Editorial 

Vážení hosté, milí čtenáři, 

v Grandhotelu Pupp právě započala nová etapa karlovarského lázeňství. Vybudováním rozsáhlých balneoprovozů 

s bazénem se zrodila nová tradice proslaveného hotelu. V tomto čísle Vám chceme představit velmi moderní 

lázeňské provozy vybudované v kontrastu s historizujícími hotelovými objekty. Grandhotel Pupp je tedy nejen 

vyhlášeným a oblíbeným hotelem, ale stává se také úplným lázeňským zařízením se všemi tradičními i moderními 

procedurami. Ráda bych Vás také upozornila na nový vzhled náměstí před hotelem s čerstvě zasazeným 

třicetiletým javorem. Grandhotel Pupp je rovněž golfovým a kongresovým hotelem, dokáže také poskytnout 

dokonalé služby firemním akcím. O tom svědčí např. nedávný HOPI ples, pořádaný majitelem firmy HOPI 

Františkem Piškaninem, který byl vyhlášen nejlepším českým podnikatelem roku 2012. Součástí hotelových 

prostor je také Pupp Casino Club, kde jsme provedli rekonstrukci interiéru. I letos Vám nabízíme celou řadu 

cenově výhodných pobytových balíčků a v jednotlivých měsících také lákavé menu v našem Grandrestaurantu.

Geehrte Gäste, liebe Leser, 

im Grandhotel Pupp begann gerade eine neue Etappe des Karlsbader Kurwesens. Dadurch, dass man einen umfangreichen Balneobetrieb 

mit einem Relaxpool errichtete, entstand eine neue Tradition des berühmten Hotels. In dieser Ausgabe möchte man Ihnen die sehr modernen 

Kurbetriebe vorstellen, die im Kontrast mit den historisierenden Hotelgebäuden erbaut wurden. Das Grandhotel Pupp ist also nicht 

nur ein berühmtes und beliebtes Hotel, sondern es wird auch zu einer Kureinrichtung mit allen traditionellen sowie modernen 

Anwendungen. Ich möchte Sie gern auch auf die neue Gestaltung des Platzes vor dem Hotel mit einem frisch gepflanzten dreißigjährigen 

Ahorn aufmerksam machen. Das Grandhotel Pupp ist ebenso ein Golf- und Kongresshotel. Weiter kann es vollkommene Dienstleistungen 

auf den Firmenveranstaltungen bieten, worüber der neulich veranstaltete HOPI Ball zeugt. Diesen veranstaltete der Eigentümer der Firma 

HOPI Herr František Piškanin, der zu dem besten tschechischen Unternehmer des Jahres 2012 erklärt wurde. Ein Teil der Hotel räumlichkeiten 

ist auch der Pupp Casino Club, wo man die Innenräume renovierte. Auch in diesem Jahr bietet man Ihnen eine ganze Reihe von 

preisgünstigen Aufenthaltspaketen und in den einzelnen Monaten auch ein verlockendes Menü in unserem Grandrestaurant. Wir freuen

A new stage in Karlovy Vary balneology has just started in the Grandhotel Pupp. Building new vast spa departments with a relax pool 

marked the beginning of a new tradition of the famous hotel. We would like to present the very modern spa departments to you. They were 

built as a contrast to historizing hotel buildings. So the Grandhotel Pupp is not only a renowned and popular hotel but it has also become 

a complete spa facility with all both traditional and modern treatments. I would also like to direct your attention to the new appearance of 

the square in front of the hotel with a recently planted 30-year-old maple tree. The Grandhotel Pupp is also a golf and congress hotel and 

is able to provide perfect services to firm events, which the recent HOPI ball has proved. It was organized by the owner of the firm HOPI 

František Piškanin, the best Czech businessman of the year 2012. A part of the hotel rooms is the Pupp Casino Club too, whose interior was 

renovated. We are offering a number of advantageous stay packages this year too and an attractive menu in our Grand restaurant in individual 

months. We are looking forward to meeting you in all rooms of the Grandhotel Pupp.

Zahájení lázeňské sezóny 

První květnový víkend byla v Karlových Varech zahájena letní lázeňská 

sezóna. Primátor města Petr Kulhánek v uvítacím projevu označil 

nastupující období za velmi významné, neboť jednak začíná platit 

nový lázeňský statut, jednak se město stává oficiálním kandidátem 

zápisu do seznamu světového dědictví UNESCO. Tradičního svěcení 

pramenů se ujal papežský nuncius Giuseppe Leanza. Slavnosti pokračovaly 

mší, průvodem Karla IV., koncerty a radovánkami. 

Hodina Země 

Symbolickým ztlumením světel se Grandhotel Pupp v sobotu 23. března 

2013 od 20.30 do 21.30 hod. přihlásil k mezinárodnímu happeningu 

Hodina Země na podporu ochrany klimatu. Rádi jsme tak v rámci 

celosvětové kampaně podpořili obecný zájem o šetrnější přístup k životnímu 

prostředí. Naši hosté využili tuto jedinečnou chvíli k romantickému 

posezení při svíčkách v našich restaurantech a barech. 

Stunde der Erde 

Mit symbolischer Lichtdämpfung unterstützte das Grandhotel 

Pupp am Samstag den 23. März 2013 von 20.30 bis 21.30 Uhr die 

internationale Aktion Stunde der Erde. Wir möchten mit dieser 

Umweltschutzaktion das Umweltbewusstsein erhöhen. Unsere 

Gäste genossen den einzigartigen Moment beim romantischen 

Verweilen in unseren Restaurants und Bars. 

Earth Hour 

With symbolic light dimming on Saturday 23rd March 2013 from 

8.30 to 9.30 p.m. the Grandhotel Pupp participated in the international 

happening Earth Hour supporting climate protection. 

Within the global campaign we would like to support the general 

interest in friendly approach to the enviroment. Our guests took 

advantage of this unique moment for a romantic candlelit sitting in 

our restaurants and bars. 

Die Eröffnung der Kursaison 

Das erste Maiwochenende wurde in Karlsbad die sommerliche 

Kursaison eröffnet. Der Oberbürgermeister der Stadt Petr Kulhánek 

bezeichnete die kommende Zeit in seiner Begrüßungsrede für sehr 

bedeutend, denn einerseits tritt der neue Kurstatus in Kraft, anderseits 

wird die Stadt zum offiziellen Kandidaten für die UNESCO- 

Weltkulturerbe-Liste. Die traditionelle Quellenweihe erteilte der 

Apostolische Nuntius Giuseppe Leanza. Weiter gab es eine Messe, 

den Umzug Karl IV., Konzerte und viel Vergnügen. 

Opening of the Spa Season 

The summer spa season was opened in Karlovy Vary at the first 

weekend of May. The mayor of the town Petr Kulhánek termed the 

coming season as a very important one in his welcoming speech 

because a new spa status has started to be valid and the town is 

becoming an official candidate for an entry in the World Heritage 

UNESCO list. Giuseppe Leanza, a papal nuncio, consecrated the 

springs and the celebrations continued with a mass, Charles IV 

procession, concerts and other events.

Food Festival Karlovy Vary 

První květnová sobota opět patřila nejlepším kuchařským a barmanským 

týmům z Karlových Varů a regionu. Návštěvníkům letošního 

Food Festivalu připravily na 5000 porcí specialit. Grandhotel 

Pupp získal ovace za telecí plec připravenou způsobem „sous vide“. 

Na pódiu se odehrály soutěže v přípravě palačinek, špízů a v otevírání 

ústřic. Běh Vrchní, prchni oslavil svůj jubilejní pátý ročník 

a tradičně završil letošní svátek gastronomie v Karlových Varech. 

Vydařená akce probíhala za podpory Města Karlovy Vary, agentury 

CzechTourism a společnosti MAKRO. 

Světová premiéra v Grandhotelu Pupp 

Pod vedením šéfdirigenta Martina Lebela byla provedena ve 

Slavnostním sále Grandhotelu Pupp světová premiéra dvanáctidílné 

rockové mše The Rock Mass. Na vystoupení se podílel 

Karlovarský symfonický orchestr, jazzový Karlovarský Repre Band 

a vokální sólisté z Londýna Kirsten Joy a Gaz Twist. Rocková mše 

je unikátní hudební projekt českého skladatele Daniela Kyzlinka 

a anglického textaře Johna de Jonga. 

Eine Weltpremiere im Grandhotel Pupp 

Unter der Leitung des Chefdirigenten Martin Lebel wurde im 

Festsaal vom Grandhotel Pupp die Weltpremiere der zwölfteiligen 

Rockmesse The Rock Mass aufgeführt. Auf dem Auftritt nahmen 

auch das Karlsbader Symphonieorchester, das Karlsbader Repre 

Band Jazzorchester und die Vokalsolisten aus London Kirsten Joy 

und Gaz Twist teil. Die Rockmesse ist ein einmaliges Musikprojekt 

des tschechischen Komponisten Daniel Kyzlink und des englischen 

Texters John de Jong. 

Das Food Festival Karlsbad 

Der erste Maisamstag gehörte erneut den besten Koch- und 

Barkeeperteams aus Karlsbad und der Umgebung. Den Besuchern 

des diesjährigen Food Festivals bereiteten Sie an die 5000 Portionen 

Spezialitäten vor. Das Grandhotel Pupp bekam Beifall für die Kalbsschulter, 

die auf die „Sous Vide“ Art vorbereitet wurde. Am Podium 

gab es einen Wettbewerb, in dem Pfannkuchen und Spieße vorbereitet 

wurden und in dem Austern geöffnet wurden. Der Kellnerlauf 

Vrchní, prchni feierte seinen fünften Jubiläumsjahrgang und beendete 

traditionell das diesjährige Gastronomiefest in Karlsbad. Die 

gelungene Veranstaltung verlief unter Unterstützung der Stadt 

Karlsbad, der Agentur CzechTourism und der Gesellschaft MAKRO. 

