The most interesting monument in Sv. Lovreč is the Parish Church 

of St. Martin from the 11th century, a three-nave building with three 

semicircular apses and partly preserved frescoes dating from the 

same period. Along the southern wall of the church is the town loggia 

which today houses a collection of stone monuments.

Giostra, Competition 

of Knights 

Poreč, 05. - 12.09. 

The horse race Giostra follows 

the rules of knights competition 

held in Poreč, 14th 

April in 1745. Bartolomeo 

Rigo, the knight competitor 

and district chancellor wrote 

that the majestic racecourse 

had been constructed on the 

shore about hundred steps 

(about 180 meters) long and 

about 10 feet wide, narrowing 

towards the end to about 

5 feet. The racecourse featured 

a fancy stage where 

the noblemen watched the 

rivalry, and on the right side 

of the race course, the guards 

made of 100 soldiers and officers 

guaranteed order. Town 

walls and windows overlooking 

the racecourse were richly 

decorated with the rarest 

adornments found in Poreč, 

and the port featured equally 

rich decorated galleons. Six 

smaller, undecorated galleons 

accompanied them. The 

sea was covered with sailing 

ships from which the curious 

folk watched the competition. 

The game featured 8 knights. 

Each of them had their squire 

and a godfather on the horse. 

They where supervised by 

the Maestro di Campo. Trumpeters 

would play three bars 

- the godfather would hand 

the spear to the knight, and 

on the second sign the squire 

marched through the racecourse 

to represent the rights 

and actions of his knight. On 

the third sign, the knight would 

start a race throwing spears 

on the marked places. Everybody 

competed in the same 

way and in three races. After 

the final race, the judges and 

their ambassadors would check 

the results on the targets and 

declare the winner. The tribunal 

would call for the best and give 

him two top quality guns worn 

on the hips, the usual reward 

for the winner of Giostra. 

Giostra, Wettbewerb 

der Ritter von Poreč 

Poreč, 05. - 12.09. 

Das Pferderennen Giostra wird, 

gemäß der Schriftstücke über 

den Ritterwettbewerb in Poreč 

vom 14. Februar 1745, abgehalten. 

Bartolomeo Rigo, ein Ritter 

des Wettbewerbers und kommunaler 

Kanzler, schrieb, dass 

sich an der Küste eine großartige 

Rennstrecke mit einer Länge 

von etwa hundert Schritten erhob 

und am Anfang etwa zehn 

Meter breit war und sich in 

Richtung Ende auf nur fünf Meter 

verengte. An der Rennstrecke 

befand sich eine prächtige 

Bühne, von der aus, der Adel 

den Wettbewerb beobachtete 

und auf der rechten Seite der 

Rennstrecke befand sich eine 

Garde von hundert Soldaten 

und Offizieren, die für die Sicherheit 

sorgten. Die Stadtmauern 

und Fenstern, die auf die 

Strecke sahen, waren reichlich 

geschmückt und dies mit den 

seltensten Ornamenten, die in 

Poreč gefunden werden konnten 

und im Hafen befanden sich 

ebenso reich geschmückte Galeeren. 

Diese wurden von sechs 

kleineren ungeschmückten Galeere 

begleitet. Das Meer war 

von den vielen Booten bedeckt, 

von denen die neugierigen Zuschauer, 

der Feierlichkeit folgen 

konnten. Am Spiel nahmen acht 

Reiter teil. Jeder von ihnen hatte 

seinen Anführer und einen Sekundanten 

auf einem Pferd. Sie 

standen unter der Aufsicht vom 

Mastro di Campo, dem Hauptmeister, 

mit all seiner Macht, 

den Reitern und Trompeterspielern 

sowie den Reservepferden. 

Vor dem Turnier gingen alle 

zum Palast des Spielmeisters, 

wo es einen Empfang und ein 

großzügiges Bankett gab und 

danach machten sie sich, so 

gegen 20 Uhr, auf den Weg in 

Richtung Rennstrecke. Sie defilierten 

in zwei Richtungen und 

meldeten dem Tribunal der Herren 

der Richter die Namen. Die 

Trompeter bliesen drei Takte. 

Beim ersten Takt übergab der 

Pate dem Wettbewerbsteilnehmer 

den Speer, beim zweiten 

Takt defilierte der Anführer bis 

zum Ende der Rennstrecke, um 

so die Rechte seines Reiters zu 

vertreten. Beim dritten Zeichen 

begann der Reiter das Rennen, 

indem er mit seinem Speer in 

den angegebenen Bereichen 

hantierte. In der gleichen Weise 

nahmen alle anderen in drei 

Rennen am Wettbewerb teil. 

Nach dem letzten Wettkampf 

überprüften die Herren Richter 

und ihre Stellvertreter am Ziel 

das Resultat der Teilnehmer 

und verkündeten den Sieger. 

Das Tribunal rief den Besten zu 

sich und übergab ihm mit zwei 

erstklassigen Pistolen, die auf 

der Hüfte getragen wurden, 

dem üblichen Geschenke für 

den Gewinner der Giostra.

La Femme Musketeer 

Aware of his daughter’s dream 

to become the first lady musketeer, 

Jacques D’Artagnan, the 

most popular musketeer in all 

of France, sends her to Paris. To 

prove her worth, Valentine joins 

up with the sons of the three 

musketeers who rode with her 

father. The musketeers are given 

a special mission: they must free 

the kidnapped fiancée of King 

Louis XIV. The kidnapping, however, 

is merely a front for a much 

larger problem. Namely, the evil 

Lady Bolton is in possession of a 

letter that could ruin the king’s 

reputation. Lady Bolton has Valentine 

accused of murder and 

imprisoned. This is cause for the 

musketeers to join forces once 

again under the motto “All for 

one, and one for all”, and set 

off to save the young lady musketeer 

from certain death. If you 

want to experience a small part 

of D’Artagnan’s tale, take the 

road from Pazin to the foothills 

of the Učka mountain range 

and the village of Boljun where 

the movie La Femme Musketeer, 

starring Nastassja Kinski, 

Michael York and Gerard Depardieu, 

was filmed. And be sure 

to take your camera with you 

because you will pass through 

the captivating landscapes and 

scenery of the Boljunčica Valley, 

Vranja and Boljunsko Polje, 

where, as if through a distant 

mist, you can almost hear the 

clashing of D’Artagnan’s sword. 

The history of the small town 

of Boljun, preserved in its bastions, 

round tower, St. George’s 

Church and the romantic panorama 

of north-eastern Istria, is 

reminiscent of the French countryside 

in the 17th century. Once 

you reach Boljun, ask the locals 

to direct you to Pikulići and the 

Buretić family home - which was 

filmed as the birthplace of Valentine 

D’Artagnan, the movie’s 

heroine. Then continue travelling 

to Draguć, another important 

site in D’Artagnan’s tale. Leave 

the Istrian Ypsilon Motorway 

and modern times behind you, 

and instead take the old road 

in the direction of Cerovlje. The 

road will take you to the top of 

a hill but be sure to get there 

before dark because the sunset 

in Draguć is something you don’t 

want to miss. Also, don’t miss the 

town square with its fountain and 

Judges’ Table, and on a romantic 

hill, the small chapels that guard 

a treasure - medieval fresco 

paintings. Jaques D‘Artagnan die 

berühmteste Figur der Musketiere 

in ganz Frankreich, kennt 

den Traum seiner Tochter, die 

der erste weibliche Musketier 

werden möchte und schickt sie nach Paris. 

