Volunteer Appreciation Night
The 14th Annual Volunteer
Appreciation Night was held on
February 23rd, 2011 in the Panorama
Room. The theme this year was
“Escape to Hawaii.”
Thank you to everyone who
attended and participated in
this fun event!
Fitness – A Special Accomplishment
Some fantastic accomplishments happened mid-February
at the Alberta Special Olympics Winter Games held in
Leduc Alberta. A few very talented and competitive
young adults; Jan Kryzan, Carla Natland, and Christopher
Demchuck performed incredibly well. Jan and Carla helped
lead Floor Hockey Team Scorpions to a Bronze Medal at
the Games and Christopher placed third in his division
for the Slalom Skiing Event. On behalf of the Fitness Team
we want to let them know how proud we are of their
accomplishments. Great work Jan, Carla, and Christopher!
The Calgary Winter Club is proud to use FSC-certified paper
in the production of this newsletter, demonstrating our
commitment to the environment.

As I write this message, we may be getting our first taste of
spring. It has been a long, cold winter for our city and the
Club offers a welcome diversion to take our minds off of the
weather. Spring registration is in full swing with excellent
member response anticipated in all program areas. If you
have not yet signed up, check online to see if programs are
still available.
After what seemed like an eternity, our expansion is finally
underway. On February 14 th , we had our official sodturning
ceremony. The event was well attended by members,
construction partners, local politicians and our neighbours
from the Calgary Police Service. The theme of our past,
present and future makes me feel that we are on the road to
a successful expansion that will benefit our Club for years to
come.
You will certainly have noticed the early signs of change
around the facility. I would like to acknowledge all of the
Curlers who ended the season early so that we could start
with the initial stages of construction in the curling rink.
The fences around the east perimeter and the construction
trailer are two signs that work has started. As promised, we
intend to keep you fully updated with the expansion and how
it will affect different program areas.
I am grateful to Paul Pasutto, Garry Lamb and all of the
Construction Committee who have completed the initial
tender package for our expansion. I am pleased to report that
it was delivered on budget. We look forward to working
hard with all of our construction partners to achieve good
results on future tender packages.
Finance Chair Dan Halyk reported at the last Board meeting
that the Club is on solid financial footing. With the
expansion, there are some capital budget items that will be
fast-tracked to avoid work overlap and achieve savings.
Our management and the Finance committee have identified
these areas and are keeping a watchful eye on the Club’s
finances.
Your Board has been in discussions with management with
an eye to accelerating Phase Two and Three of the expansion.
This involves the food and beverage and banquet areas of the
Club. Preliminary discussions of a revised plan with
substantial cost savings and an earlier completion date are
underway. Stay tuned for future updates.
Our food and beverage survey was completed and the results
have been posted on the website. Thanks to all who
participated. As a result of this survey, we will be forming a
Food and Beverage sub-committee to assist with
improving the dining experience in all areas of the Club.
There will be Board and Management representation;
however, we would like to have four or five members
participate with this committee. Experience in the area would
be great, but is not necessary. Please watch for details in Club
Connections or contact our CEO, Kevin Boyles, if you
would like to participate.
As I mentioned in my last message, our Heritage Committee
has been formed with Deborah Eastwood as the
Chairperson. It is her goal to help preserve the history of the
Club for future generations. Please contact Deborah or
the club office if you would like to assist in this task.
I would like to say that if you haven’t attended a Volunteer
Appreciation Night at the Club, and you are a volunteer,
you owe it to yourself to come next year. On February 23 rd ,
we had over 200 members in attendance. It is a great
chance to meet fellow volunteers and sample some of the
culinary delights prepared by Chef Nancy and her team.
The Club lost a great volunteer this week with the passing of
longtime member Murray Copot. Murray personified
being a volunteer. We can all learn a lot from his lifetime of
giving. Someone mentioned to me that he was like a
grandfather to the Club. People like him make the Calgary
Winter Club a better place. Let’s follow his example.
