The UAE opportunities to develop<br />

the yachts sectors<br />

The prosperous yacht manufacturing<br />

industry indicates an affluent economy in<br />

any country; however people will not be<br />

able to attain luxurious items unless they<br />

have fulfilled the basic life needs.<br />

Thankfully, the UAE is considered as<br />

one of the main countries in the region<br />

mastering the boats and yachts industry,<br />

but the area is still large for innovation<br />

and development. The sector does not<br />

lack manufacturing companies as the UAE<br />

contains some of the best yacht manufacturers<br />

that export their products globally.<br />

Moreover, many international yacht<br />

manufacturing companies have chosen<br />

the UAE that is rich in skills and expertise<br />

to open branches and expand their business<br />

scope.<br />

However, the sector needs to meet the<br />

requirements of the yacht owner after<br />

sale, mainly suitable berths to retain their<br />

boats and yachts at affordable prices,<br />

especially the luxurious ones. On the other<br />

note, maintenance facilities with large<br />

cranes that are capable of handling large<br />

and luxurious yachts needs to be developed<br />

as well.<br />

We hope that the real estate companies<br />

currently developing waterfront projects<br />

will fulfill the needs in the industry.<br />

We also hope that yacht and national boat<br />

companies will participate in planning and<br />

studying these projects in order to ensure<br />

that we have an integrated global yacht<br />

industry and to be the best maritime destination.<br />

اإلمارات وفرص تطوير<br />

قطاع اليخوت والمرافئ<br />

تعتبر صناعة اليخوت وازدهارها من عالمات<br />

االزدهار القتصاد الدولة،‏ ولكن قدرة الناس على<br />

اقتناء السلع الفاخرة ال يكون إال بعد االكتفاء من<br />

االحتياجات األساسية ووجود فائض يف الدخل.‏<br />

وبحمد هللا فإن الدولة تعتبر من المحطات<br />

اإلقليمية الهامة يف مجال صناعة قوارب النزهة<br />

واليخوت،‏ ولكن المساحة التزال واسعة للتطوير<br />

والتنمية.‏<br />

وال يشكو القطاع نقصاً‏ يف شركات التصنيع،‏ إذ<br />

تضم اإلمارات مجموعة من أفضل شركات صناعة<br />

اليخوت التي تصدر منتجاتها إىل كافة دول العالم،‏<br />

كما أن العديد من المصانع العالمية فتحت فروعاً‏<br />

لها يف الدولة الغنية بالكفاءات والخبرات.‏<br />

لكن ما يحتاج له القطاع هو تلبية المتطلبات<br />

التي يحتاجها صاحب اليخت ما بعد البيع،‏ وأهمها<br />

المراسي المالئمة للقوارب واليخوت وبأسعار<br />

مجدية،‏ خاصة اليخوت الفاخرة.‏ من ناحية ثانية<br />

فإن مرافق الصيانة المزودة برافعات ضخمة قادرة<br />

على التعامل مع اليخوت الكبيرة والفاخرة تحتاج<br />

أيضاً‏ إىل تطوير.‏<br />

ونحن نعقد األمل على مشروعات الواجهات<br />

البحرية الجديدة التي تطورها الشركات العقارية<br />

القيادية لتلبي النقص يف هذه الصناعة،‏ ونتمنى<br />

أن تشارك مصانع اليخوت وشركات القوارب<br />

الوطنية يف التخطيط والدراسة لتلك المشروعات<br />

من أجل ضمان امتالك صناعة يخوت عالمية<br />

متكاملة ولنكون أفضل وجهة بحرية.‏<br />

QE2 <strong>web</strong>site launch suggests<br />

famous ocean liner will soon<br />

reopen as a Dubai hotel<br />

The opening of the Queen Elizabeth<br />

2 as a luxury floating hotel and museum<br />

has apparently moved a step closer.<br />

“Coming soon,” runs the tagline on a<br />

new <strong>web</strong>site – qe2.com – that went live<br />

earlier this month. It ambitiously promises<br />

a “new take” on hospitality and a<br />

"royal experience" for Dubai.<br />

There’s no official launch date yet or<br />

definite mention of a hotel on the <strong>web</strong>site,<br />

but work on the famous ocean liner<br />

is at an advanced stage at Port Rashid<br />

where it has been docked since 2008.<br />

The QE2 celebrated the 50th anniversary<br />

of its launch last September<br />

and a story by The National then<br />

revealed the former Cunard Line flagship<br />

had undergone a major facelift.<br />

Signs stating “Queen Elizabeth 2,<br />

hotel main entrance” had been erected.<br />

An army of workers had cleaned the<br />

vessel, while the outdoor swimming pool<br />

was decked over so it could be potentially<br />

used to host events. The lifeboats<br />

were removed and placed around the<br />

complex as a type of advertising.<br />

Red Sea Ports: 41% increase in<br />

yachts traffic during 2017<br />

Malak Youssef, the spokesman of the Red Sea Ports Authority,<br />

said that the ports of the Authority witnessed the arrival and travel<br />

of 94,000 tourists in its ports during the year 2017, in the ports of<br />

Safaga, Nuweiba, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.<br />

On the other hand, the port of Hurghada witnessed the arrival and<br />

travel of 11 thousand tourists. The port of Nuweiba witnessed the<br />

arrival and travel of 27 thousand tourists. Youssef added that the<br />

ports witnessed the arrival and travel of 260 yachts with an increase<br />

of 41% over the year 2016 in Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada.<br />

