Kölner Freiwilligen Tag
This year, various members of the School‘s faculty and staff participated
in the municipal initiative known as “Cologne Volunteers
Day” („Kölner FreiwilligenTag“). Some of the projects opened
to volunteer participation were specifically adapted to the
competence profile of these representatives from the University,
and the School’s Vice-Dean of Studies took responsibility for
coordinating the volunteers and the projects in her role as the
director of the Professional Center. The Dean’s Office as well as
some WiSo Centers seek to promote this initiative even further
by offering their staff a day off work in return for their participation
in future volunteers days.
Initiative der CGS
Our doctoral school, the Cologne Graduate School (CGS), runs
the initiative “From High School to University?”. This project
aims to inform high school students from a non-academic background
about the opportunities and challenges of pursuing
higher academic education. The School’s CGS-Scholars visit
various high schools in Cologne and work together with students
there to overcome their inhibitions about continuing their
education at university. CGS-Scholars prepare the workshop
sessions, which focus on a range of topics, including choosing
a field of study, navigating the application and enrollment process
at a university, and reducing the cost of university studies
by identifying sources of financial support. In each session the
high school students work on one of these topics in small teams,
collecting information, analysing it and finally presenting it to
their classmates. Special emphasis is placed on dialogue between
the CGS-Scholars and the high school students, which
further encourages the open discussion of questions, problems
and concerns. Each project includes an excursion to the University
of Cologne. This direct exposure to the academic environment
enables the young students to gain a first-hand impression
of student life, to learn about the way lectures and seminars are
conducted, and to familiarise themselves with the different offices
and agencies they can turn to for further information.
Tutoren-Schulungen für FIB e.V.
In November 2011, the the School’s Center for Higher Education
Quality (CheQ) started to train tutors for participation in
the Student Forum for Integration and Education (FIB). In this
programme, students studying at the Bachelor and Master’s levels
visit local schools and offer coaching and support to pupils
with an immigrant background who need to improve their
academic performance. For the student volunteers, this work
brings concrete benefits, including strengthened organisational
capabilities, improved teamwork, and practice in giving guidance
to others. Further information on FIB can be found at
