The state of repair of the tooth, the periodontal prognosis and the esthetic potential all influence this interdisciplinary decision in light of today’s armamentarium. KONTROVERSEN IN DER PARODONTOLOGIE Konsequenzen für die Praxis Samstag, 19. 11. 2005 • 11.15 – 12.45 Uhr Prof. Dr. Maurizio Tonetti Born and raised in Genova, Italy, Maurizio Tonetti did his specialty training in Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Started a private practice limited to Periodontology and Implant Dentistry in Genova, Italy and moved to Berne Switzerland where he was active as assistant and then associate Professor in the Clinic for Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics directed by Prof Lang. In 1999 he became Head of the Department of Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute and Hospital, University College London. There he established a premier specialist training program in Periodontology and a strong research activity. After 5 year of tenure he moved to the United States and currently serves as the Head of the Department of Oral Health and Diagnostic Sciences and Chair of the Division of Periodontology at the School of Dental Medicine of University of Connecticut, one of the top 3 American dental schools. He is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. Has published more than 100 original scientific articles and is credited with significant changes in the scientific understanding and clinical management of periodontitis. GTR – Verfahren versus traditionelle chirurgische Behandlung bei intraossären Defekten There is considerable evidence that regenerative surgery brings significant added benefits in terms of increase in tooth support, resolution of deep pockets associated with intrabony defects and change in tooth prognosis. This presentation will focus on a systematic assessment of the evidence base of these statements but will also cover the practical implications arising from this knowledge. Focus will be on the decision making strategies to achieve optimal results and high levels of predictability. Finally the current knowledge related to the relative performance of teeth with regenerated ligmanent and an implant based alternative will be discussed. 23