The Food Festival Karlovy Vary 

The best teams of cooks and barmen from Karlovy Vary and the region 

presented their skills again on the first Saturday in May. They 

prepared almost 5,000 portions of specialities for the visitors to this 

year´ s Food Festival. The Grandhotel Pupp received a huge ovation 

for its shoulder of veal cooked “souse vide”. Competitions in cooking 

pancakes, meat on skewers or opening of oysters took place on the 

stage. The Runaway Waiter race celebrated its fifth anniversary and 

crowned traditionally this year´s holiday of gastronomy in Karlovy 

Vary. The successful event was supported by the town of Karlovy 

Vary, the Czech Tourism Agency and the company MAKRO. 

A World Premiere in the Grandhotel Pupp 

A world premiere of the Rock Mass, which consists of twelve parts, 

was played under the baton of the principal conductor Martin 

Lebel in the Festive Hall of the Grandhotel Pupp. The Karlovy Vary 

Symphony Orchestra, the Karlovy Vary Repre Band and vocal soloists 

from London Kirsten Joy and Gaz Twist participated in the 

concert. The Rock Mass is a unique musical project of the Czech 

composer Daniel Kyzlink and the English lyricist John de Jong.

Velké společenské firemní setkání 

ve Slavnostním sále 

Slavnostní ples a galavečer významné logistické firmy HOPI s.r. byl 

pořádán k 20. výročí založení společnosti. Konal se ve Slavnostním 

sále a dalších prostorách Grandhotelu Pupp. František Piškanin, 

majitel a zakladatel firmy zde ocenil nejlepší pracovníky. Součástí 

programu byla slavnostní večeře, taneční a pěvecká vystoupení 

hvězd, raut a samozřejmě tanec. 

Ein großes gesellschaftliches 

Firmentreffen im Festsaal 

Zum 20. Gründungsjubiläum der bedeutenden logistischen Firma 

HOPI s.r.o. wurden ein Festball und ein Galaabend veranstaltet. Sie 

fanden im Festsaal und in den weiteren Räumlichkeiten des Grandhotels 

Pupp statt. František Piškanin, der Besitzer und Gründer der 

Gesellschaft würdigte hier die besten Angestellten. Am Programm 

waren ein festliches Abendessen, Tanz- und Musikauftritte der Stars 

und ein Buffet, natürlich wurde auch getanzt. 

Kasino v novém 

S novou sezónou začíná svou novou etapu také Pupp Casino Club 

ve stylově zrenovovaném prostoru Grandhotelu Pupp. Velkolepá 

hala s dominantním vitrážovým stropem je prodchnutá exkluzivní 

atmosférou filmu Casino Royale, kterou si jistě příznivci bondovské 

série nenechají ujít. A nejen oni. Společnost Czech Casinos, která 

kasino provozuje, Vás zve k návštěvě a přeje štěstí ve hře.

Mit der neuen Saison beginnt seinen neuen Zeitabschnitt auch der 

Pupp Casino Club, in einem stilvoll erneuerten Raum des Grandhotels 

Pupp. Die prächtige Halle mit einer dominanten Vitragendecke 

erinnert an die Atmosphäre des Filmes Casino Royale, die sich sicher 

die James Bond Fans nicht entgehen lassen. Und nicht nur sie. Die 

Gesellschaft Czech Casinos, die das Kasino betreibt, lädt Sie zu 

Besuch ein und wünscht Ihnen viel Glück im Spiel. 

A Big Social Firm Meeting in the Festive Hall 

A gala ball and a gala evening of the important logistic firm HOPI 

was organized on the occasion of the 20th foundation anniversary 

of the company. It was held in the Festive Hall and other rooms of 

the Grandhotel Pupp. František Piškanin, the owner and founder of 

the firm appreciated the best employees here. Parts of the programme 

were a gala dinner, dance and singing performances of stars, 

a banquet and, of course, dance. 

The Casino in a New Coat 

The Pupp Casino Club, too, is beginning a new spa season in a stylishly 

renovated room. The grand hall with an imposing stain-glass 

ceiling is filled with the exclusive atmosphere of the film Casino 

Royale, which the lovers of Bond films will surely not miss. And not 

only them. The company Czech Casinos, which runs the casino, 

would like to invite you to come too and wishes you good luck in 

your game.

Strom Grandhotelu Pupp 

„Postav dům, zasaď strom...“ V návaznosti na toto rčení a na završení 

výstavby nové budovy wellness centra Grandhotelu Pupp byl 

před hotelem na Mírové náměstí zasazen v pondělí 15. dubna 

10 metrů vysoký a 30 let „mladý“ javor Acer Platanoides Eurostar. 

Byl přivezen až z berlínského zahradnictví. Krásný strom je předzvěstí 

dalších úprav náměstí, na jehož konečnou podobu se můžete 

těšit při svém podzimním pobytu. 

Der Grandhotel Pupp Baum 

„Baue ein Haus, pflanze einen Baum...“ In Bezug auf diese 

Redewendung und als Krönung des Aufbaus von dem neuen 

Gebäude des Grandhotel Pupp Wellnesszentrums wurde vor dem 

Hotel am Montag, den 15. April ein 10 Meter hohe und 30 Jahre 

„junge“ Ahorn Acer Platanoides Eurostar gepflanzt. Er wurde bis 

aus einer Berliner Gärtnerei gebracht. Der schöne Baum ist ein 

Vorbote vom weiteren Umbau des Platzes (Mírové náměstí), auf 

dessen neue Gestaltung Sie sich während Ihres Herbstaufenthaltes 

freuen können. 

Děti v Grandhotelu Puppu? 

Ano, o novou generaci svých hostů pečuje tento slavný hotel. Na 

jaře hostil třídu „druháků“, vítězů soutěže o nejlepší výtvarné ztvárnění 

Grandhotelu Pupp. Odměnou jim bylo kompletní menu. 

Pod vedením třídní učitelky M. Pivkové, obchodní manažerky 

J. Markusové a šéfkuchaře R. Kotlána se jim dostalo poučení o základech 

stolování a společenské výchovy. 

Kinder im Grandhotel Pupp? 

Ja, dieses berühmte Hotel kümmert sich um die neue Generation 

seiner Gäste. Im Frühling bewirtete es eine Klasse „der Zweitklässler“, 

die Sieger im Wettbewerb um das schönste Bildwerk des 

Grandhotels Pupp. Als Belohnung bekamen sie ein komplettes 

Menü. Unter der Leitung der Klassenlehrerin M. Pivková, der 

Geschäftsmanagerin J. Markusová und dem Chefkoch R. Kotlán 

wurden sie über die Grundlagen der Tischkultur und der gesellschaftlichen 

Erziehung belehrt. 

The Tree of the Grandhotel Pupp 

“Build a house, plant a tree ...” Further to this saying and completing 

the construction of the new building of the wellness centre of the 

Grandhotel Pupp, a ten-metre-high and 30-year- “young” Acer 

Platanoides Eurostar tree was planted in front of the hotel in Mírové 

Square on Monday 15th April. It was brought from a garden centre 

in Berlin. The beautiful tree announces further improvements in the 

square. You can look forward to its final appearance in autumn. 

Children in the Grandhotel Pupp? 

Yes, this famous hotel looks after a new generation of its future 

guests. It played host to a class of second-formers, the winners of the 

competition for the best picture of the Grandhotel Pupp, in spring. 

They were rewarded with a complete menu. Led by their teacher 

M. Pivková, the sales manager J. Markusová and the chef 

R. Kotlán, they got information about banqueting and good manners.

Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová je generální ředitelkou Grandhotelu Pupp od 

r. 2006. Vystudovala VŠE v Praze. V letech 2001-2003 pracovala 

v Grand hotelu Pupp jako manažerka marketingu, v letech 2003-2006 

na pozici vedoucí obchodního oddělení. 

V roce 2004 získala ocenění Asociace hotelů a restaurací ČR jako 

Mladý manažer roku, v roce 2012 jako hoteliér roku. V dubnu 

2013 byla Českou manažerskou asociací zvolena nejlepším manažerem 

Odvětví cestovní ruch za rok 2012. Je náruživou sportovkyní, 

má ráda běh, golf, tenis, více než sedm let se trenérsky věnuje 

spinningu. Je zakladatelkou Carlsbad Convention Bureau (CCB), 

které se snaží propagovat karlovarský region také v oblasti kongresové 

turistiky. Je předsedkyní krajské sekce AHR. V roce 2009 založila 

Karlovarský Food Festival, který je každoročně součástí zahájení 

lázeňské sezóny. 

Jak se Vám žije v Karlových Varech? 

Vyrostla jsem v nedalekém v Chodově, střední školu navštěvovala 

právě zde ve Varech, prožila tu první lásky a v současné době bydlíme 

s manželem v Otovicích. Zůstávám tedy prozatím stále v těsné 

blízkosti města, které mám moc ráda. Je pravda, že podmínky pro 

život jsou tu poněkud ztížené nedostatkem pracovních míst, ale jinak 

je město krásné. Odevšad je kousek do přírody a to mě moc těší. 

Máte ve městě své oblíbené místo? 

Tím místem je pro mě Grandhotel Pupp. Má zvláštní auru, všude tu dýchá 

obrovský kus historie. Díky své práci jsem neustále v kontaktu s mnoha 

lidmi, takže mám pocit, že jsem stále uprostřed obrovského ruchu, zajímavého 

dění. Když chci být sama, ráda zajdu lesní procházkou na vyhlídku 

Karla IV., nebo se vydám na kole přes Tuhnice do Svatošských skal. 

