Achieving reliable scores in assessing writing<br />

Designing appropri<strong>at</strong>e r<strong>at</strong>ing scales to assess B2 written language performance is a first step<br />
to assuring reliability of results in assessing written language performance. Step two is the<br />
training for r<strong>at</strong>ers to reach a common <strong>und</strong>erstanding of the levels these descriptors describe.<br />
Fairness in a score on a writing test means the grade not being dependent on who corrects<br />
the script. R<strong>at</strong>ers must reach a common <strong>und</strong>erstanding of wh<strong>at</strong> is being assessed and be<br />
consistent in the grades they award. The seminar looks <strong>at</strong> issues in inter- and intra-r<strong>at</strong>er<br />
reliability.<br />

B) M<strong>at</strong>erials: books & course m<strong>at</strong>erial - suitable/good m<strong>at</strong>erials available, additional practice<br />
m<strong>at</strong>erials & internet, exam practice m<strong>at</strong>erials<br />
Purpose: to give participants an overview of the m<strong>at</strong>erials available and indic<strong>at</strong>ions of which<br />
are suitable for different target groups<br />
C) Approach: the skills tested, building up these skills, cross-curricular skills (e.g. English<br />
lessons and course prepar<strong>at</strong>ion)<br />
Purpose and Method: to give participants an insight into wh<strong>at</strong> is required from pupils with<br />
practical exercises to show how these skills can be built up and trained with workshops on<br />
various tasks<br />
D) Exam Techniques: wh<strong>at</strong> to w<strong>at</strong>ch out for, tips and tricks, wh<strong>at</strong> the examiners are looking<br />
for<br />
Purpose: to give teachers the backgro<strong>und</strong> for the final prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for each particular exam<br />