UAE’s Al Zorah completes<br />

marina project in Ajman<br />

Al Zorah Development Company has opened Marina 1,<br />

a creek side project located in its eponymous mixed-use<br />

development in Ajman. Al Zorah Marina 1, which is being<br />

operated by ART Marine, also offers berthing and rescue<br />

services for boats and yachts that are between eight and<br />

40 metres. Imad Dana, chief executive officer of Al Zorah<br />

Development Company, commented: “With the launch of<br />

Marina 1, Al Zorah will further transform into a thriving<br />

community, where our Golf Villas residents and guests can<br />

spend a relaxing getaway at the 5-star The Oberoi Beach<br />

Resort, enjoy golfing at the 18-hole Nicklaus Design championship<br />

golf course managed by Troon Golf, kayak through<br />

serene natural mangroves, or moor at the marina’s berthing<br />

facilities and experience diverse recreational offerings.<br />

الممشى واالستمتاع بباقة واسعة من خيارات الطعام والترفيه<br />

يف ‏»مارينا 1«. ويتوفر أيضاً‏ اليخت الفاخر ‏»نورديك ستار«‏<br />

لالستئجار ألغراض متنوعة بما يف ذلك اجتماعات الشركات<br />

كفندق ومتحف عائم فاخر على االكتمال.‏<br />

‏"قريبا"،‏ فقد أعلن الموقع اإللكتروين للسفينة<br />

- qe2.com - أنه سينطلق قريباً،‏ وقد بدأ<br />

العمل به يف وقت سابق من هذا شهر فبراير<br />

2018. وتعد السفينة مشروعاً‏ طموحاً‏ يف مجال<br />

الضيافة و ‏"اللمسة الملكية"‏ لديب.‏<br />

لم يتم تحديد تاريخ معيّن لإلطالق الرسمي<br />

حتى اآلن أو اإلشارة إىل ذلك يف الوقع اإللكتروين<br />

للفندق،‏ ولكن العمل يجري على قدم وساق<br />

الفتتاح عابرة المحيط الشهيرة التي ترسو حاليا<br />

وصول وسفر 94 ألف سائح بموانئها خالل العام الماضي 2017.<br />

وشهد ميناء شرم الشيخ وصول وسفر 24 ألف سائح،‏ بينما شهد ميناء سفاجا وصول<br />

وسفر 32 ألف سائح،‏ يف حين شهد ميناء الغردقة وصول وسفر 11 ألف سائح،‏ أما ميناء<br />

نويبع فشهد وصول وسفر 27 ألف سائح.‏ وأشار ‏»يوسف«‏ إىل أن موائن الهيئة شهدت<br />

وصول وسفر 260 يختًا بنسبة زيادة %41 عن العام 2016 بموائن شرم الشيخ والغردقة،‏<br />

حيث شهد ميناء شرم الشيخ وصول وسفر 119 يختًا بنسبة زيادة 55% بينما شهد<br />

ميناء الغردقة وصول وسفر 141 يختًا بنسبة زيادة 32%.<br />

‏"سولت يب"‏ التي تمتلك مجموعة من<br />

تصميم نسخة عائمة من عربتها تقدم<br />

back with yet another gimmick. This time, it is in the form of the world’s first<br />

floating kitchen. Docked in the middle of a lagoon, this aqua pod called Salt<br />

Bay (not to be confused with #SaltBae) serves grill-fresh burgers to people<br />

passing by on their yacht, jet skis and others enjoying a day on the beach in<br />

Jumeirah on the stretch between Al Sufouh and Kite Beach.<br />

The menu includes burgers with thick beef, chicken and mozzarella patties<br />

served with curried mayo and bacon jalapeno sauce. Although it specialises<br />

in burgers, you can also order hotdogs, fries and mojitos.<br />

Sirena <strong>Yachts</strong> chose the 2018 Miami Yacht Show to unveil its new Sirena<br />

