<strong>Ergo</strong> #12/ 2008 Owe Wikström är professorn i religionspsykologi som lyckats med bedrift<strong>en</strong> att skriva bästsäljare om tillvarons grundvillkor. I sin nya bok utforskar han <strong>en</strong> ny väg in i de exist<strong>en</strong>tiella frågorna: vemodet. Längtans profet En stämningsbild inleder Owe Wikströms s<strong>en</strong>aste bok ”Till längtans försvar eller vemodet i fi nsk tango”. Det är s<strong>en</strong>sommarkväll och författar<strong>en</strong> bommar ig<strong>en</strong> sommarstugan inför vintern: ”Semestertid<strong>en</strong> är till ända, havskant<strong>en</strong> öde. De barn och barnbarn som befolkat sandstrand<strong>en</strong> har sedan några veckor åkt tillbaka till stad<strong>en</strong>.” D<strong>en</strong> känsla som kommer smygande är bekant från många liknande situationer. Det är <strong>en</strong> nästan överväldigande glädje blandad med <strong>en</strong> vag, m<strong>en</strong> lika påtaglig oro. M<strong>en</strong> så under några korta sekunder får känslan <strong>en</strong> förlängning – <strong>en</strong> överton som vark<strong>en</strong> handlar om stugan eller om sommar<strong>en</strong>. Han drabbas av ”insikt<strong>en</strong> om att vi lever våra korta liv på tid<strong>en</strong>s smala näs med ett ofattbart tidshav runtom oss”. Jag mejlar för att boka <strong>en</strong> intervju med mann<strong>en</strong> bakom dessa allvarsord. Svaret kommer från ett tang<strong>en</strong>tbord utan bokstäverna å, ä och ö någonstans i östra Pyrinéerna: ”gust<strong>en</strong>, bok<strong>en</strong> har jag inte sett <strong>en</strong>s sj´lv, m<strong>en</strong> visst kan vi tala lite om d<strong>en</strong>, m<strong>en</strong> ´r i Andorra och vandrar till tisdag kv ´ll, s<strong>en</strong> ´r det <strong>en</strong> massa arbete med kulturr`det, m<strong>en</strong> stñt p`` mig lite s<strong>en</strong>are. /svettig owe” Bråddjupt allvar samsas med <strong>en</strong> slags rastlös, nyfi k<strong>en</strong> bekymmerslöshet hos Owe Wikström, ibland i samma m<strong>en</strong>ing. På tal om fi nsk tango är det förrest<strong>en</strong> inte vemod han först associerar till när vi träffas utanför Konditori Fågelsång<strong>en</strong> <strong>en</strong> gråmul<strong>en</strong> dag någon vecka s<strong>en</strong>are, utan ett klipp på Youtube. – Slå på ”Frank Zappa och ”Finnish Tango”. Han spelade <strong>en</strong> tango som extranummer efter <strong>en</strong> rockkonsert i Helsingfors. Skithäftigt. OWE WIKSTRÖM ÄR PRÄST, psykoterapeut och professor i religionspsykologi vid Uppsala universitet, känd för sin forskning om förhållandet mellan religion och olika kliniska psykologiska tillstånd, och för sina studier av bland annat Dostojevskijs författarskap. Så här i slutet av karriär<strong>en</strong> ägnar han dock det mesta av sin tid utanför universitetets murar. Han åker runt i landet och föreläser, medverkar ofta i tidningar och radioprogram och sitter i Stat<strong>en</strong>s kulturråd. Som författare nådde han d<strong>en</strong> stora publik<strong>en</strong> med ”Långsamhet<strong>en</strong>s lov”(2001), där han tar upp d<strong>en</strong> moderna människans förhållande till tid<strong>en</strong>. D<strong>en</strong> följdes av refl ektioner kring rum och resande i ”Ikon<strong>en</strong> i fi ckan” (2003) och vår ansvarighet inför våra medmänniskor i ”Sonjas godhet” (2006). ”Jag är nog <strong>en</strong> ganska rå och <strong>en</strong>kel krist<strong>en</strong> person, om jag ska rannsaka mig själv. M<strong>en</strong> jag doserar mitt budskap väldigt stillsamt.” – Alla tre böckerna är skrivna på samma sätt. Jag nyttjar det yttre rummet för att refl ektera kring inre världar. M<strong>en</strong> eftersom jag sysslar med religion tyckte jag ändå att det saknades något. Jag ville skriva om exist<strong>en</strong>tiella och andliga frågor lite mer explicit, fast utan att börja i dem. ”Till längtans försvar” beskriver han som <strong>en</strong> pamfl ett för att uppmärksamma <strong>en</strong> del av tillvaron som han tycker får för lit<strong>en</strong> plats i vår tid. – På d<strong>en</strong> mediala, kulturella ar<strong>en</strong>an ryms ganska få markörer för vemodet. Samtidigt tycker jag som gammal sjukhuspräst och psykolog att när det smäller, när man får <strong>en</strong> <strong>tumör</strong>, eller när det händer något med brorsan eller mamma, då ställer sig människan förr eller s<strong>en</strong>are ändå de här frågorna: Vad är syftet? Hur ska jag stå ut? Finns det någon m<strong>en</strong>ing? Det är <strong>en</strong> profylaktisk åtgärd att klura kring de här frågorna ibland. Vemodet är inget man bör eller kan ”bota”, m<strong>en</strong>ar han. – Exist<strong>en</strong>tiella frågor är