See you at the Club!
SPring Program evaluation anD feeDbaCk on-line
Program instructors and Club Professionals would appreciate it if you could take
the time to fill out the Program Evaluation and Feedback form that is available on
the Calgary Winter Club’s website for all spring session programs. Hard copies of
the program evalution forms are available at the Sports Office or through Game
Time, under the “Schedules” tab. The feedback you provide is valuable for our
present programming and will help us to program more to your needs in the future.
Thank you for your time and input.
game time regiStration - neW verSion
The Calgary Winter Club has been working with GameTime (our registration &
court booking system providers) to improve registration for our members. Version
2 is replacing the current version with up to date technology and new features. We
anticipate that registration will be significantly improved and we will monitor the
upcoming summer registration and subsequent registrations closely to ensure that
the improvements are effective.
To that end, the registration section of GameTime will have a new look and more
options for members. This update allows us to provide options and features that
were not available in the first version for program and event registration.
The sport booking section to book courts for tennis, badminton & squash, bowling
lanes, curling ice and massage will remain the same.
Some new features include
• advanced search options to look for classes by age or day of the week
• options to change the view of the information that you see in the class listings
• view classes in a list, by the day, by the week or by the month
• advanced partner and team registration options
Additional new features will be added over the next few months as well.

Food Free Area
The childcare centre and coat room are Food Free Zones.
In order to keep the childcare safe for all children including
those with severe allergies, we need to keep the space
completely food free.
Please help us ensure the safety of all children by keeping
food out of the childcare or keeping it completely wrapped
and in a bag. If the childcare staff find food on the counters
that is not wrapped and in a bag they will dispose of it.
If your child has a severe allergy to any food or medicine
please make sure you let us know. If they have an Epi-pen we
have a special form you can complete to allow us to use it if
needed. If they do not have an Epi-pen, it is still important
to tell us as some of our classes include food and we need to
know to make the class safe for your child. All allergies can
be put into Game Time so that for any class your child is in,
the attendance sheet will show they have an allergy. Please
talk to Heather Mackie (Preschool Director) if your child has
any allergies.
Summer Skating CamP
We are excited to introduce our new collaborative summer
skating camp.
A few of the Calgary North Skating Clubs are joining forces
to create a school with all the perks needed to gain maximum
development for the athletes. The biggest being the
momentum the skaters give each other, having a full variety
of levels and ages working towards common goals. This
connection with other clubs allows us an open awareness of
the growth in the sport as a whole.
Dartfish software (video playback tool) harness lessons,
outdoor running track and proper off-ice studio with mirrors
and ballet bars are at our disposal. Stroking and spin classes
will be part of the daily training with theme days to add some
fun for the kids. There is adequate outdoor space for a picnic
lunch outside on their 45 min. lunch breaks. The summer
camp will take place at the Henry Viney (Renfrew) Arena
and will run throughout the month of July. A high/low test
day will take place near the end of the month. More concrete
dates and info to come.
We realize the venue is not as convenient as we are used to,
but the reasons for this change are all for progressive reasons.
We can understand the fear of change and the fear of the
unknown. We ask you to embrace this change and come with
us on this exciting journey. Just think about this... If nothing
ever changed, there’d be no butterflies.
Skater of tHe montH - DeCember: kiran fong
Kiran was out to practice during most of the Christmas
holidays. She is close to and determined to land a new double
jump. She not only practices all disciplines of skating, but also
participates in off-ice and competes at the STARSkate level in
both interpretive and free-skate events. Kiran is an excellent
role model and abides by all of the skating section rules; she
hands in her music in a timely manner and is dressed appropriately
for each session. Kiran is also a program assistant for our
Learn to Skate and preschool programs. Well done Kiran!
