 

主要来自北卡州大、圣奥古斯丁大学及 

外州一些大学。这些学生在南京师范大 

学进行了为期五周或八周的汉语及中国 

文化的沉浸式学习。在南京师范大学 , 

学生们根据分班考试的结果被安排进最 

适合其汉语水平的班级 , 与其他国际学 

生一起学习汉语。每个周末他们还前往 

北京、上海、苏州、杭州及安徽宏村开 

展文化探访之旅。中国各地或壮丽或秀 

美的风景、中国悠久的历史与传统文明 

给每一位学员留下了深刻的印象。经过 

数周的沉浸式学习 , 学生们的汉语水平 

取得了长足的进步 , 对中国历史和文化 

的了解也更加充分。许多学生都说他们 

会向他们的朋友推荐这个海外汉语学习 

项目。

Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for American High School Students 

During July, our CI led six High School students to attend the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp 

in China. Every year, this Hanban organized camp is much anticipated and very popular among local 

students and parents. This year, our group went to Heilongojiang Province and Beijing to be immersed in 

Chinese language and culture. While in Heilongjiang, known for its unique folk culture and folk arts, our 

students learned about paper-cutting, shadow play, fish skin painting and other characteristics of this 

province's folk arts. Students also got to tour famous local attractions such as the Central Street, Saint 

Sophia Orthodox Cathedral, Harbin Confucian Temple, Sun Island, and Polar Museum, etc. At the end of 

the camp, all camp attendees flew back to Beijing to demonstrate what they had learned through various 

forms of cultural performances. 

今年七月 , 孔子学院带领六名高中生参加了 “ 汉语桥 ” 夏令营。这一由汉办组织的活动每年都深受当地学 

生和家长的欢迎 , 吸引了大量学生参加。今年 , 他们在黑龙江和北京感受中国语言和文化。黑龙江因丰富多彩的 

民间艺术而闻名 , 同学们也亲自体验了黑龙江省几样最有特色的民间艺术 — 剪纸、鱼皮画、皮影戏等。此次夏令 

营也通过介绍黑龙江的民俗文化 , 加深了营员对东北黑龙江风土民情的了解与认知。同学们在课余时间参观了当 

地的著名景点 , 譬如中央大街、索菲亚教堂、哈尔滨文庙、大洋岛风景区、极地馆等。夏令营结束时 , 所有的营 

员齐聚北京 , 通过丰富的表演 , 展示他们的学习成果。

CI Scholarship for 4-Week Study Program 

In 2015, eight students received Hanban’s 

four-week Chinese language learning scholarship 

and studied at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) 

from July 14th to August 13th. Recommended 

by our CI, these students participated in many 

of CI events in the past and earned impressive 

scores on HSK tests. 

At NNU they enrolled in Chinese language 

courses to improve their Chinese proficiency; 

they also had opportunities to experience 

authentic Chinese culture through travelling 

to cultural spots nearby and family days with 

local Chinese families. All the students were 

extremely satisfied with their month study in 

Nanjing and hope to have more opportunities to 

study in China in the future. 

2015 年 7 月 14 日 , 来自北卡孔院的八名奖 

学金生前往南京师范大学开始了为期一个月的中 

文学习和中国文化体验之旅。这八名学生主要来 

自当地中学 , 年龄不等 , 大部分都小于十八岁。 

为了成功申请到孔子学院奖学金 , 他们都做了积 

极努力的准备 , 在孔院的各项活动中表现突出并 

在 HSK 考试中取得了优异的成绩。 

他们此次一个月的南京之行主要是为了 

提高中文水平 , 真实地体验中国文化。每天八节 

中文课让他们的中文水平得到了很大的提高 , 书 

法、太极等各项中国传统文化体验让他们对中国 

博大精深的文化有了更深入的认识 , 在南京及周 

边城市的的文化之旅更让学生们陶醉不已 , 流连 

忘返。他们都纷纷表示一定会再来中国。

Our CI continued its 

partnership with the NC State 

Foreign Language Department 

in the Fall semester of 2015 by 

teaching the Chinese conversation 

lab courses. A growing number 

of students showed their interest 

in learning Chinese language due 

to the economic development 

and the international impact of 

China. About 60 sophomores 

chose to learn Chinese as a foreign 

language, which was 20% more 

than last year. 

Professor Mo Li taught 

the lab courses this semester. 

She made a suitable syllabus, 

and designed interesting games 

and useful drill patterns for the 

students to practice their Chinese 

language. In her class, the students 

were enthusiastic to learn. All of 

them took active part in the class 

activities and made great progress 

in their conversation Chinese. 

