Sound and Dramaturgy/
Sound and Spacing
Performing Sound-Spaces as stages of Inter-est – Dramaturgy
as participatory performance-process of new ways of social reality
Best&Kellner strikingly discussed the dualism of a world
marked by new so called interactive media. (With regard to
Debord) they can provoke mere spectacles, confusing and paralyzing
human potential, strengthening symptoms of alienation.
On the other hand they bear several opportunities for creative
engagement and empowerment, encouraging human beings to
unfold their entire potential, and hence (reconsidering Arendt)
to become human at all. Provoking (inter-)action they then can
function as a counteraction to alienation. Based on the concept
of inter-est developed by German philosopher Hannah Arendt
I would like to demonstrate how contemporary performances
using communication media enable participants to perform virtual
sound spaces. The aim is to stress their wait range importance
in a sociopolitical context, which lies in the creation and
reinvention of public spaces.
To clarify the argument I am going to sketch an analysis of two
examples from performance practice: Rider Spoke by Blast
Theory and We are forests by Emilie Grenier and Duncan Speakman.
With reference to the second meeting of the workgroup
dramaturgy I will come to a short conclusion reflecting on the
dramaturgy of these performances. I suggest that it is characterized
by its demand for contribution, which at the same time
is negotiating alienation by outlining a concept for a new way of
social reality as a community getting closer by getting involved
[not in interactive spectacles but] in (inter)action: which is the
disclosure of identity.
Charlotte Gruber holds a Bachelor in Culture and Technology
since 2010. In 2011 she finished a Master in Theater Studies
at the University of Amsterdam. In her thesis Interactions –
actual and virtual Spaces as Stages of Interest she looked at
two different trends in contemporary theatre: the trend to have
participatory performances outside and the trend to engage
communication media within performances. Based on a critical
reading of Hannah Arendt and Guy Debord she conducted an
analysis of twelve performances examining their sociopolitical
potential, which – she affirms – lies in the potential to create
new or reinvent public spaces, actual as well as virtual ones by
engaging the spectator. Charlotte is now doctoral researcher
for Prof. Pewny at the Department of Theatre, Performance and
Media Studies at Ghent University, where she is doing research
on contemporary Antigone performances within the research
project Antigone in/as Transition. A Study on the Performing
Arts Status Quo in Europe (in its Transcontinental Contexts). She
is a member of S:PAM (Studies in Performing Arts and Media)
at Ghent University.
Topologie des Sounds –
Soundlandschaften, Klangdokumente
Moritz Hannemann, B.A. studiert Theaterwissenschaft und
Komparatistik an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Ausgehend von
topologischen Fragestellungen sucht er einen affirmativen Zugang
zur Möglichkeit einer zeitgenössischen Tragödie, in seiner
Masterarbeit in Auseinandersetzung mit Benjamin und Hölderlin.
Anschließend voraussichtlich Promotion. Weitere Arbeitsfelder
sind u.a.
