Guest Designer “Maybe I can be a light for my child in the future” Some people’s professions are inherited from their fathers. Today we are going to read the story of a profession inherited from mother. Miray Çakır Holoğlu, who spent her childhood admiring her mother’s weaving, graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, Carpet, Rug and Traditional Fabric Patterns, and received the 2nd prize in the carpet design competition organized by IHİB. First of all, can we know you briefly? I was born in 1991 in Istanbul. I graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Traditional Turkish Arts, Carpet, Rug and Traditional Fabric Patterns. I spent the last two years of my studentship life by designing for the leading companies of the sector. That school and work life intersected on of in the last two years has brought me many benefits. I reinforced my knowledge in the sector with the theoretical knowledge I received from my valuable teachers at the school. In 2013, I won the 2nd prize in the carpet design competition İHİB organized. For the last 4 years, I have been providing freelance services as a digital carpet designer in the collection preparation processes of companies. What is indispensable for you while designing? I think it is a great advantage for a designer to be able to choose the companies to work with according to their own will. Guest Designer increases the momentum of my designs. We have been collaborating for years with companies where I can express myself and realize my designs freely. Of course, the product revealed during the design process should serve a specific purpose and be functional according to which audience it will appeal to. In short, I can say it is ‘to be free’. Which trends and designers influenced you during and after your studentship life? The timeless avant-garde carpet designs of ‘The Sun of Art’ Zeki Müren impressed me greatly during my studentship years. I was very excited that he felt that art was not for the society or the art, but it is for the individual, and that he explained himself with his motifs at the desk, like us, without commercial concerns. Bold colors and his bohemian style reflect his romantic personality in every design. How did you meet the carpet? My adventure with carpet and weaving started thanks to my mother. When I was a kid, my mother was a home-based woven fabric designer. Sketches, paints, yarn-fabric material samples were never missing on the big desk in our house, and most of my secondary school life was spent admiring our mother’s weaving on the tiny loom. Later, I learned to interpret the principles of color, form, balance and integrity in another language by studying fashion design in high school. My mother, who discovered my interest and talent in art, guided me very well at this point. Now, while I am working on the computer at home, my 5-year-old son sits next to me, and I see my own childhood when he makes logical comments and tries to chat with me about my designs. Maybe in the future I can be a light for my child. What steps do you follow while designing a carpet? Throughout my design life, I paid attention to the importance of applicability and usability in pattern designs and paid attention to these two criteria in my designs. Before starting a design, it is necessary to determine which market that carpet will serve. It is because colors and patterns differ according to the region to be marketed. The most important issue in digital carpet is definitely design. Because the material used does not contain different materials as in other woven carpets. I can say that my biggest secret is to provide those amorphous transitions in the digital environment and to make the audience feel. Furthermore, the 8 or 10 color limitation used in machine carpets is not available in digital carpets. There is an amazing eternity in the digital world. However, the colors I use are root dye tones obtained from plants that give color such as walnut, quince, pomegranate, buckthorn and acorn. I’m trying to make a two-dimensional surface three-dimensional by adding lots of trams and wears. The most delicate aspect of my job is to dilemma the audience for my exhibited design as ‘Is this carpet a woven carpet or a digital carpet?’ and to make this illusion until the product is touched by the audience. How do you interpret the recent interest in digital carpet as a designer? In today’s era, it is very easy to access to the digital carpet. Now the consumer does not want to examine a product that he wants to buy for his home. Since the digital carpet is also very good in terms of price performance, people buy it as if they buy a throw pillow for their home, thinking maybe I will buy a new one next year. In addition, that it is antibacterial and it is washable in the machine can be one of its most attractive features. Finally, what would you like to add? In the future, our present will be the past.
