Annual Gourmet Food & Wine Festival
will help pave the way for non-profit
Torrance Memorial Medical Center’s
addition, at the event Honda also
announced the donation of a 2015 Honda
TrojanFest
USC Trojans from throughout the South Bay and Long
Beach gathered at the South Coast Botanic Garden in
August for the second annual TrojanFest. It was a familyfriendly
event for Trojans of all ages. Kids enjoyed activities
and games in the Kid Zone, adults networked and visited
the full bar with fellow alums and other Trojan fans,
and all ate heartily from the variety of food trucks. The
Trojan Marching Band, led by Band Director Art Bartner,
performed along with the USC Song Girls, and USC’s mascot,
Traveler, posed for photos with the attendees. The
admission fee included entrance into the Botanic Garden
and a tram tour. The event was a collaboration of the USC
Alumni Association, Trojan League of South Bay, Trojan
Club of the Coastal Cities, Marshall Partners, and the USC
Young Alumni Council.
Peninsula cars triumph at 23rd
Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance
Residents sweep American Classics 1935-1948 division
Story and photos by Randy Angel
Anew venue and the 100th anniversary of Cadillac highlighted
Sunday’s Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance. Car owners from
the Palos Verdes Peninsula, including four multi-award winners
from the 23rd annual event, held for the first time at Los Verdes
Golf Course.
Ed and Judy Thompson, of Palos Verdes Estates, were three-time
winners. They received second-place finishes with their 1934 Packard
1101 719 Coupe Roadster (American Classics Open 1925-34) and their
1939 Packard 1703 Convertible Sedan (American Classics Open 1935-
48). Their 1948 Packard Convertible Victoria placed third (Packard
through 1956).
The Thompson’s runner up-finish in the American Classics Open
1935-48 division was part of a sweep by Peninsula residents. Tom and
Shannon Hartman won first place with their 1936 Lincoln K V12
Brunn Victoria and fellow Rancho Palos Verdes resident Glenn S.
Streeter earned third place with a 1942 Packard 2023 Convertible
Victoria.
The Hartman’s also took home a second-place award in the
Preservation Class – Pre War category with a 1934 Packard 1103 4-
Door Sedan.
Palos Verdes Estates resident Lee Minshull captured two secondplace
awards with his 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet (Ferrari 1950-
1962) and his 1967 Jaguar Series I E-Type Roadster (Jaguar E-Type).
Minshull acquired his Jaguar seven years ago from Classic
Showcase in Oceanside.
“I walked into the shop and said I was interested in restoring a car,”
Minshull said. “They said there was about a year’s waiting list and
then about a year and a half from then. He pointed out a car sitting
off to the side that had only 33,000 original miles and said if you make
a deal on this car right now we’ll restore it right here. I agreed and
had it restored to its original state. It was a primrose color which is
kind of an off yellow, so we repainted it a dark midnight blue and put
a beige interior in. We put six layers of paint on it -– the norm is three
to four -- so it will almost permanently have the deep, rich color. It’s
one of my favorite cars in my 18-car collection and I love driving it.”
Jay and Bonnie McDonald, of Palos Verdes Estates, won the top two
awards in the Mercedes 300SL division. Their 1960 Mercedes Benz
300SL Roadster captured first place and their 1956 Mercedes Benz
300SL Gullwing finished as runner-up.
Palos Verdes Estates resident Jim Huizdos won third place in the
Antiques (1918-24) division with his 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe
Roadster.
Rancho Palos Verdes resident Dana Graham is a perennial exhibitor
at the PV Concours d’Elegance and was excited to showcase his 1932
Chrysler Imperial CH Convertible Sedan. He acquired the car about
annual Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance car show. An owner of 18 classic automobiles,
Minshull also won second place in the Ferrari (1950-62) Class with his
1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet.
Rancho Palos Verdes residents Tom and Shannon Hartman won first place in the
American Classics Open 1935-48 Division with their 1936 Lincoln K V12 Brunn
Victoria. The Hartman’s also took home a second-place award in the Preservation
Class – Pre War category with a 1934 Packard 1103 4-Door Sedan.
Owned by Kaia Echternkamp, of Glendora, this 1955 Austin J40 was originally a
pedal car later transformed into a motorized mini-car. The custom-built Teardrop
Trailer has working lights, a hot dog grill, refrigerator and running water.
four years ago, becoming only the fourth
owner of the vehicle.
“It was thought that there were only four of
these cars in existence so I was skeptical
when I heard that this 85-year old man in
Kennewick, Washington had one,” Graham
said. “They only made this model one year.
This car was originally owned by MGM
Studios, from new through the war years.
