Dear Reader, Improving the energy efficiency of buildings is more important today than ever. This need is driven not only by high energy prices but by the need to reduce the building’s impact on its environment. This impact can reach far beyond its walls, and not least through its energy consumption which can, for example, result in undesirable carbon dioxide and mercury emissions from coal-fired plants. But this goal of increased efficiency is countered by the need to provide a comfortable and healthy interior environment for the buildings’ occupants. It is easy to provide an energy-efficient building that is unhealthy, or one that is comfortable but which requires major amounts of energy; it is far less easy to attain both goals simultaneously. To this end building organizations including the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB); the Dutch, Polish, Romania and UK Green Building Councils; GBC Italia and GBC España have produced and use education and rating systems for sustainable buildings, buildings that are both energy-efficient and healthy. These systems define measures for achieving energy-efficiency that go beyond the basic levels established by ASHRAE standards 90.1 and 100. A key part of those measures is the integration of various building systems, including but not at all limited to the HVAC and lighting systems. This is where BACnet will have an increasing role in the construction and operation of sustainable buildings. Having a common protocol used by the various building systems not only simplifies but encourages the integration of those systems, to maintain occupant health and comfort while reducing the building’s energy consumption to the minimum necessary to sustain that health and comfort. But even more than that, having a unified building automation system will also simplify the addition of future devices and future strategies, even those provided by manufacturers not represented in the initial installation. The future of sustainable, healthy, comfortable and energy- efficient buildings lies with BACnet. And so to that end, the theme of this issue of the BACnet Europe Journal is “Energy Efficiency in BACnet Projects.” Enjoy reading the new BACnet Journal!
