Between the Grandhotel Pupp
and dorothea’s Meads
The picturesque scenery of Dorothea´s Meads has fascinated
lovers of nature for at least 200 years. It is the piece of
land between the Grandhotel Pupp and the Art Gallery,
which was named after the Dorothea Pavilion. The local
romantic rendezvous of water, rocks and woods has always
been a delicacy for artists and dreamers of all sorts. The
unique open-air gallery which contains laudatory inscriptions
as well as inscriptions of thanks did not come into being
in the valley of the Teplá River by accident. It was
hardly possible to find a more suitable place for the bust of
J.W. Goethe.
Being in love, Count Christian Clam-Gallas had even a summerhouse
built here for Duchess Dorotka Kuronská in
1791. Lovers have been declaring their love to each other
here up to these days. It is known that Giacomo Casanova,
a famous expert on women, visited once the pavilion. The
vase standing in it was decorated with the following inscription
in those days already: Oh! If only the past times could
become the future! There is also the Dorotka Spring (today
closed to the public) near the pavilion. It has been known
as the Acidulous Spring since the late 16th century. At first
stone seats were built here which were later followed by
modest baths. There is a vaulted bridge across the Teplá
River and near the residential building of the Sun Bath
(former Gas and Sun Spa Building VI) in place of the wooden
Archduke Karl Bridge dating from 1801.