2015 年秋季 , 北卡州大孔院继 

续和北卡州大外语学院合作 , 向选修 

汉语的学生开设了汉语实验课。随着

CI Non-Credit Chinese Language Classes 

During the 2015 Spring semester, the Confucius Institute continued to offer non-credit Introductory 

Chinese, Elementary Chinese (I), Elementary Chinese (II), Intermediate Chinese, Advanced Conversation, 

Taichi and “A Taste of Chinese” for NC State faculty and staff. The Taichi class had over 20 people attend 

the class, Dr. Tang Xiaozhong’s performance and to-the-point coaching was highly appraised by the 

students and he was interviewed by the NC State Technician. The professionalism and devotion of the CI 

instructors of all the courses received positive recognition among students. We also worked with over 50 

schools in NC that competed in our Chinese language contests. We partnered with the NC State Foreign 

Languages Department to offer the for-credit Chinese Conversation class. For all our language classes 

we had 3,066 students. 

Our CI offered evening Chinese classes: Introductory, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced 

Chinese courses in the Fall semester. These courses were open to the community and most of the 

students were working adults. Professor Ye Danmin taught the introductory and elementary Chinese 

courses and Professor Zhou Wenhua taught the intermediate and advanced course. 

We had 11 students in the Introductory Chinese course and 12 students in the intermediate 

and advanced courses, some of them were employees who had business partnerships with Chinese 

companies, and others were NC State University staff and students. Professor Ye focused on the textbook 

and introduced more information about China according to inquiries from different students. She also 

organized a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration and invited students from all levels to participate in the 

activity. Chinese students from NC State University were invited and brought some performances to 

share with our students. They were able to taste Chinese moon-cakes and snacks, appreciate ancient 

Chinese poems, and the students had a better awareness about Chinese language and culture.

2015 年春季学期 , 北卡州大孔院继续面向州大师生及本地社区开设非学分汉语课程 :《入门汉语》、 

《初级汉语 1》、《初级汉语 2》、《中级汉语》、《高级会话》。同时也专为州大教职员工量身定制太极课程及 

午间汉语课 ——《品味中国》。唐晓忠老师的太极课程有二十多名教职工参加 , 他的太极演示及教授受到学习者 

的广泛好评 , 并受到了北卡州大《技术师报》的采访。孔院教师的专业能力及热诚工作的态度受到了学生们普遍 

的肯定。今年孔院举办的中文大赛有来自北卡五十所学校的学生参加。孔院也和州大外语系合作向州大学生开设 

有学分的汉语会话课程。共计有三千零六十六名学生参加了孔院开设的汉语课程。 

2015 年秋季学期 , 北卡州大孔院面向美国民众继续开设汉语教学课程 , 包括入门级、初级、中级汉语和 

高级口语课程。其中入门级和初级汉语课程由叶丹敏老师主讲 , 中级汉语和高级口语由周文华老师主讲。 

报名入门级汉语课程的美国民众有十一人 , 其中一部分是在工作上与中国公司有业务往来的美国公司工 

程师或职员 , 一部分是有着中国情结并对中国文化有浓厚兴趣的北卡州大职员或学生。叶丹敏老师根据学生们的 

不同需求及时调整部分课程内容 , 做到了以课本教学内容为主但又不拘泥于课本 , 学生们学习热情高涨 , 对中国 

语言和文化有了更多的了解。 

报名中级汉语和高级口语课程的美国学生有十二人。周文华老师根据不同学生的需求 , 适时调整教学进 

度和扩展内容。尤其是高级口语课程更是不拘泥于固定教学内容 , 根据学生的需求作出最适合的教学安排。周文 

华老师的中级汉语和高级口语课融合汉语和文化教学于一体 , 不仅让学生学习了汉语还了解了中国文化。 

本学期 , 叶丹敏和周文华老师还利用中秋节这一传统中国节日组织所有级别的学生一起参与中秋节庆祝 

活动。活动中 , 学生们欣赏中国古代咏月诗词之余 , 还品尝了中国月饼和小吃 , 北卡州大中国学生学者联谊会的 

同学也受邀助阵表演了节目。

On March 10, 2015, the students’ cafeteria on Lee 

campus was filled with a festive atmosphere. 

Our Confucius Classroom and Great Wall Society 

provided interactive activities for students, faculty 

and staff to celebrate Chinese New Year. Activities 

included calligraphy, lantern puzzle games, and the 

touching of “fu”(word meaning happiness). 