Jaký máte vztah ke Grandhotelu Pupp? 

Grandhotel Pupp je pro mě srdeční záležitostí. Jsem s Puppem 

propojena pupeční šňůrou, takže je to spojení velmi silné a na celý 

život. V této chvíli je vše samozřejmě umocněno pozicí, kterou zde 

zastávám. Mám moc ráda prostředí, které má tak zvláštní atmosféru. 

Těžce se mluví o něčem, čeho jsem vlastně součástí. Snažím se 

ze všech sil, abychom zanechali i dalším generacím maximum toho, 

co nám bylo předáno z minulosti.

DES GRANDHOTELS PUPP 

Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová ist die Generaldirektorin vom Grandhotel 

Pupp seit dem Jahre 2006. Sie absolvierte die Ökonomische 

Hochschule in Prag. In den Jahren 2001-2003 war sie im Grandhotel 

Pupp als Marketing Managerin angestellt und in den Jahren 2003- 

2006 als Chefin der Geschäfts abteilung. Im Jahre 2004 erhielt sie 

den Preis der Assoziation der Hotels und Restaurants der Tschechischen 

Republik für den Jungen Manager des Jahres, im Jahre

2012 für den Hotelier des Jahres. Im April 2013 wurde sie von der 

Tschechischen Managerassoziation zum besten Manager im 

Bereich des Fremdenverkehrs für das Jahr 2012 gewählt. Sie ist eine 

leidenschaftliche Sportlerin, sie mag Laufen, Golf und Tennis. 

Mehr als sieben Jahre lang widmet sie sich als Trainerin dem 

Spinning. Sie gründete das Carlsbad Convention Bureau (CCB), 

das sich bemüht, für die Karlsbader Region auch im Bereich des 

Kongresstourismus zu werben. Sie ist die Vorsitzende der 

Kreisabteilung der AHR. Im Jahre 2009 gründete sie das Karlsbader 

Food Festival, das jedes Jahr zur Kursaisoneröffnung stattfindet. 

Wie lebt es sich Ihnen in Karlsbad? 

Ich wuchs in der nicht weit entfernten Stadt Chodov auf, die 

Fachschule besuchte ich hier in Karlsbad, erlebte hier die ersten 

Lieben und zurzeit wohne ich mit meinem Ehemann in Otovice. 

Ich bleibe also vorerst immer in der unmittelbaren Nähe der Stadt, 

die ich sehr mag. Es stimmt, dass die Lebensbedingungen hier 

gewissermaßen durch mangelnde Arbeitsplätze erschwert sind, 

aber sonst ist die Stadt schön. Überallher ist es nicht weit in die 

Natur, was mich freut. 

Haben Sie in der Stadt Ihren Lieblingsort? 

Dieser Ort ist für mich das Grandhotel Pupp. Es hat eine besondere 

Aura, überall spürt man die Geschichte. Dank meiner Arbeit bin 

ich stets im Kontakt mit vielen Leuten, also habe ich das Gefühl, 

dass ich immer inmitten riesigen Treibens und interessanten 

Geschehens bin. Wenn ich alleine sein möchte, spaziere ich durch 

den Wald zur Aussicht Karl IV., oder ich fahre mit dem Rad über 

Tuhnice zu Svatošské skály (Hans Heilig Felsen). 

Welche Beziehung haben Sie zum Grandhotel Pupp? 

Das Grandhotel Pupp ist für mich eine Herzensangelegenheit. Ich 

bin mit dem Pupp durch die Nabelschnur verbunden, also ist es 

eine sehr starke Verbindung und für das ganze Leben. In dieser Zeit 

ist alles natürlich durch die Position, die ich hier vertrete, verstärkt. 

Ich mag sehr das Milieu, das so besondere Atmosphäre hat. Man 

spricht schwer davon, wessen Bestandteil man eigentlich ist. Ich 

bemühe mich aus Leibeskräften, dass man auch den weiteren 

Generationen das Maximum davon hinterlässt, was uns aus der 

Vergangenheit übergeben wurde. 

Was würden Sie unseren Lesern ausrichten? 

Jedenfalls sollten Sie unser Hotel und das in diesem Jahr neu errichtete 

Wellness und Spa besuchen. Die einmalige Verbindung des 

neuen modernen Bassins mit Saunas mit dem historischen 

Hotelgebäude ist kaum woanders zu sehen. Drei verbindende 

Tunnels, besondere Glasmalerei, wunderschöne Fliesen, das alles

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE GENERAL MANAGER 

OF THE GRANDHOTEL PUPP 

Andrea Pfeffer-Ferklová has been the general manager of the 

Grandhotel Pupp since the year 2006. She graduated from the 

University of Economics in Prague. Then she worked as a marketing 

manager in the Grandhotel Pupp from 2001 to 2003 and later, between 

2003 and 2006, as the head of the business department. She received 

a Young Manager of the Year award from the Association of Hotels and 

Restaurants of the C.R. in 2004 and became the hotelier of the year in 

2012. The Czech Management Association declared her the best manager 

in the field of tourism in 2012. She is a keen sportswoman and 

likes running, golf and tennis and has been training spinning for more 

than seven years. She is the founder of the Carlsbad Convention 

Bureau (CCB), which is trying to publicize the Karlovy Vary region in 

the field of congress tourism. She is the president of the regional section 

of the AHR. In 2009 she founded the Karlovy Vary Food Festival which 

is a part of the opening of the spa season every year. 

How do you like living in Karlovy Vary? 

I grew up in nearby Chodov and attended a secondary school just 

here, in Karlovy Vary, I had my first loves here and at present I live 

in Otovice together with my husband. It means that I keep staying 

close to the town which I like a lot. It is true that living conditions 

are a bit complicated here owing to the lack of working possibilities 

but otherwise the town is beautiful. It is a short way to nature from 

everywhere and I enjoy it a lot. 

Do you have your favourite places in the town? 

My favourite place is the Grandhotel Pupp. It has a special aura and 

you can feel history everywhere. I am always in touch with lots of 

people thanks to my work and it keeps me busy and in the middle 

of things. When I want to be alone, I go for a walk through a wood 

to Charles IV Lookout or I ride a bike via Tuhnice to the Svatošské 

skály Rocks. 

How would you describe your relationship to the Grandhotel Pupp? 

The Grandhotel Pupp is a matter of heart for me. I am connected 

to it by an umbilical cord, which means the connection is very 

strong and forever. Of course, everything is intensified by the post 

which I am holding now. I really love the place with such a specific 

atmosphere. It is difficult to speak about what I am actually a part 

of. I am trying hard to leave the next generations as much as possible 

of what was handed over to us in the past. 

What message would you like to send to our readers? 

They should definitely visit our hotel and the new Wellness and Spa 

Department which was built this year. They cannot often see such 

a unique combination of the new modern swimming pool with saunas 

and the historical building of the hotel. Three connecting tunnels, 

special stain-glass windows and beautiful facing create an impression 

of luxury and uniqueness. If someone feels like spending 

romantic whiles in two, he must try our new Royal Spa Suite which 

offers a private sauna or a whirlpool bath. In addition to it, there is 

an offer of ayurveda massages carried out by a masseur directly from 

Sri Lanka – it is a perfect opportunity to have a rest and relax.

Josef a Johan 

Johann Georg Pupp, Otec zakladatel, snil o úspěchu, kterým by on, 

přivandrovalec, ohromil úctyhodné měšťany, o hotelu tak velikém, 

že by se tam vešel celý Valdštejnův doprovod. Jemu samotnému už 

na takový úkol nezbývaly síly. Navíc mu zemřela Franzisca, kterou 

hluboce miloval. Oženil se pak ještě jednou, v předčasném podzimu 

svého vyčerpávajícího života. Ale děti mu dala jen Franzisca: 

dva syny, Josefa a Johanna. 

Byl čas válek s Napoleonem a Johann Georg hleděl do budoucnosti 

s obavami. Přesto věřil, že synové uskuteční, co on sám nestačil 

vykonat, koupit Saský sál, a také Boží oko. První z Puppů, Johann 

Georg, zemřel roku 1810 ve věku pouhých dvaapadesáti let. 

Revoluce ve Francii Karlovarským pomohla: pud sebezáchovy velel 

francouzské šlechtě uchýlit se co nejdál od Paříže. Tak např. příbuzní 

nešťastného Ludvíka XVI. objevili Karlovy Vary, přijel 

i Metternich, císařská rodina, vítězové nad Napoleonem i Na poleonova 

choť, zázračnou vodu zde v těch časech srkali slavní umělci, 

také Chopin, Beethoven a samozřejmě Johann Wolfgang Goethe, 

který zde strávil třináct sezón. Návštěvníků přibývá. Jaká příležitost 

pro druhou generaci Puppů! Využijí ji? Kdyby byl Johann Georg 

živ, musel by se v tom čase od činů svých synů s bolestí odvrátit. 

Nebo aspoň od toho staršího, Josefa. Josefovi, vyučenému cukráři, 

připadl Český sál i Puppovy aleje. Otcovo dílo nerozmnožil, ba 

naopak. Oženil se s řeznickou dcerkou Barborou Urbanovou z domu 

U Tří jehňátek a bez jediného potomka zemřel. Byl tu sice ještě 

bratr Johann. Jako mladší zdědil jakási dvě obchodní skladiště 

a dřevěnou kůlnu u Českého sálu. Naštěstí byl i dědicem rodinného 

domu Meloun. Josef bez ohledu na otcovu závěť dal před smrtí 

přepsat majetek na svou choť Barboru, s níž se Johann pak léta 

soudil, marně. Zklamaný Johann si otevřel v Melounu kavárnu 

a zanevřel na svět. Ale ani Barbora se dlouho z vítězství neradovala, 

protože neměla k podnikání talent, zkrachovala a rozprodala Český 

sál třem vlastníkům. Vlastníci ponechali Barboře sál v nájmu, ta 

však nedokázala využít této šance, pro ni poslední. V Českém sále 

se pak střídala řada nájemců, zpravidla cizích. Johann se znovu 

pokusil o získání sálu soudní cestou, znovu byl poražen. Zdálo se, 

že sen Johanna Georga, Otce zakladatele, o velikém hotelu pod 

žezlem Puppů je v troskách. Skutečnost, že vše dopadlo jinak, vypadá 

jako zázrak... 

