»Be totally yourself
when you are standing on the court«
The battle at the 2016 US Open changed everything
for Angelique Kerber. The young tennis star was
the first German player to climb to the top of the world
rankings for nearly 20 years. We talked to her about her
career and how the jet-set life affects her free time.

Even as a very young child, Angelique Kerber knew that she
wanted to become a successful tennis player. She was overwhelmed
when she was allowed to play in her first tournament alongside
tennis legends. Since then, Angelique has been able to establish
a routine before big matches, which helps her to concentrate on
what matters. »For example, shortly before a match I shut myself
away, listen to music and block out everything around me.« She
spends much of her free time absorbed in photography, for which
she can thank the privilege of being able to travel. Since travelling
so much means that she does not see her family and friends often,
she makes use of her time together with them differently from the
way she did in the past. »I have realised that, because we spend
so little time together, we make much better use of that time.«
But her heart belongs to the game, and she puts all her physical
strength into it. Angelique Kerber treasures the feeling of »pushing
yourself to the limit. It is unparalleled.«