Um ihre Fähigkeiten zu beweisen, schließt 

sich Valentine den drei Söhnen der Musketiere 

an, die mit ihrem Vater zusammen ritten. Die 

Musketiere erhalten einen besonderen Auftrag 

- die entführte Verlobte von König Ludwig 

XIV. zu befreien. Allerdings ist die Entführung 

nur eine Tarnung, die ein größeres Problem 

kaschiert, denn in den Händen der bösen Lady 

Bolton ist ein Brief, der das Ansehen des Königs 

zerstören könnte. Außerdem beschuldigt 

Lady Bolton Valentine des Mordes und nimmt 

sie gefangen. Die Musketiere versammeln sich 

daraufhin und machen sich unter dem Motto 

„Alle für einen - einer für alle“ auf den Weg 

die junge Musketierfrau vor dem sicheren 

Tod zu retten. Falls Sie in ihrer Fantasie zumindest 

einen Teil der D‘Artagnan Geschichte 

erleben möchten, dann machen Sie sich auf 

den Weg von Pazin bis zum Berg Učka und 

Boljun, wo sie Szenen des Films Le Femme 

Musketeer mit Nastassja Kinski, Michel York 

und Gerard Depardieuom in den Hauptrollen, 

gedreht wurden. Nehmen Sie unbedingt Ihren 

Fotoapparat mit, denn die Landschaft, die Sie 

sehnen werden, ist wirklich inspirierend - im 

Tal Boljunčica, Vranje und Boljunsko Polje,

Romans in Istria 

The Romans introduced a new type of organization in Istria, 

just as throughout entire Europe they were the first to 

start the urbanization, building roads and connecting towns, 

thus greatly encouraged the development of trade. Istria is 

famous as a region rich in high quality stone, a fact well 

known to the Romans, so today there are numerous places 

along the west coast of Istria that were once Roman quarries 

from which stone was taken to erect their magnificent 

buildings. The Amphitheatre of Pula was also built from 

local lime stone. The Romans brought the exploitation of 

stone nearly to perfection through the new way of building, 

stone dressing, decoration, etc. Large parts of the best 

land were turned into state properties ager publicus which 

were then peopled by Roman colony and retired soldiersveterans. 

Many estates belonged to emperors, members of 

their families and friends. They erected villae rusticae which 

served as homes or summer residences and for manufacturing 

various products. Numerous sites, nearly 300 classical 

sites have been registered in Istria; speak of the kiln 

workshops and those for the production of earthenware, 

for making and dyeing cloth, brickyards and workshops for 

amphorae of which the one in Červar near Poreč supplied 

amphorae for emperors.

Die Römer in Istrien 

Die Römer führten in Istrien, wie im übrigen Europa, die 

erste Urbanisation durch. Bauten Straßen und verbanden 

die Städte, was eine erhebliche Weiterentwicklung des Handels 

zur Folge hatte. Entlang der ganzen Westküste der 

Adria-Halbinsel sind die istrische Steinbrüche zu sehen, aus 

denen der Qualitätsstein für die römischen Prunkgebäude 

gewonnen wurde. Die gesamte Baukunst, von der Verarbeitung 

bis zur künstlerischen Ausgestaltung, erreichte eine 

noch nie dagewesene Perfektion. Zu sehen ist das heute 

unter anderem noch beim Amphitheater von Pula, das aus 

heimischem Kalkstein errichtet wurde. Großen Besitzungen 

wurden zu Staatsgütern, sogenannte ager publicus, 

die von römischen Kolonien und pensionierten Soldaten 

bewohnt wurden. Viele gehörten sogar den Kaisern, den 

Mitgliedern der kaiserlichen Familie und ihren Freunden. 

Die villae rusticae dienten zu Wohnzwecken oder dem Urlaub 

der Eigentümer. In den gleichen Villen wurden auch 

verschiedene Produkte hergestellt, wie z. B. Tonwaren, Amphoren, 

Ziegel, wovon fast 300 in Istrien gefundene antike 

Fundorte zeugen. 

Times of the 

Roman Emperors Vrsar 

In the 1st century BC the Romans subjugated the 

Liburnians, so the whole peninsula became part 

of the Roman Empire for several centuries long. 

Roman colonies Pola and Parentium (Pula and 

Poreč) soon developed on the Istrian coast. The 

border between the two territories was going just 

along the Lim Channel (from the Latin word limes 

meaning border). When the Roman rule started, 

the pre-Roman village Vrsar did not cease to exist. 

Moreover, a new settlement of private and public 

buildings arose along the seashore. The settlement 

expanded especially in the late antique period. 

In this area some wealthy Roman aristocrats 

had their properties, as well as country houses, 

villae rusticae. During the Roman times Vrsar was 

more than just a vicus, vilagge. It represented a 

very important market-town for agricultural and 

cattle-raising products such as wine, oil, corn, 

cheese, meat. The vicinity of Ravenna on the opposite 

side of the Adriatic Sea had a great influence 

on the development of trading in Vrsar and 

other Istrian villages. Istrian agricultural products 

were very appreciated on Roman trade market. 

In the background of Vrsar the Roman road Via 

Flavia was passing, connecting Pola (Pula), Parentium 

(Poreč), Tergeste (Trieste) and Aquileia.

Im 1. Jh. v. Chr. besiegten die Römer auch die Liburnen 

so wurde die ganze Halbinsel für einige Jahrhunderte 

Teil des römischen Reichs. An den Küsten Istriens entwickelten 

sich römische Kolonien Pola und Parentium 

(Pula und Poreč) zwischen denen lief die natürliche 

Grenze limesom, die Lim-Bucht (vom lateinischen Wort 

limes: die Grenze). Neben dem alten vorrömischen Vrsar 

wuchs während der Römermacht in Istrien an der 

Küste unter den Hügeln eine neue Siedlung mit privaten 

und öffentlichen Gebäuden. Diese Siedlung erlebte 

ihre Blütezeit in der Spätantike. Im Bereich von Vrsar 

basassen einige reiche römische Aristokraten Höfe 

mit Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäuden, vilae rusticae. In 

jedem Fall war Vrsar in der römischen Zeit mehr als 

ein Dorf (vicus: das Dorf) es war ein wichtiges Handelszentrum 

im Handel mit landwirtschaftlichen Produkten 

und Viehzucht (Wein, Öl, Weizen, Käse, Fleisch...). die 

Nähe der Ravenna auf der anderen Adriaseite hatte 

einen sehr günstigen Einfluss auf die Handelsentwicklung 

in Vrsar sowie in anderen römischen Siedlungen 

Istriens. Die Produkte der istrischen Landwirtschaft waren 

auf den römischen Märkten begehrt. Die römische 

Strasse Via Flavia verband im Hinterland Vrsar; Pola 

(Pula) - Parentium (Poreč) - Tergeste (Trieste) - Aquilea.

Baron Gautsch Rovinj 

Built in 1908, this Austrian passenger ship sank after hitting a mine in 1914. 

It was carrying the families of Austrian officers on the Boka Kotorska - Mali 

Lošinj - Trieste route. Wanting to shorten the voyage, the ship attempted to 

pass through a minefield, nine nautical miles off of Rovinj, because, allegedly, 

a merchant ship had managed to do so shortly before. The Baron Gautsch 

touched a mine amidship portside, and the ship quickly sank. On August 13th, 

on the occasion of the anniversary of those who died, a memorial dive and 

the lowering of chaplets is organised in honour of the victims of the worst sea 

tragedy to take place in the Adriatic area during the First World War. Diving is 

allowed only through diving centres that hold a special permit of the Croatian 

Ministry of Culture, and for safety reasons, entry to the ship is allowed only 

through the first two decks. 

Das österreichische Passagierschiff, erbaut 1908, ist im Jahre 1914 gesunken, 

als es auf eine Miene stieß. Es beförderte Familienmitglieder österreichischer 

Offiziere auf der Route Boka Kotorska - Mali Lošinj - Triest. Mit dem Wunsch die 

Reisezeit zu verkürzen, hat das Schiff versucht durch ein Mienenfeld 9 nm außerhalb 

von Rovinj durchzukommen, da auf dieser Route, angeblich direkt vor ihm, 

auch ein Handelsschiff durchgekommen ist. Auf der linken Seite, ungefähr in der 

Mitte des Schiffes, hat das Schiff eine Miene berührt und ist innerhalb kürzester 

Zeit gesunken. Anlässlich des Jahrestages des Untergangs, am 13. August, wird 

ein Memorialtauchen und das Niederlegen von Kränzen zu Ehren den Opfern 

der größten Seefahrtstragödie des Ersten Weltkriegs an der Adria organisiert. 