Skater of tHe montH - January: Zoe CaSCaDDen
Zoe is normally the first one onto the ice for the early morning
practices and often the last one off. Since the summer she has
passed her Junior Silver Skills and 3 dance tests. Zoe
continually works diligently on her Freeskate and Interpretive
programs as well as her dances and skills. She will be
competing at the STARSkate Championships in the
Introductory Interpretive event. Zoe just recently landed her
fist axel and is working hard towards her first double jump.
She also helps out as a program assistant on Saturdays. Thank
you for all of your hard work Zoe.
Skater of tHe montH - february: megan tuCker
Megan’s hard work has paid off after landing her axel in just a
short time. She continues to improve in all areas of her
skating with an eagerness to be on the ice on time and prepare
her program for upcoming competitions. She has progressed
in the quality of her practices as well as attentiveness in both
group and private lessons. Your passion for skating is shining
through, Megan. Keep up the great energy!
CoaCHeS tiP
Mental Practice goes a long way.
Using pen and paper to practice each segment of your routine,
along with mental imagery of key points to remember, help
prepare and organize thoughts into actions. Gradually
shifting from slow- to real time and then listing to your music
and visualizing the actual performance with your costume in
the performance venue. The key to positive thinking is taking
control of what you say to yourself. How we react to events is
largely a matter of choice. Practice being realistic with your
goals and supportive with your fellow skaters!
As we wind down our season, let’s take a minute to
remember just how far we have come this year. If you see
that someone has accomplished a huge feat – let them
know. Thank a friend for their help and support but most of
all thank your parents for getting you to and from the rink.
Without them, none if this would be possible. Hope to see
you all out this summer. ~ The CWC Skating Section
In this edition of the Club News we
will be highlighting a specific area
within the Expansion - the Youth and
Teen Rooms.
They have been designed as two
separate rooms, one for the youth
(ages 6-12) and one for the teens (ages
13-18), with an office for the Youth &
Teen Coordinator located between
the rooms with access to both. Amber
Wright, CWC Lifestyles Coordinator
interviewed the Youth and Teen
Committee, as well as individuals in
Expansion U pdatEs
that age category, in order to discuss
the ideal look and feel of the rooms.
The Teen Room will be designed to
have a funky café style atmosphere.
The use of low tables, cushions, and
bean bag chairs will help to create this
environment. This room will be used for
a variety of purposes which is why there
is no fixed furniture. In this area, Amber
and her team, will be programming
for a variety of activities such as movie
nights and video game competitions.
In addition, the space will be used as a
study hall and a general hang out. The
teens are presently working on creating
art work, with the help of a local artist
and CWC member, that will help to give
the new room their own personal touch.
The Monday doubles program will move from a league
format to a ladder protocol in September 2011. The basic
registration will continue to remain the same in that you will
be responsible to register with a partner. The professional
This will hopefully reduce the phone calls between partners,
eliminate no shows and void any contentious spare issues.
Well, here we are again nearing the end of another season. We
hosted our usual array of fall events including the Palmer,
Diamond and St Nick’s spiels. December and January
included the Kingsmith and the Juvenile/Bantam
Pre-playdown Spiel.
January made us all proud as a number of CWC teams
advanced through the various levels of playdowns.
The CWC season wrapped up with the various Club
Championships. Thanks to all the curlers for their patience in
working within the time constraints we faced due to the ice
coming out so early this season. The Club Championships
were followed by the City Championships at The Glencoe
It was another great season. Now it’s to get outside and enjoy
Masters
On Saturday, January 29, 2011, the Clippers co-hosted with
the Foothills Masters Swim Club, a Masters Swim Meet at the
CWC. 85 swimmers from across Alberta competed. The
Clippers had a fine turn out of 14 swimmers that included
first time racers to vets. The results showed the Clippers
unofficially scored the most points! The Sea Lion
swimmers and parents provided the majority of the officials
for the meet. It was a lot of fun to hear the Sea Lion
swimmers express colourful, coaching comments to their own
parents during the races.
We then hosted a lovely meal in the Skyline Room for 50
people. This gave us the opportunity to socialize with our
own team mates and other swimmers from the visiting teams.