Die zweite Generation – JOSEF und JOHANN 

Johann Georg Pupp, der Gründungsvater, träumt vom Erfolg, mit dem 

er, der Zuwanderer, die Augen allen ehrwürdigen Bürgern aus wischen 

würde. Von einem Hotel so groß, daß in ihm das ganze Gefolge 

Wallensteins hinein gehen würde. Ihm selbst blieben für so eine 

Aufgabe keine Kräfte mehr übrig. Und es starb ihm Franzisca, die er 

aufs tiefste liebte. Er heiratete dann noch einmal, im vorzeitigen 

Herbst seines aufreibenden Lebens. Aber Kinder schenkte ihm nur 

Franzisca: zwei Söhne, Josef und Johann. Es war Kriegszeit mit Napoleon 

und Johann Georg blickte in die Zukunft mit Bedenken. Trotzdem 

glaubte er, daß die Söhne das verwirklichen, was er selbst nicht 

vollbrachte. Daß es ihnen gelingen wird den Sächsischen Saal zu kaufen 

und auch das Auge Gottes. Der erste der Pupps, Johann Georg, 

starb im Jahre 1810 in einem Alter von nur zweiundfünfzig Jahren. 

Die Revolution in Frankreich half den Karlsbadern: der Selbster haltungstrieb 

befahl dem französischen Adel sich am weitesten von Paris 

abzuwenden. So entdeckten die Verwandten des unglücklichen 

Ludwigs XVI. Karlsbad. Es kam auch Metternich an, die kaiserliche 

Familie, Sieger über Napoleon auch Napoleons Gattin, das Wunderwasser 

schlurften hier in diesen Zeiten berühmte Künstler, auch 

Chopin, Beethoven und selbstverständlich Johann Wolfgang Goethe, 

der hier dreizehn Saisons verbrachte. Besucher nehmen zu. Welche 

Gelegenheit für die zweite Generation der Pupps! Nützen sie sie aus?

Saga of the Pupp Family 

Wenn Johann Georg leben würde, müßte er sich in jener Zeit von den 

Taten seiner Söhne mit Schmerz abwenden. Oder wenigstens von dem 

älteren, Josef. Josef, dem gelernten Zuckerbäcker fiel der Böhmische 

Saal sowie die Pupp'schen Alleen zu. Er erweiterte Vaters Werk um 

keinen Finger breit. Er heiratete die Fleischerstochter Barbara Urban 

aus dem Hause Zu den drei Lämmchen und ohne jeden Nachkommen 

starb er. Es war hier noch der Bruder Johann. Als Jüngerer erbte er 

irgendwelche zwei Geschäftslager und einen hölzernen Schuppen 

beim Böhmischen Saal. Zum Glück war er auch Erbe des Familienhauses 

Melone. Im Testament von Johann Georg stand nämlich, daß 

wenn der ältere Bruder ohne Nachkommen stirbt, fällt der Saal mit 

dem Alleen dem jüngeren Bruder zu. Johann Georg wollte so sein 

Vermögen für seine Familie erhalten. Aber Josef machte auch dies 

zunichte: er ließ er seinem Tod den Besitz auf seine Gattin Barbara 

umschreiben. Der Bruder Johann prozessierte dann Jahre lang, vergebens. 

Der enttäuschte Johann öffnete in der Melone ein Kaffeehaus 

und entsagte sich der Welt. Aber nicht einmal die Barbara freute sich 

lange von dem Sieg. Sie machte Bankrott und verkaufte den 

Böhmischen Saal an drei Eigentümer. Die Eigentümer überließen der 

Barbara den Saal gemietet, die Barbara schaffte es nicht einmal diese 

Chance sich zu erhalten, für sie die letzte. Im Böhmischen Saal wechselten 

dann eine Reihe von Mietern, zumeist Fremde, bis es dem 

Johann in dem unweiten Kaffeehaus das Herz entreißen konnte. 

Nochmals versuchte er einen gerichtlichen Weg, erneut wurde er 

geschlagen. Es schien schon, daß der Traum vom Johann Georg vom 

großen Hotel unter dem Zepter der Pupps in den Trümmern liegt. Die 

Tatsache, daß alles anders ausfiel, sieht wie ein Wunder aus... 

The SECOND Generation – JOSEF and JOHANN 

Johann Georg Pupp, the founding father, was dreaming about a success 

by means of which he – a stranger – would have astonished 

respectable burghers of Karlovy Vary. About a hotel so big that all 

Wallenstein’s company could have stayed there overnight. He himself 

was not strong enough for such a task any more. And Franzisca, 

who he deeply loved, died. He married again in the early autumn of 

his exhausting life. But it was only Franzisca that gave him children: 

two sons, Josef and Johann. It was the time of the Napoleonic Wars 

and Johann was worried about the future. In spite of that he believed

that his sons would realize what he himself had not managed to do. 

That they would succeed in buying the Saxon Hall and, too, the 

God’s Eye House. The first of the Pupp family, Johann Georg, died 

at 1810 at the age of only fifty–two years. 

The French Revolution helped Karlovy Vary: the instinct of self– 

preservation made the French nobility travel as far as possible from 

Paris. That was why the relatives of unlucky Louis XVI “discovered” 

Karlovy Vary. They were followed by Metternich, the emperor’s 

family, the winners over Napoleon as well as Napoleon’s wife. 

Famous artists, such as Chopin, Beethoven and, of course, Johann 

Wolfgang Goethe, who spent 13 spa seasons here, sipped “miraculous 

water” of Karlovy Vary. In those times, the number of visitors 

was increasing. What an opportunity for the second generation of 

the Pupps! Did they take it? 

If Johann George had been alive, he might have turned away from 

his sons with pain. Or, at least, from the elder one, Josef. Josef, who 

was a confectioner, became the owner of the Bohemian Hall and the 

Pupp Alleys. He did not go in his father’s footsteps at all. He married 

a butcher’s daughter Barbora Urbanová from the Three Lambs 

House and died without having a single descendant. But there was 

his brother Johann here. He was younger and so he inherited two 

storehouses and wooden sheds standing near the Bohemian Hall. 

Fortunately, he inherited the Melon House. It was written in Johann 

Georg’s testament that the younger brother would become the 

owner of the Hall and the Alleys in case the older brother would die 

without having children. In this way, Johann Georg wanted to keep 

the property for his family. But Josef frustrated even these plans: he 

assigned whole property to his wife Barbora irrespective of his father’s 

wish. His brother Johann took Barbora to court. The trial 

lasted for years and Johann lost it. Disappointed Johann opened 

a café in the Melon House and started to hate the whole world. But 

Barbora went soon bankrupt and sold the Bohemian Hall to three 

people. The new owners let the hall out to Barbora, but she was not 

able to take the chance, the last one for her. The Bohemian Hall was 

later let to a number of various people. Johann went to court again 

– and lost for the second time. Johann Georg’s dream about a big 

hotel under the Pupp’s sceptre seemed to be in ruins. The fact that 

everything turned out different seems to be a miracle...

A Thousand Tastes of Whisky 

Doba zrání 

Jakákoli skotská whisky musí zrát v sudech nejméně tři roky, palírny 

ji však většinou ponechávají zrát podstatně déle. Optimální doba 

zrání je různá pro různé druhy whisky i pro různé oblasti, udává 

se osm až jedenadvacet let a jen výjimečně výše. Při zrání delším 

než pětadvacet let přijímá nápoj příliš aroma ze dřeva sudů, takže 

kvalita whisky, až na výjimky, se již nijak výrazně nezvyšuje. Starší 

whisky jsou jistou zvláštností, např. u příležitosti narozenin královny 

Alžběty byla plněna whisky šedesátiletá. Některé další byly záměrně 

plněny jako náležitě drahé kuriozity. Při delší době zrání 

musíme počítat i s tím, že ročně se odpaří dvě i více procent náplně 

sudu. Odpařené množství je nazýváno andělská daň (angel share). 

Bylo spočítáno, že ročně se takto odpaří miliony gallonů, proto jsou 

všichni Skoti náležitě hrdí na kvalitu svého lahodně vonícího 

ovzduší, které je prý silně prosyceno odpařenou whisky. Na rozdíl 

od vína zraje whisky pouze v sudech, nikoli v lahvích. Jakmile se 

whisky stočí do lahví, proces zrání se zastaví. 

Existují dva systémy uložení sudů. Buď jsou skladovány v nižších 

kamenných budovách, kde jsou uloženy ve dvou až třech řadách 

nad sebou. Výhodou je, že všude je stejné mikroklima. Tento způsob 

se používá především ve Skotsku. Druhý způsob, který se používá 

zejména v USA, je ukládání do plechových policových skladů, 

kde je možno sudy naskládat do dvaceti i více vrstev nad sebou. 

Aby se neměnila chuť, je u základních produktů přísně zachováván 

tradiční postup, např. whisky Macallan výhradně zraje v sudech po 

sherry oloroso. Jiné druhy pak zrají po sherry fino, amontillado, 

manzanilla, amoroso, Jerez, Valdespino, palo cortado, Pedro 

Ximenez atp. Whisky Glenmorangie zase zraje téměř výhradně 

v sudech po bourbonu. Některé palírny používají jen sudy již jednou 

použité (refill, second fill). 

