A third card, written in French by a
couple, translated by Miss Axtmann, a teacher
at Liverpool, read, "We wish you to have good
news of your son. We have had the pleasure of
making his acquaintance with one of his
friends. Last June for 10 days we had them in
our house. We would be happy to receive them
again in our home as good friends. Please give
him our invitation, if he is in France for his
next leave."
All three of the cards showed that the
persons writing them assumed that the sergeant
had succeeded in escaping from France. He was
apparently captured after leaving these persons,
for in December, through the Red Cross, came
notification that he was a war prisoner.
Seven of the 11 crew members of the
bomber, one of them a lieutenant-colonel, did
escape, for they returned to England. The other
four, including Sgt. Heimerman, were captured
sometime during their wanderings.
But the sergeant's first letter from the prison
camp, which arrived in January from Stalag
Luft III, main prisoner of war camp, does not
mention his adventures before being captured
