Struth, in which one always expects something to happen, the portrayed person to blink or to start to weep. Dieter Kiessling shows the complete figure, so that the body and the clothing become much more important than in a portrait concentrating strictly on the face. Nevertheless, one attempts automatically to read the thoughts in the face of the fair-haired boy and to interpret his look. In “60 Minutes, 360 Degrees, G.K.”, the figure of the boy, his clothing and the location all fit together, one believes readily that he plays tennis and that these are the clothes he normally wears on this court. All the details of the picture harmonize together, giving it documentary character, and, in order to support this impression as well as possible, they are kept as neutral as possible in the recording and its processing. Again, Kiessling has paid exact attention to details, for example, in always keeping the picture exactly horizontal, which was itself a challenge with the home-made turning mechanism. Or in his controlling of the washing-out of the white values of the socks, which, without further processing, would have appeared as white spots. The sound level has also been processed to intensify the atmosphere of the location with birdsong and the bouncing of balls. All these stages of work, taking up much time and technology, serve one purpose, to rid the situation shown in the video of distracting details which could divert the attention of the viewer from the boy’s facial expressions and from the changing of the light – from the contemplative experience of time. The series of one-hour portraits continues with, to date, five further videos from the years 2007 to 2010, showing students of the Kunsthochschule Mainz (‘Academy of Art in Mainz’). They turn in the classic ‘white cube’ of the exhibition service, in the videos, they stand each in front of his or her own pictures, which were hung up for presentation at the place of study.