Sudy se totiž ještě dále rozdělují na poprvé použité a ty jsou nazývány 

first fill cask nebo fresh a opakovaně použité s označením second 

fill nebo refill cask, při čemž platí pravidlo třikrát a dost. Pokud jsou 

již vícekrát použité, nechávají se pro dozrávání obilné (grain), případně 

i míchaných. I po posledním použití však nacházejí velmi 

praktické upotřebení – na hoblinách z jejich prken se udí proslulí 

skotští pstruzi nebo jsou z nich stylové truhlíky na květiny. 

Dnes je velmi často prezentováno na etiketách číslo sudu, v jakém 

whisky zrála či dozrávala i kolik lahví ze sudu bylo naplněno. Mezi 

nejčastěji používaná označení patří whisky hog, sherry butt, bourbon 

barrel, madeira cask, oloroso cask, fresh sherry hogshead, port 

pipe, brandy cask, wine barrel, rum puncheon, American white 

Oak a další přízviska, jako amontillado, claret, fresh rum Demerara, 

cognac, malaga, sherry amoroso, fino sherry, sherry Jerez, 

Valdespino sherry, sherry refill, sherry palo cortado atp. 

Hovořili jsme o dozrávání a tím dojdeme i k pojmu doublewood či 

double matured což znamená, že whisky zraje převážnou dobu 

v jedněch sudech (např. po bourbonu), na závěr dozrává půl roku 

až tři roky v jiných (např. po sherry). V poslední době některé 

z palíren takto experimentují se sudy od vína, rumu atp.

Die Reifezeit 

Jeder schottische Whisky muss in den Fässern mindestens drei 

Jahre reifen, die Brennereien lassen ihn meistens wesentlich länger 

reifen. Die optimale Reifezeit ist für verschiedene Whiskysorten 

sowie für verschiedene Gebiete anders, man gibt acht bis einundzwanzig 

Jahre, nur ausnahmsweise höher an. Beim Reifen, das 

länger als fünfundzwanzig Jahre dauert, übernimmt das Getränk 

zu viel Aroma aus dem Holz der Fässer, so erhöht sich die 

Whiskyqualität, bis auf Ausnahmen, nicht mehr wesentlich. Ältere 

Whiskys sind eine gewisse Besonderheit, z. B. anlässlich des 

Geburtstages der Königin Elisabeth wurde ein sechzigjähriger 

Whisky gefüllt. Manche weitere wurden absichtlich als gehörig 

teure Kuriositäten gefüllt. Bei längerer Reifezeit muss man auch 

damit rechnen, dass jedes Jahr zwei oder auch sogar mehr Prozent 

vom Inhalt des Fasses verdunsten. Die verdunstete Menge wird als 

der Engelsanteil (angel share) bezeichnet. Es wurde berechnet, dass 

so alljährlich Millionen Gallone verdunsten. Deshalb sind alle 

Schotten auf die Qualität ihres angenehm riechenden Klimas 

gehörig stolz. Es soll stark vom verdunsteten Whisky gesättigt sein. 

Im Gegensatz zum Wein reift der Whisky nur in den Fässern, nicht 

in den Flaschen. Sobald der Whisky in die Flaschen gefüllt wird, 

wird der Reifeprozess abgeschlossen. 

Es gibt zwei Systeme der Fasslagerung. Beim Ersten werden die 

Fässer in niedrigeren steinernen Gebäuden gelagert, wo sie in zwei 

bis drei Reihen übereinander gelagert werden. Der Vorteil ist, dass 

überall das gleiche Mikroklima ist. Auf diese Art und Weise wird 

vor allem in Schottland gelagert. Beim Zweiten, das vor allem in 

den USA benutzt wird, werden die Fässer in den Lagern mit 

Blechregalen deponiert, wo man die Fässer in zwanzig und mehr 

Schichten übereinander stapeln kann. 

Damit sich der Geschmack nicht verändert, wird bei den elementaren 

Produkten streng der traditionelle Vorgang eingehalten, z. B. 

der Whisky Macallan reift ausschließlich in den Fässern nach 

Sherry Oloroso. Andere Sorten reifen dann nach Sherry Fino, 

Amontillado, Manzanilla, Amoroso, Jerez, Valdespino, Palo 

Cortado, Pedro Ximenez u. ä. Der Whisky Glenmorangie reift 

hinwiederum fast ausschließlich in Fässern nach dem Bourbon. 

Manche Brennereien verwenden nur Fässer, die bereits einmal benutzt 

wurden (refill, second fill). 

Die Fässer teilt man nämlich weiter noch auf die zum ersten Mal 

benutzte, die werden first fill cask oder fresh genannt und die 

mehr mals benutzte mit der Bezeichnung second fill oder refill cask, 

wobei die Regel gilt - dreimal und genug. Falls sie bereits mehrmals 

benutzt wurden, lässt man sie für die Nachreifung vom Getreidewhisky 

(grain), beziehungsweise auch für die von den gemischten 

Whiskys. Allerdings auch nach der letzten Nutzung finden sie eine 

sehr praktische Anwendung – auf den Sägespänen der Fassbretter 

räuchert man die berühmten schottischen Forellen, die Fässer dienen 

ebenso als stilvolle Blumentöpfe. 

Heute präsentiert man sehr oft auf den Etiketten die Fassnummer, 

in welchem Fass der Whisky reifte oder nachreifte, ebenso wie viel 

Flaschen aus dem Fass gefüllt wurden. Zu den meist benutzten 

Bezeichnungen gehören whisky hog, sherry butt, bourbon barrel, 

madeira cask, oloroso cask, fresh sherry hogshead, port pipe, brandy 

cask, wine barrel, rum puncheon, American white oak und 

weitere Beinamen, wie amontillado, claret, fresh rum Demerara, 

cognac, malaga, sherry amoroso, fino sherry, sherry Jerez, 

Valdespino sherry, sherry refill, sherry palo cortado u. ä. 

Wir sprachen über die Nachreifung und damit kommt man auch 

zum Begriff doublewood oder double matured, was bedeutet, dass 

der Whisky die meiste Zeit in den gleichen Fässern (z. B. nach 

Bourbon) reift, zum Schluss reift er ein halbes Jahr bis zu drei 

Jahren in anderen (z. B. nach Sherry). In der letzten Zeit experimentieren 

so manche Brennereien mit Fässern nach Wein, Rum u. ä.

Maturation of whisky 

All Scotch whisky has to mature in casks for at least three years, 

however distilleries usually let it mature for a longer time. The optimal 

maturing time is different depending on different sorts of 

whisky and different areas. It usually ranges from eight up to twenty-one 

years and only exceptionally longer. If the maturation process 

is longer than twenty-five years, the beverage takes over too 

much favour from the wood of the casks and the quality of whisky, 

with some exceptions, does not increase any more. Older whiskies 

are a sort of speciality, e.g. sixty-year-old whisky was bottled on the 

occasion of Queen Elizabeth´s birthday. Some other whiskies were 

intentionally bottled as appropriately expensive rarities. If the maturation 

time is longer, you have to take into consideration that two 

or even more per cent of the content of the cask evaporate every 

year. The evaporated amount is called the angel share. It is counted 

that millions of gallons evaporate in this way every year and that is 

why all Scots are properly proud of the quality of their deliciously 

smelling air which is said to ve saturated with evaporated whisky. 

Unlike wine, whisky ages only in casks, not in bottles. As soon as 

whisky is bottled, the maturation process stops. 

There are two systems of storing the casks. They are either stored 

in two or three layers in low stone buildings. The advantage is that 

there is the same microclimate everywhere. This way of storing is 

used first of all in Scotland. Or they are stored is special storehouses 

with tin shelves where they can be kept in twenty or even more 

layers. The other way is used especially in the U.S.A. 

So that the taste may not change, a traditional production process 

is strictly followed. E.g. Macallan whisky ages exclusively in the 

casks after sherry oloroso. Other sorts mature after sherry fino, 

amontillado, manzanilla, amoroso, Jerez, Valdespino, palo cortado, 

Pedro Ximenez etc. Whisky Glenmorangie ages almost exclusively 

in casks after bourbon. Some distilleries use only casks which have 

already been used once (refill, second fill). 

Casks are divided into two groups according to how often they 

have been used. Those which are used for the first time are called 

first fill casks or fresh casks while those used repeatedly are called 

second fill casks or refill casks and a three times is enough rule is 

obeyed. After they have been used more times, they are used for 

aging of grain whisky or mixed whisky. However, they find a very 

practical utilization even after the last use – shavings from the casks 

are used for smoking world-famous Scottish salmons or they are 

changed into stylish flower boxes. 

Today the labels are often provided with the number of the cask in 

which whisky aged or matured and also with the number of bottles 

which were drawn from the cask. Names which are used most frequently 

are whisky hog, sherry butt, bourbon barrel, Madeira cask, 

oloroso cask, fresh sherry hogshead, port pipe, brandy cask, wine 

barrel, rum puncheon, American white oak and others, such as 

amontillado, claret, fresh rum Demerara, cognac, Malaga, sherry 

amoroso, fino sherry, sherry Jerez, Valdespino sherry, sherry refill, 

sherry palo cortado etc. 

We have been talking about aging which leads us to the term doublewood 

or double matured. It means that whisky ages in one sort 

of cask (e.g. after bourbon) for a considerable part of the aging time 

and then in other casks (e.g. after sherry) for a time ranging from 

half a year up to three years. Recently some distilleries have been 

trying experiments with barrels after wine, rum etc.

Echoes of Famous Visits 

Císař 

František Josef I. 

