Francisco de Miranda and the manor of Gunnebo in Sweden
Abstract
During 2011 the Venezuelan declaration of independence was celebrated
and of course Francisco de Miranda, the first hero of independence. For
example he was celebrated by Swedes in Gothenburg. Why? In 1787
Francisco de Miranda visited Sweden and its most important harbour,
Gothenburg. He has written a lot of the town and its merchants in his
diary, which is an important source of the history of Gothenburg. Here he
made the acquaintance of Mrs Christina Hall. Together with her and her
husband, John Hall senior, he visited their manor, Gunnebo. He described
the manor and its surroundings, and his description is a very valuable
source of the history of Gunnebo. The memory of the hero is honoured in
the manor, nowadays a national monument. The guests can admire a
drawing and a bust showing the famous general.
In Gothenburg in the autumn 2011 some friends of Venezuela celebrated
the Venezuelan declaration of independence and especially “generalísimo”
Francisco de Miranda. Ph. dr Göran Michanek gave a lecture about the life
of the hero, and Kerstin Nilsson told us about his visit in Gothenburg and
Gunnebo. They discussed the flag of Venezuela. Did it really get the
colours of Mrs Christina Hall? This anecdote has been much discussed, and
I will return to this topic later on.
