Collusion probe judge frozen out by minister<br />

(newsletter) THE judge in charge of probing claims of collusion between the<br />

Garda and IRA in the murder of two RUC officers has been frozen out by the<br />

Irish justice minister, a leaked e-mail has confirmed.<br />

Fine Gael justice minister Alan Shatter has proposed an end date of<br />

November 30 for the Smithwick Tribunal into the 1989 murders of chief supt<br />

Harry Breen and supt Bob Buchanan despite the fact the public hearings will<br />

not even start until next week.<br />

(BBC) The chairman of a tribunal into the IRA murder of two senior RUC<br />

officers has written to the Irish government to raise concern at the<br />

inquiry's remit.<br />

Harry Breen and Bob Buchanan were shot dead on their way back from a<br />

meeting with Gardai in Dundalk in 1989.<br />

The Irish government wants to set a November deadline for the tribunal's<br />

final report. Public hearings have not yet started.<br />

'Spy cameras' target student protesters as young as 16<br />

(belfasttelegraph) Police are using CCTV images taken on university and<br />

college campuses, sometimes with the collusion of university authorities,<br />

to "spy" on student demonstrators as young as 16, it was claimed yesterday.<br />

University lecturers are demanding an independent investigation into the<br />

"over zealous" use of surveillance techniques against students during the<br />

policing of demonstrations against fees rises and public spending cuts.<br />