Tauchen ist nur über Taucherzentren möglich, welche eine besondere Genehmigung 

des Ministeriums für Kultur der Republik Kroatien besitzen; der Eingang 

in das Schiff ist aus Sicherheitsgründen nur durch die ersten zwei Decks erlaubt. 

Tar 

After the Austro-Venetian war, Tar, 

together with other small feudal estates 

in Istria, such as Momjan, Završje, 

Kostanjica and Vižinada, fell under 

Venetian rule in 1508. This marked 

the beginning of the jurisdiction of the 

Novigrad Ppodesta. At that time, only 

18 families lived in the plague-ravaged 

town. To encourage people to resettle 

the area, the Venetian Senate relocated 

several families from the Zadar 

region to Tar. In the early 17th century, 

about 77% of landowners in Tar each 

owned 0.195 hectares of land, mostly 

covered in vineyards and olive groves. 

Olive growing was widespread in this 

area, as confirms the fact that as much 

as 41% of the land was covered in olive 

groves with vineyards. According 

to a book dedicated to the pastoral 

visitation of Giovanbattiste de Giudica, 

bishop of Poreč, Tar had a population 

of 260 in 1653. 

Ähnlich wie andere kleine feudale 

Landstriche in Istrien wie zum Beispiel 

Momjan, Završje, Kostanjice und 

Vižinada gehörte Tar, nach dem Krieg 

zwischen Österreich und der Republik 

Venedig, im Jahr 1508 zu Venedig, wodurch 

der Zeitabschnitt der Jurisdiktion 

des Podestats von Novigrad begann. 

Im Ort, der von der Pest verwüstet 

wurde, lebten damals nur achtzehn 

Familien und aus diesem Grund hatte 

der Senat von Venedig, um eine Neuansiedlung 

der Region zu fördern, in 

Tar ein paar Familien aus Zadar angesiedelt. 

Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts 

besaßen 77% der Grundeigentümer 

von Tar 0,195 Hektar Land oder halbe 

žurnade (2000 m2=5 žurnada=1 

hektar), und es handelte sich hierbei 

um Weinberge und Olivenhaine. Sogar 

41% der Landflächen waren Olivenhaine 

mit Weinbergen, was den verbreiteten 

Olivenanbau in der Region belegt. 

Aus dem Buch der pastoralen Visitationen 

des Bischofs Giovanbattiste del 

Giudice von Poreč aus dem Jahr 1653. 

erfahren wir, dass es in Tar in diesem 

Jahr 260 Einwohner gab.

The Law of the Cauldron Labin 

The year 1341 marks a special event in Labin’s 

past. That was the year Bertrand, the Patriarch 

of Aquileia, confirmed the town’s statute, written 

by its citizens. What makes this statute different 

from statutes of other towns in Istria is the part 

referring to the method of establishing guilt in 

severe offences. This is how the so-called Law 

of the Cauldron was applied: A cauldron full of 

water would be set over a fire built in the middle 

of the central nave of the Labin parish church. 

When the water began to boil, a small stone 

tied to a string would be thrown into cauldron, 

which was then removed from the fire. The accused 

was required to plunge his arm into the 

boiling water and retrieve the stone in three attempts. 

If he succeeded, a waxed glove was put 

on his hand and forearm, and he was taken to 

the town loggia where he would remain under 

guard for three days. The glove would then be 

removed in the presence of two judges. If there 

were no burns on the hand and forearm of the 

accused, he would be set free. If there were, he 

would be punished. 

Gesetz über den Kessel Labin 

Das Jahr 1341, aus der Vergangenheit, ist für Labin bezeichnend, 

als der Patriarch Bertrand sein Statut, welchen 

die Bürger selbst beschlossen hatten, bestätigt. 

Es unterschied sich im Wesentlichen nicht von anderen 

istrischen Statuten, mit Ausnahme des Teils, der sich auf 

die Schuldfeststellung bei schweren Straftaten bezieht. 

Es handelt sich hierbei um das so genannte „Gesetz über 

den Kessel“, welches in folgender Weise angewandt wurde: 

Ein Kessel voller Wasser wurde auf ein Feuer gestellt, 

welches in der Mitte des Mittelschiffs der Pfarrkirche in 

Labin angezündet wurde. Sobald das Wasser zu zukochen 

begann, wurde ein an einer Schnurr befestigter Stein in 

den Kessel geworfen und der Kessel von der Feuerstelle 

entfernt. Der Angeklagte musste dann seine Hand in das 

siedend heiße Wasser tauchen und in drei Versuchen den 

Stein herausziehen. Falls er darin Erfolg hatte, dann wurde 

seine Hand und sein Unterarm, in einen mit Wachs versetzten 

Handschuh gelegt und er wurde in die Stadtloggia 

geführt. Dort blieb er unter Aufsicht der Wachen drei Tage 

lang und danach wurde der versiegelte Handschuh, in 

Gegenwart von zwei Richtern, ausgezogen. Sofern die 

Hand und der Ellenbogen keine Brandwunden aufwiesen, 

wurde der Beschuldigte von aller Schuld freigesprochen 

und im umgekehrten Fall bestraft! 

Savudrija lighthouse 

Mystic and magnificent, alone on the rocks like some 

forgotten giants, lighthouses have always been a subject 

of fascination. Many of them are surrounded by 

numerous stories and myths that make them seem 

even more secretive. Savudrija lighthouse was built 

in 1818 and today is the oldest active lighthouse in 

the Adriatic, as well as the most northern in Croatia. 

This 36 metre high building is totally consistent with 

the mysterious atmosphere that has surrounded 

lighthouses for centuries - and this one also has a 

legend… Local stories often connect the Savudrija 

lighthouse with the sad story of the Austrian Count 

Metternich who apparently fell in love with a beautiful 

Croatian lady at a ball in Vienna. He built the lighthouse 

and the house beside it just for her. Unfortunately, 

fate cruelly saw to it that the Count’s chosen 

one died of a serious illness and she never saw the 

light at the lighthouse, the pledge of their love and 

their unused love nest. Totally in despair, Count Metternich 

decided never to visit the lighthouse again, 

and some people swear that still today in the empty 

rooms you can hear the footsteps of the desperate 

lover in search of his dearest... 

Der Leuchtturm Savudrija 

Mystisch und prächtig, einsam auf Riffen, wie 

vergessene Riesen, waren Leuchttürme seit jeher 

Gegenstand der Faszination. Der Leuchtturm 

Savudrija wurde 1818 errichtet und ist somit der 

älteste aktive Leuchtturm an der Adria, gleichzeitig 

auch der nördlichste im Gebiet Kroatiens. 

Das 36 m hohe Gebäude bleibt seiner mystischen 

Atmosphäre treu, die seit Jahrhunderten um den 

Leuchtturm kreist und eine eigene Legende hat… 

Lokale Geschichten, meist über den Leuchtturm 

Savudrija, verbinden eine traurige Liebe des österreichischen 

Grafen Metternich, der sich angeblich 

auf dem Wiener Opernball in eine wunderschöne 

kroatische Dame verliebt hat und nur 

für Sie den Leuchtturm und sein dazugehöriges 

Häuschen errichten ließ. Leider ließ das Schicksal 

die Auserwählte des Grafen an einer schweren 

Krankheit versterben, ohne das Licht des Leuchtturms 

jemals gesehen zu haben. Vollkommen verzweifelt 

entschied sich der Graf Metternich, den 

Leuchtturm nie wieder zu besuchen, und manche 

behaupten sogar, dass man heute noch durch 

die leeren Räume die Schritte des verzweifelten 

Verliebten hören kann, der seine Liebste sucht…

During this three-day hardcore punk 

festival, Pula is transformed into a European 

centre of sub-cultural events. 