That’s my theory on why it survived because
a lot of them were melted down.”
The car was restored in 1974 but wasn’t
driven regularly so Graham needed to take
everything apart. It has the original French
Blue color.
“I have pictures of the car being built but,
of course, they are in black and white,”
Graham said. “It drives really nicely. You can
steer it with one finger, which is rare for this
era. Most of them you have to be in a weight
program to handle.”
One of the most popular vehicles on display
was the smallest. Owned by Kaia
Echternkamp, of Glendora, her 1955 Austin
J40 included a custom-built Teardrop Trailer.
In 1946, the Austin Motor Company began
manufacturing small J40 pedal cars as a way
to provide work for unemployed Welsh coal
miners. By 1950, the cars were in full production
with one of the first presented to
Queen Elizabeth to give to Prince Charles,
who was two years old at the time.
Originally a pedal car, Kaia’s pride and joy
later became one of two J40s (along with two
motorcycles) as part of a carousel ride operated
by a small family-owned amusement
park in Colorado.
The carousel was sold around 2010 with
the little vehicles sold separately. Kaia’s
grandparents purchased one for her.
Grandpa Dennis DeNoi and father Larry
Lange restored and transformed the little J40
into a state-of-the-art, fully-operational,
motorized mini-car. The labor of love was not
cheap with parts and accessories costing
more than $15,000.
The family was avid campers so a custom
Teardrop Trailer was built to accompany the
car. It has working lights, a hot dog grill,
refrigerator and running water.
To see the story behind the car and trailer,
log onto YouTube videos “Kaia’s Austin J40
Parts 1 & 2” and “Kaia’s Teardrop Trailer.”
The Best of Show Award went to a 1931
Chrysler Imperial CG Le Baron Dual Cowl
Phaeton owned by Aaron and Valerie Weiss
of San Marino. PEN
Helaine and Steve Lopes have brought teamwork to community volunteering.
They are the PV Chamber’s 2015 Citizens of the Year.
by Alexandra Katchadourian
Helaine and Steve Lopes were on a trip to New York City
with the University of Southern California’s football
team when they made a decision. Helaine, then a sports
trainer for the University, and Steve, an administrator for USC’s
athletic department, had been close friends for years, but finally
recognized a deeper fondness for each other.
“Helaine didn’t work for me directly, but we worked in the
same building and we were a really close-knit group of people,”
said Steve Lopes. “We would all hang out and over time we just
sort of developed our relationship. We were really good friends
first, but at one point we just looked at each other and thought,
‘You know, maybe we should explore this, and take our relationship
more serious.’”
The Lopeses have not only devoted their lives to each other,
but have continued to cultivate a fruitful 30-year-plus relationship
with USC.
Starting in 1985 as an intern for the University’s first ever
Director of Athletic Marketing, Steve has become one of the
most integral components of USC’s ever-growing athletic
department, now sitting as its chief operating officer and chief
financial officer. Helaine spent 21 years as a USC athletic
trainer during which time she implemented rehabilitation
programs for athletes, assisted coaches in conditioning,
weight training and nutrition, and interfaced with team doctors
for treatments. She now teaches a class in Exercise
Physiology.
The couple is also involved in a number of Trojan-driven
associations and directorial boards.
“Every university has great qualities and has wonderful
stories, I just think our experiences with USC have been ones
that make working there fun and enjoyable,” says Steve. “People
talk about the Trojan family all the time, and people that are not
a part of it might not understand, but I know it’s true. In
Southern California there is no stronger relationship between
university and alumni.”
Although the Lopeses’ achievements at USC are a defining
aspect of their lives, it’s the couple’s commitment to serving the
close-knit Palos Verdes community that led the Chamber of
Commerce to honor Helaine and Steve as this year’s Palos
Verdes’ Citizens of the Year.
“What really stood out to the Chamber’s committee and board
is the fact that both Helaine and Steve have been involved in so
many different organizations, across a number of fields, for a
number of years,” says Chamber director Eileen Hupp. “The
Lopeses have given time, talent, and energy to everything from
Little League and local high school athletic programs, to National
Charity League, the Education Foundation, and the Boys and
Girls of LA Harbor.”
The Lopeses were honored with a banquet October 16.
Despite the breadth and length of the Lopeses’ involvement and
service, they’d never expected their volunteer work to earn them
such an award. For the Lopeses, community support and service
are an inherent core value of their family. Their service over the
years has been an effort that they, along with their son Matt and
daughter Jen, have always wanted to do to strengthen their family
and give back to the community.
