CAMEL TRECKING THRU THE DESERT OF LIMA
For several years now, extreme sports events are happening around the globe. Gone are bungeejumping
and free-climbing; the new trend sport is radical marathons on land or in water. From
December 9 th thru 14 th 2007 thirty top athletes from 18 countries including Germany met in the
UAE capital.
Four teams began their exciting and thrilling adventure tour through the emirate of Abu Dhabi
with the sound of a starting gun.
started with a two-day tour along the coastline of Abu Dhabi in a two-seater kayak. The extreme
athletes had to row for about 118 kilometers from Abu Dhabi City to Mirfa, a traditional coastal
town on the Arabian Gulf. The only overnight accommodation was one of five off-shore islands
on the Al Dhabela coast. The bus trip to Liwa was welcomed by the weary athletes and was
considered a much needed recuperation break. The following disciplines had to be completed in
the next stages: a marathon run through the dunes to Al Batin, followed the next day by camel
trekking in the eastern part of the Liwa oasis. The next stage was a bicycle trip from Hamim to
the picturesque village of Umm Azzimul.
The rest of the tour was spent cycling through the garden city of Al Ain, followed by climbing the
Jebel Hafit mountain. After six days, the teams arrived at the finish line at the historic Jahili Fort
in Al Ain, at the limit of their endurance but happy.
Team “Eurosport New Zealnad” hold off the competition to claim 88,000 US-Dollars prize purse.
The German team finished ninth. ←