The festival was first held in 1992 in 

the Austro-Hungarian fort Casoni Vecchi 

in Monteparadiso (today known as 

Vidikovac), where it was held every 

year (with the exception of 1994) until 

2001, when it changed venues. Now 

it is held on the grounds of the Karlo 

Rojc Cultural Centre. This year marks 

the festival’s 18th edition. Bringing together 

many bands from Croatia and 

other European countries, the festival 

has evolved into a major event on the 

hardcore punk music scene. In addition 

to providing good music, and an 

assortment of food and drinks, the 

festival is also an opportunity to buy 

old but eternal records and badges, 

and the CDs of visiting bands. Während 

des dreitägigen Festivals wird 

Pula zum Europäischen Zentrum 

subkultureller Veranstaltungen. Das

The magical sounds of organ music 

Bezaubernde Orgelklänge

Because of its size and complexity, and ability to 

produce a great variety of tones and harmonious 

sounds, the organ is a musical instrument that was 

embraced across all social layers. It was played in 

the Liturgy, as well as in concerts. Not every church 

possessed an organ, and where an organ did exist, 

it was a witness to a town’s economic power 

and level of culture. Churches with organs usually 

employed one or two professional musicians, choirmasters 

and organ players, thus fostering the development 

of music. For centuries, Istria has evolved 

within two ethnic circles: Romanic-Italian and Slavic- 

Croatian. Cultural values of both circles are a part 

of each Istrian denizen. So, when we speak about 

Istrian identities, we must be sure to use the plural 

form, not the singular. And when we look for Istrian 

identities, we must seek them on the Istrian coast, 

in the rolling hills of the inland, in urban oases and 

in secluded hamlets. Traces of Istrian identities are 

also hidden within churches, with each church being 

on the border between elite art and fork art. One 

of Istria’s identities is in its sacral architecture. By 

guarding its treasures - organs - Istria’s churches 

have helped to conserve cultural heritage across 

the peninsula. Orgeln sind aufgrund ihrer Größe, 

Komplexität, ihrer anpassungsfähigen Tonstärke 

und der harmonischen Klangfülle bei allen Gesellschaftsschichten 

gleich beliebt. Sie dienten zu liturgischen 

Zwecken aber auch für Konzerte. Nicht jede 

Kirche besaß eine und sie dienten zusätzlich als 

Beweis für die wirtschaftliche Macht und das kulturelle 

Niveau der Umgebung, in der es sie gab. Die 

Kirche, die eine Orgel besaß, stellte einen oder zwei 

Profimusiker, einen Kapellmeister und Orgelspieler 

bei sich an und beeinflusste somit die Entwicklung 

der musikalischen Kunst. Istrien entwickelte sich 

Jahrhunderte lang im Rahmen zweier ethnischen 

Kreise, dem römisch-italienischen und dem slawisch-kroatischen. 

Jeder istrische Einwohner trägt 

die Werte beider Kulturen in sich und daher sollte 

von der istrischen Identitäten im Plural gesprochen 

werden und suchen sollte man sie an der istrischen 

Küste, der hügligen Landschaft im Landesinneren, 

in den urbanen Oasen und in den versteckten Dörfern. 

Die Spuren der istrischen Identität verbergen 

sich innerhalb der Kirchen, wobei jede Kirche an 

einem Kreuzweg zwischen Elite- und Volkskunst 

stand. Ein Merkmal der istrischen Identität finden 

wir eben genau innerhalb ihrer religiösen Architektur. 

Der Orgel Schatz, welchen die Halbinsel Istrien 

versteckt, trug zur Erhaltung des kulturellen Erbes 

in ganz Istrien bei.

Taking place biennially in Poreč, 

the International Competition for 

Young Cellists Antonio Janigro 

brings together talented young 

cellists and their teachers. To 

facilitate the exchange of learning 

and teaching experiences, a 

seminar, lead by an international 

Board of Judges, is organized for 

all participants in the competition. 

The pupils of the Slavko Zlatić 

Elementary School of Music will 

perform a welcoming concert, 

and renowned cello virtuosos will 

perform in concert throughout 

the competition. The importance 

and international reputation of this 

competition is growing by the year, 

and it has received recognition 

from the European Union of Music 

Competitions for Youth, a European 

network dedicated to promoting, 

supporting and presenting 

European competitions for young 

musicians. As many as 97 contestants 

from 26 countries around 

the world participated in the last 

competition held in October 2008. 

Dieser einzigartige internationale 

Wettbewerb der Cellisten Antonio 

Janigro findet jedes zweite Jahr 

in Poreč statt und führt begabte 

jungen Cellisten und ihre Lehrer 

zusammen. Mit dem Ziel, Erfahrungen 

auszutauschen und die 

pädagogische Arbeit zu vertiefen, 

wird für alle Wettbewerbsteilnehmer 

ein Seminar organisiert, der 

von einer internationalen Jury geleitet 

wird. Im Rahmen des Wettbewerbs 

wird ein Willkommens- 

Konzert von den Schülern der 

Musikgrundschule Slavka Zlatić 

und Konzerte bekannter Cello- 

Virtuosen abgehalten. Dieser internationale 

Wettbewerb entwickelt 

sich jedes Jahr mehr und mehr 

und gewinnt vermehrt an internationalem 

Ansehen und ist bereits 

von der Europäischen Union of 

Music Competitions for Youth, einem 

Europäisches Netzwerk, das 

den europäischen Wettbewerb 

junger Musiker fördert, unterstützt 

und vertritt, anerkannt worden. 

Beim letzten Wettbewerb, der im 

Oktober 2008 statt gefunden hatte, 

nahmen 97 Wettbewerbsteilnehmer 

aus 26 Ländern teil.

Istrian Lopica 

A peculiarity of Istrian 

popular architecture in 

the Baroque is the lopica 

- a roofed portico, open on 

three sides supported by 

columns. Sometimes the 

hipped roof of the portico is 

supported by statues of angels 

such as in the Church 

of St. Mary near Žminj. Such 

space added onto smaller 

medieval churches, served 

for the congregation and 

its architecture is similar to 

that of Istrian loggias. The 

added lopica can be seen at 

a number of small churches 

in the peninsula and we 

may say that they are one 

of the trademarks of local 

Istrian sacral architecture.

alten mittelalterlichen Kirchen 

zugebauten und den 

istrischen Stadtlogen ähnlichen 

Räumen, versammelten 

sich Gläubige. Beispiele 

dieser Architektur sind in 

vielen Örtchen der istrischen 

Halbinsel zu sehen. 

The church and monastery of St. 

Francis are associated with the memory and 

honor of Blessed Otto, the best known and the 

most famous son of this Franciscan monastery. 

Owing to the life and activities of Blessed Otto, 

as well as his co-friars in the monastery, the entire 

city became fond of the Friars Minor. The administrators 

of the time, from the reputable and 

powerful Castropola familiy (end of the 13th c.) 

distinguished themselves particularly towards the 

Franciscans in Pula. Today the church stands as a 

Romanesque edifice with beginnings of the Gothic 

style in all the Franciscan simplicity and modesty, 

as a masterpiece in stone. The church is 12.50 m 

wide, 16 m high and 45 m long. Beside the church 

there stands a two-storied monastery built in the 

Romanesque style. Each of the columns in the 

charming cloister on the second floor is of different 

shape, while those on the ground floor are 

identical. The church facade is remarkable for its 

entrance made of Greek marble and a marvellous 

rose window. The magnificent Gothic presbytery 

with arches stands out in the church interior. However, 

the best known work of art in this church is 

the famous wooden polyptych behind the main 

altar. This masterpiece made of wood dates from

Die Kirche und das Kloster des Hl. 