“Most of the things we’ve become involved with are because
of our kids,” says Steve. “You do things that sort of impact close
to home. We were involved in our kids’ lives growing up here,
extracurricular or otherwise, and were naturally inclined to volunteer
and participate in these organizations. The important
thing is you hope to teach your kids to be giving, caring, and volunteer
themselves.”
The Lopeses’ steadfast service has left an impression on their
children. Both are currently attending USC. Matt has been
involved with a variety of youth groups and Jen working for the
Special Olympics, Better LA, and The Caruso Center.
“You do things with the hope that it teaches others and your
kids to help,” says Helaine. “Our family is very much a team,
and both Steve and I have tried to lead our team by example, and
showing our kids that it’s all about community and helping.”
It’s the Lopeses’ notions of teamwork, steeped in both Helaine
and Steve’s lasting involvement in athletics and athletic health,
that has permeated their overall dedication to service. Whether
it’s mentoring student athletes at USC, pioneering Torrance
Memorial Medical Center’s “Healthy Ever After Program,”
which targets at-risk youth for diabetes, or further propelling
education initiatives through the Boys and Girls Club and the
Education Foundation, the two of them have centered their volunteer
work around healthy living, education, and youth.
“They’ve not only given a lot to this community, but they have
focused in on two or three key areas that they, as a family, have
identified as things that are really important to them,” says
Hupp.
For the Lopeses, the principles and values that come with
being part of a team are what they hope to perpetuate through
their dedicated volunteering and work.
“The model for athletics works all of over the place, even when
you’re not in athletics,” says Helaine. “Our daughter was
involved with the Norris Theatre, which provided her an opportunity
to be in a team-like situation, but in a non-athletic environment.”
“I think anyone who competes in sports learns so many good
things from being part of a team,” says Steve. “Teamwork and
counting on your teammates, taking responsibility, leadership,
time management. Those are things you don’t get when not
exposed to team-oriented environments.” PEN
Grill master
A welder and his wife develop a
high-end line of
weather resistant grills for
beachside homes
by Esther Kang
One of the first investments George and Mary Sandoval made when
they moved into their new oceanside home in Palos Verdes 20
years ago was a top-of-the-line barbecue grill. The couple loved to
cook outdoors.
But a few years later, they were disappointed to find that the burner
was giving out and the metallic surfaces were corroding. It clearly wasn’t
built to last in the salty, coastal air.
“And I said to myself, I’m never buying another one,” George, 71,
recalls. “So I started designing one.”
That’s how American Cooking Equipment was born some 15 years ago.
To date, the company has sold about 1,500 high-end grills to grill enthusiasts,
restaurateurs and hotel kitchens across the country. Manufactured
in Sandoval’s facility in Gardena, they’re sold in their only store in
Torrance. Next year, he plans to open two more stores in West L.A. and
Irvine.
George’s entrepreneurial spirit dates back to his childhood, first in
Wisconsin then Lawndale. As the fourth of seven kids, he always opted
to make his own toys, slingshots and bow and arrows. When he turned
12, his next-door neighbor taught him to weld in his garage. At
Leuzinger High School, he learned as much as he could about welding.
By night, he was at El Camino College, taking higher-level courses
in welding.
“Most of my life has been in metal shops,” he says. “It just came
naturally to me.”
After high school, George got a job in a Gardena-based manufacturing
company for beauty and barber furniture. Starting at a minimum
wage of $1.50 an hour, he was promoted to production manager
within two years. At age 20, he was overseeing a production team
of 40 workers. He stayed there for nine more years until he founded
his own company in 1974, at 29 years old, in a 1,500 sq. ft. warehouse
space in Gardena.
Today, Artistic Welding Inc. (Precision Sheet Metal) occupies a
100,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Gardena. In its 41 years of
operation, the company has taken on manufacturing for the likes of
Hughes, Raytheon, IBM and Teledyne. But due to the industrial sector’s
decline in the state since the ‘80s, a number of Artistic Welding’s
clients have moved to more business-friendly states, such as Texas,
George explains. One product that has stayed consistently in demand
since 1977 is airport body scan machines and x-rays.
“The customers are relying on you to do what you say, say what
you do, on time and good quality,” says Mary, who oversees Artistic
Welding. “Over these years, [George] has had that philosophy and
way of thinking and working the whole time, and that’s how the
business has built up.”
Mary grew up in Walnut and attended San Diego State University
to become a teacher. When she became pregnant with her son Travis,
she decided to leave school and find a job. She saw a listing seeking
an office person at Artistic Welding's facility and told herself it would
be a temporary arrangement.
“My original thoughts were, I’ll work for a year here, get bored and
go on and do something else,” Mary recalls. “But it turns out, there’s
never a dull moment in manufacturing. I got hooked and interested
in everything we were doing. There’s a lot that has to come together
for these parts to come out right. He started teaching me about the
business and I started learning and taking charge."
