Boehner Calls on Obama to Justify Continuing Military Action
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(VOA) The Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, John
Boehner, is calling on President Barack Obama to make his case to the
American people for continued U.S. military operations in Libya and
Afghanistan. The call comes as frustration in Congress is growing among
some lawmakers from both major political parties about the president's
failure to obtain authorization from Congress for the participation of U.S.
forces in the NATO mission over Libya.
House Speaker John Boehner said in these tough economic times, where
Congress is looking to cut government spending wherever possible, there is
growing frustration in Congress with the taxpayer dollars that have gone to
finance military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that are now
flowing to finance the NATO air strikes in Libya.
Russia signs Afghan arms contract with US
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(FT) Russia is to supply military helicopters to the US for use in
Afghanistan, marking a major arms contract between the former cold war
foes.
Rosoboronexport, Russia’s state arms exporter, signed a contract with the
US army last week to supply 21 military helicopters to boost the capacity
of the Afghan air force, the company said. Under the deal, Russia will
provide spare parts for the helicopters and help train Afghan pilots.
Deliveries will begin in October and be completed during 2012.
“This is a very serious contract,” said Vyacheslav Davidenko, of
Rosoboronexport. “It demonstrates a high level of US trust in Russia and a
high level of Russian trust in the US.”