2015 年 3 月 10 日 Lee 校区的学生餐厅充满了节日浓浓的 

气氛。孔子课堂和长城协会共同举办了本次新年庆祝活 

动 , 全校师生共同参与了书法、猜灯谜和摸 “ 福 ” 字 ( 福 

是指意幸福、快乐的含义 ) 等妙趣横生的文化活动。

stations and answered questions about Chinese 

culture. Participants were happy to learn about 

news aspects of Chinese culture.

The participants were rewarded with prizes, such as 

red envelopes with gold coins inside, small folding 

fans, and bracelets woven with Chinese characters. 

Those who participated in the calligraphy event 

were able to keep their writings. These Chinese 

New Year’s activities were interactive and fun for 

everyone.

On April 15, 2015 Central Carolina Community 

College hosted an “Activity Day” for Lee Campus. 

Activity Day is a campus holiday that gives students 

only a half day of school, free lunch provided by 

the Student Government, and an evening of booths 

that represent the different activities offered on 

campus. It’s a day filled with fun for all. 

2015 年 4 月 15 日 , 中卡社区学院主校区举行了为期半天 

的 “ 活动日 ”。全校师生除了参加各种丰富的娱乐活动之 

外 , 学生自治协会还提供了免费午餐 , 整个校园沉浸在 

一片欢乐之中。 

This year was the first year The Great Wall Society 

(GWS) participated in Activity Day. Society 

members set up two tables, one outside and one 

inside in order to attract more participants. 

今年是长城协会首次参与校园活动日。协会成员在本次 

活动的中心 — 体育馆设立了三个展台。其中两个设在体 

育馆门口 , 一个设在体育馆内。 

At the Calligraphy table, participants wrote Chinese 

blessings on paper fans and lanterns. This activity 

attracted many people. They were very excited to 

try their hands on brushes and wrote their favorite 

words for families and friends. 

体育馆门口左边的展台是书法展台 , 参与者可以选择在 

纸扇或者纸灯笼上书写中文祝福语。这个活动吸引了很 

多参与者 , 他们纷纷拿起毛笔把最想说的话送给家人或 

者朋友。 

The cupcake table attracted the most attention. 

The cupcakes were all made by a Great Wall 

Society member Rebecca Hyland. The cupcakes 

had Chinese words for light, friend, heart, and life

written on them. These cakes were very popular, 

not only because of the good taste, but also for 

the uniqueness of combining Chinese and Western 

culture.

In the afternoon, there was a tug-of-war game 

followed by a karate demonstration. More than 

40 students participated in the tug-of-war. In this 

contest of strength, team spirit and coordination 

was the key to victory.

示。40 多位学生自发分成两组开始比赛 , 对于他们来

According to the president of GWS, the society 

offered a successful event, recruited about 15 

students and shared with the entire campus about 

the Confucius Classroom. The event was successful 

because of the cooperation and support from the 

members and they look forward to the next event.

名度得以提升 , 活动当天一共招募了 15 名新成员。活动 

日的成功举办离不开每个成员的密切配合与支持 , 他们

CCCC hosts Chinese Art Exhibition 

SANFORD — The Central Carolina Community College Confucius Classroom hosted a Chinese 

Art Exhibition on Sunday, Nov. 15, featuring original Chinese art and traditional music. The exhibition 

was held at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in Sanford. 

This event showcased the original paintings of Feiyan Liu, former vice president of Sichuan 

Yangtze Art Academy. Feiyan Liu specializes in meticulous painting of flowers, birds, and figures. Her 

daughter, Guan Wang, is the CCCC Confucius Classroom instructor. 

“I was born and raised in a city called Chengdu. Chengdu is the capital city of the Sichuan 

province in China. Because of its ancient history and central location, Chengdu has long been a 

melting pot for many of the 56 different Chinese ethnic groups, their art and their culture,” Feiyan 

Liu said at the event. “It is this diverse culture that has molded me as an artist of Chinese traditional 

paintings. Being raised in Oriental traditions and aesthetic appreciation for almost 40 years, my works 

embody a strong sense of ethnicity and local style. 

“Although artists from the East and West of China vary in many ways, such as in painting 

techniques, I believe that people’s appreciation of nature, lovely birds, beautiful flowers, nostalgia 

for the good old days, and the reminiscence of one’s fading memories of the old houses, remains 

universal,” she said. 

Feiyan Liu hopes her paintings would “convey a beautiful and positive attitude toward life. So 

that people’s soul will be nurtured with honesty and kindness and the world will be filled with love 

and harmony.” 

