BUCHBESPRECHUNG
Jörg Kärger:
Leipzig, Einstein, Diffusion.
With paintings by Taro Ito
Leipziger Universitätsverlag 2007.
206 Pages, price 19,00 €
The fi rst chapter is: ‘Promenading through Leipzig and Some
Basics of Diffusion’. This title represents the style of the whole
book: It contains essays about the development of physics,
specifi cally at the University of Leipzig, during the exciting years
from Fick through our times. The other chapters are: ‘One and
a Half Century of Diffusion: Fick, Einstein, Before and Beyond’,
by Philibert, ‘Physics in Leipzig in Einstein’s Days’, by Rechenberg
and Wiemers. ‘Diffusion and Brownian Motion Analogies
in the Migration of Atoms, Animals, Men, and Ideas’ by Vogl,
‘The Technical Impact of Diffusion in Nanopores’ by Ruthven,
‘Anomalous Conduction and Diffusion in Complex Networks’ by
Havlin, ‘Molecules Dancing in Membranes’ by Vattulainen, and
‘Diffusion and Leipzig - a Personal Acknowledgment’ by Kärger.
All papers are presented in German and English on neighboring
columns. This permits the reviewer to critically compare both
versions. There are only very few instances where the translation
does not hit the original exactly (examples: p. 63 ‘The
never-ending movement…., die unendliche Teilchenbewegung….’
or on p.92 ‘….das Schwingungsspektrum der Atome….’, ,…..the
full resonance spectrum of atoms…..’ ). I will also give an example
for slightly problematic formulations in both languages:
Page 67, ‘Eliminating the coeffi cient of diffusion between eq.
(6) and (7), Einstein obtains a relation for the mean square
displacement L in a time t: L = (2Dt) 1/2 .’The same statement
is given in the neighboring column in German. But if the coeffi -
cient D is eliminated it cannot appear anymore anywhere else.
As mentioned earlier, the articles should be described as essays.
They are directed at the interested public but they at the
same time claim the attention of scientists in the related fi elds.
Excellent examples for the completeness with which this goal
was achieved are the contributions by Philibert and by Vogl. As
in the other contributions we are introduced to the development
of basic physical ideas and to the historical context in
with they were developed. Fascinating in the chapter by Vogl is
the description of analogies between various representations
of equilibration processes. These and the other contributions
are excellent demonstrations that understandability and correctness
do not exclude each other.
We should be grateful to the editor who made this cultured and
educating volume available to us.
