Abby Ackroyd, from
the Saturday Youth
Someone asked me the other day if our expansion had started
at the Club. Well, to be honest, if you did not approach the
Club from the right direction or go to the right part of
the building, you might be hard pressed to know. In fact, we
are well underway. Driving in from 14 Street North shows
the scope of activity and the amount of earth moving and
work that has been done from the edge of the tennis courts to
Nose Hill. A walk by the cafeteria and curling rink reveals the
excavation that has been done for the gymnasium and parts of
the club that will eventually reside above the curling rink. The
tennis access has come down to speed up the whole process.
Thanks for your patience to the members and staff from
curling and tennis who have already had to sacrifice because
of the construction. I can assure you that it will be well worth
it when all of the work is done.
If you haven’t checked the club website, we have started to
upload pictures of the construction activity for your review.
It is a great way to see what is happening in areas of the Club
that you cannot access. Watch for e-mail updates in the Club
Connections to alert members to areas of the Club that could
be affected by the construction. Our website is constantly
improving. Check out the new and improved GameTime that
is invaluable in assisting with the planning of all your
activities.
As summer approaches, we often tend to overlook the Club as
more time is spent outdoors. Don’t forget that we have many
activities through the summer months. Last year’s addition of
the Fun-Zone in the skating rink has been a huge success.
If your children have a summer birthday, why not bring them
up to this popular venue? It is a great place for a birthday
party. Last summer saw the main pool out of use for an
extended period. This year should see a much more
favourable schedule as we are expecting only a one-week
shutdown for maintenance in the Beach Pool. The
weather-man is predicting a nice, hot summer, so come up
and make use of the pool and patio area.
The Board will be busy throughout the summer months
working with management to keep the expansion moving
forward. We have also set up a committee to review food and
beverage chaired by Dale Johns. Thanks to all of those who
have volunteered their time to sit on this committee. The goal
is to work with this department to make the dining experience
first rate. Watch for revised summer hours at the 818 Bistro.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone at the Club a safe and
happy summer. If you are in town, be sure to drop by, as I’m
sure that you will be impressed by the activities that are
available. If you are travelling, get ready for a new and
improved fall session. I think that you will return to find a
Club that will be well into the expansion with the start of
some great facilities for us to share in the future.
See you at the Club!
Summer has finally arrived and along with it, what is
traditionally a quieter time at the Calgary Winter Club. As we
enter the summer months, I’d like to encourage you to
consider all that your Club has to offer throughout this
season. Whether you’re just stopping in for a refreshing dip
in the pool, or needing to find some activities to keep young
minds and bodies active through the summer holidays, the
Club is here to help. We have an extensive offering of
summer camps, clinics and classes for all ages and the entire
staff looks forward to continuing to serve you throughout the
summer.
As I write this note, I’m entering my 5th month as your CEO
and have already witnessed a great deal of change at the
Club. While I continue to work on evaluating and improving
our entire operation, construction has begun to take hold all
around us, and the expansion is now well under way. We’re
all excited to see new buildings and spaces take shape in the
coming months and we look forward to offering all of our
Members exciting new opportunities down the road.
Your Board of Directors continue to work with Club
Management to ensure that the Expansion project stays as
close to time-line and budget as possible; and so far, I am
happy to report that we are right on track. Along with the
Expansion, we are also taking a hard look at our Food and
Beverage operations, with the recent formation of our Food
and Beverage Committee. A number of talented and
experienced Club Members have agreed to join the
Committee and we are very excited about the opportunities
that this group is exploring; with an eye on enhancing and
improving the Food and Beverage offerings at the Club.
You’ll see some small changes in the coming months, with a
number of larger impacts planned to coincide with the
execution of the second phase of the Expansion Plan.
I truly enjoy the casual conversations that I have on a regular
basis with so many Members of the Club; please don’t
hesitate to stop me for a chat in the halls, or come by the
administration offices to share your thoughts and ideas.