Many of the visiting Masters commented on how well the
meet was organized and how much fun they had!
Thank you to the Sea Lions Swim Club, the CWC Aquatic
sea sprites
This year, the Sea Sprites first competition, the Michelle
Cameron Invitational, was a routine-only meet (no figures),
located in Lethbridge. This allowed all of our competitive
athletes to go to the same meet for the only time this year. It
was inspiring for the younger swimmers to watch how
fantastic and accomplished their older teammates are! The
older swimmers in turn did a great job encouraging and
supporting their younger teammates.
Our PAC teams had an awesome showing! Many of these
athletes were competing for their very first time and the point
spread to the top is within the grasp of every team!
U10 Team: 4 th of 7 teams
U12 Team: 2 nd of 6 teams
U12 Duet: 4 th - Emma Berry and Signa Lauf
7 th - Autumn Collier and Stephanie Wallace
U12 solo: 4 th - Breanne Bauer
6 th - Julia Batycky
The NAG swimmers had a fantastic meet also! Our girls are
among the youngest swimmers in this category, competing
against teams that are older and have been competing in this
category for 3+ years. In spite of this, the point spread to the
top is a completely attainable gap!
Blue Team: 5 th of 8 teams
on this in the coming weeks.
Water exerCiSe for artHritiS relief
fun anD effeCtive!
Everybody knows exercise is a significant part of staying
healthy. As anyone with arthritis can tell you, though, when
your joints say no to play, exercise goes from pleasurable and
stimulating activity into a trial of how much pain you can
tolerate.
The tendency when suffering from arthritis is to keep your
joints as motionless as possible. The problem is that this leads
to weakening of the muscles and tendons and a stiffening of
joints, which makes the pain worse over time. It is a
self-feeding cycle difficult to break out of.
One solution comes in the form of The Arthritis Foundation
Aquatics Program, a warm water exercise program designed
by the Arthritis Foundation. Why warm water exercise? The
warmth offered by hot water allows muscles to relax and
intensifies circulation of blood to the joints. In fact, ever since
the discovery of the first hot springs, humans have used the
miracle of warm water baths to fight aching joints.
Besides reducing the pain in your joints, exercising in water
permits body weight to be supported. This makes exercising
in water easier, safer and more relaxing. Not only that, but the
resistance that water provides as your body moves in it helps
strengthen muscles
These days, what with spas, health clubs and backyard hot
tubs, just about anyone has access to a pool of hot water to
relax in. Not only does this bring some immediate relief of
arthritis symptoms, but it also provides us with a great
environment in which we can exercise.
You should consult your doctor before beginning water
exercise. Water exercise is completely safe for most people,
with a few exceptions. If you have suffered serious joint
damage or replacement surgery you may be among them.
Your doctor will know what’s right for you. Also be aware of
temperature. Water between 83 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit is
ideal for exercise. Anything over 100 degrees may be
relaxing, but can lead to overheating. After you’ve gotten the
doctor go ahead, it’s time to get started.
The Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program exercises can be
found in the free brochure “Water Exercise: Pools, Spas and
Arthritis” from the Arthritis Foundation. Classes are also
offered at local pools nationwide. Contact your local Arthritis
Foundation office for information. The classes are lead by a
trained instructor, usually last between 45 minutes to an hour
and are scheduled 2 to 3 times a week.
With a doctor’s guidance, whether at a local pool or at home,
a water exercise program is a fun and effective way to combat
arthritis and keep joints and muscles healthy

Fitness Profile
rick Mueller | Fitness & Lifestyle Director
If you haven’t had a chance to meet Rick Mueller, our new Fitness & Lifestyle
Director yet, you are missing out on some great stories. Rick was born on May
2nd, 1965 in Toronto Ontario. Or as he would like to say the world was blessed
on that day; as you can already tell Rick has a very good sense of humor. Out
East Rick was working for the Sports Clubs of Canada where he was in charge of
adventure programming along with his fitness management role. This included
anything from canoe trips, to ropes courses, to ice fishing, and dog sledding.