85, that marks the entering the superyacht market. The construction of<br />

this 26 meter long superyacht is already under construction at the Turkish<br />

shipyard. The new Sirena 85 is designed by two of the best international<br />

designers. Sirena 85 highlights the evolution of the unique designs that has<br />

always characterized Sirena <strong>Yachts</strong>.<br />

MCP releases more details of<br />

92.5 RPH yacht<br />

Brazilian yard MCP <strong>Yachts</strong> has released more details and<br />

the first interior renderings of its forthcoming MCP 92.5<br />

RPH yacht.<br />

This 27.74 metre in-house design is being built entirely<br />

from aluminium with a 7.15 metre beam and a maximum<br />

draught of 1.85 metres. As these new images show, the<br />

exterior styling of the 92.5 RPH has evolved in recent<br />

months, the most notable change being a bold new colour<br />

scheme, replacing the classic blue finish that was originally<br />

proposed. Elsewhere, the wheelhouse windows are now vertical<br />

and a cut-out section in the superstructure hints at a<br />

fold-out superyacht balcony.<br />

interviewed Mr. Mazen Salha, the<br />

Division Manager - Transportation<br />

Segment at 3M who informed<br />

<strong>Marasi</strong> <strong>Yachts</strong> team about the<br />

products and services that they<br />

provide to the market.<br />

Can we get an overview about<br />

3M’s marine department and the<br />

idea behind developing it?<br />

The idea behind developing<br />

our Marine Division started last<br />

year when we decided to build up<br />

a focused market center for the<br />

marine industry in the Gulf Region.<br />

We provide the industry with the<br />

right portfolio of premium repair and<br />

maintenance process and products<br />

as we have the most comprehensive<br />

solutions in the market to satisfy<br />

the customer needs for maintaining<br />

and servicing their boats. In addition<br />

to finding the right partners to distribute<br />

these products to the market<br />

through them.<br />

How do you perceive the marine<br />

and yachting industry in the UAE?<br />

We are very optimistic about the<br />

marine market in the UAE despite<br />

all the challenges that the industry<br />

is currently facing. We believe<br />

that this down turn will prepare us<br />

to a better future. We are working<br />

closely with our partners and we<br />

are challenging ourselves in order<br />

to find and provide better solutions<br />

and more efficient repair methods<br />

to ensure fulfilling our job in a more<br />

convenient way.<br />

What is the strategy that you are<br />

using in order to introduce your<br />

products effectively to the UAE<br />

market?<br />

Our strategy focuses on carefully<br />

choosing our channel partners<br />

for the marine industry in the<br />

Gulf Region. Recently, we signed a<br />

partnership agreement with Exalto<br />

Emirates to provide marine solutions<br />

in the Region as Exalto Emirates<br />

has the capacity to provide the<br />

marine market with wide range of<br />

solutions, equipment and products<br />

that serves the marine industry,<br />

since they have been in the market<br />

for more than 22 years. Moreover,<br />

we are planning to collaborate with<br />

Empire Marine to open the first<br />

marine customer care center that<br />

will combine both the products and<br />

the procedure where our customers<br />

can see how we do our maintenance<br />

and repairing procedures.<br />

Do you find it challenging to<br />

promote for your products in<br />

the market despite the premium<br />

price?<br />

One of the challenges that we<br />

are currently facing in this region<br />

is the awareness of our products.<br />

Our products and our solutions<br />

bring premium price-value and our<br />

aim is to deliver this value to our<br />

end users and our technicians at<br />

the same time. We will make sure<br />

that our team in coordination with<br />

Exalto Emirates team and Empire<br />

Marine team will deliver high quality<br />

services to our customer.<br />

Every customer is looking for a<br />

“Return on Investment” where the<br />

boat owner will enjoy his shiny<br />

gel paint for a long time, how do<br />

you ensure providing that to your<br />

customers?<br />

We are aware of that point, that’s<br />

why we have recently introduced<br />

the “Gelcoat Finish System”, this is<br />

a special system that will enhance<br />

the appearance of the “Gelcoat<br />

Paint” and so far this system has<br />

fulfilled the needs of many of our<br />

customers. The performance of this<br />

product is excellent and the application<br />

is easy. Moreover, our products<br />

keep the boat body and color in a<br />

perfect condition, which will in turn<br />

assure high selling prices for the<br />

boat. Furthermore, we are looking<br />

forward to introduce more effective<br />

products to the industry leaders in<br />

the UAE and the region as a whole.<br />

Do you develop any specific<br />

products for the GCC region,<br />

where heat and humidity rates are<br />