Alfou a omegou dějin Puppu jsou jeho četní slavní hosté. Ti šíří dobrou 

pověst hotelu již tři sta let. Od sklonku 19. století byli v hotelu 

ubytováni např. četní příslušníci rodiny Habsburků, egyptský král 

Fuad, perský šáh Musaffer-eddin, turecký paša Khedive Abba Hilmi, 

anglický král Edward VII., španělský král Alfons XIII., srbští králové 

Milan a Alexandr, královna Maria Pia Portugalská a četné další veličiny 

politiky, podnikání, umění a vědy. A také císař František Josef I. 

Karlovarští svého císaře velmi uctívali. 17. srpna 1871 večer na počest 

jeho narozenin se v lese za Grandhotelem Pupp na vyhlídce 

Krále Friedricha Wilhelma poprvé rozsvítil velký rakouský císařský 

orel. Od onoho dne se plošině s vyhlídkou začalo přezdívat 

Iluminační výšina. Při slavnostních příležitostech se tu rozsvěcovala 

světla svíček na různých důmyslných konstrukcích. 

Dne 17. srpna 1904 přijel císař do Karlových Varů na oficiální jednodenní 

návštěvu. Přicestoval dvorním vlakem z Mariánských 

Lázní, kde prodléval u rodiny Metternichů v Kynžvartu. Karlovarští 

připravili monarchovi velkolepé přivítání: ulice lemovaly špalíry 

svátečně oblečených lidí a celé město bylo vyzdobeno slavobranami. 

Císař si prohlédl některé objekty, např. Vojenský lázeňský ústav, 

městské divadlo a Císařské lázně. Majitelé Grandhotelu Pupp 

Heinrich Pupp junior, Karl Pupp a Julius Pupp junior jej u fontány 

před svým hotelem osobně uvítali a darovali mu velikou kytici. 

V Puppu byl na počest nejurozenějšího hosta ve velkém jídelním 

sále připraven slavnostní oběd pro dvě stě osob. Vyzdobenému sálu 

dominovala císařova busta na pozadí doplněná velkým rakouským 

znakem. Po obědě si císař odpočinul v nejluxusnějším hotelovém 

apartmá a k večeru téhož dne vlakem zase odcestoval. 

Vzpomínkou na pobyt císaře v Grandhotelu Pupp je speciální koupelna, 

která je součástí apartmá, kde si panovník po dlouhé cestě 

tehdy odpočinul, aby pak pokračoval ve své spanilé jízdě. Chcete-li

KAISER Franz JOSEF I. 

Alpha und Omega der Geschichte von Pupp sind seine zahlreichen 

berühmten Gäste. Diese verbreiten den guten Hotelnamen bereits 

300 Jahre. Seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wohnten hier z. B. zahlreiche 

Angehörige der Familie Habsburg, der ägyptische König 

Fuad, der persische Schah Musaffer-eddin, der türkische Pascha 

Khedive Abba Hilmi, der englische König Edward VII., der spanische 

König Alfons XIII., die serbischen Könige Milan und 

Alexander, die Königin Maria Pia von Portugal und weitere Größen 

der Politik, des Handels, der Kunst und der Wissenschaft. Und 

Kaiser Franz Josef I. auch. 

Die Karlsbader verehrten ihren Kaiser sehr. Am Abend, den 

17. August 1871, leuchtete im Wald hinter dem Grandhotel Pupp, 

auf der König Friedrich Wilhelm Aussicht, anlässlich des Geburtstags 

von Kaiser, zum ersten Mal, ein großer österreichischer Adler auf. 

Seit jenem Tag nannte man diese Aussicht, die Illuminationshöhe. 

Bei festlichen Gelegenheiten zündete man hier Lichter an verschiedenen 

hoch entwickelten Konstruktionen an. 

Am 17. August 1904 kam zu einem offiziellen eintägigen Besuch der 

österreichische Kaiser nach Karlsbad. Er reiste mit dem höfischen 

Zug aus Marienbad an, wo er bei der Familie Metternich weilte. Die 

ruhte sich gerade teils in Marienbad, teils auf ihrem unweiten 

Schloss Königswart (Kynžvart) aus. Die Karlsbader bereiteten dem 

Monarchen einen großartigen Empfang vor. Die Straßen säumten 

festlich gekleidete Menschenmengen und die ganze Stadt wurde mit 

Triumphbogen geschmückt. Der Kaiser besichtigte einige 

Einrichtungen, z. B. die Militärkuranstalt, das Stadttheater und das 

Kaiserbad. Die Eigentümer von Grandhotel Pupp, Heinrich Pupp 

Junior, Karl Pupp und Julius Pupp Junior begrüßten ihn persönlich 

am Springbrunnen vor ihrem Hotel und schenkten ihm einen 

großen Blumenstrauß. Im Grandhotel Pupp wurde zu Ehren des

höchsten Gastes im großen Speisesaal ein festliches Mittagessen für 

200 Personen vorbereitet. Dem geschmückten Saal dominierte eine 

Büste des Kaisers, ergänzt mit einem großen österreichischen 

Wappen im Hintergrund. Nach dem Mittagessen ruhte sich der 

Kaiser in dem luxuriösesten Hotelappartement aus und gegen 

Abend reiste er mit dem Zug ab. 

Eine Erinnerung an den kaiserlichen Aufenthalt im Grandhotel 

Pupp ist ein besonderes Badezimmer, das im Appartement zu finden 

ist, wo sich der Herrscher nach einer langen Reise damals ausruhte, 

um dann seine Huldigungsfahrt fortzusetzen. Falls Sie in die 

Vergangenheit zurückkehren mögen, ja sich sogar als der Kaiser zu 

fühlen wünschen, planen Sie sicher Ihren Aufenthalt gerade in unser

The alpha and omega of the history of the Pupp are its numerous 

renowned guests who have promoted the dazzling reputation of the 

hotel for 300 years. Since the late 19th century, the hotel accommodated 

numerous members of the Habsburg family and an impressive 

list of dignitaries, celebrities and royalty. King Edward VII of Great 

Britain, King Fuad of Egypt, Shah Musaffer eddin of Persia, Turkish 

Abbas Hilmi Pasha and Khedive of Egypt, King Alphons XIII of 

Spain, Serbian kings Milan and Alexander, Queen Maria Pia of 

Portugal, and many other personages of politics, business, art, entertainment 

and science have all called the Grandhotel Pupp home at 

one time or another. The Emperor Franz Josef I, too. 

Inhabitants of Karlovy Vary respected their emperor a lot. On the 

evening of 17 August 1871, the Austrian imperial eagle was illuminated 

for the first time in the woods behind the Pupp Hall at the 

Lookout of King Friedrich Wilhelm on the occasion of the birthday 

of Emperor Franz Josef I. From that day, the lookout platform has 

been called the Illumination Heights. At various occasions, lights 

were lit using sophisticated structures. 

On 17 August 1904, Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria came to 

Carlsbad on an official visit. He arrived aboard his court train from 

Marienbad where he was the guest of the Metternich family. The 

people of Carlsbad prepared an imposing welcome for the monarch. 

The streets were lined with crowds of people dressed in their finest 

clothes and the whole town was decorated with festival gateways. 

The Emperor inspected some of the buildings, including the 

Military Spa Institution, the Municipal Theater, and Emperor's 

Bath. The owners of Grandhotel Pupp – Heinrich Pupp Jr., Karl and 

Julius Pupp Jr. – welcomed Emperor Franz Josef I in person at the 

fountain in front of the hotel and gave him a large flower bouquet. 

A gala lunch for 200 guests was prepared in honor of His Imperial 

and Royal Majesty at the large dining hall of Grandhotel Pupp. The 

finely decorated hall was dominated by the Emperor's bust with the 

Austrian coat-of-arms in the background. After lunch, Emperor 

Franz Josef I rested for a while in the most luxurious hotel suite 

before departing in the late afternoon by train. 

A memory of the emperor´s stay in the Grandhotel Pupp is a special 

bathroom which is a part of the suite where he had a rest after a long 

journey to be able to continue it. If you want to go back in time or 

even feel yourself like an emperor, you have to plan your stay so that 

you can spend it just in our Imperial Suite No. 159.

Sobota 11.5. 2013 je datem, které zůstane v historii Grandhotelu Pupp zapsáno zlatým písmem: otevření Pupp Royal Spa. 

Provoz nového wellness centra byl zahájen pro první hosty letošních májových svátků již 22. dubna, avšak oficiální zahájení se slavilo 

o druhém květnovém víkendu. Symbolické poklepání na základní kámen přitom proběhlo před rokem, přesně 19. dubna 2012.

am 22. April in Betrieb gesetzt. Die offizielle Eröffnung wurde jedoch am zweiten Maiwochenende gefeiert.

Karlovy Vary Souvenirs 

Karlovarský bylinný likér Becherovka je nazýván třináctým léčivým 

pramenem. Výroba tohoto světoznámého hřkosladkého likéru byla 

založena v r. 1807. Recept žaludečního elixíru sestavil již r. 1805 anglický 

lékař dr. Frobrig pro svého přítele, lékárníka Josefa Bechera. 

R. 1841 převzal podnik lékárníkův syn Johann, který začal stáčet 

zlatistý mok do dobře známých zploštělých lahví. Likér se vyrábí 

z lihu, karlovarské vody, asi dvaceti druhů bylinek a koření, vinného 

destilátu a cukru. Přesná receptura je ovšem tajemstvím. Tajemstvím 

však není, že již více než 200 let chutná Becherovka všude, kde se 

objeví. Počátkem 20. století zachutnala i rakouskému císaři natolik, 

že každý měsíc bylo ke dvoru dodáváno padesát litrů likéru.