Although Rick enjoyed life out East he decided it was time for a change and on
December 3rd, 2003 Rick packed up his rented Dodge Durango and headed out
West to Calgary. Rick however wasn’t coming out by himself. Not only is he an
adventure seeker, he is also a HUGE dog lover, so his two dogs Bear and Chocpaw
were passengers on the journey out West as well.
Upon arriving in Calgary, Rick already had a job lined up at World Health Club as
the Personal Training Manager for two locations. After just a few short years, of
working for two separate gyms, Rick was moved over to the Edgemont location
which was their flagship gym. After a year there Rick turned the Personal Training
department around and it went from a $30,000 per month revenue producer to
$110,000 per month revenue generator. Rick was loving his job, living his dream,
and enjoying life in Calgary. He enjoyed the membership base at the Edgemont
World Health Club and really valued seeing the results of so many people who
reached their goals and even exceeded their fitness expectations.
Even though Rick loved his job, after about two years, he started to burn out and
his job hit a plateau. He was working 16 hours a day and had limited time to
pursue his love of adventure. He was searching for something else, his spirit for
life was not being fulfilled, and he wanted more.
During this time of self-evaluation Rick decided to get involved with The Arthritis
Society and the Joints in Motion program. He set his sights high on the Mountain
of Kilimanjaro (which has a summit of 19,341 feet) and is the largest mountain in
Africa. Rick made his mind up and decided to go for it. Go big or go home!
The days leading up to the trek were filled with excitement and anticipation; the
adventure he was taking on was incredible. On March 1st, 2007 the group started
out on their trek to reach to summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The first couple of
days were not as intense as the summit climb, but they were still a test of the
climber’s ability and state of mind. Each climber goes through some sort of
altitude sickness; however, it affects people in different ways. At 4,000 meters Rick
was suddenly hit with altitude sickness and there was still roughly 2 kilometers of
vertical climb to go, so the team camped low that night. The next day Rick made
it to the final camp at 4500 meters which is where they camped for a few hours
before continuing the trek to the summit. During the ascent there were a lot of
emotions going through Rick’s mind as he struggled with his altitude sickness and
thoughts of how was he ever going to make it to the top. Rick states, “I needed
to manage the moment, and just remember to put one foot in front of the other.”
At 10:00 pm the group set out on their 16 hour summit attempt. The temperature
was so cold that the water in their camel packs froze if they didn’t take a drink of
water every few minutes.

Fitness Profile
rick Mueller | Fitness & Lifestyle Director
Half way up the final leg of the trek Rick came across a companion that was having
trouble with his water supply, and even though Rick was having troubles of his
own, as always, he was still willing to think of others. The adrenaline that came
over Rick at that moment was incredible; he was given a huge boost by helping
another person reach their goal of getting to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. After
helping his fellow trekker, he now set his sights and focus back on the summit.
With renewed determination Rick reached the summit at 8:30 am on March 5th,
2007 and without delay his porter gently reminded him of his earlier decision to
climb even higher past the summit which he proceeded to do. “We had done it,”
states Rick. The quest that he had been searching for since leaving Ontario had
finally been realized and his need for adventure fulfilled. Rick remembers the
entire process as being more about the smaller accomplishments and not just the
final destination. “I remember pushing through the pain, and everything about the
entire process from start to finish, and that was the accomplishment for me” states
Rick. I guess the saying is true that it’s not reaching the top that counts; it’s the
journey to get there that matters.
Once Rick returned from Africa, he was already setting his sights on his next
adventure. Not even giving himself much time to collect his thoughts, and realize
his incredible accomplishment, he signed up for the Kelowna full marathon in
October of 2008. Rick’s goal was to have a good enough race time in Kelowna
to qualify for the Boston Marathon. His final time was three hours and thirty
eight minutes which unfortunately didn’t qualify him for Boston, but was still an
accomplishment that can be held in very high regard. Two weeks after that Rick
participated in his first Body Building competition; again not giving himself much
time to sit back and enjoy what he has done over such a short period of time.