high most of the year?<br />

Definitely, we have the premium<br />

“Crystalline Film”, it is a unique<br />

product designed to block the radiation<br />

of the solar. The solar energy<br />

is divided into 3 spectrums the<br />

Ultra-violet light (UV), Visible light<br />

and the Infra-red light. The Infrared<br />

light is the biggest contributor<br />

to the heat inside a closed area and<br />

“Crystalline Film” is designed to<br />

completely block the Infra-red light<br />

up to 99% which will lead to 77%<br />

reduction in internal heat.<br />

هل تواجهون صعوبة يف ترويج منتجاتكم<br />

يف السوق نظراً‏ ألسعارها المرتفعة؟<br />

من أحد التحديات التي نواجهها حالياً‏<br />

هو عدم وجود وعي بمنتجاتنا يف المنطقة،‏<br />

حيث إن منتجاتنا نوعية وخدماتنا ذات جودة<br />

يبحث جميع العملاء عن ‏"العائد على<br />

المعروف أن طيف األشعة الشمسية<br />

Dubai International Boat Show<br />

2018 has moved to a new location<br />

the “Dubai Canal, Jumeirah”.<br />

What are your expectations from<br />

the new location?<br />

The Dubai Canal is the ideal<br />

location for this year’s Dubai International<br />

Boat Show (DIBS). The<br />

3.2-kilometre long extension runs<br />

from the Creek in Old Dubai, through<br />

Business Bay and into the Arabian<br />

Gulf. The Dubai Canal will be a fantastic<br />

base for Dubai International<br />

Boat Show until work is complete on<br />

its new home at the Dubai Harbour.<br />

We are very excited to be operating<br />

on an iconic landmark as it<br />

offers visitors the novelty of a new<br />

destination and scenic waterscape,<br />

and provides unprecedented access<br />

to the surrounding business and<br />

leisure hubs. Our new location is at<br />

the heart of the Dubai Canal, next to<br />

Dubai Ladies Club and just minutes<br />

from some of the coolest new developments<br />

in Dubai, including City<br />

Walk, Box Park and La Mer as well<br />

as in close proximity to the Bulgari<br />

Hotel and other world-class accommodations.<br />

The Dubai Canal itself represents<br />

Dubai’s ambitions to be the most<br />

important maritime destination in<br />

the Middle East, which is in line with<br />

Dubai International Boat Show’s<br />

standing as the leading event for<br />

superyachts, luxury leisure craft and<br />

every sector of the industry.<br />

Did the new location affect the<br />

number of exhibitors? And do<br />

you think that the new location<br />

will affect the traffic this year?<br />

The new location at the Dubai<br />

Canal in Jumeriah is the ideal setting<br />

for DIBS and we found that<br />

all our exhibitors are just as thrilled<br />

with the move as we are. In fact,<br />

our exhibitors are always adventurous,<br />

so there is a strong interest<br />

in showcasing their companies in a<br />

new location. The central location<br />

provides excellent connectivity for<br />

visitors coming from all parts of the<br />

city along with ample parking for<br />

visitors who choose to drive to the<br />

show. We are working closely with<br />

Dubai Police, RTA and other authorities<br />

to ensure a smooth arrival for<br />

all visitors.<br />

Can you give us an idea about how<br />

many exhibitors are participating<br />

this year and how many yachts<br />

will be showcased?<br />

Dubai International Boat Show<br />

year. We have over 100 new companies<br />

and over 30 global and regional<br />

launches. Notable yachts this year<br />

are the Monte Carlo 6, which won<br />

boat of the year in 2017, the 50<br />

metre Rocket by Heesen, the 72<br />

metre Serenity and a wide range of<br />

sailing yachts from Group Beneteau<br />

from France representing Lagoon,<br />

Jeaneau, Prestige and many other<br />

leading brands. The UAE-based Gulf<br />

Craft is always a hometown favorite<br />

at Dubai International Boat Show,<br />

and will be back again this year with<br />

a breath taking selection of their<br />

luxury boats.<br />

What are the new activities<br />

that will take place in Dubai<br />

International Boat Show 2018?<br />

This year will see a host of new<br />

activities for all of our visitors,<br />

including water sports stunt shows<br />

and taster sessions including kitesurfing,<br />

sailing, SUP, kayaking, free<br />

sailing experiences with Eden Yachting,<br />

the DXB paddle race by Seayou,<br />

the Woobly Boat Race, Music Festival<br />

by Redbull and more. We have<br />

also partnered with Nikki Beach that<br />

will be hosting a beautiful lounge<br />

experience from 3pm until 10pm to<br />

Celebrate Life with signature music<br />

and entertainment in a plush ambiance.<br />

What is the theme of Dubai<br />

International Boat Show this year<br />

and what is different than last<br />

year?<br />

With the new location at Dubai<br />

Canal there will certainly be a ‘new’<br />

feeling to this year’s show. This fits<br />

perfectly with this year’s theme<br />

of “Let’s go where you feel free”<br />

which epitomizes the freedom a<br />

marine lifestyle gives you. On social<br />

media we’ve been using the hashtag<br />

#letsgo, and we want to hear the<br />