Franziskus in Pula verbindet man mit der Erinnerung 

und Verehrung des seligen Otto, des bekanntesten 

und ruhmreichsten Sohnes des Franziskaner Klosters 

in Pula. Das Leben und das Wirken des seligen Otto 

und das seiner Mitbürger im Kloster waren der Anlass, 

das die ganze Stadt diese Brüder liebte. Besonders 

großzügig zeigte sich der Verwalter aus der angesehenen 

und mächtigen Familie Castropola (Ende des 13. 

Jahrhunderts) gegenüber den Franziskanern in Pula. So 

haben wir hier eine romanische Kirche mit Andeutungen 

der Gotik in aller ihrer franziskanischen Einfachheit 

und Bescheidenheit als ein künstlerisches Meisterwerk 

aus gemeißeltem Stein. Die Kirche ist 12,5 Meter breit, 

16 Meter hoch und 45 Meter lang. Neben der Kirche 

befindet sich das zweigeschoßige Kloster im romanischen 

Stil. Jede der Säulen in der reizvollen Kreuzgang 

hat im oberen Teil eine besondere Form, während sie 

im Erdgeschoß alle gleich sind. Die Fassade der Kirche 

hebt sich durch ihren Eingang aus griechischem Marmor 

und die wunderschöne Rosette hervor. In der Kirche 

beeindruckt besonders das bezaubernde gotische 

Presbyterium mit den bekannten Bögen. Doch das bekannteste 

Kunstwerk in dieser Kirche ist auf jeden Fall 

das Polyptichon aus Holz hinter dem Hauptaltar. Dieses 

Kunstwerk entsandt am Beginn des 15, Jahrhunderts 

und ist reine Gotik.

Centuries-old architectural heritage is fused with 

contemporary artistic expression in the gallery 

rooms, decorated with stucco and frescoes, housed 

in the Istrian Parliament located in the old town of 

Poreč. The thematic character of the Annale Exhibition 

focuses on modern and contemporary art with 

an impressive selection of Croatian and international 

visual artists. The exhibition features two macro categories 

- historical and contemporary - the aim of 

which is to portray the exhibition’s past, its evolution 

and its impact of the present. Through its existence, 

the Annale Exhibition has created an environment of 

distinctive artistic life, by interlacing the stories of the 

past and the present, stories that are permanently 

joined by the powerful yarn of art. Im Galerieraum 

mit barocken Stuckaturen und Fresken, im istrischen 

Landtag, der sich in der Altstadt von Poreč befindet, 

verschmilzt das jahrhundertealte architektonische 

Erbes mit dem modernen künstlerischen Ausdruck. 

Der thematische Charakter des Annale zeigt moderne 

und zeitgenössische Kunst in einer hochwertigen 

Auswahl an einheimischer und internationaler Kunst 

der Autoren. Die Ausstellung wird in zwei Makroabschnitte 

unterteilt werden: in den historischen und 

zeitgenössischen Abschnitt und soll den Besuchern 

die Vergangenheit des Annale sowie seine Entwicklung 

und seinen Einfluss auf die Gegenwart zeigen. 

Das Annale hat mit seiner Existenz und mit der Verknüpfung 

von der Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart, 

eine Umgebung des erkennbar künstlerischen Lebens 

geschaffen, welche ständig mit einer starken 

künstlerischen Linie verbunden ist.

In the 10th and 11th centuries the Pazin Castle was 

a small fortress, but the appearance of fire-arms 

and new warfare called for constant alterations and 

reconstructions until the 18th century. The castle 

could be reached by a drawbridge over a moat that 

was filled up in the 19th century. From the 7th to 

the 14th of August Pazin Castle will host the Seven 

Days of Creation, a festival which main theme is 

SVEjednoISTRA - ALLtogetherISTRIA. This is a project 

which will present a wide range of cultural activities. 

Within the framework of the festival visitors will 

have the opportunity to participate in workshops, 

art colonies, lectures, debates, Festival of SF Literature 

and attend exhibitions 

of works by young and already 

renowned artists, concerts and 

performances. Im 10. und 11. Jh.

St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church 

was built at the end of the 15th 

century, and renovated in the second 

half of the 18th and the first 

half of the 19th century. With its 

Classicist façade, it is an example 

of a hall church with one nave, 

characteristic for Venetian Istria in 

the second half of the settecento. 

Next to the church, a small cloister 

once stood, which was first Dominican 

(15th - 17th c.), then Augustinian 

(second half of the 17th c.) 

and finally Franciscan (mid-18th c.). 

Due to its poor state of repair, the 

church is closed for services.

Wedge-shaped clothes 

During the great migration of peoples, wedgeshaped 

clothing design spread across most of the 

European continent (from 6th-8th centuries). The 

Normans, Angles, and Saxons brought the wedge 

to Western Europe and the British Isles; the movement 

of the Langobards took from Eastern Europe 

to Northern Italy; and the Visigoths carried it all the 

way to Spain. As essential element, the wedge can 

also be found in the costume of Slavic peoples, 

namely the Czech, Moravians, and Russians, as well 

as Croatians. Wedge-shaped clothes, similar to those 

found in Istria, also appeared in the settlements of 

the Vikings in Greenland (11th-15th centuries). In 

the Middle Ages, especially after the Crusades, the 

wedge was adapted to accommodate wider clothing 

fabrics that were coming from the East, which 

required a new method of cutting and fabrication. 

The style made in this manner became representative 

of the upper classes, and almost forbidden for 

the lower classes. The most elegant of costumes, 

the so-called ‘Burgundian fashion’, appeared in the 

15th century, and marked the end of this particular 

style. During the Renaissance, wedge-shaped clothes 

were substituted for newer costumes consisting of 

a small waistcoat and seamed skirt. Wedge-shaped 

clothes remained present only as a folk costume in 

areas on the periphery of its earlier range of influence 

until the 19th and 20th centuries. This is why it 

can be found in Istria, in the south-west of Slovenia, 

Transylvania, Ukraine and Byelorussia, as well as in 

Scandinavia. Wedge-shaped clothes in Croatia act as 

irrefutable evidence for the presence of Croatians in 

the cultural patterns of the northwestern and central 

European area in the distant past. The Istrian samples, 

therefore, should be seen as a good example 

of how our traditional cultural heritage can be preserved 

trough time. 

Traditional clothes, Ethnographic Museum, Pazin 

Zwickel Gewand 

Während der großen Völkerwanderung erscheint der 

Zwickel im Gewand fast des ganzen europäischen 

Kontinents (6.-8. Jh.). Mit den Normanen, den Engländern 

und den Sachsen kommt der Zwickel nach 

Westeuropa und auf die britischen Inseln. Mit den 

Langobarden aus dem Osteuropa kommt er nach 

Norditalien, mit den Vizigoten kommt er nach Spanien. 

Als ein altes Element wurde der Zwickel bei den 

slawischen Völkern, bei den Tschechen, den Mähren, 

den Russen und auch bei den Kroaten festgestellt. 

Das Zwickelgewand, das sehr ähnlich dem istrischen 

ist, wurde in den wikingischen Siedlungen auf Grönland 

(11.-15. Jh.) festgestellt. Im späten Mittelalter, 

besonders nach den Kreuzzügen, passt sich der 

Zwickel den breiten östlichen Textilgeweben, denen 

Schlitze gemacht wurden, damit man in sie den Zwickel 

einsetzen konnte, an. So entstand ein besonderes 

Gewand, das für die obere Bevölkerungsschicht 

spezifisch und für die untere Bevölkerungsschicht 

verboten war. Die sogenannte ‚burgundische Mode‘ 

ist die stilvollste, die erschienen ist und mit ihr endet 

im späten 15. Jh. eine solche Bekleidungsart. In 

der Renaissance wurde der Zwickel durch die Bekleidung, 

die aus Leibchen und Faltenrock besteht, 

ersetzt. Der Zwickel wurde bis zum 19. und 20. Jh. 

bewahrt und das nur in der Volkstracht, auf der ‚Peripherie‘ 

seiner ehemaligen breiten Verbreitung. Die 

istrischen Beispiele zeigen eine seltene Beständigkeit 

in der Bewahrung des traditionellen Kulturschatzes 

durch Jahrhunderte.

