JUDGES-REPORTS – SIGHTHOUND FESTIVAL DONAUESCHINGEN 2018
If you ever consider to go to the famous Sighthound
Festival in Donaueschingen, I better
give you a warning – it is strongly addictive !
The lovely old city with the well-known Fürstenberg
Brewery and the charming old houses,
the impressing surroundings of the large Black
Forest, the wonderful showground in the garden
of the Fürstenberg Castle, the huge rings
with green grass, the international judging panel
with sighthound specialists and the electric
atmosphere and enthusiasm at ringside,
makes you looking forward to the next years
show as soon as you pass the exit gate on your
way home.

"BOXADAN" KENNEL
In August 2007 I was judging at the wonderful
Sighthound Show in Donaueschingen with
800 entries, and where the outstanding Greyhound
Sobers Galathea went Best in Show. I
felt it was a ‘once in a lifetime experience’, and I
was therefore thrilled and excited, when I was
invited back to judge in 2018, which made it
a ‘twice in a lifetime experience’ in my career
as Sighthound judge. It was a really honour
for me to be a part of the 25 years anniversary
show, which had a record entry of 1630
sighthounds from 25 different countries to be
judged at the week-end. Who could expect
such an entry just a week before the World
Dog Show in the Netherlands? In some breeds,
the entry was even bigger in Donaueschingen
than in Amsterdam.
My husband and I was driving from Denmark
to the lovely old city with the well-known
Fürstenberg Brewery, the charming old houses
and the impressing surroundings of the large
Black Forest. We found the hotel and were
welcomed by Julie Hübner from the hard working
team, who organize this awesome show.
A great recognition must also go to Angelika
Heydrich, Oluf knauber, Claus Schütz and many
more ….
Everything is perfect at the Donaueschingen
Sighthound Festival, the wonderful showground
in the garden of the Fürstenberg
Castle, the huge rings with green grass, the
international judging panel with sighthound
specialists and the electric atmosphere and
enthusiasm at ringside. I understand, why the
exhibitors are looking forward to the next years
show as soon as they pass the exit gate on
their way home.
The first day I had the pleasure to judge Pharaoh
Hounds, Cirneco dell’Etna, Podenco Canario
and Italian Greyhound.
15 Pharaoh Hounds was entered and my winners
came from Russia. BOB went to Antefa’s
Xperia to Reedly Road, a lovely bitch bred in
Sweden and owned by Maria Evteeva from
Moscow. She also owned and bred the BOS,
the very handsome Ch. Reedly Road Lynway.
My BOB winner in Cirneco dell’Etna was a very
classic young dog, Belenus Benu Wai-Wad,
bred and owned by Jitka Kutlova from Germany
and BOS going to Swiss Lombardo Evodia,
bred and owned by Matteo Lombardo from
Swiss
In Podenco Canario, it was a young and very
feminine bitch, Devi, who went BOB and with
the dog Guayre-de-Gran-Tarajal going BOS,
both from Germany. In this breed I was very
happy to judge the famous multi-ch. Aniagua
and give her the Veteran Winner title. She is 10
years old now, but feminine all over and still
going strong.
I finished the day by judging 73 Italian Greyhound,
a great entry and overall of excellent
quality. The two champion classes was very
strong with top quality dogs from 7 different
countries, but I ended up with two absolutely
excellent young Italian Greyhounds from the
Intermediate class. BOB to the lovely bitch Zupetta
del Colle Folignato and BOS to the very
appealing Zucceroavelo del Colle Folignato. I
later found out, that they were littersister and
-brother, bred and owned by Simona Micarelli
from Italy.
In the afternoon I was very honoured to judge
the Best in Show, and placed a Saluki first. It
was the magnificent 3 years old champion
dog Yalameh Phil, bred by Barbara Weber and
Christine Schad in Germany and owned by F.
Dalla Costa from Italy. The handsome Saluki
was Supreme Best in Show next day for Sharon
Sakson, USA.
Next day I startet to judge 23 Galgo Espanol (
Spanish Greyhound ). It is a sighthound from
ancient times and one of the founders of the
well known Greyhound. Today, it is still used
for hunting in Spain. I gave BOB to a nice
feminine champion bitch with a lot of good
details, Macarena, owned by Pedro Delgado
from Lithuania, and BOS to Ch. Randeros Melquiades,
owned by Ursula Evje from Sweden.
My week-end ended with Afghan Hounds, and
I could not wish a better ending, than judging
my favorite breed. Ninety afghans was entered
from the very best breeders all over the world.
It’s such a long time ago, I have seen so many
afghans of such a top class quality, and it was
not easy to place the winners. More than 20
of the entered afghans could easily go Best of
Breed for me at another show.
The BOB came all the way from Australia, Ch.
Alaqadar Rigoletto is bred by Ada and Terrence
Wilcox and owned by Wayne Douglas and
Arnold Tan. He is a wonderful Afghan Hound,
correct and classic without exaggeration and
with outstanding movement. The following
week-end, he went Best in Show at the FCI
Euro Sighthound Show 2018 and BOB and BIG-
1 at the World Dog Show in Amsterdam.
All the way from Chile came my BOS, the lovely
feminine Ch. Luu-Luu Aswad Bint Benazir Von
Haussman. She is bred by Ramon Podesta, who
celebrated his 50 years anniversary for his extremely
successful kennel Von Haussman this
year. He was also breeder of my BOB-junior,
Muti Ebn Jaysito Von Haussman, who I later in
the afternoon placed as Best In Show-Junior at
the show.
It was indeed a memorable show, not only for
the extremely hot weather, but most of all for
the excellent quality of sighthounds and the
great sportsmanship and atmosphere around
the rings.