On behalf of the entire Calgary Winter Club, I’d like to wish
you all the best for a safe, relaxing and rejuvenating summer.
Be sure to make the Club part of your summer plans, we’ll
be here to provide you with exceptional opportunities and
service throughout the summer season – come and enjoy your
Club all year long!
sea lions
The Sea Lions are now in the midst of a busy, travel-filled
schedule for their 50m season! While the little ones finished
off their season with a trip to Fernie and had a great time at
the year-end banquet at the end of May, the older swimmers
are still training right into July.
Parents are definitely doing lots of driving right now as we
are sending swimmers to Age Group Trials in Medicine Hat
and Age Group Provincials and Seniors in Fort McMurray.
All swimmers who can come are very excited to swim the
Missoula, Montana Meet in the 50m outdoor pool. We will
be sending at least one of our swimmers to Montreal to Age
Group Nationals at the end of July.
August will be a rest month for coaches, swimmers, and
parents. We would like to thank swimmers and coaches for
their hard work and dedication during our swim season and
look forward to seeing everyone in September.
If you are interested in joining the Sea Lions, do check us
under the Winter Club website and see what we are about.
Thinking about doing something different in September? Try
Masters Swimming for fitness, fun and travel! Seven CWC
Clippers attended the Alberta Masters Swimming Provincials
held in Medicine Hat on March 26 th and 27 th . The Clippers
clocked some excellent swim times plus enjoyed a 'Viva Las
Vegas' social evening where teams dressed up to add to the
fun. The Clippers also travelled to Montreal for Canadian
Masters Swimming Nationals, May 20 - 23. Go Clippers Go!
tsunamis
This year was a great success for the Tsunamis Club. At
provincials we placed third with many of our senior athletes
making the provincial team that competed at Nationals in
Vancouver on May 26 - 27. This year we also ran a
Lifesaving competition at the Calgary Winter Club that turned
out to be a huge success. We had almost 100 athletes compete
on five teams. This competition was such a huge success due
to the tremendous support we got from our volunteers.
The month began in Calgary at Provincials. The second
weekend saw the team helping our Club host the Wildrose
Update #5
Work has started in earnest on the project
now and it is very exciting to see hard hats and
excavation equipment. We have had to make
a short detour to tennis from squash until
the middle of June to help make up for some
delays that occurred with the late start to
spring in Calgary.
We have tried to be environmentally friendly
with the new path to tennis and used wood
chips from the old poplar trees that needed to
be cut down due to construction. There is a
flag person at the driveway while construction
vehicles are moving in the area and we have
placed umbrellas as you leave the building in
case of rain.
The reason the trees had to be removed was
to make way for a storm sewer that the city
requires that we install along 14th Street.
Expansion U pdatEs
The engineers indicated that the trenching,
required for the storm sewer, would extensively
destabilize the root ball for the trees. The result
would be that the trees could become unstable
and might blow over causing a very significant
safety problem. The City has also asked us to
install a sidewalk along 14th street requiring
additional space.
By the end of June construction and closure
in the top back parking lot will be complete.
But in July work will begin on the locker room
expansion closing the upper parking lot a
little further south for excavation of the space
required for lockers. We are hoping that we can
finish this work over the summer when fewer
members are utilizing the Club.
Let’s all join in congratulating Mackenzie Gault, our skater
of the month for March. Mackenzie comes to skating every
session with a positive attitude and ready to work. She keeps
focused in her practice time, and does extra off-ice training in
her free time. She has helped out the pros immensely this year
with the preschool and learn to skate classes. Her smiling face
c a l g a r y w i n t e r c l u b . c o m | J u n e . J u l y. A u g u s t 2 0 1 1
is infectious on the ice. Mackenzie’s work habits have not
gone unnoticed, many of her fellow skaters and parents have
commented on how dedicated she is to her self practice.