This need for adventure, and drive for accomplishment, is one of the many reasons
why the Calgary Winter Club is very lucky to have Rick Mueller as our new Fitness
& Lifestyle Director.
One of the main reasons that Rick decided to come to the Club is because of the
quality of members we have and the chance to work with so many unique and
interesting people. “I really wanted to get back to a service oriented environment,
and the Calgary Winter Club is a new challenge that I am really looking forward to”
says Rick. In the Fitness Centre Rick wants to raise the member experience to a
whole new level. He really wants to advance our fitness department into an area
that members fully enjoy and in which they feel challenged. In the short time that
Rick has been here he has already started a number of new fitness challenges,
created the fitness tip of the week, and is really working on engaging members
and motivating them to come up to the Fitness Centre and see what’s new. The
renewed buzz around the Club regarding the Fitness Centre, and the Personal
Training department, is very exciting and with Expansion 2012 the sky is the limit.
With Rick Mueller as the leader of our Fitness team our members can look forward
to novel goals and challenges, an improved atmosphere in the Fitness Centre, and
an even larger focus on living a healthy lifestyle.
We have a diverse team of personal trainers. Our team of
Trainers are a wealth of knowledge and are university
There is some ambiguity as to what a trainer does. Do they
count reps? Or are they a paid friend? Although clients have
fun and get more from their training than on their own, many
things our personal trainers do include:
• postural exercises;
• athletic conditioning for all levels;
• change intensity of exercise as you become
• teach proper movement patterns so you can increase
your functional longevity;
tmJ - tHe temPoromanDibular Joint
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most used
joints in the body, yet it is often ignored and overlooked. This
is the hinge joint of the jaw. TMJ syndrome often starts as a
tolerable nuisance, perhaps a low-grade soreness or an
annoying click. For many people, this slowly intensifies to
become a debilitating and painful condition affecting two of
life’s greatest pleasures - eating and talking! Some of the risk
factors for developing a TMJ problem are poor posture,
stomach sleeping, bruxism (teeth clenching and grinding),
stress, gum chewing, nail biting, hypermobile joints, past
motor vehicle accidents, and upper neck problems.
Frequently, there are related headaches, dizziness, facial
pain, neck pain and stiffness, and ear ringing or pain. In fact,
sometimes the primary complaint is not TMJ pain or clicking,
but the TMJ may be the primary source of symptoms such as
neck pain and headaches. The TMJ should always be
evaluated in the presence of the symptoms mentioned above.
One of the first signs of a TMJ disorder is a click with
opening. Clicking usually indicates altered timing between
the jawbone and the disc. This may be due to an overactive
muscle attaching to the front of the disc called the lateral
pterygoid. Some simple muscle retraining and muscle release
therapy can quickly improve the joint function and relieve the
symptoms. Recent studies have shown that compliance with
specific exercises are highly effective in treating TMJ
disorders compared to a control group who received no
muscle retraining.
Many people are surprised that physiotherapy can be a
valuable tool in treating TMJ disorders. It is, however, just
like every joint in the human body in terms of anatomy.
There are muscles, nerves, ligaments, a joint capsule and a
joint disc. These are the structures that we routinely assess
and rehabilitate throughout the body. We can use specific
exercises, joint mobilizations, acupuncture, pain modalities
like TENS or ultrasound, and education. It is strongly
recommended that every patient has also been evaluated by
their dentist. A dentist can assess whether a mouth guard is
appropriate, or if there are any contributing dental issues.
With a proper evaluation, physiotherapy is a safe, effective
tool in managing this complex disorder.
