Takashi Murakami 다카시 무라카미
(b.1962)
Takashi Murakami는 1962년 일본 도쿄에서 태어났다. 현
재는 도쿄와 뉴욕시에서 살면서 작품 활동을 하고 있다.
Tokyo University of the Arts에서 공부했고, 1986년에 순
수미술 학사 학위, 1988년에 석사 학위, 그리고 1993년에
박사 학위를 받았다. 1996년에 도쿄에 ‘히로뽕’ 공장을 세웠
고, 이 공장은 후에 미술 제작 및 관리 회사인 Kaikai Kiki( 怪
怪 奇 奇 )가 되었다. 2분법적 문화계(예술과 상업)에서 모든
비판을 받아야 하는 ‘피뢰침’을 자처하는 Murakami는 ‘예술
가란 세상의 경계를 인식하고 이것을 그림으로 그려야 하는
사람’이라고 생각한다. 정교한 고전 화법( 畵 法 ) 기술을 팝,
애니메이션, 오타쿠(otaku)적 상상력을 하나로 모아 자신만
의 ‘슈퍼플랫(Superflat)’ 스타일로 표현하는 Murakami는
미적 문제와 문화적 영감이 끊임없이 확장되는 영역 내에서
자유롭게 움직인다. 그의 작품에 고스란히 담겨 있는 ‘반( 反 )
이상향’이라는 주제와 병행하여, 그는 초월( 超 越 )과 계몽( 啓
蒙 )을 전통적인 방식으로 다시 되살려내고 있다. 소위 말하
는 일본의 ‘괴짜들’(서구 낭만주의 전통에 대응하는 집단으
로 기존 질서를 거부하는 초기 근대기의 예술가들)이 좋아
하는 종교적이면서 세속적인 주제를 다룬다. Murakami는
오롯이 자신만의 방식으로 이들의 대담하면서도 생동감 있
는 유산( 遺 産 )을 보여주려고 한다. Murakami의 작품은 미

Takashi Murakami was born in 1962 in Tokyo, Japan.
He currently lives and works in Tokyo and New York
City. He studied at Tokyo University of the Arts, where
he received his B.F.A. in 1986, M.F.A. in 1988, and
Ph.D in 1993. He founded the Hiropon factory in
Tokyo in 1996, which later evolved into Kaikai Kiki,
an art production and art management corporation.
A lightning rod of cultural dichotomies, Murakami
believes the artist to be one who perceives and
represents the borders between worlds. Combining
refined classical painting techniques with a
supercharged mix of Pop, animé, and otaku imagery in
his distinctive ‘Superflat’ style. Murakami moves freely
within an ever-expanding field of aesthetic issues
and cultural inspirations. Parallel to the dystopian
themes, which pervade his work, he recollects and
revitalises traditional narratives of transcendence and
enlightenment. Mining religious and secular subjects
favoured by the so-called Japanese ‘eccentrics’
(non-conformist artists of the Early Modern era widely
regarded as counterparts of the Western Romantic
tradition). Murakami situates himself within their
legacy of bold and lively individualism in a manner
that is entirely his own and of his time. Murakami’s
work has been featured in many solo and group
exhibitions worldwide, including the Museum of Fine
Arts in Boston, USA, the Museum of Contemporary
Art in Tokyo, Japan, Fondation Cartier pour l'art
contemporain in Paris, France, the Serpentine Gallery
in London, England, the Museum of Contemporary Art
in Los Angeles, USA, the Brooklyn Museum in New
York, USA, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt,