stories that embody the freedom<br />

our visitors feel when they take to<br />

the sea. As with every year, we strive<br />

to keep the show fresh and different<br />

and this year we think everyone will<br />

be impressed.<br />

قناة ديب على مسافة 3.2 كم ابتداءاً‏ من<br />

الخور يف ديب القديمة،‏ مروراً‏ بالخليج التجاري<br />

ليصل إىل الخليج العريب.‏ وستكون قناة ديب<br />

قاعدة رائعة لمعرض ديب الدويل للقوارب<br />

and how many boats do you serve?<br />

We offer integrated services that give the yacht owner<br />

the ability to enjoy the UAE's and Dubai marine sights<br />

and capabilities. Our company facilitates the process of<br />

handling the boats. We make it easy going experience for<br />

boats and yachts owners because these equipments need<br />

great care and high costs. Now we successfully manages<br />

about 470 means till now.<br />

But how can you keep up with so many boats, this<br />

task should not be easy?<br />

Of course, it is not easy at all; especially when you know<br />

that we are following up many things related to boats,<br />

including insurance, registration, maintenance, crew, evacuation<br />

certificates and all the services required by us.<br />

We are trying in many ways to make it easier for yacht<br />

owners who are usually businessmen or professionals<br />

who do not have the time to follow up on these details.<br />

Here comes our role in taking over all the official and<br />

technical matters related to the yacht, and in order to<br />

How do to obtain the class certificate of the boats,<br />

especially to obtain UAE Yacht code?<br />

In terms of the UAE yacht code, which is needed to be<br />

issued for boats that are more than 85 feet long, or more<br />

than 2,000 tons, we are dealing with Rina and Lloyds.<br />

Under 23 meters, you do not need to issue the Emirates<br />

Yacht Code.<br />

Our certificates meets the international and European<br />

classification standards since 2015.<br />

How do you assess the evolution of the UAE's shipping<br />

sector compared to other countries globally?<br />

The UAE is one of the top five countries in the world in<br />

terms of maintenance, shipbuilding, dry docks and lifting<br />

services. The country has an ideal geographical location<br />

between East and West and has the best infrastructure<br />

in ports and yacht factories. It will have a global harbors<br />

infrastructure and luxury yacht berths soon.<br />

I think the UAE will be a great regional tourist destination<br />

for yacht owners, and this will drive a full economy<br />

related to the real estate development and services of<br />

oriented for the waterfront lifestyle.<br />

بموقع جغرايف مثايل بين الشرق والغرب،‏ كما أنها تتمتع بأفضل<br />

بنية تحتية يف مجال الموائن ومصانع اليخوت،‏ وقريباً‏ سيكون لديها<br />

بنية تحتية عالمية يف مجال المرائف ومراسي اليخوت الفاخرة.‏<br />

business reaches new heights<br />

following top year 2017<br />

From 27 February to 3 March, AMELS and DAMEN are presenting<br />

several exciting designs for large yachts over 70 metres at the Dubai<br />

International Boat Show 2018<br />

Delivering very demanding yachting<br />

projects on time and on budget<br />

to their clients’ full satisfaction,<br />

AMELS and DAMEN have a lot to be<br />

proud of in 2017. Moreover, AMELS<br />

and DAMEN’s yacht building yards<br />

have a strong order book of challenging<br />

projects ahead. This year<br />

got off to a strong start with the<br />

Dutch company announcing the sale<br />

of DAMEN Yacht Support vessels<br />

GAME CHANGER and NEW FRON-<br />

TIERS, as well as a new 55-metre<br />

AMELS 180 from the luxury yacht<br />

builder’s renowned Limited Editions<br />

range.<br />

"This new AMELS 180 yacht<br />

beautifully highlights the advantages<br />

of our Limited Editions approach<br />

to yacht building," commented<br />

AMELS Commercial Director Rose<br />

Damen. She added, "The AMELS<br />

180 has been the world’s bestselling<br />

55-metre yacht design since<br />

2007, and we’ve been able to do<br />

brand, 2017 was also a top year. The<br />

DAMEN Yacht Support team sold<br />

and delivered 69.15-metre GAME<br />

CHANGER. The sale of 55.30-metre<br />

NEW FRONTIERS – following the<br />

sale of FAST & FURIOUS last year<br />

(now AXIS) – cements DAMEN’s<br />

leadership of this rapidly developing<br />

support and adventure market<br />

– particularly for diving activities, as<br />

Ms Damen explains.<br />

Remarkable projects with<br />

sustainable progress<br />

DAMEN is now building its sixth<br />

55-metre Yacht Support vessel,<br />

which is available for delivery before<br />

the summer in 2018. Equipped with<br />

a host of new yachting enhancements<br />

and an even bigger watersports<br />

store, she will take her owner<br />

into new territory with a blend of<br />

stand-alone adventure mode and<br />

superyacht support mode.<br />

In January 2017 AMELS delivered<br />

the flagship of our Limited Editions<br />

fleet, our largest yacht to date,<br />

the 83.00-metre HERE COMES<br />

THE SUN with a Gross Tonnage of<br />

2,827. The hull of the first 57.70-<br />