The Festival of Old-Church Folk Singing will be held 

this year for the third time running to help preserve 

traditional music. The festival is part of the Summer 

of Culture held at Sveti Petar u Šumi and will feature 

the performances of church choirs, vocal groups 

and individual performers of folk church songs from 

various parts of Istria and Croatia, as well as from 

abroad. A number of other events, including an ethnomusicology 

symposium, will also be organised. 

Sveti Petar u Šumi is a town where old-church folk 

singers and enthusiasts are brought together, and 

whose people carefully safeguard their heritage.

Cooking the white truffle 

The truffle was introduced into Piedmontese 

cuisine through the House of Savoy (whose 

cooks were already experienced in the use 

of the black truffle). During the last century, 

the reputation of the Tuber magnatum spread 

throughout the world, winning over trend-setting 

chefs on every continent. 

Its voluptuous versatility, and unique ability 

to turn every dish into something extraordinary, 

have proved to be decisive factors in 

making this hypogean fungus so very special. 

The recipes employing truffles are inspired by 

this versatility, and by the fact that just a few 

grams are all it takes to transform dishes that 

have often not been designed for the truffle. A 

serving suggestion for savouring white truffle 

to the full is to shave it raw (using the special 

truffle-cutter) onto potentially neutral dishes, 

which make a perfect base for highlighting its 

wonderfully intense aroma. Perhaps the finest 

examples of dishes that show quite how astonishing 

white truffle can be are hand-minced 

raw veal, fried egg, tajarin pasta seasoned only 

with butter or oil, and fondue.

sich der Ruf der Tuber magnatum und sie eroberte 

weltweit die Küchen der besten Restaurants. 

Ihre Eigenschaft, jedem Gericht eine ganz 

besondere Note zu verleihen, machten diese 

hypogean fungus einmalig. Die verschiedenen 

Kochrezepte zeichnen sich durch ihre Vielseitigkeit 

aus, auch ohne dass Gerichte spezifisch 

für die Trüffel kreiert werden müssten. Am 

besten genießt man die weiße Trüffel roh: in 

dünne Lamellen mit dem speziellen Trüffelmesser 

geschnitten und kombiniert mit neutralen 

Gerichten, die eine ideale Basis darstellen, um 

den starken und intensiven Duft hervorzuheben. 

Etwa handgeschabtes Rohfleisch, Rührei, 

tajarin (mit Butter oder Öl zubereitete Teigwaren) 

oder Fondue. 

Trufflehunting 

Truffle-hunters “flush out” their precious quarry using specially-trained 

dogs which possess a very fine sense of smell. 

They must have a licence and pay an annual fee, and are 

only allowed to go out looking for truffles during the hunting 

season, which varies depending on the region and the 

species of Tuber. When the dog sniffs out a truffle in the 

woods, the hunter uses a special tool (called zappino - or 

little hoe - in the North, and vanghetto - or small spade - in 

Central Italy) to extract it with the greatest care. The soil is 

then replaced exactly as it was so that new rootlets can 

grow to form mycorrhizae, and finally a new fruiting body. 

Trüffelsuche 

Um eine Trüffel aufzuspüren, muss der Trüffelsucher (ausweis- 

und gebührenpflichtig), im Piemontesischen Dialekt 

trifolao genannt, einen speziell dressierten Hund mit besonders 

feinen Geruchssinn haben. Erlaubt ist die Suche 

nur während der für jede Region und jede Tubersorte unterschiedlichen 

Erntezeit. Nachdem der Spürhund die Trüffel 

entdeckt hat, gräbt der Trüffelsucher diese vorsichtig mit 

einer kleinen Hacke (zappino) aus und bringt anschließend 

die bewegten Erdschollen - um neue Keime zu ermöglichen 

- wieder behutsam an Ort und Stelle.

der Trüffel die Speise der Hexen sei, andere dachten 

es sei eine Tierart und wieder andere, dass es sich

Der Trüffel ist keine Knolle, Kartoffel und auch keine 

(stellen Sie sich vor!) Bodenkrankheit sondern ein 

symbiotischer Pilz. 

Es sind nicht die Schweine (man sagt sie seien nur 

schwer dressierbar), sondern Hunde, die zur Trüffelsuche 

eingesetzt werden (typische Tabus). 

Den weißen Trüffel kann man nicht das ganze Jahr 

über finden, sondern ausschließlich im Zeitraum 

von September bis Januar. 

Trüffel können auch tagsüber gesucht werden. Die 

Behauptung ist falsch, dass man sie nur während 

der Nacht suchen kann.

Without question, one of the 

most important specialties of 

traditional Istrian cuisine is pork. 

Slaughtering and butchering the 

pig was a ceremonious ritual in 

rural households, yielding ten to 

fifteen products to be enjoyed for 

weeks or months. Today, fewer 

pork products are prepared with 

the most important being the pork 

thick neck (zarebnjak, ombolo or 

žlomprt), sausage (kobasice) and 

streaked bacon (panceta). Pork 

thick neck is commonly known as 

Zarebnjak, ombolo or žlomprt. The 

meat is separated from the bone

Eine der bedeutendsten Charakteristiken 

der traditionellen Gastronomie 

Istriens ist in jedem Fall die Hausschlachtung 

und Verarbeitung von 

Schweinefleisch auf den Dörfern. Nach 

der fast zeremoniell anmutenden 

Schlachtung erzeugte man an die zehn 

bis fünfzehn traditionellen Erzeugnisse, 

die man dann wochen- oder gar monatelang 

genießen konnte. Heute sind 

diese Spezialitäten seltener zu finden 

als früher aber Schweinskarree, Würste 

und Schinkenspeck werden noch heute 

in hohen Mengen verzehrt. Karee ist in 

vielen Teilen Istriens unter anderen Namen 

bekannt. Das Fleisch wird in einem 

Stück vom Knochen gelöst und danach 

mit Salz, grob gemahlenem Pfeffer und 

zerkleinerten Lorbeerblättern eingerieben. 

Das auf diese Weise zubereitete 

Fleisch wird zwei bis drei Wochen getrocknet. 

Man serviert es in Scheiben 

geschnitten, als kalten Aufschnitt oder 

man brät es auf dem Rost oder mit wenig 

Olivenöl in der Pfanne. 

Istrian sausages 

(kobasice) 

Istrian sausages are made from 

choice pork meat spiced with a 

mixture of salt, pepper and wine, 

in which are boiled few bulbs 

of garlic, a pair of laurel leaves 

and a small branch of rosemary. 

The liquid poured over the meat 

which is then well mixed and 

stuffed into sausage casings. 

The sausages are dried for fifteen 

days and normally prepared on 

the grill, boiled with cabbage, 

broiled with eggs or, when sufficiently 

dry, served “raw”. 

Istrische Würste 

werden aus gewählten Fleischstücken 

zubereitet. Sie werden 

mit einer Mischung aus Salz, 

Pfeffer und Wein, in dem einige 

Zehen Knoblauch, einige Lorbeerblätter 

und etwas Rosmarin 

aufgekocht wurden, gewürzt. 

Diese Flüssigkeit wird zunächst 

durchgesiebt und dann über 

das Fleisch gegeben. Die Masse 

wird danach gut umgerührt und 

anschließend in Schweinsdarm 

gefüllt. Die Würste werden etwa 

fünfzehn Tage getrocknet. Sie 

werden in unterschiedlichster 

Weise zubereitet: gegrillt, mit 

Kraut gekocht oder zu Eiern. 

Wenn sie gut getrocknet sind, 

werden sie auch roh verzehrt. 