Der KARLSBADER Kräuterlikör BECHEROVKA 

Der Karlsbader Kräuterlikör Becherovka wird auch als die dreizehnte 

Heilquelle bezeichnet. Die Erzeugung dieses weltbekannten bittersüssen 

Likörs begann im Jahre 1807. Das Rezept des Magenelixiers bereitete 

schon im Jahre 1805 der englische Arzt Frobrig für seinen Freund, den 

Apotheker Josef Becher, vor. Im Jahre 1841 übernahm den Betrieb der 

Sohn des Apothekers Johann, der das goldige Getränk in die weltbekannten 

flachen Flaschen abzufüllen begann. Der Likör wurde aus 

Weingeist, Karlsbader Mineralwasser, ungefähr 20 Sorten Kräuter und 

Gewürze, Weindestillat und Zucker erzeugt. Die genaue Rezeptur ist 

selbstverständlich ein Geheimnis. Doch es ist kein Geheimnis, dass der 

Likör überall schmeckt, wo er erscheint. Am Beginn 20. Jahr hunderts 

schmeckte er dem österreichischen Kaiser so viel, dass zu seinem Hof 

jeden Monat 50 Liter Likör eingeliefert wurden. 

Die Zubereitung des Cocktails MIDNIGHT PUPP ist im Gegensatz 

zur Herstellung vom Becherovka kein Geheimnis, deshalb bieten

The Thirteenth SPRING 

Karlovy Vary herbal liqueur becherovka is often said to be the thirteenth 

healing spring of Karlovy Vary. The production of this world- 

-famous bitter-sweet liqueur started in 1807. The English doctor 

Frobrig made up the recipe for the liqueur for his friend, the pharmaceutical 

chemist Josef Becher, in 1805. In 1841 the factory was 

taken over by Josef Becher's son Johann who started to fill the typical 

flat bottles with the golden liquid. The liqueur is made of spirit, 

Karlovy Vary mineral water, about 20 sorts of herbs and spices, destilled 

wine and sugar. A detailed recipe is, of course, a secret. But it 

is not a secret that becherovka has been enjoyed for more than 200 

years everywhere, where it has appeared. At the beginning of this 

century the Austrian kaiser started to like it so much that 50 litres of 

it had to be delivered to his court every month. 

Unlike the recipe for the preparation of the liqueur Becherovka, the 

preparation of the MIDNIGHT PUPP 

cocktail is not a secret. We can therefore 

give you instructions how to mix 

this famous drink which is one of 

those included in the list of drinks of 

Becher´s Bar. It consists of Becherovka 

and Amaretto liqueurs, Apricot 

Brandy, orange juice and a bit of grenadine. 

All ingredients are mixed 

with ice cubes in a Boston shaker and 

the cocktail is served in a glass for 

a long drink. We wish you a great

Karlovy Vary Curiosities 

Knedlíkový 

den 

Osudy Grandhotelu hotelu Pupp jsou drobnou úsměvnou historkou 

spjaty i s válečným rokem 1866, kdy se v c.k. Čechách bojovalo proti 

nepřátelským Prusům. 8. července dorazil do Karlových Varů po zuby 

ozbrojený oddíl devíti pruských hulánů se svým velitelem Livoriem. 

Před radnicí na Tržišti s tasenými pistolemi ohlásili, že následující 

den do města přijede 1400 vojáků pruské pěchoty a 600 jezdců, úhrnem 

tedy 2 000 mužů, pro něž a jejich koně je třeba neprodleně nachystat 

jídlo. Následující den, právě když poručík Livorius v poklidu 

snídal v Café-Salonu, přijel tryskem poručík Below koňmo přes celé 

město ke kavárně. Tam Livoriovi něco šeptal do ucha. Po několika 

minutách už seděli všichni Prusové v sedlech a hnali se přes Chebský 

most z města pryč jako splašení. Jejich rychlý ústup způsobila falešná 

zpráva, že se do Karlových Varů blíží osm tisíc Bavorů, spojenců Rakouska. 

Karlovarští občané se však vydatně připravili na stravování 

dvou tisíc Prusů, a teď museli všechno jídlo a pití s vypětím všech sil 

zkonzumovat sami. Od těch dob se v Karlových Varech devátému 

červenci začalo říkat Knedlíkový den. 

Knedlík je přílohou nejen vepřové pečeně se zelím, ale i dalšího tradičního 

českého jídla, svíčkové na smetaně. V Grandhotelu Pupp si ji každoročně 

vychutnává také prezident Mezinárodního filmového festivalu 

Jiří Bartoška. V Grandrestaurantu ji během natáčení jedné z bondovek 

Casino Royale ochutnal také Daniel Craig - a byl ohromen. Až tedy navštívíte 

naši restauraci, nezapomeňte tuto českou specialitu ochutnat. 

Knödeltag 

Das Schicksal vom Grandhotel Pupp ist auch mit einer kleinen, lustigen 

Geschichte aus dem Kriegsjahr 1866 verbunden, als man in k. u. 

k. Böhmen gegen die feindlichen Preußen kämpfte. Am 8. Juli 1866 

kam nach Karlsbad, bis an die Zähne bewaffnete, eine Truppe von 

neun preußischen Reitern mit ihrem Befehlshaber Livorius. Vor dem 

Rathaus am Markt verkündeten sie mit gezückten Pistolen, dass am 

folgenden Tag in die Stadt 1 400 Soldaten der preußischen Infanterie 

und 600 Reiter, insgesamt also 2 000 Mann, einkehren, für die und 

ihre Pferde man sofort Essen vorbereiten muss. Am nächsten Tag, 

gerade als Leutnant Livorius in Ruhe im Café-Salon Pupp frühstückte, 

ritt Leutnant Below rasend durch die ganze Stadt zum Café. Dort 

flüsterte er Livorius etwas ins Ohr. Nach einigen Minuten saßen bereits 

alle Preußen in den Satteln und rasten wie von Sinnen über die 

Egerer Brücke aus der Stadt heraus. Ihren schnellen Abmarsch verursachte 

eine falsche Nachricht, dass sich Karlsbad 8 000 Bayern

nähern, die Alliierten von Österreich. Die Karlsbader bereiteten sich 

reichlich auf die Verpflegung von 2 000 Preußen vor und jetzt mussten 

sie das gesamte Essen und Trinken unter Anspannung aller Kräfte 

selbst essen. Seitdem nannte man den 9. Juli in Karlsbad Knödeltag. 

Den Knödel gibt es als Beilage nicht nur zum Schweinebraten mit 

Sauerkraut, sondern auch zur weiteren traditionellen böhmischen 

Speise, zum Lendenbraten mit Rahm. Im Grandhotel Pupp genießt 

ihn jedes Jahr auch der Präsident des Internationalen Filmfestivals 

Herr Jiří Bartoška. Im Grandrestaurant probierte ihn während der 

Dreharbeiten des Bondfilmes Casino Royale auch Daniel Craig – 

und er war verblüfft. Wenn Sie also unser Restaurant besuchen, 

vergessen Sie nicht diese tschechische Spezialität zu kosten. 

The DUMPLING DAY 

A rather funny story ties the history of Grandhotel Pupp with the war 

year of 1866 when imperial Bohemia fought against the Prussian 

enemy. On 8 th July 1866 a troop of nine Prussian uhlans with their 

commander, Livorius, arrived in Carlsbad armed to the teeth. 

Standing in front of the town hall in the Market with their pistols 

drawn, they announced that 1,400 men from the Prussian infantry 

and 600 men from the cavalry would arrive the next day and that 

food needed to be provided for the 2,000 men and their horses. 

The next day, just when Lieutenant Livorius was having his breakfast 

at the Café-Salon, Lieutenant Below rode across the town at 

a gallop to the coffeehouse. He whispered something to Livorius. In 

no time, all the Prussians were on their horses, racing over Cheb 

Bridge and heading out of the town. Their rapid retreat was caused 

by false news of 8,000 Bavarians, who were Austrian allies, approaching 

Carlsbad. The people of Carlsbad had made thorough preparations 

for feeding the 2,000 men and they were now forced to eat 

and drink all the rations themselves. Since then, the 9th of July has 

been known as Dumpling Day in Carlsbad. 

A dumpling is a trimming not only of pork and cabbage, but also 

of another traditional Czech meal – roast sirloin in cream sauce. 

The president of the International Film Festival Jiří Bartoška relishes 

it in the Grandhotel Pupp every year. Daniel Craig tasted it 

in the Grandrestaurant too when one of Bond films, Casino 

Royale, was being shot – and he was astonished. So when you visit 

our restaurant, do not forget to taste this Czech specialty.

Imperial 

TUNELOVÁ LANOVKA 

Během několika minut se můžete dopravit od Vřídla k nejvýše položenému 

karlovarskému hotelu Imperial. Trať vedoucí z Divadelního 

náměstí (v nadmořské výšce 381,4 m) je dlouhá 127 metrů a překonává 

výškový rozdíl 57 metrů při stoupání 49 stupňů. Tunel je vytesán 

ve skále, který proti sobě razily dvě party italských tunelářů 

v letech 1905-1906, pouze 113 dní. Horní stanice lanovky (v nadmořské 

výšce 436,6 m) se původně jmenovala Helenin dvůr, neboť 

vedla na výšinu téhož jména. Unikátní tunelová lanovka zahájila 

provoz 18. května 1907. Jezdila však jen v letní sezóně. Lázeňští 

hosté se tak mohli dopravovat od pramenů a z promenád k tehdejší 

výletní restauraci a dále na túry po okolních lesích. Stavba hotelu 

Imperial začala o rok později, lanovka pak sloužila i k přepravě 

stavebního materiálu. Vozy byly zpočátku dřevěné, v roce 1961 byly 

na původních podvozcích namontovány kovové kabiny. Až po celkové 

rekonstrukci veškeré původní švýcarské technologie byly nahrazeny 

v roce 1987 zcela novými vozy. Vydejte se i Vy z údolí říčky 

Teplé do půvabného parku hotelu Imperial a dále ke krásným vyhlídkám 

na lázeňské město. Tato lanová dráha představuje ojedinělou 

technickou stavbu svého druhu a je nejstarší tunelovou lanovkou 

v Evropě. Navzdory svému věku je stále moderním a ekologickým 

dopravním prostředkem. A hlavně velmi užitečným. 