This year, we are launching a week long summer training
camp for the elite junior. We feel that we have a truly world
class facility and coaching team. In addition, we are thrilled
to announce that we have been successful in securing one the
most sought after coaches in the world to be our lead coach.
Martin Heath, originally from Scotland, spent 6 consecutive
years ranked inside the world’s top 10 reaching his highest
ranking of world number 4 in 1999. Following his very
successful playing career Martin relocated to the US to pursue
a coaching career, a career that has seen highlights such as
him becoming the US Teams National Junior Men’s coach
and head US Team coach at the World University
Championships. Martin’s day to day job is as head squash
coach at The University of Rochester. Under Martin’s
leadership in five short years the university team rose from
a ranking of No. 28 to No. 4, the quickest rise of any team
in the 90 year history of the US College Squash Association.
This is an ideal opportunity for our top junior players to learn
from a coach who has had both a spectacular playing career
and now is undoubtedly one of the world’s leading coaches.
Canada winter Games
The Canada Winter Games are held every four years. This
year’s event was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Around 20
different sports are present with squash being one of them.
Each province fields a team of the top 2 ranked players in
their U17 and U19 categories. This year, we were proud that
two of our members represented Alberta: Jason Field for the
boys team and Evelyn Moorhouse for the girls. Both had a
great time and helped their teams to very respectable finishes.
The boys finishing fourth overall and the girl’s going one
better and taking home the bronze medal, finishing third in
their event. Congratulations to both!
Alberta closed results
The Glencoe Club hosted this year’s Alberta Closed event,
attracting a strong field from far and wide. Competition
was always going to be tough. Standout performances for
the week were from: Dustin Paisley who continued his
recent vein of good form, reaching the final of the level 2
event, eventually losing a very tight match to Tyler Lee from
Edmonton; from Neil Pohlman who cruised through to the
final of the men’s level three before narrowly losing to Alex
Scherer; and from Brent Brooker who comfortably reached
the final of the men’s level 4 before losing to the Glencoe’s
Nathan Lao. Congratulations to all three.
Glencoe Junior Open
With a great squad of 33 juniors from our program
descending on the Glencoe for their annual junior open event
expectations were always going to be high. Our juniors did
not disappoint. Victorious in their categories were: Brett
Schille, Bobby Cragg and Kate Dumaine.
Runners-up were: Noel Heaton, Aaron Kunik, Hannah
Treleaven, Tyson Schille and Brooklyn McCasey.
Congratulations to all winners and runners-up and all others
who took part.
BC jesters
Assistant pro, Susie King, travelled with ten of our juniors to
Victoria, BC to compete in the prestigious BC Jesters, held at
the Cedar Hill Club in February. Again valuable
experience was gained by all players, in particular Tyson
Schille who won his event as well as Brett Schille, and
Samantha Roberts who placed second in her event.
Alberta Junior Championships
This year, the Glenora Club, Edmonton, hosted the Alberta
Junior Championships. Once again, our junior section was
out in force with 28 juniors travelling north. The event always
has the added significance as it is the final event for juniors to
try to secure a place on team Alberta. After a couple of days
of fierce competition, we came away with three titles and five
second place finishes. Our girls played very well. In the U11
category we saw a dominating display from our members. We
took places 1, 2 and 3. Lara Kunik won defeating all
opponents without dropping a game. Kate Dumaine played
very well to earn a well deserved second place and Brooklyn
McCasey came in third. Gillian Chick had a great match in
the final of the U13 category, losing by the narrowest
margin a nail biting 5 set match. In the U15 event, our players
secured spots 2, 3 and 4 spots with Hannah Treleaven
placing second after a tough 4 game match in the final.
Evelyn Moorhouse placed second in the U17 event losing to
experienced campaigner Heather Yong in the final.
The boys continued bringing home results. Alex Collins
playing only his second event beat Tyson Schille, also a
Winter Club member in an enthralling final that went the full
five games. Graham Kerford, coming back from an injury,
played controlled squash to reach the final, losing out
eventually to number 1 seed Adrian DeVries in an
entertaining 4 game final.
