The MLPSI ‘My European Language Portfolio’ was launched by Minister Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Education and Science, in Kildare Education Centre in November 2006. My ELP has many functions in the modern languages classroom. It is hoped it will motivate learners to improve their ability to communicate in different languages, to learn additional languages and to seek new intercultural experiences. It will incite and help learners to reflect on their objectives, their ways of learning and their success in language learning. Also, it will also help them plan their learning and learn autonomously, as well as enhance their plurilingual and intercultural experiences. My ELP also has a documentative and reporting function - it aims to document its holder's plurilingual language proficiency and experiences in other languages in a comprehensive, informative, transparent and reliable way. The instruments contained in My ELP help learners to take stock of the levels of competence they have reached in their learning of one or several languages in order to enable them to inform others in a detailed and internationally comparable manner. My ELP can be ordered from the Government Publications Office. Each My ELP costs 6 Euro and there is no charge for postage and packing. Links with Germany The German MLPSI team endeavours to offer German teachers the opportunity to link with foreign colleges. In September 2008, six German MLPSI schools hosted German teacher trainees sent by the Faculty of Education, University of Nürnberg (College of Higher Education and Teacher Training). As part of this project, the teacher trainee was hosted in the Irish primary school for three to four weeks. During the placement, the trainees were initially given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Irish curriculum, observe different classes and take part in the life of the school. They are then given the opportunity to join in the 5 th and 6 th class German classes and to teach German classes to different age groups in the school. This may involve language and culture, songs, games and special projects. University of Nürnberg student Manuela diFranca (centre) with her pupils Recently, the German team has been in contact with Educational Advisors at the Thüringer Institut für Lehrerfortbildung (Thüringer Teacher Support Services) in order to set up links between primary schools in Thueringen and MLPSI German schools in Ireland so that pen pal exchanges and job shadowing opportunities can be created.
Continual Professional Development German teachers involved in the MLPSI are invited to attend two CPD (Incareer) days a year. This Autumn’s CPD day will focus on Language Awareness and the Integration of the modern language and literacy & numeracy. This will take place in Education Centres in Dublin, Sligo, Cork and Limerick in November. All materials used on the day can be downloaded from the CPD section of the German page on www.mlpsi.ie . Many of the activities used are suitable for use in German Junior Cycle classes or can be adapted to suit Senior Cycle classes. MLPSI website The MLPSI website contains a wealth of information suitable for all language teachers. Of special interest to German teachers is a dedicated German page which is regularly updated with new resources, excellent weblinks and cultural items. On the ‘Primary/secondary page’, many ideas are highlighted as to how to set up language links between primary and post primary schools. Existing school projects are also described. The ICT & the ML page offers user friendly video tutorials on how to use free software packages for use in your modern languages classroom. Please take the time to browse the website www.mlpsi.ie . ‘Language Links’ – MLPSI online magazine Our magazine Language Links is published online twice a year and provides an opportunity for all involved in the Initiative to share their classroom practice and also gather new ideas to enhance their language teaching and learning. The magazine can also be used as an actual teaching resource. Suggestions for this are available on the relevant section of our website www.mlpsi.ie. Copies of previous issues are available to download. GDI Conference We are delighted to continue our fruitful collaboration with the GDI again this year by facilitating workshops at the GDI Conference of November 14 th , 2009.
