Dear Reader,
Editorial Editorial
Welcome to the fourth edition of the M2M journal. The signs are
still pointing to growth in the M2M market. Contrary to the general
trend, the M2M market grew in 2009, in fact by around 23% to
$10 billion, according to calculations by Beecham Research. We
expect that the industry will continue this trend with increased
vitality this year and in the following years.
We have dedicated this issue to a topic that is continually hotly
discussed and personally relevant to each of us, health. Against
the backdrop of an aging population, increasing cases of chronic
diseases and steadily increasing costs for health, society is
facing enormous challenges. In the U.S. alone, health spending
in 2009 amounted to 2 trillion $, according to expert estimates.
In Germany this amounted to € 263 million, approximately 10.5%
of Germany's GDP.
eHealth solutions, including the examples presented in this
journal, recover a substantial savings of several billion Euros,
according to a study conducted on behalf of the EU Commission.
What is crucial is that such technologies provide sick people and
their relatives with greater mobility and comfort, and even save
lives in case of an emergency. Therefore, decision makers should
give priority to conditions for rapid and wide application of this
technology.
We hope you enjoy reading.