The hottest category by far was the boys U13. With 4 of the
field all ranked within the top 10 nationally, competition was
sure to be brutal. Once the dust had settled, Brett Schille
found himself facing Canada’s number 1 in the final match.
After an hour of top squash and five physically
demanding games, Brett managed to secure the title to the
delight of the CWC supporters. Noel Heaton placed third
while Aaron Kunik and Aidan Temple placed fourth and
fifth respectively. Special mention must go to both Aaron and
Aidan who showed that their hard work this season is
paying off as both beat top 10 ranked player Nathan Tovell of
the Glencoe Club.
GameTime (our registration & court booking system
providers) to improve registration for our members.
Version 2 is replacing the current version with up to
date technology and new features. We anticipate
that registration will be significantly improved
and we will monitor the upcoming summer
registration and subsequent registrations closely
to ensure that the improvements are effective.
To that end, the registration section of GameTime will
have a new look and more options for members.
This update allows us to provide options and features
that were not available in the first version for
program and event registration.
The sport booking section to book courts for tennis,
badminton & squash, bowling lanes, curling ice
Some new features include
• advanced search options to look for classes by age or
“70% of all change initiatives fail. But the odds turn in
your company’s favor once you understand that change is
a multi-stage process – not an event – and that persuasion
is key to establishing a sense of urgency, winning support,
and silencing naysayers.”
Is your organization changing? Are you implementing a new software system? Are you
reorganizing? Are you growing through a merger or acquisition? Do you want to change
how your organization or group works together? Have you ever been met with resistance
from your team or individuals in your organization when implementing such changes? If
you answered yes to any of these questions then you may benefit from the services of
Jadaly Consulting Ltd.
So, what is change management?
Change management is an organizational process aimed at
empowering employees to accept and embrace changes in their
current business environment.
Jadaly Consulting works with small business and large corporations to
ensure their people are engaged and ready for major transformation.
Resistance to change and having no change management program
are considered 2 of the top 10 reasons why organizational change
is not successful. So managing this resistance is key to your
organization’s success.
Jadaly Consulting’s focus is people and business processes.
Understanding the impacts on individuals and groups, addressing issues and
concerns from these impacts, identifying risks and mitigation strategies, streamlining processes,
communication of the changes as well as training & education are our areas of expertise.
The principle and founder of Jadaly Consulting is Janice Eby. Janice grew up in Edmonton
and has been in Calgary since 1995. She has vast business experience in both the
public and private sector with an emphasis on energy marketing, IT and more recently
human resources. Jadaly Consulting and its team have worked with organizations such as
Enbridge, BP Energy Canada, The City of Calgary, UBS, Enmax and Finning, to help them
achieve their transformation goals.
Janice and her spouse have been members of the Winter Club since 2009 and are active
members of the squash community.
If you have a current or future need for the services of
Jadaly Consulting in your organization, please contact us at
summer and fall we extend our range into the mountains.
Hikes occur every Wednesday from
April 20 - October 12.
Come to our hiking orientation on Thursday April 14 th at
11:30 am | April 6 th | Flying Ace Freddie McCall
Who Has Not Heard of WWI Flying Ace Freddie McCall?
Well now you will get an inside scoop regarding this famous
Calgarian - and it will be told by aviation author
Shirlee Matteson and Fred McCall - Freddie’s son.
Very delightful - very humorous
11:30 am | May 4 th | Alberta History - A Dark side
In 1928 the government passed the ‘SEXUAL STERILIZATION
ACT’. It was not revealed until 1972 - and not before 2800
people were sterilized - many for questionable reasons. Why was
this allowed to occur? Why did the citizens allow its existence?
register on-line through “Gametime”
or in person at the sports Office.
Cancellations and bookings must be made before 11:30 am on the
Monday prior to the luncheon date. Anyone requiring a ride to the