terapiresist<strong>en</strong>ta, det är det som är poäng<strong>en</strong>. Läkare och pati<strong>en</strong>t är på samma nivå inför det faktum att man måste dö. Det handlar inte om hälsa och ohälsa, utan om grad<strong>en</strong> av närhet till exist<strong>en</strong>s<strong>en</strong>s grundnivå. Det är inte deppighet, utan realism. BOKENS FÖRSTA DEL utforskar ”vemodets anatomi”; de specifi ka situationer, ofta kopplade till upplevelser av musik eller natur<strong>en</strong>, som väcker vemodet till liv. – Det lilla vemodet – att man saknar barn<strong>en</strong>, börjar bli äldre eller hör <strong>en</strong> fantastisk låt av Sting som man lyssnade på första gång<strong>en</strong> man var kär – gränsar till <strong>en</strong> större upplevelse av att hela livet är skönt m<strong>en</strong> samtidigt på väg ifrån <strong>en</strong>. Det är så jag kommer in på de exist<strong>en</strong>tiella frågorna. Det stora, exist<strong>en</strong>tiella vemodet, eller ”vemodets förlängningar”, ringar han in med hjälp av tre begrepp; hemlöshet<strong>en</strong> – människan har ing<strong>en</strong> fast grund att stå på, inget inre GPS för att ori<strong>en</strong>tera sig i tillvaron; ändlighet<strong>en</strong> – människan måste förhålla sig till att hon <strong>en</strong> dag ska dö; och slutlig<strong>en</strong> andlighet<strong>en</strong> – fi nns det någon transc<strong>en</strong>d<strong>en</strong>t verklighet eller är allt bara påhitt? Själv bär Owe Wikström med sig dessa livsfrågor sedan sin djupsinniga tonårstid hemma i Luleå. – Grundstämning<strong>en</strong> av att tillvaron är provisorisk, d<strong>en</strong> har jag nog känt väldigt länge. En del kallar det puerilt – man kommer aldrig över d<strong>en</strong> där ungdomsperiod<strong>en</strong>. Jag är väl kvar i d<strong>en</strong>. M<strong>en</strong> jag tror att d<strong>en</strong> fi nns kvar PORTRÄTT / 17 hos många: ”Tänk när man var ung, vad man tänkte mycket. Nu hinner man aldrig tänka, man ska bara svara på mejl hela tid<strong>en</strong>.” Så när man ger ord åt de här frågorna väcker det ofta g<strong>en</strong>svar i människors inre. I bok<strong>en</strong>s tredje och avslutande del kopplar han frågeställningarna till d<strong>en</strong> religiösa föreställningsvärld<strong>en</strong>, som han m<strong>en</strong>ar tillhandahåller ett språk och symboler för att kanalisera människans längtan. – Bortom det lilla vemodet fi nns det stora vemodet. Där bortom fi nns <strong>en</strong> ontologisk törst. Människan har per se <strong>en</strong> g<strong>en</strong>eralbrist; hon är utkörd ur paradiset. Altaret eller ikon<strong>en</strong> suger upp d<strong>en</strong> här längtan och ger <strong>en</strong> sorts svar. I d<strong>en</strong> m<strong>en</strong>ing<strong>en</strong> upplever nog religiösa inte värld<strong>en</strong> bara som längtan, utan att det också fi nns <strong>en</strong> hemkomst. SAMTIDIGT ÄR HAN NOGGRANN med att äv<strong>en</strong> d<strong>en</strong> som inte har <strong>en</strong> tro ska kunna ta till sig det han skriver. – Jag är nog <strong>en</strong> ganska rå och <strong>en</strong>kel krist<strong>en</strong> person, om jag ska rannsaka mig själv. M<strong>en</strong> jag doserar mitt budskap väldigt stillsamt. Folk får säga ja eller nej. En person som absolut tycker att det här är fel ska åtminstone kunna förstå resonemang<strong>en</strong> om livsfrågor och längtan. D<strong>en</strong>na del av bok<strong>en</strong> kan ses som <strong>en</strong> uppgörelse med d<strong>en</strong> form av religionskritik som reducerar religion<strong>en</strong> till något fl ummigt – <strong>en</strong> samling ologiska föreställningar som intellektuellt oärliga människor ägnar sig åt. D<strong>en</strong> missar att det religiösa livet handlar om så mycket mer än bara ett tankesystem, m<strong>en</strong>ar Owe Wikström. – Religionsf<strong>en</strong>om<strong>en</strong>ologerna talar mycket mer i icke-kognitiva termer: ”Jag böjer mig mot altaret, jag gör ett korsteck<strong>en</strong>, jag bugar mig mot Mecka”. Man gör något med kropp<strong>en</strong>. Hela det rituella, språkspelet, det vill jag fånga. Många älskar att gå in i kyrkorummet och tända ett ljus, m<strong>en</strong> säger sig inte kunna ”tro”. Det fi nns många intellektuella ateister som inte är det emotionellt – det kognitiva korresponderar inte med vad de faktiskt gör. Han riktar <strong>en</strong> udd mot alla tvärsäkra – ateister såväl som religiösa – som tror sig ha kommit fram till det slutgiltiga svaret på livets gåtor. ”D<strong>en</strong> som har rätt brukar i regel inte ha rätt”, citerar han nobelpristagar<strong>en</strong> Imre Kertész. – Jag är emot fundam<strong>en</strong>talister åt båda håll<strong>en</strong>.
