Copenhagen Gay Guide
Despite not being one of the biggest
cities in Europe, Copenhagen still has
a diversified gay scene. The majority
of the places are situated in the streets
around Copenhagen City Hall and the
beginning of Strøget – the pedestrian
street. It is very easy getting around
from one place to another as most
gay bars and clubs are within walking
distance.
According to Danish law, smoking
restrictions apply at most bars, cafés,
restaurants and nightclubs. Smoking
is only allowed in designated smoking
areas as well as in bars with a serving
area of less than 40 square metres.
This means that in half of the bars
you are free from smoke, and in the
other half of the bars you are free to
smoke. On page 60 you can see the
smoking policy at the different bars
and clubs, and choose for yourself
whether you prefer to party with or
without cigarettes.
Bars and cafés
Centralhjørnet is the oldest gay bar in
Copenhagen. But old does not mean
dull and boring. It is one of the liveliest
pubs on Copenhagen’s gay scene. Both
young guys and more mature men are
having fun here. Centralhjørnet presents
live entertainment every Thursday.
Can-Can is a gay bar with a long tradition
behind it. It is a small and oblong
bar, which is very popular amongst its
many regular guests. The service is
good and most guests are easy to get
in touch with.
Café Intime is situated in Frederiksberg
and it has an atmosphere of
forgotten time with leaded windows,
dark red walls and brass candlesticks.
Café Intime is mostly a gay and lesbian
bar but some straight people come
there as well.
Code is the new venue on Copenhagen’s
gay scene. It’s a lounge bar
and a café with shows and other entertainment
every Wednesday night.
Every Friday and Saturday night a DJ
is mixing hits to please the guests at
this popular bar.
Oscar is a bar and cafe that faces Copenhagen
City Hall. Oscar is a popular
choice and is normally busy during the
day as well as in the evening. It has a
DJ playing every Friday and Saturday
night.
Chaca is a lesbian bar and café but
gay men and straight guests are also
welcome. It’s located next to many
gay venues in Copenhagen’s main gay
street – Studiestræde.
Jailhouse has bartenders in uniform,
barred windows and small cells
where guests can sit and enjoy a beer
together with their friends. Jailhouse
is filled with lots of customers and it
often hosts special events.
Men’s Bar only admits entrance to
men. However, there is no strict dress
code so feel free to show up in the clothes
you prefer. Shots and drinks are
among the cheapest in town. A special
attraction is the free brunch every first
Sunday of the month.
Masken Bar is famous for its mixture
of younger, more mature, and lesbian
customers. Masken has a very easygoing
atmosphere, meaning it is very
easy to get into contact with the other
customers.
Cosy Bar is a sparkling place both
during the nights and the early morning
hours. Cosy Bar is well-known as a
very good place to pick up guys, either
by the long bar or at the dance floor.
DJ’s every Friday and Saturday night.
Never Mind is another night bar
open until very late. Here you can listen
to Eurovision Song Contest hits
and many other cheerful pop songs.
It is just opposite the entrance to Copenhagen’s
most busy cruising park,
Ørstedsparken.
Amigo Bar is located in Frederiksberg,
only a short taxi ride or a tenminute
walk from the other gay bars
in the city centre. Gays, lesbians and
straights hang out at Amigo Bar.
Kafe Knud is a nice little café for HIV
positive men and women. Kafe Knud
