Joe Black은 수천 개의 작은 물건들을 이용하여 형상화한 대
중적이거나 상징적인 이미지에 기반하는 대형 작품으로 알
려진 영국 출신의 현대 미술가이다. 그의 작품 대부분은 이
미지와 매체 사이의 아이러니한 관계를 탐구하여 복잡하면
서도 거대한 결과물을 만들어내고 있다. 모든 작품들이 수 개
월 동안 꼼꼼하게 조립하는 과정을 거치고 있다. 이러한 노력
을 통해, Black은 전체적으로 보이는 이미지와 작은 복합 부
품들이 모여서 보여주는 이미지 모두를 연출함으로써 자각
행위가 무엇인지 찾아내고 있다. 그는 웅장함과 복잡함을 관
람객이 동시에 경험해야 한다는 자신의 목적을 달성하고 있
다. Black이 해석하는 방식에 따라, 작품에서 전하고자 하는
주제가 완전히 새롭게 바뀐다. 디지털 매체를 이용하여 결과
물을 바로 만들어내는 시대에, Black은 대신 2진법적 형태의
실물동화( 實 物 動 畵 )를 만듦으로써, 다시 말하면 순전히 사람
의 손으로만 조립하여 만들고 보여주기 위해 엄청난 시간을
투자함으로써 우리의 자각을 의도적으로 무너뜨렸다. 움직
이지 않는 무생물을 절묘하게 이용하여 피사체의 특징을 표
현하면서 평범한 것을 특별한 것으로 탈바꿈시킨다.
Joe Black is a British contemporary artist known
for his large-scale artworks based on popular or
iconic imagery constructed from thousands of tiny
commonplace objects. His oeuvre often explores the
ironic relationship between the image and the chosen
medium resulting in intricate and monumental works.
Each piece is an undertaking requiring months of
meticulous assembly. Through his endeavour, Black
explores the act of perception by making images
that are seen both as a whole and as a collection of
small composite parts. He achieves his objective
for the viewer to experience the grand and the intricate
simultaneously. Through Black’s interpretation, the subject
of the work is given a totally new context. In the age
of immediacy resultant through the increased use of
digital media, Black has intentionally subverted our
perceptions by creating an alternative, binary form of
pixilation - one that takes considerable time to produce
and conceive, assembled entirely by the human hand.
Inanimate objects are skilfully used to give expression
to the subject’s personality, creating a metamorphosis
of the ordinary into something extraordinary.
