12 DAMPING.<br />

This setting is acted in the PILOT position. The ship may roll to some extent without going<br />

off-course. As a consequence of the rolling of the ship, the pilot may continue to steer, but<br />

with a constant change in the compass signal. Due to these repeated steering actions, there is<br />

chance that the ship may roll. With DAMPING, one can slow down the response time of the<br />

pilot in order to prevent unnecessary steering actions. If the DAMPING is set at the<br />

minimum level, the pilot will respond the fastest. In the maximum DAMPING position, the<br />

pilot will respond considerably more slowly. The damping of the <strong>Sigma</strong> <strong>550</strong> operating system<br />

also damps the indications on the <strong>Sigma</strong> 300.<br />

The damping on the <strong>Sigma</strong> 300 only changes the read-out and has no effect on the steering<br />

pattern of the pilot.<br />

13 TRIM.<br />

In the case of a consistent course fault (for example due to tide streams or due to wrongly<br />

placed loading) that is not corrected by an automatic TRIM, it may be corrected with the<br />

TRIM control system. With the TRIM, rudder can be set a few degrees off the centre so that<br />

the ship continues to move in a straight line. TRIM to the left results in a correction toward<br />

the port side. TRIM toward the right results in a correction toward the starboard. The TRIM<br />

control system can only be used in the position “R.O.T. PILOT”.<br />
