Yoshitomo Nara 요시토모 나라

Yoshitomo Nara는 1959년에 일본 ‘히로사키’에서 태
어났다. 현재는 도쿄에서 생활하면서 작품 활동을 하
고 있다. Nara는 Aichi Prefectural University of
Fine Arts and Music, 그리고 독일 뒤셀도르프의
Kunstakademie를 졸업했다. 2차 세계대전 후의 생활
은 Nara의 미술에 많은 영향을 주었다. 그는 Takashi
Murakami가 시작한 일본 미술계의 ‘포스트모던 슈퍼
플랫’ 운동에 동참했다. Murakami와 마찬가지로 Nara
는 일본 만화를 활용하고 있다. Roy Lichtenstein과
같은 미국 팝 아티스트를 연상시키는데, 만화책에 나
오는 그림과 기술을 사용하고 있다. Nara의 작품에 자
주 등장하는 천박할 정도로 유아적인 모습은 어른이 되
기 싫어하는 마음을 보여주는 것으로 해석되기도 한다.
1984년 이후, Nara는 세계 곳곳에서 40여 차례의 개
인전을 열었다
Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in Hirosaki, Japan.
He currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. Nara
graduated from the Aichi Prefectural University of
Fine Arts and Music and from the Kunstakademie
in Düsseldorf, Germany. Nara’s upbringing in post-
World War II Japan profoundly affected his art. He
belongs to the postmodern Superflat movement
of Japanese art founded by Takashi Murakami.
Like Murakami, the artist uses Japanese manga
and cartoons reminiscent of American Pop artists
such as Roy Lichtenstein and his use of comic
book drawings and techniques. The superficially
childish preoccupations depicted in Nara’s oeuvre
are sometimes interpreted as a fear of adulthood.
Since 1984, Nara has participated in nearly 40 solo
exhibitions around the world.
