A Brussel renaissance "Pergola" tapestry.
A double pergola supported
by caryatids in form of Saters, figures
with flutes and tambourines.
Background with other pergola’s located
around a basin, two Belvederes
in the form of towers with terraces
and moutains on the horizon.
The borders are filled with an imitation
of bronze volutes, vases and
medallions. The medallions are
completed with allegorical scenes
of animals from the antique "Physiologis",
the rebirth of phoenix. The
Saters refer to the god Pan and to
the "pastoral life". At the same time
the grapes refer to Bacchus, the god
of wine. Dedicates to the Jan II Raes
worshop. Ca. 1600-1620.

Typological:
This type of pergola with the columns
represented by caryatids is
based on a preceding Flemish model,
the archtype of the famous series
of the metamorphose of "Vertumnus
and Pomona" made for the
Habsburg family in 1546, wich is today
part of the collection in Madrid
and Vieanna. A reedition of the series
was made in Brussels Ca. 1600.
Hans Vredemann de Vries (1526-
1609) was the first designer who
made a publication on suchlike garden
designs, the "Hortorum viridiaromrumque
formae" published in
Antwerpen 1583.

France with similar scenery and border design are know and dedicated
to Jan II Raes workshop. Another related example was made
for the Cardinal Montalto in Rome but is now lost. A variant of the
this "Pergola supported by caryatids" design is preserved in a private
collection in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The Jan II Raes workshop: The workshop Raes was considered to be
one of the most important Brussel workshops at the time (1580-
1620) Jan II Raes was mayor of Brussels in 1634-1635. Jan Raes II
has worked with Jaco Geubels several times and has lead the executi-