As administrator, she coordinated jobs between Artistic Welding’s
team of 50 employees, to whom she credits the company’s success.
One current worker started at the company when he was 18 — that
was back in 1980.
“We have the best employees,” she says. “We work together with
these men who have been with us, many of them well over 20 years.
Without them we’d be nowhere.”
Since tying the knot in 1996, Mary and George have formed a multifaceted
partnership that capitalizes on each other’s area of strength.
With Mary overseeing the day-in and day-out of the manufacturing
operation at Artistic Welding, he is able to pursue designing his own
products.
For American Cooking Equipment, George has designed and developed
an entire line of high-end grills and pizza ovens specifically for
coastal areas. The appliances are manufactured using 316L surgical
stainless steel, a low carbon steel that’s extremely resistant to rust
and corrosion. He believes they are the only manufacturer on the
market extensively using this type of steel.
The couple’s own backyard carries the entire outdoor kitchen set,
complete with a 10-burner grill, pizza oven and wok. They grill three
to five times a week — the other day, they grilled a 50-pound pig.
They also throw their harvest of carrots, potatoes, broccoli and tomatoes
on the grill from their own green house, an 11-feet by 20-feet
structure that George built.
There’s a new smoker in the works — one of three or four new
products that George is adding to the line this upcoming year.
“I’m always designing things,” George says. “I’m never idle.” PEN
by Esther Kang
Last October, Palos Verdes native James Kao
found himself miles deep in the Chilean
Patagonia mountains, taking quiet strides
alongside a local wildlife guide named Diego.
They were just a few hours into their five-day
photography expedition tracking wild pumas
when their tracker Roberto radioed in with great
news: he spotted two sitting on some rocks by
the coast.
Kao, his camera and long zoom lens around his
neck, followed Diego out to the spot. From about
200 meters away, he snapped close-up shots of a
mother puma sitting with her cub, a surreal,
quiet moment that lasted just a few minutes
before the two scurried away.
During the remainder of the expedition, the
trio would find three more pumas by watching
and listening closely to traveling herds of guanacos,
relative of the llama and common prey for
pumas. When guancos sense a puma approaching,
they stand up on their legs and sound a
shrill whistle. Due to the puma’s skittish nature
tracking one can be challenging. Two of the five
days in the Patagonia mountains, the crew didn’t
spot a single one.
Kao does not consider himself a wildlife photographer.
He only recently started calling himself
a photographer. Since leaving his longtime
career as an associate planner at the City of
Signal Hill in 2012, he’s allowed his wanderlust
to take the wheel, with he and his camera enthusiastically
along for the ride.
Since then, he sold his house in Long Beach
and has explored a dozen countries including
Myanmar, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Sri
Lanka and Antarctica. His wide-ranging photography,
from action shots to portraits, is increasingly
garnering attention from industry
tastemakers such as B&H Photo and Photo
selected one of Kao’s works to show in
the Los Angeles Center of
Photography’s first annual “Creative
Kao's family moved to Palos Verdes
from Garden Grove when he was 4. His
father, a doctor, ran a practice in the
South Bay. His grandmother, who lived
in Torrance, cultivated his love for the
outdoors by teaching him and his
younger brother about gardening and
harvesting fruits and vegetables. Kao
painting, but he chose to keep himself grounded in a “practical”
mindset for his career.
“I wanted to do something creative, but at the same time I thought
being a starving artist would be difficult,” he says.
After participating in a summer architecture program at Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo during his sophomore year at Palos Verdes High
School, Kao believed he’d found a solid middle ground where he
could apply his artistic inclinations to a sustainable career. In 1992,
he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in landscape
architecture.
Despite an Ivy League degree under his belt, he quickly became
disillusioned working for various planning and engineering firms in
Orange County. At the bottom of the totem pole, he was never given
the reins to create and design. Rather, monotonous technical work
ruled his days in the office.
“The first firm that hired me, all they had me do was sit at the computer
and plot sprinkler heads on a big housing track,” Kao says. “I
got so bored of it I was like, I just wanna be designing stuff. But in
that profession, you have to work your way up and pay your dues. I
was used to doing my own thing. I felt like I wasn’t utilizing my skills
and I was wasting my time.”
A few years later, Kao earned a master’s degree in real estate development
at USC and proceeded to work for several planning and consulting
firms involved with large-scale master planning. When he
married, he took a job with the City of Signal Hill as an associate
planner.
“Again, I wasn’t doing much on the creative side,” he says. “But the
job at least gave me a steady income and allowed me to travel.”
