2 Memorable Moments Volunteer Appreciation Night The 14th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night was held on February 23rd, 2011 in the Panorama Room. The theme this year was “Escape to Hawaii.” Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in this fun event! c a l g a r y w i n t e r c l u b . c o m | A p r i l . M a y 2 0 1 1 Fitness – A Special Accomplishment Some fantastic accomplishments happened mid-February at the Alberta Special Olympics Winter Games held in Leduc Alberta. A few very talented and competitive young adults; Jan Kryzan, Carla Natland, and Christopher Demchuck performed incredibly well. Jan and Carla helped lead Floor Hockey Team Scorpions to a Bronze Medal at the Games and Christopher placed third in his division for the Slalom Skiing Event. On behalf of the Fitness Team we want to let them know how proud we are of their accomplishments. Great work Jan, Carla, and Christopher! The Calgary Winter Club is proud to use FSC-certified paper in the production of this newsletter, demonstrating our commitment to the environment.

It has been a long, cold winter for our city and the Club offers a welcome diversion to take our minds off of the weather. Spring registration is in full swing with excellent member response anticipated in all program areas. If you have not yet signed up, check online to see if programs are still available. After what seemed like an eternity, our expansion is finally underway. On February 14 th , we had our official sodturning ceremony. The event was well attended by members, construction partners, local politicians and our neighbours from the Calgary Police Service. The theme of our past, present and future makes me feel that we are on the road to a successful expansion that will benefit our Club for years to come. You will certainly have noticed the early signs of change around the facility. I would like to acknowledge all of the Curlers who ended the season early so that we could start with the initial stages of construction in the curling rink. The fences around the east perimeter and the construction trailer are two signs that work has started. As promised, we intend to keep you fully updated with the expansion and how it will affect different program areas. I am grateful to Paul Pasutto, Garry Lamb and all of the Construction Committee who have completed the initial tender package for our expansion. I am pleased to report that it was delivered on budget. We look forward to working hard with all of our construction partners to achieve good results on future tender packages. Finance Chair Dan Halyk reported at the last Board meeting that the Club is on solid financial footing. With the expansion, there are some capital budget items that will be fast-tracked to avoid work overlap and achieve savings. Our management and the Finance committee have identified these areas and are keeping a watchful eye on the Club’s finances. Your Board has been in discussions with management with an eye to accelerating Phase Two and Three of the expansion. This involves the food and beverage and banquet areas of the Club. Preliminary discussions of a revised plan with substantial cost savings and an earlier completion date are underway. Stay tuned for future updates. Our food and beverage survey was completed and the results have been posted on the website. Thanks to all who participated. As a result of this survey, we will be forming a Food and Beverage sub-committee to assist with improving the dining experience in all areas of the Club. There will be Board and Management representation; however, we would like to have four or five members participate with this committee. Experience in the area would be great, but is not necessary. Please watch for details in Club Connections or contact our CEO, Kevin Boyles, if you would like to participate. As I mentioned in my last message, our Heritage Committee has been formed with Deborah Eastwood as the Chairperson. It is her goal to help preserve the history of the Club for future generations. Please contact Deborah or the club office if you would like to assist in this task. I would like to say that if you haven’t attended a Volunteer Appreciation Night at the Club, and you are a volunteer, you owe it to yourself to come next year. On February 23 rd , we had over 200 members in attendance. It is a great chance to meet fellow volunteers and sample some of the culinary delights prepared by Chef Nancy and her team. The Club lost a great volunteer this week with the passing of longtime member Murray Copot. Murray personified being a volunteer. We can all learn a lot from his lifetime of giving. Someone mentioned to me that he was like a grandfather to the Club. People like him make the Calgary Winter Club a better place. Let’s follow his example. See you at the Club!