Mackenzie works hard to put together and perform well
prepared tests. Thank you for being such an inspiration to all
of our skaters
skater oF tHe montH - aPril
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Sawford for being April’s skater
of the month. Kaitlyn has just started taking private lessons in
our Junior program this season and has recently passed two
Skate Canada Tests. She is keen and eager to learn on and off
the ice. Kaitlyn’s on-ice confidence has improved greatly as
has her sureness of skating skills. She recently got her first
“program” with music and practices it diligently. Your hard
work and commitment has paid off. Keep up the great work!
i n t r o D u C i n g C a n s k at e t o t H e C w C
Beginning in the fall session, the CWC will be offering the CanSkate program instead of our regular Learn to
Skate program. You will not see a huge difference in the skills being taught in this skating program, however,
we must make you aware of this decision to move forward with a Skate Canada feeder program. The
following is a little about the program itself.
CanSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for beginners of all ages. When you sign up for
CanSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. You will earn badges and
other incentives as you learn fundamental skating skills. Lessons are given in a group format and led by an NCCP certified
professional coach. Professional coaches are assisted by trained Program Assistants. The coach to student ratio is a maximum
of 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of
activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada Skating
Programs, and is presented by BMO Financial Group, reflecting their commitment to grassroots development.
In order to participate in our Skate Canada CanSkate program every skater MUST be a Skate Canada Member. This
membership is an annual fee of $32 payable before you step on the ice. You will see this fee separate to the class fee.
Membership is good from September 1 st to August 31 st of the following year (September 1, 2011 - August 31, 2012).
To help the registration process run smoothly we have set up a conversion chart for you to refer to. You can find this below as
well as under the Schedules link in GameTime.
Skating Continued
CoaCHes tiP
During the break is a good time to listen to various types
of music and discover what you love or makes you want to
dance…then dance! Be as creative as you can on the floor and
bring back some moves that could possibly be developed on
the ice.
Have fun with your creative side and make up mini programs
with your jumps on the floor. If you are involved in a dance
program, all the better, let it inspire you!
Remember to air out your skating boots during the
time off as they need to breathe outside of the bag as
well as to help the leather soles from possibly
rotting. Also, check ahead of time to make sure they
fit you when you come back in the fall.
Enjoy your well deserved break!
Sincerely,
Power of the Plan! Recognizing the diversity of fitness levels
in each of us, we have honed the personal training program
to accommodate all individuals and groups. Most of us want
greater energy, to feel years younger, to become more athletic
for our recreational or sports pursuits, to look better; all of
this leads to simply getting as much out of life as possible.
Gone are the days of a great workout with minimal focus on
the future. Here is the progressive plan to take you from your
current fitness levels to your ultimate goal with workouts
focused on results. You will find yourself in a professional
relationship with your trainer which is incredibly supportive,
inspiring and fun. As your fitness levels improve you will
graduate to more challenging and diverse exercise plans.
With greater health and fitness you can live your best life.
In an effort to bring specialized training, congratulations to
the following trainers for completing the highly regarded
Medical Exercise Specialist workshop and are in the process
of completing the requirements for full certification: Tina
Hong, Darrin Horsman, Christine Lanoway, and Danny
Ngo.
This certification bridges the gap between the medical
professional (doctor, chiropractor, physiotherapist) and the
Professional Trainer. Once you are cleared to begin exercise
the MES trainer will help you improve your fitness levels
safely. Communication between the trainer and therapist is
paramount with regular and frequent exchange of information
to ensure you are progressing optimally.
To see if you are a candidate to train with one of our MES
trainers please talk to your therapist or if your treatment has
been completed you may book a complementary consultation
with the MES trainer whom will help you prudently move
forward with your fitness objectives.
exPloring tHe great outDoors tHis summer
With the summer at our doorsteps it’s time to reflect on how
you want to spend the long summer days. One of the possible
many summer activities is exploring the trails in and around
Canmore. Close to home and a great weekend or day event;
we are blessed with a plethora of trails catering to all fitness
levels. A few of my favorites are the following:
Old Goat Glacier Trail:
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 10 km return
Duration: 5 hours return
Access: from Canmore, travel south on Hwy 742
approx 15 km. Turn right just past the Spray Lakes
Ranger station and drive on the road which crosses
the 3 Sisters’ Dam, follow the road for about 2 km.