The streaked bacon 

Panceta - streaked bacon is traditionally 

made the same day the 

pig is slaughtered. The distinction 

between streaked and back bacon 

would be made with an incision 

at the hips. The streaked bacon is 

rubbed with salt, ground pepper 

and finely crumbled laurel leaves 

before drying for about fifteen 

days. In some areas of Istria it 

is dried as a slab, while in other 

areas it is rolled and tied or put 

in a thick casing to preserve its 

rolled form. 

Schinkenspeck 

wurde einst gleich am Schlachttag 

zubereitet. Zuerst wurde mit 

einem Einschnitt in der Lende der 

Schinkenspeck vom Speck bzw. 

dem Rückenstück getrennt. Danach 

wurde der Schinkenspeck 

mit Salz, zerdrückten Pfefferkörnern 

und fein gemahlenen 

Lorbeerblättern eingerieben und 

etwa fünfzehn Tage zum Trocknen 

aufgehängt. In einigen Gegenden 

Istriens wurde der Speck platt 

getrocknet, in anderen wurde er 

gebogen, zusammengerollt und 

mit einer dickeren Schnur gebunden 

oder auch in einen möglichst 

dicken Darm gefüllt, in dem er seine 

runde Form bewahrte (gerollter 

Speck).

Istrian gastronomy: 

The ascendancy of Venice 

The greatest impact on Istrian gastronomy 

was done by the Venetian 

gastronomy, which authority lasted in 

these areas almost for five centuries 

- until the year 1797. The Venetian cuisine 

was extremely creative and various, 

also due to the fact that condiments 

coming from all over the world 

were used. Nothing unusual for a rich 

State with a powerful fleet and intense 

worldwide commercial relations: from 

the Northern Europe until the Far East. 

Thanks to such articulated commercial 

relations, the stockfish from the 

Baltic countries and rare condiments 

coming from Asia were normally 

found on Venetian tables. There were 

fresh vegetables from the surrounding 

mouths, game from the inner lands, 

olive oil and wine from Istria and the 

scampi coming from the Kvarner bay 

as well. Of course, the same was in 

reverse. The western istrian coastal 

cities of that period (Koper and Poreč), 

by means of Venice came in touch 

with many new fares, the stockfish included, 

but they also learned to adopt 

the new condiments: the popper, the 

cinnamon, the nutmeg, the cloves 

and others. Considering that, at least 

in the beginning of the Serenissima, 

the fish in Venice was stigmatized as 

being popular or even poor people’s 

food - on the ways of preparing the 

fish and other sea fruits, it was possible 

to learn from the fishermen of 

Chioggia. On the contrary, those were 

bound to the istrian fishermen who 

were coming from the fishermen villages 

like Piran, Izola, Novigrad and 

Rovinj. There was also an exchange 

of knowledge in the preparation of 

the zuppa (dense soup), rižoto (rice) 

and buzara (sauce), from one side of 

the Adriatic, but also in that of burned 

crabs, stew made of shore crabs or 

common limpets, to the other. Such 

mutual imbuing has impacted the istrian 

coastal gastronomy until nowadays 

as well. 

Istrische Gastronomie: 

Der venetianische Eindruck 

Die istrische Küche übte im Folgenden ihrerseits 

einen starken Einfluss auf die venezianische Küche 

aus, unterstanden doch die Küstenregionen 

Venedig fast fünf Jahrhunderte lang, bis zum Jahr 

1797. Die venezianische Küche war besonders fantasiereich 

und vielfältig, konnte sie doch auf Nahrungsmittel 

aus vielen Teilen der Welt zurückgreifen. 

Das ist nicht erstaunlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass 

Venedig ein reicher Staat war, der über eine starke 

Handels- und Kriegsflotte verfügte, die wiederum 

die Entwicklung kaufmännischer Beziehungen mit 

der damals bekannten Welt ermöglichte: so wurde 

von Nordeuropa bis zum Nahen Osten Handel 

getrieben. Dank dieser Handelswege wurde auf 

venezianischen Tafeln Kabeljau aus den baltischen 

Ländern aufgetischt und die Speisen mit exotischen 

Gewürzen aus Asien verfeinert. Es gab frisches Gemüse 

von den benachbarten Inseln, Wild aus dem 

Hinterland, Olivenöl und Wein aus Istrien und Scampi 

aus der Kvarner Bucht. Der Austausch ging natürlich 

auch in die umgekehrte Richtung. Die Städte 

entlang der Westküste Istriens wie Kopar und Poreč 

wurden über Venedig mit vielen neuen Nahrungsmitteln 

beliefert wie z.B. Kabeljau. Auch lernten sie 

zahlreiche neue Gewürze und deren Verwendung 

kennen darunter Pfeffer, Zimt, Koriander, Kümmel, 

Muskat, Nelken und viele andere. In den Anfangszeiten 

der „Serenissima“ war für die Venezianer 

Fisch ein Alltagsessen, das gerade mal gut für die 

Armen war, weshalb man von den Fischern aus 

Chioggia mehr über die Zubereitung von Fischen 

und Meeresfrüchten lernen konnte als anderswo. 

Die wiederum hatten Beziehungen zu den istrischen 

Fischern in den Fischerorten wie Piran, Izola, Novigrad 

und Rovinj. So wurden an beiden Seiten der 

Adria Erfahrungen ausgetauscht zur Zubereitung 

der „Zuppa“ (dicke Suppe), des „Risotto“ und der 

„Buzzara“ aber auch wie man gebackene Krebse 

oder den „Brodetto“ aus italienischen Taschenkrebsen 

und Schüsselschnecken zubereitet. Den 

Einfluss dieses gegenseitigen Austauschs ist noch 

heute in der istrianischen Gastronomie entlang der 

Küste sichtbar.

Submarine world 

The local seas of Brijuni are important 

hatching grounds and 

representative oasis (marine 

park) for the typical marine organisms 

of the northern Adriatic, 

that is their colonies andcommunities. 

Of the marine organisms 

that are protected by the Law 

on Environmental Conservation 

in the waters of Brijuni you can 

find the pen-shell (Pinna nobilis) 

and the date-shell (Lithophaga 

lithophaga). Turtles and dolphins, 

the protected marine 

vertebrates, can also from time 

to time be seen in the waters 

of Brijuni. There are also some 

endemic species like the black 

tang, Jadranski bračić, and the 

tunicate, Jadranski ciganin. The 

seabed abounds in sponges, 

shellfish, sea urchins, crustaceans, 

fish etc. Among fish the 

most numerous are sea basses, 

giltheads, grey mullets, soles, 

groupers, conger eels, dentexes, 

black umbers… In the past in the 

seas of Brijuni were found some 

species that were never seen 

in the Adriatic, as well as some 

species up to then unknown to 

scientists like the soft coral Alcyonium 

brionense (Kuekenthal 

1906) or the variety of the 

sponge Ircinia variabilis fistulata 

(Syzmanski 1904). The waters 

of the national park of Brijuni 

are extraordinary for scuba diving, 

which is organised through 

guided groups of divers that can 

view and photograph the seabed 

of the national park.

Unterwasserwelt 

Das Seegebiet um die Brioni ist ein 

bedeutender Laichplatz für Fische 

und eine repräsentative Oase (Meerespark) 

für typische Meeresorganismen 

in der Nordadria, bzw. für ihre 

Ansammlungen und Gemeinschaften. 

Von den in der Unterwasserwelt 

von Brioni gesetzlich geschützten 

Meeresorganismen wurde die Existenz 

der Edlen Steckmuschel (Pinna 

nobilis) und der Bohrmuschel (Lithophaga 

lithophaga) festgestellt. Das 

Meer um Brioni wird gelegentlich 

auch von der Meeresschildkröte und 

Delphinen, als geschützte Meereswirbeltiere, 

aufgesucht. Es gibt zudem 

einige endemische Arten von 

Organismen, bspw. die Braunalge 

„Jadranski bračić“ oder das Manteltier 

„Jadranski ciganin“. Die Unterwasserwelt 

ist reich an unterschiedlichen 

Arten von Schwämmen, 

Krebstieren, Meeresigeln, Krebsen 

und Fischen. Von den Fischen sind 

am meisten der Seebarsch, die Goldbrasse, 

die Meeräsche, die Seezunge, 

der Drachenkopf, der Seeaal, die 

Zahnbrasse und die Meerrabe vertreten. 

