JUDGES-REPORTS – SIGHTHOUND FESTIVAL DONAUESCHINGEN 2018
breed, you only like your winners as the quality
can go down very quickly but this time, it hound and if the quality was not on the level
My second breed of the day was the Deer-
DR. FRÉDERIC MAISON | FR
„DU GRAND CHIEN DE CULANN“ IRISH WOLFHOUNDS
was not the case and it’s a big chance to have of the IWs, the winners were really exceptional.
It’s always a great pleasure to go to Donaueschingen
every year at the beginning of August.
It sounds like the beginning of holidays.
I used to show there since many years, around
20 and I must say that it’s my favourite show,
not only because of the quality of the judges,
most often breed specialists but also because
of its particular ambience. Even if the competition
is very strong, most of the times it has the
level you can find in a world dog show, the atmosphere
around the ring is relaxing. It’s very
common to see people showing in shorts or
without shoes. Years after years, this event has
become one of the most important in Europe
for our breeds and we must thank Olaf Knauber
and the team – Angelika, Julie and may
more - for the big effort they have done to put
this show at this level. Donaueschingen is the
example every show organizer has to follow.
The first day, I had to judge my breed, Irish
Wolfhound and I must admit the quantity (42)
and the quality was there. Most often in this
many options for your judgment. My winner
in males was the young Olimpo Della Bassa
Pavese, beautiful and well balanced, in excellent
condition and which had the easy and active
movement required by the standard. My
reserve male was a high quality male O’Coolio
of First Avenue, one of the best males at the
moment. This dog has almost a perfect construction
and proportions and is a big winner,
but this day, he didn’t have the commanding
appearance and the good head carriage when
moving which is so important in our breed.
The CAC female and BOB went to Pitlochrys
Irish Fairytale, a wonderful specimen of the
breed with an amazing head, beautiful outline
and curves and easy movements. She is strong
but has the elegance and beauty I like to see
in females. The reserve was to another quality
female, a bit heavier in type, but in a really
top condition and with a lot of movement:
Karishma della Bassa Pavese. I have to
thank all these top winning breeders to have
shown under me. I really appreciate that.
The best male Kilbourne Kaine at
Oelmuehle is a tall and strong male with
perfect proportions and a beautiful outline. He
is not the best mover I have seen in this breed
but he can move very well for a dog of this size.
The winning female and BOB was Kilbourne O
sweet Lorraine to Oelmuehle, an outstanding
female of good size and substance built with
a lot of harmony. Her head is an example for
the breed. It was a great pleasure to see her
moving in my ring. Later on, at night, she won
the Eukanuba challenge for BIS winners under
a collegial jury of 9 judges!
My BOB Magyar Agar was Karkas von
Salomon Juliska, very promising young female
of excellent type.
The second day, I had the pleasure to judge
one of my favourite breeds - the Greyhound
and I was excited about the idea to judge these
46 dogs. To be honest, I was a little bit disappointed
by the quality as I expected more for a
show of this importance. I was surprised to see
Dr. Frederic Maison
so many dogs in poor condition, lacking muscles
and bones. A Greyhound is a muscular and
athletic breed and can never look like some
oriental breeds! Some other dogs were in good
condition and of high quality but the handling
was insufficient to put them up. My best male
Inas Fashion Blissfully Boughton is a very
nice and attractive male built with a lot of harmony,
in good condition. The very high temperature
of the day didn’t help him compare to
some dogs which had 10 Kg less but he was
able to move with the typical movement of the
breed. The BOB was the young Inas Fashion
Desirable, a really beautiful female of excellent
type, who made such a beautiful pair with
her handler. A delight for the eyes!
It has been a great honour to be part of this
event which is so important for the sighthound
world and I am looking forwards to come next
year …. As an exhibitor!