The trail is on the right hand side.
Buller Pass:
Difficulty: High
Distance: 13.2 km return
Duration: 6 hours return
Access: from Canmore, drive 34.7 km south on the
Smith-Dorrien-Spray Trail (Hwy 742) and turn right
into Buller Mountain Day Use area, 0.3 km past the
bridge over signed Buller Creek. The trailhead is
directly across the highway from the day use area.
Ribbon Creek Trail to Ribbon Falls:
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 16.4 km return
Duration: allow 6-7 hours
Access: go to Ribbon Creek day use area which is
located 22.8 km south of Hwy 1 on Hwy 40.
Before you set out on any hike ensure you are well prepared.
Have a map (Gem Trek Publishing makes a detailed map).
Be prepared for sudden changes in weather and ensure you
let others know where you are going and what time you are
expected back. Always hike with others. Have enough food
and water. Being well conditioned will help make the day
truly enjoyable. We invite you to book a complementary
consultation with a trainer to help you physically prepare for
your outing.
Alberta Open
The Alberta Open this year was hosted by the Edgemont
World Health Club. Attracting 159 of the best players from
all around the province, competition was always going to be
strong. Even though this is an adult event, our junior girls
provided us with our best results. Evelyn Moorhouse
continued her great form this season by comfortably
winning the ladies level 2 event. Hannah Treleaven also
Our internal junior championships is always an exciting
weekend, an opportunity for some of our younger players to
gain their first tournament experience and for some of our
more seasoned players the opportunity to sharpen their skills
just before nationals. After two hard days of matches the
eventual champions were crowned.
Junior Nationals
This year we hosted junior nationals at our Club, to describe
the event as a huge success would be putting it lightly. With
215 of the top juniors from all over Canada, their parents and
coaches all descending on our Club, things were bound to get
busy. With the help of an army of volunteers led by
tournament chair, Cam Treleaven, the tournament was
undoubtedly one of the finest held in many years. In addition
to the actual matches, we also staged a world class exhibition
featuring two time World Champion, David Palmer, and
up and coming world ranked #59, Zac Alexander, in front of
a sellout crowd. The pros put on a wonderful exhibition of
spellbinding squash.
25 juniors from our program played in the event. After four
long days of competition, standout results came from
Hannah Treleaven and Noel Heaton who both reached the
quarter finals of their respective draws before going down
to higher ranked players. Congratulations to all players who
took part and a massive thank you to all volunteers, in
particular Tournament Chair, Cam Treleaven; Tournament
Desk Coordinator, Cindy Roberts; and Transport
Coordinator, Tim Chick.

season report
CWC teams had another great year in the Calgary Interclub
Squash League. CWC fielded 15 teams (10 Men’s and 5
Ladies), an increase of two from last year, with a total of 91
regular players. The league runs at all the squash clubs in
the city, and is the biggest single adult league of any sport in
Calgary, with over 1000 players.
Winter Club teams had a less-than-stellar season on the
scoreboard, but were always good hosts in the 818 Bistro.
CWC placed only 5 of the 15 teams in the playoffs (top 4 in
each level).
Notable finishes were Men’s 2B who finished first in their
level for the second straight year and came second in the
playoff finals (captain John Beckel, Dustin Paisley, Alex
Paisley, Alex Moir, Colin Collard, Ian Jeffrey and
Murray Fraser), and Men’s 11 (captain Tom Dance,
Darrin Drall, Bill Fisher, Ray Crockett, Norm Badgley,
Martin Holysh and Wayne Gaskin) who came all the way
from a 4 th place regular-season finish to win the playoff
championships. Ladies 3 (captain Sharon Harms, Robyn
Benner, Patty Adamiak, Janice Eby and Gail Hannon) had
a great season as well, winning the playoff championships
in their level. The playoff finals were held April 16 th at the
World Health Edgemont Club followed by a great banquet
featuring the local band, The Rustic Brothers.
anna gorski | Aquatics Director
T H E C a l g a r y W i n T E r C l u b
aquatics Profiles
Over the last 20 years, Anna
Gorski has been involved in
pretty much everything to do
with the Aquatics Department
at the Calgary Winter Club.