In der Vergangenheit wurde 

im Meer um Brioni eine große Zahl 

von Arten entdeckt, die zum ersten 

Mal mit der Adria in Zusammenhang 

gebracht wurden. Hier wurden auch 

einige für die Wissenschaft neue Arten 

beschrieben, wie die „hörnerne“ 

Koralle Alcyonium brionense (Kuekenthal 

1906), oder eine Abart des 

Schwamms Ircinia variabilis fistulata 

(Szymanski, 1904). In den Gewässern 

des Nationalparks Brioni bestehen 

eine Menge Möglichkeiten für das 

autonome Tauchen, und zwar durch 

organisierte Führungen von Tauchergruppen, 

die die Unterwasserwelt 

des Nationalparks beobachten, 

fotografieren und filmen können.

Novigrad still preserves the beautiful 

authentic medieval structure. 

Amongst the excellent restaurants, 

the nice taverns (konobe) 

and the terraces on which it is 

possible to experience the authentic 

Mediterranean idleness, 

do not miss to break just for a 

while in the magical municipal 

loggia from where there is 

a magnificent view to the sea 

horizon and it’s possible to admire 

the facades of few beautiful 

houses built in gothic style and 

of residential palaces as for instance 

the Rigo palace from the 

year 1760. However, do not forget 

to pop over to the city walls and 

to the parish church of St. Mary, 

Maximilian and Pelagius which, in 

spite of being turned to baroque 

in the mid 18th century, on the 

inside preserves some Roman 

fragments, and even those from 

a basilica original from the late 

Christianity. During the archaeological 

researches made in 1895 

when, in the three naves crypt 

from the early Roman period, 

the only one and one of just few 

similar in the whole Croatia, were 

searched the fundaments of the 

basilica of the late Christianity, 

several fragments of liturgical 

furniture of the early medieval 

period have been found there, 

which are kept today in the collection 

at the municipal lapidary. 

Fulfilled with cognitions about 

the rich history of Novigrad and 

of the temporal layers immortalized 

by the artefacts of the sacral 

art, go further towards Antenal, 

the nearby village and over the 

inland through the picturesque 

villages of St. Dionysius and Serbani, 

to finally reach Karigador. 

Located at the northernmost part 

of the port of Dajla by the sea, 

the name Karigador takes origin 

from the Italian verb caricare, 

meaning loading, since once 

there was a port for the loading 

of oak tree trunks appointed to 

the Venetian arsenal, and later 

also for the exportation of agricultural 

products coming from 

the surroundings of Brtonigla. If 

you continue further along the 

track across Mareda, here you 

are back again in Novigrad.

Struktur. In der Stadt finden Sie exzellente Restaurants, 

Weinkeller und sympathische Terrassen, 

wo man sich dem süßen Nichtstun unter südlicher 

Sonne hingeben kann; lassen Sie sich nicht entgehen 

und besichtigen Sie auf jeden Fall die reizende 

Stadtloggia, von der sich eine phantastische Aussicht 

aufs Meer bietet und besichtigen Sie einige 

schöne gotische Häuser und Wohnpaläste wie zum 

Beispiel den Palast der Adelsfamilie Rigo aus dem 

Jahr 1760. Vergessen Sie natürlich die Stadtmauern 

nicht und die Pfarrkirche der Hl. Maria, des 

Hl. Maximilian und des Hl. Pelagius, die trotz der 

Tatsache, daß sie Mitte des 18. Jahrhundert im Barockstil 

umgebaut wurde, im Inneren die Fragmente 

einer romanischen und sogar die Fragmente einer 

altchristlichen Basilika bewahrt. Während der archäologischen 

Forschungen im Jahre 1895, als man 

nach den Fundamenten der altchristlichen Basilika 

in der dreischiffigen frühromanischen Krypta dieser 

Kirche forschte, die einzig in Istrien und einer 

der seltenen dieser Art in ganz Kroatien ist, fand 

man viele Fragmente frühchristlicher liturgischer 

Mobiliars, heute in der Sammlung des städtischen 

Lapidariums aufbewahrt. Diese schöne Landschaft 

und die reiche Geschichte in Novigrad entzücken 

alle Besucher; nun sind auch Sie beeindruckt durch 

zeitlose Schönheit, verewigt in Sakralkunst und 

können sich in Richtung Antenal aufmachen - einer 

benachbarten Ortschaft, dann über pittoreske 

Gehöfte Hl. Dionisius und Serban im Hinterland; 

fahren Sie zur Ferienanlage Karigador. Die Anlage 

ist am Ufer an der nördlichen Hafenseite Dajla gelegen, 

der Name Karigador stammt vom italienischen 

‚caricare’, was übersetzt ‚verladen’ bedeutet, da an 

dieser Stelle ein Hafen zum Verladen von Eichbaumstämmen 

war, die für das venezianische Arsenal 

bestimmt waren und später auch für den Export 

landwirtschaftlicher Produkte aus der Gegend von 

Brtonigla. Wenn Sie auf der Strecke weiter fahren, 

erreichen Sie über Mareda wieder Novigrad. Nun 

haben Sie Möglichkeit, einen einheimischen Wein 

zu probieren!

Speleo adventure 

Cave Radota Peć near Raspadalica (Buzet) is a 

classical example of a vertically placed speleological 

object. At the entrance the visitors are 

given an adequate equipment. The entrance is 

quite large and easily passable and after the first 

20m of climbing down and a pleasant temperature 

which is lower than the one outside the 

cave, climbers get into a big chamber which is 

25m high and 65 large. The path leads into another 

chamber which is even higher, 40m, and 

83m large. After this chamber, a speleological 

techniques have to be used - climbing down using 

a rope. This same technique has to be used 

in the two parts of the cave. It is completely safe 

to climb down when a speleologist is near you 

and the whole experience gives you a feeling of 

a real adventure, deep down in the kingdom of 

darkness. Maximum depth of the cave is 180m 

and participants can visit the first 70m because 

on 110m one needs another equipment and 

professional knowledge in order to visit the very 

bottom. The last part cannot be visited by the 

tourists. Speleological object Radotova Jama is 

the highest in Ćićarija and extremely rich with 

stalagmites, stalagtites and other ‘decorations’.

Speläoabenteuer 

Die Höhle Radota peć befindet sich in der Nähe von Raspadalica 

in der Nähe von Buzet und ist ein typisches 

Beispiel der senkrechten Senkung im Landesinnern. 

Der Erlebnisbesuch beinhaltet zuerst eine Einweisung 

über das Anlegen und die Handhabung der Ausrüstung 

für das Klettern; erst danach dürfen die Teilnehmer 

die Höhle betreten. Der Eingang ist genügend groß 

und wegsam und nach den ersten 20 Meter und dem 

erfischenden Temperaturwechsel kommt man in einem 

Raum von 25 Meter Höhe und 65 Meter Breite. 

Der Weg führt weiter zum zweiten Raum, der noch 

höher ist; 40 Meter hoch und 83 breit. Nach diesem 

Raum folgt die Senkung entlang der Schiefe mit der 

speläologischen Technik der Senkung am Seil. Diese 

Senkung erwartet die Teilnehmer an zwei Stellen mit 

professionellen Höhlenforschern ist dies völlig gefahrlos 

und bietet Ihnen ein Gefühl von Abenteur tief in das 

Reich der Finsternis. Die Höhle erreicht 180 Meter Tiefe 

während die Teilnehmer bis 70 Meter Tiefe erreichen, 

da es weiter nicht für Touristen geeignet ist. Die Höhle 

Radota peć ist die größte Höhle des Ćićarija- Gebirge 

und ist reich von Tropfsteinen. Dauer: 3 Stunden.