When his marriage ended four years later, he vowed that he would
turn over a new leaf and start fresh. He saved up for three years, not
taking a single vacation. Then in 2006, he took a six-week solo trip
to Spain, armed with a cheap point-and-shoot camera. When he
returned home, he invited family and friends over and shared his
adventures with a slideshow of cultural landmarks, landscapes, portraits
and other moments captured in time.
He did the same after his trip to Machu Picchu. Then the Gauchos.
His hobby blossomed when he bought himself a professional digital
SLR camera, a Canon 50D.
“That kind of changed everything,” he says. “You make an investment
like that — you’ve got a body but also all these different lenses
you have to buy. Then you have to learn how to use the thing
because everything is super expensive. By that point I was fully committed.”
When he wasn’t in the office, he was attending local photography
workshops, classes and studying on his own. On the weekends, he
frequented the Queen Mary in Long Beach, downtown L.A., Venice
Beach and his hometown of Palos Verdes to practice. During the
week, after work, he pored over these images, editing and processing
them.
In 2012, he decided it was now or never. He put in his letter of resignation
and sold his house. He went to Montana and enlisted in a
five-month program at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography.
He has been pursuing photography professionally ever since, building
up a wide range of shots for his portfolio.
“It’s opened up a whole new world for me,” he says. “Now, every
day is different. I’m back to being creative again. That’s something
I’ve been lacking for so long. What was apparent though, was that
even though I was working this job, my heart was always in my photography.
It got to a point where I realized I should be doing this
every day and try to make a living doing it."
Much of his work since has focused on travel photography, his first
love, as well as promotional and action photography. His work has
shown in the midwest edition of AAA magazine and the travel industry
magazine Recommend. He recently spent three days in Ouray,
Colorado, shooting runners from Team Adidas. Seven of his images
were published in Trail Runner magazine. In addition, he has paired
up with model-turned-professional runner Michele Graglia for
action shoots. Kao says he hopes to find local South Bay athletes to
work with.
Kao will be visiting India for the first time this December with two
other photographers. Then in January he will be spending several
weeks on Easter Island, a remote Chilean island in Polynesia, to photograph
the annual Tapati festival, which includes horse and boat
races, a parade and a triathlon event. He plans to document the
weeks of preparation leading up to the festival and eventually publish
a book about Easter Island culture.
“What I enjoy the most about what I’m doing now is I can meet so
many interesting people,” Kao says. “I realized that photography is
like a bridge that allows me to connect with people.”
Kao’s work can be purchased at The Artists Studio at the
Promenade on the Peninsula located at 550 Deep Valley Dr., #159,
Story and photo by David Mendez
Katherine Gould knows her
libraries like the back of her hand,
from funding figures to upcoming
events to remodeling concerns.
In the hour that we spoke, only one
question stumped her.
“Where do I think the most beautiful
part of the library is? Oh…oh, I don’t
know,” she said, falling silent for nearly
ten seconds.
Eventually, she settled on the children’s
section, a wide-open room filled
with light, art and rows of bookshelves.
The afternoon hours are when it’s at its
Directing
Third Place
the
Award-winning Library Director
Katherine Gould works to create a place
where everyone, from the community to her
staff, feels they belong
busiest. Even after 5 p.m., it’s still packed with
school-age children who are reading, working and
playing with one another.
“I don’t know though,” Gould said. “It’s all beautiful
to me.”
Gould, a Redondo Beach resident and 11-year
director of the Palos Verdes Library District, has been
given the 2015 Library Director Award from the
California Public Library Advocates. The annuallygiven
adulation recognizes exceptional work with a
board of trustees, library foundation or “friends of the
library” group.
Though she is proud of the award, she feels that it’s
a reflection not just of herself, but of everyone that
works with the Palos Verdes Library District.
“Everyone on the team — staff, volunteers, trustees
— are all super generous, and all together have
allowed us to make this a terrific library district.”
Much of her libraries’ success, she feels, is a result
of her staff’s creativity. “They’ve really embraced the
idea of getting into the community, creating relationships
and partnerships to enhance services,” she said.
Their entrepreneurial spirit has led the library to
develop proctoring and passport services, as well as
programs such as the “pop-up” mobile library.
“We’re not too respectful of hierarchy here; anyone
with a good idea can try to figure out a way to make
it happen,” she said, noting that a member of maintenance
came up with an LED bulb replacement plan
that’s cut electricity usage by nearly 25 percent.
“We have an environment where everyone can contribute,”
she said.
That environment comes from a bit of an unorthodox
background. A native of Santa Barbara, a divorce
and subsequent remarriage took Gould and her
mother to Canada, where she completed school
through her undergraduate degree. For her post-grad
work, she made her way back to California to pursue
a Master’s degree in Library Science from the
University of Southern California.
