This will take place at the Crowchild Twin Arenas from June 13 - 24. Brochures will be available soon and we will be sending them out to all Skate Canada skaters and parents. Summer Skating CamP We are excited to introduce our new collaborative summer skating camp. A few of the Calgary North Skating Clubs are joining forces to create a school with all the perks needed to gain maximum development for the athletes. The biggest being the momentum the skaters give each other, having a full variety of levels and ages working towards common goals. This connection with other clubs allows us an open awareness of the growth in the sport as a whole. Dartfish software (video playback tool) harness lessons, outdoor running track and proper off-ice studio with mirrors and ballet bars are at our disposal. Stroking and spin classes will be part of the daily training with theme days to add some fun for the kids. There is adequate outdoor space for a picnic lunch outside on their 45 min. lunch breaks. The summer camp will take place at the Henry Viney (Renfrew) Arena and will run throughout the month of July. A high/low test day will take place near the end of the month. More concrete dates and info to come. We realize the venue is not as convenient as we are used to, but the reasons for this change are all for progressive reasons. We can understand the fear of change and the fear of the unknown. We ask you to embrace this change and come with us on this exciting journey. Just think about this... M a y 2 0 1 1 Skater of tHe montH - DeCember: kiran fong Kiran was out to practice during most of the Christmas holidays. She is close to and determined to land a new double jump. She not only practices all disciplines of skating, but also participates in off-ice and competes at the STARSkate level in both interpretive and free-skate events. Kiran is an excellent role model and abides by all of the skating section rules; she hands in her music in a timely manner and is dressed appropriately for each session. Kiran is also a program assistant for our Learn to Skate and preschool programs. Well done Kiran! Skater of tHe montH - January: Zoe CaSCaDDen Zoe is normally the first one onto the ice for the early morning practices and often the last one off. Since the summer she has passed her Junior Silver Skills and 3 dance tests. Zoe continually works diligently on her Freeskate and Interpretive programs as well as her dances and skills. She will be competing at the STARSkate Championships in the Introductory Interpretive event. Zoe just recently landed her fist axel and is working hard towards her first double jump. She also helps out as a program assistant on Saturdays. Thank you for all of your hard work Zoe. Skater of tHe montH - february: megan tuCker Megan’s hard work has paid off after landing her axel in just a short time. She continues to improve in all areas of her skating with an eagerness to be on the ice on time and prepare her program for upcoming competitions. She has progressed in the quality of her practices as well as attentiveness in both group and private lessons. Your passion for skating is shining through, Megan. Keep up the great energy! CoaCHeS tiP Mental Practice goes a long way. Using pen and paper to practice each segment of your routine, along with mental imagery of key points to remember, help prepare and organize thoughts into actions. Gradually shifting from slow- to real time and then listing to your music and visualizing the actual performance with your costume in the performance venue. The key to positive thinking is taking control of what you say to yourself. How we react to events is largely a matter of choice. Practice being realistic with your goals and supportive with your fellow skaters! As we wind down our season, let’s take a minute to remember just how far we have come this year. If you see that someone has accomplished a huge feat – let them know. Thank a friend for their help and support but most of all thank your parents for getting you to and from the rink. Spring Fling A N N UA L FA S H I O N S H O W & L U N C H E O N www.mariahclothing.com Update #4 Construction has begun! The curling parking lot is now closed until the completion of the construction. The upper parking lot has also been closed off for a limited time. In this edition of the Club News we will be highlighting a specific area within the Expansion - the Youth and Teen Rooms. They have been designed as two separate rooms, one for the youth (ages 6-12) and one for the teens (ages 13-18), with an office for the Youth & Teen Coordinator located between the rooms with access to both. Amber Wright, CWC Lifestyles Coordinator interviewed the Youth and Teen Committee, as well as individuals in Expansion U pdatEs that age category, in order to discuss the ideal look and feel of the rooms. The Teen Room will be designed to have a funky café style atmosphere. The use of low tables, cushions, and bean bag chairs will help to create this environment. This room will be used for a variety of purposes which is why there is no fixed furniture. In this area, Amber and her team, will be programming for a variety of activities such as movie nights and video game competitions. In addition, the space will be used as a study hall and a general hang out. The teens are presently working on creating art work, with the help of a local artist and CWC member, that will help to give the new room their own personal touch. 4 0 3 . 2 8 9 . 5 5 1 1 · e x p a n s i o n @ c a l g a r y w i n t e r c l u b . c o m · c a l g a r y w i n t e r c l u b . c o m F R I DAY A P R I L 1 5 , 2 0 1 1 Get ready for Spring by attending our Annual Spring Fling. We will be hosting a great workout followed by lunch and a fantastic fashion show featuring Mariah’s clothing. Velvet Jane will also be set up on site for a great shopping experience. This is your chance to stock up on accessories just in time for Mother’s Day. Sign up at the Fitness Desk for the workout from 9:15 am - 10:30 am. The Spring Fling sells out every year so register early. Registration opens on Game Time Wednesday March 16, 2011. Call 403.289.5511 to book your table. Cost is $29.95 plus GST. The Youth Room will have a more standard look and feel. It will have fixed tables and chairs for crafts, games, teaching, and studying as well as TV’s with video games and foosball. There will be similar programming in this area, but adapted to a younger age group. Located directly behind the Youth and Teen Rooms there will be a multipurpose area that can be utilized as a Breakout Room for combined events, programming, and activities. We are very excited about the addition of these areas and what it will mean for the youth and teen members of the Club. This will be their own special space, and possibly even their home away from home.
