“I saw a person who had been shot inhis head”In December Mark Salman movedto Stallarholmen and started in ourschool. He flew from Syria in August2012, and here he tells us his story. My name is Mark Salman and I comefrom Syria, the province of Daraa. I wasborn in a village called Khabab with6000-7000 inhabitants. I studied therefrom first grade to eighth grade. But becauseof war, violence and fear I had toleave my country. The problem started in March 2011in Daraa. The people did not like theviolence and repression they had livedin so many years, so they demonstrated. The problem started when the army ofBashar al-Assad (the president of Syria)started kidnapping people from the villages. He threatened the people in ourvillage to kill us if we were not leavingthe village. Our village was in the middleof the army of Bashar and The FreeArmy (the army of the people).Tanks and bombsWhen we went to sleep we could hearguns and bombs, and when we wokeup we could hear the tanks coming andstart to fire. We could also hear warhelicopters. The Free Army was just 10 minutesaway from my house. They hadonly simple machines for war like bazookas.I could see and talk to both theBashar army people and The Free Armypeople. But I was not allowed to takepictures with my mobile or my camera. If I would have done that, i would havebeen killed. On one occasion when I came outof the house were I lived, and I wentto school, I saw a Bashar army carwith a kidnapped person from myvillage. I could se how the brotherof the kidnapped personfollowed the car and shot atthe Bashar people with hisgun. I just run away and throughmyself at the ground in my house.I was so scared.Later the Bashar army told the brotherto pay an enormous sum of moneyif he wanted his brother back. He borrowedmoney from his friends and gothis brother back. The Bashar army tookabout 20 more persons when i lived inthe village.People dyingI lived in this war for one and a halfyear. Every day, every moment the warwas going on. I could see people die. Icould see a person who had been shot inhis head. Most of the time I could go toschool, but when the war was very intense,we couldn’t go because the windowsbroke when the bombs were falling. We had electricity only 3-4 hoursevery day, we could not warm up ourhouses. It was like being outside whenwe were inside in our houses. We didnot have so much bread, and sometimeswe were very hungry.Because of the circumstancesin Syria and the war, myfather asked his brother wholives in Sweden to helpus out of the country. So we left ourvillage, andwent toLibanon.Itwasvery dangerous to leave the village. Afterthat we flew to Russia, and we stayedthere for 6 hours, and after that we wentto Sweden. We came to Sweden 22 august2012.To StallarholmenFirst we went to my uncle in Upplands-Väsby. After that to another uncle atNorsborg, and a third uncle in Södertälje, where I went to school. My familysearched for a house, and we found oneat Stallarholmen. In December I startedto go to school at Stallarholmen.I still talk to my friends in Khababevery day. The life for them is difficult. It’s cold there right now, and they havenothing to warm up their houses with. The war is still going on, every day. Ilive my life as I did before the war inSyria. I go to school, I can go outside,I meet my friends at Brogården. SometimesI miss my friends inSyria.Mark Salman8 Magazinet Nr 58 februari 2013
Sofia Siira,lärare i NO och matematik1. Magnus Öhrn,lärare i NO och matematik1. Magazinet Nr 58 februari 2013 9
