Helen Cleary. Den besten Blick auf die Viermillionen-Hauptstadt
Griechenlands und die sie umschließenden Berge hat
man vom Gipfel des Lykabettos Hügels (278 M., auch mit
einer Zahnradbahn zu erreichen). Von seiner Aussichtsplattform
unter der byzantinischen Kapelle Agios Georgios genießt
man ein phantastisches Panorama auf die tiefer gelegene
Akropolis. An sonnenklaren Tagen weitet sich die Sicht zum
Hafen von Piräus am Saronischen Golf, über dessen türkisfarbenen
Gewässern unzählige Lichter funkeln.
Bei den Erdausschachtungen für
die neue Metrolinie sind über
50 000 verborgene Schätze entdeckt
worden, und nach umfassenden
Renovierungsarbeiten erstrahlt
Athen, das Juwel der Antike,
selbst in neuem Glanz.
Vor allem in der wunderschön restaurierten
“Plaka”, dem ältesten
und malerischsten Stadtviertel
unterhalb der Akropolis, mit seinen
engen, labyrinthischen Kopfsteinpflastergassen,
weißen Anaphi-Häusern,
Galerien, Museen,
Juwelier- und Volkskunstgeschäften
herrscht Beschaulichkeit und
Romantik.
Neue Fußgängerzonen verbinden
die steinernen Zeugen frühgriechischer
und römischer Zeit
miteinander: die Akropolis, u. a.
mit Parthenontempel, Niketempel,
Erechtheion, Propyläen, die
Agora, der antike Marktplatz, u.a.
mit dem Tempel des Hephaistos
und der Athena, Olympieion
(Tempel des Olympischen Zeus),
das römische Stadttor des Kaisers
Hadrian, das Dionysos-Theater
(die Geburtstätte des antiken
Dramas).
Nach solch einem Kulturmarathon
entspannt man sich am besten
im wiederbelebten Psirri-
Viertel, wo Gourmets, Liebhaber
traditioneller Musik und Nachteulen
auf ihre Kosten kommen.
Hier wird Athene, die Göttin der
Stadt, zur Königin der Nacht.
Nur wenige können dem Charme,
der Buntheit und der magi-
schen Anziehungskraft dieser
fünftausendjährigen Stadt widerstehen.

Athens - an Olympic Metamorphosis
Helen Cleary. The best view of the Greek capital and the
surrounding mountains is from the top of Lykabettos Hill (at 278
m., it is the city's highest point, but don't worry, there is a rack
railway). From a platform below the Byzantine chapel of Agios
Georgios you have a sweeping panorama of the Acropolis. On
a clear sunny day you can even see the harbour of Piraeus at the
Saronic Gulf, bathed in a sea of a thousand lights.
The civil works for the new Metro
line dug up more than 50, 000
hidden treasures; and following
major redevelopment, Athens
itself, the jewel of antiquity, has
polished up well.
“Plaka”, the oldest and prettiest
part of the city around the foot of
the Acropolis, has been spruced
up and invites you to stroll in
romantic, narrow winding
cobbled streets, admire the whitewashed
Anafi houses and visit
galleries, museums, jewellery
shops and souvenir stores.
New walkways unite the city's
important archaeological sites,
including the Acropolis complex
of temples: Parthenon, Nike,
Erechtheion and Propylaen, the
ancient market place of Agora
with the temple of Hephaistos and
Athena, the Olympion Temple of
Zeus, Hadrian's Arch and the
Theatre of Dionysos (the birthplace
of ancient drama).
The best place to relax after such
a cultural marathon is the
revamped Psirri district, where
gourmets, lovers of traditional
music and night owls come into
their own, and Athena, the queen
of the night, comes into the light.
Only few can resist the charm, the
colour and the allure of this fivethousand-year-old
city.