When Anna joined the Club
in 1991 she was hired on as a
life guard and swim instructor.
Over the first four years she
worked extremely hard and
tried to learn as much as she
could. That is why in 1995, it
was no surprise that she was
promoted to the Assistant Aquatics Director position and
thus given additional responsibilities. The next eight years
for Anna were filled with teaching, working on enhancing
programming, and improving the overall member experience
in the Aquatics area. In 2003 Anna was promoted to her
current position of Aquatics Director.
Anna has had many accomplishments in her twenty years at
the Calgary Winter Club. Since she started we have expanded
from one deep pool to adding a second beach pool which
includes the super popular hot tub and lazy river. Anna has
also created two very popular programs; the Seal Pups and
Tsunami. The Seal Pups program now plays a fundamental
role in meeting the interests of our youngest members, and
teaching them necessary swimming skills. While the Tsunami
program focuses on teaching our youth and teen members
the skills they need to become qualified life guards. These
are just two of the many programs, that Calgary Winter Club
members have come to experience and enjoy over the years,
which Anna and her team have introduced.
Even though Anna has been here for twenty years, she
is always looking to the future and what can be done to
improve our level of service, facilities and programs that
are offered at the Club. Anna would like to see a third
pool to accommodate our growing competitive swimmers, a
water slide for the kids (and the adults who are still kids at
heart) and some extra studio space for our Aquatics classes.
Wishful thinking? With Anna’s determination you never know.
There are many reasons why Anna still enjoys her job after
twenty years. She loves the people that she works with
and feels very fortunate to be working in a field that is
all about recreation and fun! Over the many years that
Anna has been at the Club we have grown to new heights,
accomplished many new things, and seen Aquatics become
one of the most popular areas for member usage. If this is
any indication of what the next twenty years will be like we
are definitely in good hands when it comes to Aquatics and
Anna’s direction.
Freya Wensel | Assistant Aquatics Director
The Calgary Winter Club was
very fortunate, in 2005, to be
able to bring on Freya Wensel
as our Assistant Aquatics
Director. Freya came to us from
the VRRI pool in Calgary which
is a pool that works specifically
with special needs. Freya came
to the Club for many different
reasons, but the main factor
was her solid relationship
with Anna Gorski our current
Aquatics Director. Anna and
Freya have known each other, on a professional level, for a
number of years before they became a team here at the Club.
Freya also states that she, “really wanted a change and kept
hearing how awesome the Calgary Winter Club was,” so she
decided to make the move.
Since joining the Calgary Winter Club team, Freya has
accomplished a lot. Her main responsibility is training and
scheduling the life guards. As Freya says, “they are my
babies.” Freya has a very strong working relationship with
all of her life guards and feels this is one of the main reasons
why she enjoys her job as much as she does. Her mentoring
of the life guards can be directly attributed to the low
turnover rate seen in our life guarding department, which is
extremely rare and non-typical in the industry. One of Freya’s
most recent accomplishments is that she is implementing
the “High Five” program. This program teaches managers
and instructors a standard and effective way to work with
children. This gives staff members, at facilities such as the
Calgary Winter Club, the skills needed to be successful when
teaching and instructing kids.
There are many reasons why Freya enjoys her job, and sees
years of being part of our Aquatics Department in her future.
However, one of the biggest reasons is that the Club is very
understanding of her needs as a mother and parent. Anna
understands how important Freya’s son Joel is to her, and
she loves what the Calgary Winter Club has to offer him.
With all of these factors in place we can look forward to
many more successes in Aquatics, and fun with Freya, in the
years to come.
