Volker David Kirchner widmete die
1. Sinfonie seinem kurz zuvor verstorbenen
Freund Hubert Meyer. In fünf kontrastreichen
Sätzen beleuchtet Kirchner die
stilistischen Eigenheiten von Schumann
(Reliquien), Mahler (Dybuk), Wagner
(Kondukt), Brahms (Golem) und Schubert
(Katakomben). So erinnert die Gestalt des
1. Satzes an die kunstvollen Modulationsprozesse
Schumannscher Lieder. Kirchner
zitiert jedoch nie wirklich: Die Anklänge
an die großen Komponisten sind nicht
eindeutig, lassen vielfältige Assoziationen
zu.
Kirchners 1. Sinfonie mit dem Titel „Totentanz“
beschwört die musikalische Vergangenheit
herauf und deutet zugleich
auf die Auseinandersetzung der Lebenden
mit dem Tod, denn - so heißt der
Untertitel des fünften und letzten Satzes
der Sinfonie: „Die Furcht vor dem Ende
ist die Quelle allen Tuns.“
Volker David Kirchner dedicated his
1st Symphony to his recently deceased
friend Hubert Meyer. In five contrasting
movements, Kirchner examines the
stylistic quirks of Schumann (‘relics’),
Mahler (‘dybbuk’), Wagner (‘procession’),
Brahms (‘Golem’), and Schubert
(‘catacombs’). The first movement, for
example, is reminiscent of the elaborate
modulations found in Schumann’s
lieder. However, Kirchner actually
never uses any real quotes: echoes
of the great composers are not clear,
allowing many different associations.
Kirchner’s 1st Symphony, entitled ‘Totentanz’
(‘Dance of the Dead’), evokes
the musical past, but at the same time,
is a matter of the living dealing with
death. The subtitle of the fifth and last
movement of the symphony sums it up
as ‘the fear of the end is the source of
all doings’.
