Report on MISTiA’s Activities in 2008– Executive Summary in EnglishThe <strong>Małopolski</strong> Institute of Local Government and Administration (MISTiA) in Krakow – the centre of the Foundation in Supportfor Local Democracy (the FSLD) is one of the largest NGOs in the Małopolska Region. We are seated in a building at ul.Szlak73a in Krakow. Since 1997, we have had a subbranch in the city of Tarnów.Since our foundation in January 1991, we have been working in support for developing the main civic state sector and promotingthe idea of partner collaboration at the regional and local level. We implement the objective by creating the opportunities forimproving management methods in the public administration, NGOs as well as in the SME and supporting those willing to starttheir own businesses. The activities of MISTiA are not only oriented towards transferring know-how and improvement of skills,but also towards exchange of experience and promotion of management success stories.Because of the scale, variety and profile of our activities, our Krakow seat has become an non-political centre of concentratedactivities in support for local government development well-known and recognised in Poland; a venue of meetings and workactivities of the representatives of local government from the Region of Małopolska.Our mission is to support individuals, organisations and groups participating in building and promoting civil societyand state.The Institute is active in the following fields: training, project implementation and management, consulting and advisory services,research activity within the framework of the Centre for Strategic Analyses and the operation of forums representing variousprofessional groups. Furthermore, MISTiA operates as a business entity generating income mainly from renting hotel roomsand conference and meeting rooms.Our services are up to the highest standards as evidenced by certificates and awards received by MISTiA. The Institute hasbeen awarded the EN ISO 9001:2000 Certificate from TUV CERT for introduction and application of a quality managementsystem in educational services, preparation and implementation of projects, consulting, advisory and analyses as well asinformation services.In addition, since 1996 we have been registered in the National Service System, which is a NGO network specialising in provisionof a variety of services to entrepreneurs and business start-ups.As a field unit of the <strong>Małopolski</strong> Institute of the Local Government and Administration has been entered to the register of traininginstitutions of the Regional Labour Office in Warsaw. The Foundation for Development of Local Democracy is also a memberof the Polish Chamber of Training Firms.The activities of the Foundation, the “parent” organisation of MISTiA, were recognised with the following awards and prizes:– 1995, the UN Habitat Scroll of Honour for “the leadership in strengthening local democracy and contribution to buildinga better life environment for all citizens in Poland by promotion of an effective and transparent local government, strengtheninglocal authorities and civic activity”,– in 2000, a prestigious Pro Publico Bono award,– in 2004, the title of the NGO of CEE, awarded by the members of the Economic Forum and the Diploma of Honour in thecategory of NGOs working in support of agreement in CEE.TrainingThe basic activity of MISTiA is provision of high quality training services. In 2008, 6,416 persons participated in various formsof training, including 3,636 representatives of local government administration, 2,780 representatives of NGOs and SMEsectors.Our training is addressed predominantly to the public administration. So far, our training offer tackled such issues as organisationand operation of offices, local finance, local government personnel as well as more specialised issues e.g. spatial planning andreal property, transport, construction and municipal administration.ProjectsIn 2008, we implemented 19 projects. Our largest contracting authorities (grant sponsors) include: the Polish Agency forDevelopment of Enterprise, the Cooperation Fund Foundation, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland,the Regional Labour Office and the Małopolska Region. The project focused primarily on supporting entrepreneurship,development of civic society and supporting local government development in CEE.