metre AMELS 188 arrived shortly<br />

after and that yacht was sold to an<br />

existing client. In May AMELS delivered<br />

DRIFTWOOD, the milestone<br />

20th delivery of the hugely successful<br />

55-metre AMELS 180, almost<br />

exactly 10 years after the first Limited<br />

Editions model left the yard in<br />

2007.<br />

AMELS also delivered another<br />

three other yachts in 2017: the<br />

extensive 1-year, 61.50-metre<br />

CALYPSO refit project, the second<br />

74.00-metre AMELS 242 NEW<br />

SECRET and the 21st AMELS 180<br />

named LILI. During the summer,<br />

AMELS signed a 78-metre AMELS<br />

Full Custom yacht, the yard’s first<br />

non-Limited Editions contract since<br />

reintroducing custom building. With<br />

a Gross Tonnage of 2,850, this new<br />

yacht will be the largest AMELS<br />

yacht to date by volume when delivered<br />

in Vlissingen in 2021.<br />

The yachting refit business also<br />

developed positively in 2017 for<br />

both AMELS and DAMEN, including<br />

the most extensive AMELS Refit<br />

project in their history, the largest<br />

yacht refit project ever in the Netherlands.<br />

Rose Damen concluded, “The<br />

majority of our 2018 deliveries will<br />

be for repeat clients, which proves<br />

the trust they have in us and the<br />

products we build. Also, a number<br />

of our refit projects in 2018 are for<br />

AMELS yachts whose owners want<br />

to bring back their yachts back to the<br />

original builder for an upgrade with<br />

the original top quality and finish.”<br />

Why the UAE Should be<br />

a Super Yacht Destination?<br />

The UAE has diversified its economy<br />

with tourism as one of its core<br />

pillars, and is also recognised as a<br />

global business hub in the Middle<br />

East, South Asia, Oceania and East<br />

Africa. The UAE is an established<br />

exclusive and luxury world destination<br />

- a multicultural and safe hub,<br />

blessed with beautiful coasts and<br />

clear waters, excellent diving spots<br />

and breathless desert landscape. A<br />

number of international sport organizations<br />

and events have chosen to<br />

base themselves in UAE, either on a<br />

permanent or temporary basis.<br />

The Superyacht industry in the<br />

UAE seems to follow the same path<br />

already experienced by the cruise<br />

industry. A total of 87 cruise ships<br />

docked in Dubai in 2009, a number<br />

that nearly doubled to 157 during<br />

the 2016-2017 winter season. At last<br />

count, 18 companies were docking in<br />

the Middle East this winter, with five<br />

cruise lines doing a full season there;<br />

additional companies, including Car-<br />

nival Corp.’s P&O Cruises, are planning<br />

new itineraries to come online in<br />

2019.<br />

Despite the lack of dedicated<br />

facilities and services, Middle East<br />

and UAE are at present an interesting<br />

market for the superyacht<br />

industry. As per recent analyses and<br />

researches (Mare Forum Abu Dhabi,<br />

2017), “The Global Superyacht<br />

Market (30m & Above) is driven by<br />

212,000+ UHNWI’s globally, the<br />

number of which increased by 61%<br />

during 2005-2016. There are in the<br />

world a total of 5000+ superyachts<br />

in use, owned by less than 2.5%<br />

of UHNWI’s. The global population<br />

of UHNWIs is set to continue<br />

expanding during 2015-2025, but at<br />

a slower pace than the previous 10<br />

years.<br />

The total number of UHNWIs<br />

is forecast to rise 41% to 263,500<br />

by 2025 and in the Middle East the<br />

number of UHNWI’s is expected to<br />

grow 54% by 2025, third only to Asia<br />

and Russia/CIS”. (Ref. Joe Walton,<br />

Cayman Registry). According to the<br />

same study, “25 of the largest 101<br />

superyachts are owned by Nationals<br />

of the Gulf Region representing the<br />

highest per capita concentration in<br />

any region globally”. According to the<br />

Global Superyacht Order Book (April<br />

2016), a total of 59 superyachts<br />

were ordered in Middle East.<br />

Based on interviews with charter<br />

companies and maritime agencies<br />

and operators, the UAE is increasingly<br />

becoming a selected destination<br />

on the superyacht cruising circuit<br />

and offers an alternative wintering<br />

homeport to the popular established<br />

destinations, as Mediterranean and<br />

Caribbean.<br />

To discuss this topic, P&O MARI-<br />

NAS and FABMAR are excited to<br />

announce the first edition of the<br />

Dubai International Superyacht<br />

Summit. The event will take place<br />

from the 28th February – 1st March<br />

2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.<br />

The first edition's theme is ‘The<br />

Emirati Riviera: A New World Hub<br />

for Yachting’. On the first edition of<br />

Summit, experts from the superyacht<br />

industry from within the UAE<br />

and further afield will discuss the<br />

opportunities and challenges for the<br />

emergence of the Emirati Riviera as<br />

a yachting destination, and indeed<br />

a superyacht hub, and winter destination.<br />