From there, she spent three years working as a
librarian before going into the corporate world. Her
knowledge of systems and organization gave her an
advantage and before long she was working in management
for an aluminum company in Australia,
staying in the metal industry from 1989 to 2003.
Wanting to change directions and get out of corporate
life, Gould and her husband Don moved to
Redondo Beach, where they purchased a home from
within their family.
The pair vowed to take a few months to figure out
their next professional steps in their new home when
she found the posting for what would become her
new career: “Library Director; library experience
desirable, business experience essential.”
It’s been a perfect fit for her.
The Palos Verdes Library District’s status as its own
entity, featuring its own board of directors and support
organizations, separate from local governments,
makes the non-profit as much a business as any other
pillar of the community. And she’s ultimately responsible
for every aspect of her libraries, from IT to personnel,
maintenance to staff management.
“If you’re in a county [library system], you’ve got
other departments who run those things. Here, we’ve
got to run the whole business, and we’re not set up to
48 Peninsula People • October 2015

make a profit,” she said. “Our job is to make our revenues stretch as
far as we possibly can.”
Though Gould jokes that there’s not a whole lot else one can do
with a bachelor’s in history, there was more to it than that.
The difficulties of a divorce took their toll on Gould, and her
school librarian helped her get through it.
“She saw that I was lonely, that I needed attention, and she
allowed me to come and help in the library,” Gould said. “You can
change someone’s life by giving them a place to come and exposing
them to ideas and thoughts and authors they hadn’t been exposed to
before.”
That experience ties directly into her library’s mission of helping
to make the Palos Verdes District Libraries a “third place,” a social
area going beyond home, and work or school.
“We’re the only place that is for everybody in the community; it
doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, have a home or don’t, what
your ethnic or cultural background is or your beliefs are, this is a
place for you,” she said. “There might be something that’ll offend
you somewhere in these walls, but this is a place where everyone
rubs shoulders against each other.”
Many of the beliefs Gould carries from her time in the aluminum
industry still apply today, she says. One mentor in particular opened
her eyes to the idea that the most important work in any organization
is usually performed at the lowest levels on the organizational
chart.
“People can debate who has the most important job, but if the
bathrooms aren’t clean, then the experience that the public has
sucks; if the people working at the frontline service desk re-shelve
wrong, if they’re rude to customers…they’re the bedrock of the
organization, and I really respect and value the work that they do.
They’re where the rubber hits the road,” she said. “We have what we
think are good ideas, and they’re the ones looking around saying
‘Yeah, that’s not going to work.’”
Though she says there’s much to celebrate about her community,
Gould feels that the way residents of The Hill band together to help
their own is particularly special.
“There are so many organizations that rely on community support,
getting volunteers and fundraising, and when community members
see a need to protect and enhance their lifestyle, they roll up their
sleeves and do something,” she said. “It happens in other communities,
but maybe not as much as it does here. We just have to try and
meet those expectations.”
Given the swell of activity at their libraries, and the fact that the
biggest problem PVLD faces is a lack of space, it’s safe to say that
the demand for activities at the library is a marker of their exceptional
work.
Walking toward the exit and surveying the tables of students with
books in front of them, Gould looked back.
“Anyone who says that libraries are defunct, that we’ve been
replaced by Google? Just send them over here in the afternoon.” PEN
Preserve your timeless treasure
We live in an age where just about everything is disposable.
Yet centuries ago when the world’s finest
clockmakers were hard at work, their aim was to
create a mechanical marvel that operates continuously and
last forever. Imagine a hand made complex mechanism of
inter-working parts designed to keep time accurately. Your
clock is a work of art and your job is to keep this timeless
treasure healthy for the next generation.
Your clock reminds you of its presence every time you wind
it and if its accuracy is not what it used to be, or its chimes are
not as strong rythmic, or maybe it just stops. That means it’s
talking to you and telling you that its endless life is in jeopardy.
It is imperative to maintain and service your clock regularly.
Oil gets old and dry forcing the train of gears to work twice
as hard to accomplish their goal. This results in damage that
drastically shortens the life of a fine timepiece.
Michel Medawar has been extending the lives of timepieces
for over fifty years as his father did fifty years before. He is
the inventor of the first talking clock in the world. He is a
graduate from Patek Philippe in Geneva, Switzerland, The
Theod Wagner clock Co. in Wiesbaden, Germany, and the
Howard Miller Clock Co. in Zeeland, Michigan. Call him so
that he may come to your home and offer you a free estimate
for servicing your clock. Or bring your wall or mantel clock to
our store to see our showroom and receive the same complementary
diagnosis.
