4 Diskussion
Die vorliegenden Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die nicht-chirurgische
Parodontaltherapie an mehrwurzeligen Zähnen sowohl
mit dem Vector-System als auch mit konventionellen Handinstrumenten
zu einer signifikanten Reduktion der mittleren
Sondierungstiefe und einem signifikanten Gewinn an
klinischem Attachmentlevel führen kann. Zwischen den
Therapien wurden keine statistisch signifikanten Unterschiede
gefunden.
Die Tatsache, dass alle behandelten Taschen problemlos
verheilten, erlaubt die Schlussfolgerung, dass beide Behandlungsmethoden
gut toleriert werden.
Es sollte betont werden, dass zur Zeit nur eine publizierte
Studie klinische und histologische Ergebnisse nach nichtchirurgischer
Behandlung mit dem Vector-System untersucht
hat [7]. In dieser Studie konnte nachgewiesen werden,
dass die mittlere Sondierungstiefe (mit SD) von 7,5 ± 1,0
mm an der Baseline 6 Monate nach Behandlung mit dem
Vector-System auf 5,3 ± 0,9 mm reduziert wurde. Der mittlere
CAL (SD) wurde von 10,0 ± 1,3 mm an der Baseline 6 Monate
nach Behandlung mit dem Vector-System auf 8,5 ± 0,8
mm reduziert. Die histologische Auswertung zeigte eine
Heilung mit langem Saumepithel und keine Regeneration
von Wurzelzement, Desmodont und Alveolarknochen nach
der Behandlung mit dem Vector-System.
Die in der oben angeführten histologischen Studie erreichte
Reduzierung der mittleren Sondierungstiefe und der
Gewinn an mittlerem CAL ist in Übereinstimmung mit ver-

4 Discussion
The results obtained in this study have shown that nonsurgical
periodontal therapy in multirooted teeth with either the
Vector system or with conventional hand instruments may
lead to a significant reduction of the mean probing depth and
to a significant improvement of the clinical attachment level.
No statistically significant differences in any of the investigated
parameters were found between the two groups.
The finding that all treated pockets healed without any
complication indicates that both treatment modalities are
very well tolerated.
It is also important to mention that, until now, only one
study was published evaluating the clinical and histological
results after nonsurgical treatment with the Vector system
[7]. That study proved that the mean probing depth (PD) of
7.5 ± 1.0 mm at baseline sank to 5.3 ± 0.9 mm within a period
of 6 months after being treated with the Vector system, and
the mean CAL of 10.0 ± 1.3 mm at baseline was reduced to
8.5 ± 0.8 mm after 6 months. The histological assessment
showed a healing with long junctional epithelium and no regeneration
of the root cementum, periodontal ligament, and
alveolar bone.
The results obtained by this histological study, i.e. the reduction
of the mean probing depth and the improvement of
the mean CAL, correspond with other data published where
the nonsurgical periodontal treatment was effected with
hand instruments, sonic or ultrasonic devices [12, 13]. These
clinical studies confirm that the reduction of the probing
