2007 lebten 1,76
Millionen Menschen in Hamburg.
Hamburg – gateway to the world
As the hub of trade in Europe, Hamburg has benefited from the global economic boom in the past years. The city
is home to Europe’s second largest container port, which is why several logistics and trading companies are based
there. Other industries include modern company-related services in the technology and media sector as well as
in aviation. As about half of the nationwide press output is produced in Hamburg, the city is considered Germany’s
media capital.
Hamburg’s GDP rose 14.3 % between 2000 and 2005. During the same period the increase for Germany overall
was 8.8 %. Hamburg’s demographic development was equally positive: due to inward migration the population
has grown continuously since 2000. In 2007, 1.76 million people lived in Hamburg. By 2040, Hamburg’s population
is expected to exceed two million. Young people in particular are increasingly moving to the city, preferring flats in
central locations where demand is strong and prices are high.