Many participants carefully observed every piece of art. And some of them talked to the 

Chinese artist and expressed their thoughts and feelings of her amazing skills. A local female artist 

Karen Walker said she was unfamiliar with Chinese paintings, but the structure, colors and brushwork 

of Feiyan’s paintings made she feel like she had found a bosom friend. 

Musicians from the NC-RTP Chinese Music Ensemble performed traditional songs as part 

of the program. Ginevra Walker, a student of Elementary Chinese performed a Chinese folk song 

Jasmine Flower which won her a big applause. She started learning Chinese this semester. She said 

she spent almost 2 months practicing this song with the help of her Chinese instructor Guan Wang. 

Finally the hard work was paid off. She not only could understand the song entirely, but her Chinese 

was also improved. 

At the end of the exhibit, Vice Provost Jon Matthews gave Feiyan Liu a pottery made by a local 

artist as a gift from the college. Feiyan expressed she would bring this precious gift back to China. 

And she would tell her friends that there are very talented artists in North Carolina.

该艺术展展出了前长江书画院副院长刘 

非烟女士的作品。刘女士擅长中国工笔花鸟人物 

画。她的女儿王冠在中卡社区学院任教。 

刘非烟在致辞中说 :“ 我是一名来自中国 

成都的传统画画家。成都是四川省省会 , 历史悠 

久 , 文化底蕴丰厚。四川也是众多少数民族聚居 

的地方。” 她还提到 :“ 我从事绘画工作近 40 年 , 

由于长期接受中国文化及审美的熏陶 , 我的作品 

具有浓郁的民族地方特色。” 

她还说 :“ 虽然东西方艺术家在诸如绘画 

表现技法上存在明显差异 , 但我相信大众的审美 

观 , 及对大自然的热爱 , 如对美好时光的眷恋 , 

可爱的小鸟 , 美丽的花儿 , 渐渐逝去对老房子的 

回忆等都是认同的。” 

刘非烟希望 “ 通过这次画展能传递一种美 

好、积极的生活态度。让真诚、善良滋养人们的 

心灵。让世界充满和谐与爱。” 

观众们流连于展厅内 , 细细观摩品味。也 

有许多人主动与艺术家交流自己的感受 , 对她的 

精湛技艺表示由衷的赞叹。一名本地艺术家凯伦 

▪ 沃克女士表示 , 虽然她对中国绘画并不熟悉 , 

但是刘非烟作品的结构、色彩和笔法让她有如遇 

到知音的感觉。 

来自北卡三角区民族乐团的音乐家为本次 

展览带来了许多好听的传统乐曲。孔子课堂中文 

初级班学生吴京华 (Ginevra Walker) 演唱的中 

国民歌 " 茉莉花 " 赢得了满堂彩。她刚开始学习中 

文一个学期 , 为了此次表演 , 在王冠老师的指导 

下足足练习了两个月的时间。但是 “ 功夫不负有 

心人 ”, 她不仅收获了这首歌曲 , 而且她的中文 

水平也得到了提升。 

展览最后 , 教务长乔恩 ▪ 马修代表学校赠 

送了刘非烟女士一个由当地艺术家制作的陶艺品 

表示感谢。刘女士说她一定会把这个珍贵的礼物 

带回中国 , 并告诉国内的朋友 , 北卡也有非常优 

秀的艺术家。

On September 19th, Saint Augustine’s 

University (SAU) students attended the Triangle 

Area Dragon Boat Festival. The International 

Program Director, Dr. Kanton T. Reynolds, and 

the General College Director, Dr. Sevealyn V. 

Smith, took 10 students to watch the Dragon 

boat race and to experience traditional Chinese 

performances. On November 23rd (the last 

class before Thanksgiving), students in the 

Chinese classes learned calligraphy and how 

to write “love”. Students were able to bring 

these writings of “love” to their family as a 

Thanksgiving gift. 

9 月 19 日 , 圣奥古斯汀大学还参加了由 

CAFA 主办的北卡龙舟节。国际项目主管 Kanton 

T.Reynolds 博士和综合大学主管 Sevealyn 

V.Smith 博士带领十余名学生来到 Koka Booth 

Amphitheare, 一同观看了赛龙舟和歌舞表演 , 

体验了中国文化。除此之外 , 中文基础班的学生还 

将在 11 月 23 日 , 用毛笔临摹中文字 “ 爱 ”, 并将其作

On October 26, SAU was covered with red Lanterns. 