Richard Chandler Seamans, 73, of Rolling Hills Estates, passed
away September 27, while pursuing his greatest passion (after skiing),
hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Yosemite National
Park. A celebration of his life was held October 2 at Rolling Hills
University in 1963. He earned his law degree in 1966 from Harvard
met and first dated in 1958. Suzy served as a city council member
and mayor in Rolling Hills Estates. Richard practiced law for
Rockwell International and The Boeing Company for over 30 years.
He retired in 2001 and spent the last 14 years actively enjoying life.
In the past several years he became an aspiring photographer, capturing
the scenic landscapes of his hikes and the many destinations
to which he travelled with his wife. He recently received an award
for one of his photographs.
Richard is survived by his wife, Susan; children Pamela Seamans
All About Loving Care meets social needs
All About Loving Care was founded from the desire to meet social needs
that a nurse cannot -- companionship, conversation, comfort, activities,
errands, personal hygiene, some housekeeping and nice meals. Oftentimes,
the only contact seniors and the disabled have is when their caregiver is
present. The greatest gift, oftentimes, is when we create the perfect match,
which can literally transform the lives of our clients and their families. That is
our mission. That is our promise. Because everyone deserves a comfortable,
Kimberly Davidson, Collaborative Center of Southern California
Helping families with kinder, gentler divorces
by Robb Fulcher
I
nspired by her own divorce experience, Kimberly Davidson has devoted
herself to guiding families through kinder, gentler, courtroom-free divorces,
designed to meet the needs of each spouse while protecting the interests
of their children.
Davidson, based in the South Bay with clients in Los Angeles and Orange
counties, steers clear of the courtroom entirely, serving as a neutral mediator
in divorces, and guiding clients through “collaborative practice” divorces. “I
had a 3-year-old daughter, 25 years ago, when I found myself in a divorce I
was not expecting,” Davidson said.
At the time, she had a master’s degree in counseling and planned to get
a Ph.D., but she changed course to take up the law.
“There were so few resources for families going through divorce. I had a
transformative experience. I thought I would do something different, work
with people in a different way,” she said.
“There had to be a better way to do divorce,” she said.
As her daughter entered kindergarten, Davidson entered law school, taking
classes at night and finishing in four years.
She began working as a family law attorney, and 15 years ago she opened
her own practice. She began serving as a neutral mediator, helping spouses
and their separate lawyers work out divorce agreements.
Then she learned about a method of divorce that had spread from the
Midwest to Northern California – Collaborative Practice, in which spouses
negotiate in four-way meetings, with their attorneys present, and pledge not
to go to court.
Davidson estimates that about 95 percent of her clients successfully complete
divorce mediation, and 80 to 85 percent successfully complete collaborative
practice.
In either method, a couple must trust each other enough to see a non-litigated
divorce as a possibility.
“In my personal opinion, families
going through divorce do not
belong in the legal system. It’s really
about families, and continuing relationships,
and how to co-parent.
We want to help solve problems,
not create more of them,” she said.
“Traditional adversarial divorce is
like a tug-of-war. If you tug and pull
and get what you want, eventually
you’ll lose something else.”
Mediation is more difficult when
there is “a real imbalance of power
in the relationship,” whether financial
or psychological. In those
cases, the less powerful partner can
feel more protected going the collaborative
route. Either way,
Davidson urges clients to get support
from professionals such as
divorce coaches, child specialists and divorce financial planners. With that in
mind, she and family therapist Jon Kramer created the Collaborative Center
of Southern California, which brings together in one space at their Hermosa
Beach offices, those professionals that support a non-litigation approach.
Sometimes, she said, a couple will avoid divorce after consulting with
experts. If the problems are financial, for instance, a post-nuptial agreement
might iron them out.
“Divorce is one aspect of what we do,” Davidson said.
Law & Mediation Offices of Pauline Rosen
Firm Mission Statement: To be a leading family law litigation and
mediation firm in the South Bay, providing clients with compassionate
counseling and advice, while presenting the highest professional
legal advocacy.
Located on the Manhattan Beach Studio Campus in the Media
Building, we are situated to serve entertainment industry clients with
discretion, located adjacent to major aerospace companies and
frequently represent aerospace executives and engineering professionals,
as well as homemakers, school teachers, and banking professionals.
Premarital and pre-Domestic Partnership Agreements: We provide
legal counseling, advice, and agreements for those who are about
to marry, cohabitate (live together), or register as domestic partners.
