HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN ZUM 26. WINDHUND FESTIVAL DONAUESCHINGEN
IN THE BEGINNING
THERE WAS A DREAM...
...and since keen dreams are allowed, they sometimes come true.
26 years ago pioneers of the sighthound
family created an event in
Donaueschingen that meanwhile
has become famous the world over.
The two main names to mention
are Brigitte Schwab and Eckhard
Schritt – they are the ones whom
we owe this sighthound festival.
Sighthound owners from the whole
of Europe, from the USA, South
America, Australia, Russia and Africa
travel thousands of kilometers to
show their dogs – many of them
great winners – to top judges.
It is tradition that in Donaueschingen
the judges are internationally
highly renowned breed specialists
who have bred world famous dogs
themselves.
We are delighted that this year
again we have found a high quality
board that has not been working
together at one show before:
Ms Gael Morison (Atlantis Afghan
Hounds) from South Africa, Ms Karin
Juto Hedberg (Kashmanis Salukis)
from Sweden, Ms Evelyn Kirsch
(Ischyma Borzois) from Germany
and the gentlemen Jon Titus Steel
(Auroral Borzois), Aaron Todd Miller
(of Jomyr Whippets) and D. Scott
Pfeil (Wynsyr Afghan Hounds and
Salukis) fromthe USA, Mr Gabriel
Valdez (Da Vinci’s Italian Greyhounds)
from Brazil, Dr. Francis
McEvoy (Tirowen Irish Wolfhounds)
from Australia and last but not least
Mr Roger Stock (Courthill Whipets)
from Great Britain.
When we invited Roger Stock last
year to judge here he accepted with
great pleasure and said that judging
in Donaueschingen would be the
crowning highlight of his judging
career and would be his final judging
engagement. We wish Roger
Stock a pleasant judging retirement
in, hopefully, the best of health.
What is the secret of the success of
this Sighthound Festival?
The Sighthound Festival is more
than a show where you “go, unpack,
show your dog, and go home immediately”.
Over the years international
friendships have developed,
you meet friends that you only see
once a year, in Donaueschingen,
that brings enthusiasm, and you
meet new people who become
friends.
It is remarkable how easy-going
people are, almost as if on holiday.
Of course everyone is happy
when they win but they also don’t
begrudge their competitors their
success.
And, of course, the wonderful
grounds must be mentioned. The
showground within the baronial
park is unique and enables us to allow
for generously large rings where
the dogs can present themselves
in their beauty and their distinctive
movement. The ancient trees give
shade and the lawn is of golf course
quality. The grounds provide optimal
conditions for our event. The
fact that Donaueschingen is situated
at the historical spring of the
river Danube makes it unique.
From the very beginning the representatives
of the city of Donaueschingen,
the department for
culture and tourism, and also the
owner of these lovely grounds beside
the palace park, the baronial
family of Fürstenberg, have been reliable
partners of the German Sighthound
Breeding and Sports Association
(DWZRV). A great ‘THANK
YOU’ to all sponsors, patrons and
members of the team. Without you
an event of such a size would not
be possible.
Our special thanks go to you: all the
exhibitors, visitors and the judging
team. You are the people who have
been responsible for the success of
this event.
The passion for sighthounds that
we have in common is the centre of
the Sighthound Festival. And that is
the reason why we ask you to make
sure that the dogs are well cared
for at all times. Please provide them
with sufficient water and fresh air.
We love our dogs, they make our
lives worth living – and we should
show them that.
We wish you a memorable time
at the Sighthound Festival. We
will continue to pursue our aim to
promote international sighthound
friendship with great passion. With
you at our side we have taken another
step in this direction.
Let’s celebrate – let us spend an unforgettable
weekend together.