A presentation “View from the Great Wall: a student’s 

perspective of China” was held in the library for both 

students and teachers. Three students who went to China 

on the 2015 Abroad Program shared their experiences. The 

presentation included their culture shock experiences while 

in China, interesting facts, and their Chinese language studies 

experiences. One student, Aaron Thomas, showed a video he 

made about his life in China, which was widely shared among 

students. The teachers and students enjoyed the presentation, 

and showed great interest in the cultural differences and 

similarities. SAU president Dr. Everett B. Ward summarized 

that both China, Africa and America will remember history, 

and will seek more opportunities to work together. He also said 

he is proud of Saint Augustine’s students who studied abroad 

to experience the world outside of the United States, which is 

a great opportunity for the student’s future.

On February 20, 2015, our Confucius 

Classroom held and interactive language and culture 

activity to celebrate the Chinese New Year festival. 

The Chinese instructor introduced the festival, such 

as the origin of the festival, Chinese zodiac signs, and 

food served during the festival. Students watched 

some TV programs from the Chinese TV stations 

of the 2015 Chinese New Year Gala. The students 

also learned to write Chinese greeting cards and 

sent their best wishes to faculty and students. Each 

of the Chinese I and II students wrote a Chinese 

greeting expression on a card, and sent the card 

to the school President, Dr. Scott. Students felt 

amazed by the spirit and traditions of the Chinese 

New Year. “It is so cool to know how to express in 

Chinese my feelings on such a special occasion. I 

would like to share what I learned in Chinese class 

with my friends ” said one of the students. At the 

end of the event, students decorated the classroom 

and made Year of the Sheep New Year’s resolutions.

学生们学写中文祝福 , 并把他们的贺卡派送给 

学校师生 , 表达他们的良好祝愿。中文一和中 

文二的每位学员在同一张贺卡上写下一句中文 

祝福 , 代表孔子课堂把这份祝福送给校长史蒂 

文 . 斯科特博士。学员们被中国新年的传统和 

精神打动。“ 在这样的特殊时刻 , 能学习用中文 

表达祝福真的很酷 , 我要把今天所学分享给我 

的朋友 ” 一位学员表示。最后 , 师生们装饰教 

室 , 并且为自己许下羊年愿望。

In welcoming the 2015 Year of the Sheep the Confucius 

Institute hosted 11 Chinese New Year Events, and that 

was just the beginning of our busy semester. We had 

over 3,000 people study Chinese language in the Spring 

Semester with our programs and over 13,500 people 

attended our Chinese cultural events. We had over 400 

students compete in our Chinese Language Contests, 

and 80 students took the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). 

Our Confucius Institute continues to grow in participation 

numbers and also in the quality of programs that we 

provide. 

Our CI was happy to welcome three new visiting scholars 

from Nanjing Normal University this semester. We look 

forward to their new ideas and energy to continue to help 

our CI grow. We had two large cultural events, Packapalooza 

with over 60,000 participants and the Triangle Dragon 

Boat Festival, with over 10,000 in attendance. The Dragon 

Boat Festival event was also our annual “CI Day”. We 

opened two new Chinese business classes which helped 

increase our community collaboration and connection 

to our business population. We opened a new Confucius 

Classroom with Concord High School. In total for 2015 we 

had over 120,000 people attend our events and over 6,000 

students study Chinese. 

为了迎接 2015 羊年的到来 , 北卡州立大学孔子 

学院陆续举办了十一场活动 , 而这些活动仅仅 

拉开了孔院繁忙工作的序幕。去年一年 , 通过 

北卡州大孔子学院举办的活动 , 超过三千人学 

习了汉语语言文化 , 超过一万三千五百人参与 

了中国文化项目 ; 更有四百余人参加了中文比 

赛 , 八十多名学生参加了 HSK 测试。在新的一 

年里 , 北卡州大孔子学院将继续致力于吸引更 

多的人参与其中 , 并继续提供有质量的项目和 

活动。 

这个学期 , 我们很高兴迎来了三位来自南京师 

范大学的访问学者。我们期待他们给孔院的发 

展提供新的想法和活力。今年 , 我们有两个大 

的文化活动 , 新生狂欢节有超过六万参与者 , 

北卡三角区龙舟赛有超过一万名民众参加。龙 

舟赛也是我们一年一度的孔院日活动。我们今 

年新开设了两门商务汉语课程 , 为社区的联系 

和商务人群做出了贡献。我们今年又在康科德 

高中新开了一所孔子课堂。2015 年全年总计有 

超过十二万名民众参加了我们的活动 , 超过六 

千位学生学习了汉语。