Mediation: We serve as a neutral mediator for parties seeking to
resolve their issues outside of Court. We mediate all aspects of child
custody, child support, spousal support, retirement benefits, pension
plans, personal property, real property, and closely-held business
interests. As part of our full service program for parties with pending
Court cases, the agreements reached in mediation are drafted as
formal Court judgments or orders and submitted to the Court so
they are legally binding on the parties as orders of Court. This can
be accomplished without either party ever having to go to Court
personally.
Collaborative Law: We engage
in the collaborative law team
approach for those clients willing
to agree to forego litigation
and work with a team of professionals
to reach an out of
Court agreement, fully resolving
their divorce. The collaborative
team consists of adult
and child mental health professionals,
financial planners, and
lawyers working together to
help a couple deal with the
emotional, parental, financial,
and legal aspects of their
divorce.
Litigation: Even when both parties
are represented, most family
law matters are settled by the attorneys and parties working
together towards settlement. The California Family Code is
designed to foster settlement. However, when settlement is not possible,
we prepare a case fully and completely for trial. We work with
a team of leading expert witnesses, for example CPAs and real
estate appraisers, to present a client’s case to the client’s greatest
advantage.
aker, Burton & Lundy, a seaside law firm that has won more than
$4 billion for its clients over four decades, has carefully augmented
its experienced and accomplished partnership with a crew of
dynamic young lawyers.
“We have the wisdom and experience you can rely on, and now this
young blood bringing their energy into the firm,” said partner Albro
Lundy. “We’ve got a dynamic organization here.”
The firm has built a reputation far beyond the South Bay as fierce litigators.
Addition to winning $4 billion for California energy consumers,
it also won a decision before the California Supreme Court that has
reduced litigation.
The firm’s backbone is its partnership of Brad N. Baker, an estate, probate
and trust attorney who has twice argued before the U.S. Supreme
Court, Kent Burton, a real estate and business lawyer with Fortune 500
clients, and Lundy, the Trial Lawyer of the Year for Consumer Attorneys
of California.
The partners have been quietly reloading with young guns, aimed at
the firm’s focus areas of personal injury, real estate, business, estate
planning, probate litigation and employment law.
Fresh faces
Evan Koch, named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers, has won millions
of dollars in judgments and settlements for his clients. Koch is known for
his hard work ethic and quick intelligence.
He graduated cum laude from Washington College of Law at
American University, served as a Law Review editor, and clerked for
several distinguished jurists.
BB&L also added Teresa Klinkner, an attorney and law professor
experienced in real estate and corporate law who is a Phi Beta Kappa,
Baker, Burton & Lundy
Accomplished firm adds ‘young blood’
cum laude graduate from Centre College of Kentucky.
Attorney Clint Wilson, who joined BB&L in May, specializes in business
and real estate transactions with a range of individual, professional
and corporate clients.
A cum laude graduate of Loyola Law School, Clint was a scholar
athlete at St. Mary’s. Known for his innate understanding of legal
mechanics, he sees critical details often unseen.
Dedicated staff
BB&L is staffed up and down with dedicated, longtime employees.
Jeri Munn, Lundy’s assistant, has been with Lundy 26 years.
Office manager Debbie Rieger retired after more than 10 years but
still helps with special events. Paralegal Jacque McCarthy recently
retired after more than two decades.
Paralegal Jennifer Baker has 34 years, paralegal Jenny Wood has 19
years, and Burton’s assistant Susan Serris has 17 years.
Bookkeeper Cathy Stark has 29 years.
“The only way people leave this office is if they retire,” Lundy said.
Community mainstay
BB&L, which moved to Hermosa Beach from Venice in 1980, is the
oldest continuously run business on upper Pier Avenue. The firm
expanded from its original storefront into a second building in 1990,
and into a third building in 2005.
The partners have seen the city grow and prosper while seeing their
clients grow and prosper as well.
WWII sailor, author honored
Rolling Hills resident Darwin Horn, Sr. was honored last month with a resolution
from the California State Assembly for his World War II service in the
Sea of Japan aboard the Admirable-class minesweeper the USS Serene.
Horn enlisted after graduating from high school, at age 17, and became a
member of the engineering division, working with the ship’s large diesel
engines. At the end of the war, the USS Serene swept thousands of mines
that the Japanese had set around their home islands and occupied territories.
The State Resolution was presented by State Assemblyman David Hadley
(R-Manhattan Beach).
"I'm hopeful that this recognition
will bring more attention
to the Navy sailors who
served with me on the USS
Serene during WWII," Horn
said.
The Department of Veterans
Affairs estimates that by
2036, there will no longer be
any living veterans from
World War II.
Horn recounted his war
experiences in his second
book U.S.S. Serene: memoirs
of a World War II
minesweeper crew, published
in 2010. Horn is also
the author of Dar's story:
