A children’s home in the movies The feature film Inuk – a contemporary drama about an inner and outer journey through Greenland – has won 20 international film festival awards. Focus is now on an Oscar nomination By Christian Schultz-Lorentzen Two documentaries about Uummannaq Children’s Home’s many years of experience using the dog sledding culture as an effective, pedagogic tool were not enough. This was the sentiment of the American film director Mike Magidson and the French anthropologist Jean-Michel Huctin, who were behind the TV documentaries. Other, stronger means were required in order to give the most perfect account. Thus the idea of making Inuk, a feature film about the sledding projects at the children’s home, was born. A film that has since taken the world by storm. – We did not feel that the documentaries had fully revealed the whole essence in their account of the children’s home’s unique pedagogy. Something was missing. We wanted to tell the story about how you can change your life for the better, despite a difficult start, by coming into contact with nature and your own Greenlandic culture, says Jean-Michel Huctin. He has worked a total of 4 years, split over several periods, at the children’s home in Uummannaq, so he has a special understanding of the deep, cultural roots behind the many conflicts. – To attain the best expression, we combined the authenticity from the documentaries with the emotions you can put into a feature film. The script, which we wrote together, was not pulled out of thin air, but inspired by the many true stories we knew from the children’s home and from among the hunters of Uummannaq, tells Jean-Michel Huctin. After several years of work on the script and a series of fruitless approaches to production companies for financial support, the project was floundering. A surrealistic enterprise started, although there were hardly two coins to rub together. Hard times – In late winter, under chaotic conditions the film team shot scenes with amateur actors, most of them quite young teenagers from the children’s home in the town of Uummannaq and the village of Qaarsut, tells Ole Jørgen Hammeken, who plays the lead male role in the film and continues: – Particularly the film work on location on the sea ice, with temperatures of down to minus 30 degrees, was a challenge for the film team. They spent nights in sled tents, suffering hardships which none of their colleagues would probably have put up with, says Hammeken. He works at the Uummannaq Children’s Home, whose principal, Ann Andreasen, has helped to make the film happen. – The film, which was made on an extremely small budget, would never have become a reality without the great goodwill of the people of Uummannaq or the ability of the children to act so easily in front of the cameras. Filming took eight weeks, during which time we worked together with 16 hunters with dogsleds and more than 300 dogs. We received invaluable assistance from the children’s home and the staff there. But most important of all: the Greenlandic actors managed to be natural, dramatic and full of life, when it was necessary, tells Jean- Michel Huctin, who emphasizes special cinematographic mile
stones in Inuk, which tells a story on several levels. Inuk is the first ”road movie” on ice. It is a strong, contemporary drama about an internal and an external journey through Greenland. And it is the first film with exclusively Greenlandic actors speaking their own language. – Inuk tells a positive story about a teenager who successfully solves his problems and makes a positive change in his life. It is a fantastic message about hope for all young people. The film shows that Greenlanders have a wonderful inner strength, enabling them to overcome their own problems. This strength comes from their fantastic culture, which brings nature and man together. – Furthermore, the Greenlandic culture will become known all around the world, wherever the film is shown. I have seen showings of the film where men and women cried, for example in Alaska, Tropical Reunion Island, Iceland, USA and France, because they were touched by the simple, universal authenticity of the story. – Finally, many indigenous people have expressed pleasure in seeing a positive story from Greenland. They in particular understand the film’s message, because in many ways they are in a similar situation as Greenlanders, says Jean-Michel Huctin. On its way, the film has received financial support from Prince Albert of Monaco, who is a fervent dog sled driver. This donation made it possible to complete the editing of the film. After the first cut of the film, a new version was cut and different music was added to Inuk. This was done after instructions from the former president for Universal Pictures, Thom Mount. At present, a lot of work is going into the next goal for the final version of Inuk, which had its world premier in Nuuk this spring: A nomination for the world’s most prestigious film award, the American Oscar. kAl Frankrigimi Paris Polar Filmfestivalimit Inuup peqataaffigisaani. Whether Inuk will become an international blockbuster on its own, unusual terms, only time will tell. So far, the film has been in great demand. At the moment of writing, it has already been sold for distribution in cinemas in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Korea, while negotiations are ongoing with the USA. And if audiences in Greenland are anything to judge by, cinema goers have something to look forward to. More than five thousand saw the film this spring, as it was shown on its triumphant tour of screenings in Nuuk, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Aasiaat and Uummannaq. – I have not seen anything like this for a long time. The film drew in people who would not normally go to the cinema in Katuaq. Usually, there is only applause at a premier. But with Inuk, there was applause at the end of every screening. I did not expect people to be so touched by the film, says Bill Bering, manager of the cinema in Katuaq, Nuuk. tHe plot When the authorities in Nuuk find 16-year old Inuk (Gaaba Petersen) sleeping in a car, they decide to remove him from his alcoholic mother and violent stepfather and send him to a children’s home in Uummannaq in North Greenland. Here, he meets the reserved polar bear hunter Ikuma (Ole Jørgen Hammeken), who has also had a problematic past. The children’s home’s friendly headmistress sends the two of them on a hunting trip. It turns into an unusual odyssey. This Greenlandic equivalent of a road movie presents a portrait of the two loners, who gradually become closer and learn more about themselves and about life.
