„JET'S“ GREYHOUNDS
The Sighthound festival in Donaueschingen is a
one of a kind dog show. It is everything a dog
show should be about, but what they unfortunately
hardly ever are. The organizers, the DWZRV,
has managed to build up an outstanding event
year by year by sticking to the highest standards,
thus creating a unique tradition. By inviting experienced
and reputed sighthound specialist
judges from all over the world and with a show
site in one of the most beautiful parts of Europe,
easily accessible by car for people from all across
the Continent, Donaueschingen has developed
into the top sighthound show in the World.
This show has become the major gathering
point for breeders and exhibitors who wish to
keep up to date with their breeds. The entries
are remarkably international, and in many
breeds you will be able to see the top dogs in
their respective breeds from a large number of
countries competing together, enabling fanciers
to make direct comparisons that only this event
will offer. For breeders Donaueschingen offers
the opportunity to see what their fellow bree-
ders all over Europe and even further beyond
have produced over the last few years. Which
stud dogs are producing the qualities you are
seeking? Which strains have been successfully
combined? Truly the evaluation of breeding
stock - again what dogs shows should be about.
Not only are the numbers of dogs very impressive,
but so is the quality.
As for the individual dogs, I will refer to my written
critiques. I would rather add some general
comments.
Getting a number of the best Irish Wolfhounds
from some of the best breeders in several countries
together, I was truly impressed. There were
at least a dozen top quality gentle giants present,
making for an interesting day of judging.
Both BOB and BOS came from the della Parvese
kennels in Italy, but with a bitch from Pitlochry
in Holland very close on the heels of the BOBwinner.
In Deerhounds I thought that three dogs
stood out from the rest, all of particularly lovely
breed type and all bred by the Kilbourne kennel
in the UK. I was very impressed with the best
Sloughis, and as usual the very best dogs came
from the famous German Schuru-esch-Shrams
kennel – outstanding for correct breed type
with soundness and character. Azawaks were
rather mixed and varied quite a lot, but again
the best dogs were outstanding for type and
quality with the BOB coming all the way from
Finland. The one Chart Polski was a young, but
typical specimen of the breed.
I would like to add some comments about the
Silken Windhounds. I am sorry to say that I
thought these were generally a poor lot which
did not make much sense neither from a functional
or from a breed specific point of view. I
strongly question if this breed is actually ready
to be recognized and feel that the DWZRV
should have thought harder before doing so.
This being said, there were a couple of dogs that
made sense and to a degree fulfilled the requirements
of the breed standard.
On Sunday I had the pleasure of judging what in
my opinion was one of the very best group lineups
I have judged during my more than 30 years
in the middle of the ring, perhaps the very best.
Not only the four dogs that were placed, but
even those that were selected, but unplaced, I
am sure would win groups comfortably in lesser
competition.
The winner was the Irish Wolfhound bitch
Ch.Karisma della Bassa Parvese, a just about
perfect representative of her breed and sex, ideally
combining substance with quality, optimal
proportions and outline and excellent movement
from all directions. Second the Deerhound
bitch Kilbourne O Sweet Lorraine to Oelmühle,
another truly oustanding sighthound, excelling
in type, outline, construction and movement,
very hard to fault seriously. Third the lovely
Saluki bitch Gloria al Zahra, just teeming with
quality full of breed type and breed specific trait,
perfectly proportioned and a lovely mover, very
much in sync with her young handler. Fourth an
old favourite of mine, the Borzoi bitch Dasha von
Alshamina a lovely, femine representative of her
breed with just the right curves in just the right
places, beautiful head and bladed bone and
overall impressively balanced.
This line-up and the rest of the Donaueschingen
experience gave me a much needed boost
and a renewed faith in our sport. Long live
Donaueschingen!
