Collusion probe judge frozen out by minister

(newsletter) THE judge in charge of probing claims of collusion between the
Garda and IRA in the murder of two RUC officers has been frozen out by the
Irish justice minister, a leaked e-mail has confirmed.
Fine Gael justice minister Alan Shatter has proposed an end date of
November 30 for the Smithwick Tribunal into the 1989 murders of chief supt
Harry Breen and supt Bob Buchanan despite the fact the public hearings will
not even start until next week.

New concerns over Breen/Buchanan murders inquiry

(BBC) The chairman of a tribunal into the IRA murder of two senior RUC
officers has written to the Irish government to raise concern at the
inquiry's remit.
Harry Breen and Bob Buchanan were shot dead on their way back from a
meeting with Gardai in Dundalk in 1989.
The Irish government wants to set a November deadline for the tribunal's
final report. Public hearings have not yet started.

'Spy cameras' target student protesters as young as 16

(belfasttelegraph) Police are using CCTV images taken on university and
college campuses, sometimes with the collusion of university authorities,
to "spy" on student demonstrators as young as 16, it was claimed yesterday.
University lecturers are demanding an independent investigation into the
"over zealous" use of surveillance techniques against students during the
policing of demonstrations against fees rises and public spending cuts.