The Dubai International<br />

Superyacht Summit answers to the<br />

increasing interest from the nautical<br />

community - yacht owners, captains<br />

and crews, marine authorities, marina<br />

operators, yacht builders, shipyards<br />

and maintenance operators, suppliers<br />

of services and goods - to meet<br />

and share knowledge, information,<br />

challenges and to support each other's<br />

interests.<br />

Emirati overview and opportunity<br />

In the last few years, the nautical<br />

and marine industry in the United<br />

Arab Emirates has experienced significant<br />

growth, combined with the<br />

fact that many marina projects have<br />

been developed and are presently<br />

under construction. Furthermore,<br />

few important projects in the region<br />

are now including more and more<br />

berths for superyachts, which category<br />

is increasing in the Middle East.<br />

As a consequence, there is an<br />

increasing interest from the nautical<br />

community - boats and yacht<br />

owners, captains and crews, marine<br />

authorities, marina operators, boat<br />

and yacht builders, shipyards and<br />

maintenance operators, suppliers of<br />

services and goods - to meet and<br />

share knowledge, information, problems<br />

and support each other’s business.<br />

Although non-associated nautical<br />

lobbies already exist in the Country<br />

and, together with the marine<br />

authorities and developers, have<br />

contributed to the development of<br />

the UAE maritime industry in the<br />

last 15 years, a formal unification of<br />

the nautical community under the<br />

same organization and/or association<br />

(EAMI - the Emirati Association<br />

of Marine Industry) would make the<br />

UAE nautical industry stronger, more<br />

compact and would be of great benefit<br />

for the reputation of the Country<br />

in the wider community. Furthermore,<br />

partnerships and collaborations with<br />

the most reputable international<br />

marine associations would support<br />

the existent know-how and would<br />

help in the development of the UAE<br />

yachting industry and community, at<br />

international level.<br />

ASK THE EXPERT<br />

A cautionary tale: How a small<br />

incident can land you court for years?<br />

In this article, we highlight issues<br />

that a yacht owner may face in case<br />

of a sailing incident in the UAE. We<br />

will look at a real life example of a<br />

yacht collision and the lessons that<br />

can be learnt from it.<br />

A yacht, let us call it Whisperer (all<br />

the names have been changed for the<br />

purposes of this article) left a harbour<br />

on a bright and sunny morning<br />

with guests aboard leisurely enjoying<br />

their drinks and snacks. The yacht<br />

was sailing along one of the islands<br />

off Jumeirah Beach Park. Heading<br />

for the lee of the island, it anchored<br />

what the captain believed to be 50<br />

metres away from the 100ft ketch<br />

yacht, let us call it Summer Shine.<br />

The sunny morning turned into a<br />

windy afternoon with winds of about<br />

30 knots around 3:30pm. At about<br />

4pm, Summer Shine started to drag<br />

its anchor and coming quickly and<br />

seemingly out of control on a collision<br />

course with Whisperer. The yacht’s<br />

captain let out more of the anchor<br />

to move away from the oncoming<br />

yacht, but he could not lift the anchor<br />

because by that time Summer Shine<br />

was on top of the anchor chain of<br />

Whisperer. It’s captain tried to avoid<br />

the collision but Summer Shine hit<br />

the yacht on the bow first, bending<br />

the anchor bracket. As Whisperer<br />

lurched to port, Summer Shine<br />

struck it again but this time with a<br />

lot more force on the starboard side<br />

mid/stern quarter.<br />

The coastguard was called to<br />

investigate the incident and it was<br />

also reported to the marine police.<br />

The marine police arrived to the harbour<br />

to take the captain’s statement<br />

and to prepare a police report.<br />

On the first look, the yacht was<br />

not responsible for the collision and<br />

potentially had a claim against Summer<br />

Shine. However, it turned out<br />

that Whisperer’s captain did not<br />

have a marine driving license on him.<br />

A copy stored on file showed that<br />

the license was valid for another two<br />

months. However, upon calling for<br />

the original license, it transpired that<br />

it was canceled and was not immediately<br />

renewed because the captain<br />

was in the process of renewing his<br />

employment visa. By sailing without<br />

a valid license, the captain broke the<br />

law.<br />

The course of events that followed<br />

was quite unpleasant for Whisperer.<br />

The police opened a criminal case<br />

against the yacht’s captain and the<br />

owner of Summer Shine filed a compensation<br />

claim against Whisperer<br />

in civil courts. The civil courts suspended<br />

the case until the outcome<br />

of the criminal investigation.<br />

An important issue in this case<br />

