bereits anfangs.
Ihre Sammlung umfasst Malerei, Fotografien
und Skulpturen. Mitte der 80er Jahre haben Sie
angefangen, deutsche Nachkriegskunst zu sammeln.
Welchen Zugang hatten Sie?
Herz sprechen. Das geht nicht. Ich möchte gern junge
Künstler begleiten, wenn sie mich ansprechen, wenn
sie wirklich meine Seele berühren.
each other – the sense of smell, of taste, but also of
sight and hearing. With this long and narrow property
we had no other choice but to do this from the street.
You have to go to the back of the building to look at
the art, and as you return you might wind up staying
to drink a beer – perhaps even on the way in.
Your collection has paintings, photography and
sculpture. In the middle of the 80s you started
to collect post-bellum German art. How did you
approach art?
I had already had considerable contact with art,
although initially I didn’t have the financial resources
that would allow me to collect it. When that began
to change at the beginning of the 0s, I was at first
attracted to the art close to home, the art from North
Rhine-Westphalia. Georg Meistermann was one of
the first artists I collected. Thereafter the collection
developed dynamically – after the national came the
international art.
What is your opinion on the appreciation in the value
of art?
Collecting fine art always has something to do with
money, and anyone who says anything else is blind to
the facts. Once you have spent 5 years developing
an eye for quality, you can’t just turn it off and say:
let’s just let the heart do the talking. That’s not how
it works. I like to follow the development of young
artists who appeal to me, particularly when their
works touch me deeply.