Tunnelstandseilbahn Imperial 

In wenigen Minuten kann man vom Sprudel zu dem höchst gelegenen 

Karlsbader Hotel Imperial kommen. Die Bahn, die von Divadelní 

náměstí (Theaterplatz) (in der Seehöhe von 381,4 m) führt, ist 127 

Meter lang und überwindet einen Höhenunterschied von 57 Metern 

bei einer Steigung von 49 Grad. Der Tunnel ist im Felsen gemeißelt. 

Er wurde von beiden Seiten von zwei Gruppen italienischer 

Tunnelbauer in den Jahren 1905-1906 (nur113 Tage) geschlagen. Die 

obere Station der Seilbahn (in der Seehöhe von 436,6 m) hieß ursprünglich 

Helenenhof, denn sie führte auf den gleichnamigen 

Hügel. Die einmalige Tunnelseilbahn wurde am 18. Mai 1907 in 

Betrieb gesetzt. Sie wurde jedoch nur in der Sommer saison betrieben. 

Die Kurgäste konnten so von den Quellen und den Promenaden 

zum Ausflugsrestaurant kommen und von hier aus weiter in die 

umliegenden Wälder wandern. Der Aufbau vom Hotel Imperial begann 

ein Jahr später, die Seilbahn diente dann auch zur Beförderung 

vom Baumaterial. Die Wagen waren anfangs aus Holz, im Jahre 1961 

wurden auf die ursprünglichen Fahrgestelle Metall kabinen montiert. 

Erst nach der Gesam tre konstruktion von sämtlichen ursprünglichen 

schweizerischen Technologien wurden sie im Jahre 1987 von völlig 

neuen Wagen ersetzt. Begeben auch Sie sich vom Tepltal in den 

malerischen Park des Hotels Imperial und weiter zu den schönen 

Aussichten auf die Kurstadt. Diese Seilbahn stellt einen einmaligen 

technischen Bau seiner Art dar und sie ist die älteste Tunnelseilbahn 

in Europa. Trotz ihres Alters ist sie stets ein modernes und ökologisches 

Verkehrsmittel, das vor allem sehr nützlich ist.

only), is chiselled in a piece of rock. The upper station of the funicular 

(at an altitude of 436.6 m) was originally called Helena Court as 

it led to a height of the same name. The unique tunnel funicular was 

set into operation on 18th May 1907. However, it was used only in 

the summer season. It made it possible for spa visitors to get from the 

springs and promenades up to the excursion restaurant and the spa 

woods surrounding it. The construction of the Hotel Imperial started 

a year later and the funicular was also used to transport building 

material. The cabins were made of wood at first. It was only in 1961 

that new metal cabins were fixed on the original gears. Completely 

new cabins replaced the original Swiss ones during the renovation of 

the funicular in 1987. You can go for a walk to the beautiful park of 

the Hotel Imperial in the valley of the Teplá River and from here to 

wonderful vantage points too. This funicular represents a unique 

technical sight and is the oldest tunnel funicular in Europe. Despite 

its age it is still a modern and an environment-friendly means of 

transport. And, first of all, a very useful one.

FILMOVÝ FESTIVAL KARLOVY VARY

Tento filmový svátek patří do skupiny prestižních festivalů jako jsou 

MFF v Cannes, Berlíně, Benátkách či Tokiu. Každoročně představí 

více než 200 nových filmů z celého světa. Kromě projekcí filmů 

zde probíhají koncerty, divadelní představení, párty, ceremoniály, 

tiskové konference. Grandhotel Pupp je pro Mezinárodní filmový 

festival nepostradatelný. Bydlí zde filmové hvězdy a další VIP 

hosté, ve Slavnostním sále se promítají filmy a pořádá se zde 

řada festivalových akcí. Vrcholnými společenskými událostmi

FESTIVAL BeethoVENOVY DNY 2013

Hudební festival Beethovenovy dny je významnou součástí letní 

kulturní sezony lázeňského města. Karlovarský symfonický orchestr 

tento festival pořádá již od roku 1992 jako připomínku skladatelova 

pobytu v lázeňském městě v roce 1812. Beethovenova hudba se 

stala trvalou součástí karlovarského hudebního života. Program 

22. ročníku hudebního festivalu budou tvořit tři symfonické a jeden 

komorní koncert.

Das Musikfestival Beethoven-Tage ist eine bedeutende Veranstaltung 

der Karlsbader Sommer-Kultur-Saison. Dieses Festival 

wird von dem Karlsbader Symphonieorchester bereits seit dem 

Jahre 1992 als Andenken an den Aufenthalt des Komponisten in 

der Kurstadt im Jahre 1812 veranstaltet. Beethovens Musik wurde 

zu einem festen Bestandteil des Karlsbader Musiklebens. Auf dem 

Programm des 22. Jahrganges stehen drei Symphoniekonzerte und 

ein Kammerkonzert.

The music festival Beethoven’s Days is an important part of the 

summer cultural season of the town. The Karlovy Vary Symphony 

Orchestra has been organizing this festival since the year 1992 to 

remember the composer´s stay in the spa town in 1812. Beethoven´s 

music has become a permanent part of Karlovy Vary musical life.

Pupp became an important spa hotel with all achievements of 

modern balneology which is based on verified spa traditions. The 

publication Karlovy Vary – A World-Famous Spa will tell you all 

you need to know about the history of Karlovy Vary balneology, 

curative springs and spa treatments. 

Projeďte karlovarské údolí autovláčkem 

Od hlavní pošty až po Poštovní dvůr a dále až k hotelu Alice 

v Březové a zpět jezdí podél říčky Teplé vyhlídkový autovláček. Je 

možno si tak bez větší námahy prohlédnout celé lázeňské centrum 

a dále pak i půvabné údolí říčky Teplé. Nejbližší zastávka od 

Grandhotelu Pupp je u Císařských lázní. 

Fahren Sie durch das Karlsbader Tal 

mit einem Touristenzug 

Entlang des Flusses Tepl fährt von der Hauptpost bis zum Posthof und 

weiter bis zum Hotel Alice in Březová und zurück ein Touristenzug. 

Man kann so mühelos das gesamte Kurzentrum besichtigen und 

weiter dann auch das malerische Tal des Flusses Tepl. Die nächste 

Haltestelle vom Grandhotel Pupp ist am Kaiserbad. 

Go Through the Valley of Karlovy Vary 

on a Sightseeing Train 

The sightseeing train goes along the Teplá River from the main post 

office as far as the Post Court and further to the Hotel Alice in Březová 

and then back. You can see so the whole spa centre and the charming 

valley of the River Teplá without much effort. The nearest stop from 

the Grandhotel Pupp is the stop at the Imperial Spa Building. 

Zklidněte svou mysl v japonské zahradě 

Kuriozita evropského formátu, japonská zahrada je součástí 

rozlehlého anglického parku kolem Parkhotelu Richmond. Zahrada 

nese jméno manželky německého lékaře dr. Erwina von Bälz, 

která přispěla ke sblížení japonské a evropské kultury. Kruhový 

tvar zahrady s vnitřním obloukem vyjadřuje principy jin a jang – 

sjednocení kladu a záporu v harmonický celek, nebo dva světadíly 

- Evropu a Asii, nebo také ostrov muže a ostrov ženy. O zbudování 

unikátní zahrady se zasloužila Japonka žijící v Mnichově, paní 

Masumi Böttcher-Muraki. Za svůj počin obdržela v roce 1998 Cenu 

města, za trvalou péči o zahradu byla letos v květnu jmenována 

čestnou občankou Karlových Varů.

im Japanischen Garten 

Ein Kuriosum vom europäischen Format, ein Japanischer Garten, 

ist ein Teil des umfassenden englischen Parks um das Parkhotel 

Richmond. Der Garten trägt den Namen der Gattin des deutschen 

Arztes Dr. Erwin von Bälz, die zur Annäherung der japanischen und 

europäischen Kultur beitrug. Der kreisförmige Garten mit einem 

inneren Bogen drückt die Yin und Yang Prinzipien aus – die Einigung 

vom Positiven und dem Negativen in ein harmonisches Ganze oder 

zwei Erdteile – Europa und Asien, oder auch die Insel des Mannes 

und die Insel der Frau. Um den Aufbau des einmaligen Gartens 

verdiente sich eine in München lebende Japanerin, Frau Masumi 

Böttcher-Muraki. Für Ihre Handlung erhielt Sie im Jahre 1998 den 

Preis der Stadt, für ihre dauerhafte Pflege um den Garten wurde Sie 

dieses Jahr im Mai zur Ehrenbürgerin von Karlsbad ernannt. 

Calm Your Mind in the Japanese Garden 

A European rarity, the Japanese garden, is a part of a vast English 

park surrounding the Parkhotel Richmond. The garden was named in 

honour of the German doctor Erwin von Bälz´s wife who had managed 

to bring Japanese and European culture close together. The circular 

shape of the garden with an inner arc expresses the principles yin 

and yang – a unification of the positive and the negative aspects into 

a harmonious whole, or two continents Europe and Asia or, too, the 

island of the man and the island of the woman. It was a Japanese lady 

living in Munich, Mrs. Masumi Böttcher-Muraki that was instrumental 

in establishing the garden. She was awarded the Prize of the Town 

for her initiative in 1998 and was made the Honorary Freewoman of 

Karlovy Vary for her permanent care for the garden in May 2013.