was the distance that Whisperer<br />

observed when anchoring next to<br />

Summer Shine. The captain’s statement<br />

said that Whisperer was<br />

anchored 50 meters away from<br />

Summer Shine, but the police statement<br />

in Arabic (countersigned by<br />

the captain) stated 15 meters only.<br />

Notably, the captain was not an Arabic<br />

speaker and he did not have the<br />

police statement translated to him<br />

when he signed it. Other witnesses<br />

provided inconsistent accounts.<br />

Two years after the event, the court<br />

appointed expert concluded that<br />

Whisperer was anchored 15 meters<br />

behind Summer Shine.<br />

After several years of investigations,<br />

the criminal charges against<br />

the yacht’s captain were dropped but<br />

it had great personal impact on the<br />

captain who was unable to leave the<br />

country pending criminal investigation.<br />

Whisperer’s owner also suffered<br />

significant losses including costs of<br />

the litigation. The civil compensation<br />

case was ongoing for some time<br />

after completion of the criminal case.<br />

As a result of the civil case the liability<br />

was divided equally between the<br />

two parties.<br />

There are a few useful lessons in<br />

this cautionary tale. Firstly, always<br />

ensure that all your paperwork and<br />

permits are up-to-date because this<br />

can unexpectedly cause problems in<br />

case of an incident for which you may<br />

not even be responsible. Secondly, if<br />

you are asked to sign a statement or<br />

any document in a language that you<br />

do not understand, request an official<br />

translation or qualify your signature<br />

accordingly. Finally, be aware<br />

that even a relatively small claim<br />

for damages can have a tremendous<br />

negative impact on the person<br />

involved and on his/her ability to<br />

leave the country, as well as the cost<br />

consequences.<br />

Marina Yacht Club in collaboration with Nakheel organized one of the largest rallies, held by Dubai Marina<br />

Yacht Club, where more than 90 yachts and boats participated. <strong>Marasi</strong> <strong>Yachts</strong> team was privileged to attend<br />

this spectacular event and to experience the largest gathering of happiness on board. The rally’s participation<br />

wasn’t only limited to Dubai Marina Yacht Club members which encouraged a big number of participants to join<br />

and marking a new record.<br />

Long-term objectives<br />

the amazing activities organized during<br />

the rallies. She added, “The UAE<br />

is one of the few destinations where<br />

people can enjoy boating across the<br />

year. Boating has become like a special<br />

therapy where I restore my inner<br />

peace and positive energy.”<br />

Another participant of the rally<br />

is Mr. Svein Bjelland from Norway,<br />

the owner of the boat called “Second<br />

Wife” that was named after his<br />

Egyptian friend got married to a second<br />

wife. He explained that boating<br />

activities organized by Dubai Marina<br />

Yacht Club made his staying in the<br />

UAE more pleasurable as he couldn’t<br />

find such distinctive lifestyle anywhere<br />

else.<br />

The iconic Dubai Marina Yacht<br />

Club has recently announced its new<br />

location in Address Dubai Marina.<br />

The new location is exceptional with<br />

its open terrace and it has an easy<br />

access to marina berths. For this<br />

Halal tourism<br />

Mr. Shahid mentioned that Maldives<br />

now offers investment products<br />

and opportunities for UAE and<br />

GCC investors that is end to end<br />

halal compliant, which makes it so<br />

convenience for businessmen from<br />

the region to utilize the capabilities<br />

of tourism industry. Moreover, Maldives<br />

is working to be a main destination<br />

for Arabic families who are<br />

looking for pleasurable holidays that<br />

suites their traditions and values.<br />

From the other side Maldives is<br />

well known to be as a honeymooner<br />

heaven, however, it is working now<br />

on launching awareness campaigns<br />

to promote more its halal tourism<br />

side and showing the packages convenient<br />

for Arabic families. Maldives<br />

authorities is collaborating with<br />

many strategic partners in the UAE<br />

to build this new image across the<br />

tourism industry as clarified by Mr.<br />

Shahid.<br />

Investors protection<br />

Regarding the regulations and<br />

measures that Maldives government<br />

is offering for investors to be<br />

protected and feel that they will go<br />

for a secured business partnership,<br />

Mr. Shahid emphasized that all investors<br />

are completely protected<br />

by the laws and regulations of the<br />

country. The investors can enjoy<br />

100% free ownership for the projects.<br />

The taxation rate and system<br />

is friendly for foreign investors. As<br />

a proof for that most of the existing<br />

investors are expanding their<br />

projects because they are achieving<br />

good returns on the investments<br />

they made earlier.<br />
