Welcome to another edition of the Club News. I expect that many of you have noticed the progress on our expansion with our
building envelope beginning to be installed leading to the main expansion structure which will soon be closed in from the elements.
We have been fortunate to enjoy one of the warmest winters on record for the City of Calgary, which has assisted with
construction. Once the building is closed in, construction and finishing of the interior will continue. The good weather has helped to
keep our project on pace for our planned grand re-opening this fall and has also allowed us to remain within our financial parameters.
As previously indicated, we expect to deliver the additional 86,000 square feet of space to our Membership with no special
assessments or dues increases beyond normal inflationary amounts.
We were very pleased to be able to welcome our curlers and skaters back to the Club with the return of ice to both venues being
achieved at the start of January. There is a renewed energy in the Club with the return of these activities and we would like to thank
all of our curlers and skaters for their patience and understanding through the fall. A special thank you also goes out to our ice crew;
Rob Hawley, Jorge da Silva, and Shane Fortier who sacrificed significant time and energy over the Christmas season to restore the
two venues. The ice crew, maintenance, and housekeeping teams have all done exceptional work in dealing with the challenges
presented by the Expansion.
Over the past year, your Board of Directors and Club Management Team have had a specific focus on improving the communications
within the Club and ensuring that all Members are reminded that this is your Club and that your voice can always be heard. We have
a great Club with active families and Members and your feedback is required and encouraged in relation to our regular programs,
operations, and Member experiences. As we complete and then integrate the new components of our expansion we will be enjoying
new programs and services and Member input and comments will assist with the success of these additions.
Our CEO Kevin Boyles has just completed his first full year at the Club and has made a commitment to the timely response to all
Member inquiries and issues. It may not always be possible to meet every request, but your feedback is always appreciated and
valued. We have received comments from some of our members indicating that they are not sure how to provide feedback both
positive and negative to our Management Team and our Board of Directors and in response to these requests, the article on Page 11
provides a breakdown of Club Communications and details “how your voice can be heard”.
I would like to draw your attention to some of the goals and initiatives that are being pursued to facilitate exceptional Member
communications;
1. A response within 24 hours for all e-mails and phone messages left with the Club’s CEO.
2. Response from the appropriate Department Manager within one week for all comment cards and on-line feedback submissions
(when a response is requested).
3. The creation of a Board Communications Committee that is working with Management to review and improve all of our systems
and methods of communication.
4. A commitment from Club Management to provide timely and complete information regarding all potential issues and challenges
that Members may encounter. For example, advanced notification of potential parking constraints and construction impacts.
President’s Message Continued from page 3...
We are committed to keeping you informed of all important issues, even when the
news might not be positive. I hope that you will find that our Club is becoming a much
more open and barrier free environment that we can all enjoy to the fullest.
As you read this message, the Club will have initiated Sunday afternoon “Member
Hard-hat Tours” of the Expansion site. Please feel welcome to take advantage of this
opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at the exciting new facilities that are on the
way.
Construction has progressed to a level that you can now see the location, size and
shape of some of our new areas such as the expanded fitness area, new studio rooms,
the center court – multi-purpose gymnasium, gymnastics centre, climbing wall area
and if access permits the 3rd level walking/jogging track and the amazing views from
this level.
These are exciting times for our Club and despite the challenges and inconveniences
we as Members occasionally encounter, we are fortunate to have an outstanding
Management Team and committed Board that are here for our Membership and who
all appreciate and value your participation and feedback. We look forward to
continuing to improve our Club, our communications and the CWC Membership
experience.
Please ensure that all belongings brought into the childcare
are clearly labeled. Many of the children who use the
childcare have similar looking jackets and boots. It is very
easy for a child to pick up the wrong coat so please label
coats. This way your child can learn to check for their own
label and if the wrong coat/boot is taken we will have your
name on the one that is left so we can get them switched.
This is the seventh formal Expansion
Update and we will continue to
provide updates until the project
is completed in the fall of 2012.
Be sure to have your email registered
with the Club to receive timely
information and important member
construction alerts.
There has been a significant amount of
progress over the last two months and
we have enjoyed favorable weather
this winter that has helped to move
the project forward. Some of the
milestones that have been achieved
since the new year include:
1. The Curling Centre and the
Skating Rink reopened at the Club
on January 6th.
Pool Policy
Expansion U pdatEs - U pdatE #7
2. Administration moved back into
their former office in early February.
3. The 55 plus area has been returned to
that group for their programming.
4. The main east expansion is
substantially enclosed.
5. The floors in the east expansion
have all been poured and finishing
work has begun.
We are also expecting the delivery of the
new climbing wall system at the end of
February and the installation of the
various components over the following
three weeks. The climbing wall system,
called Clip N Climb, will be a high light of
the new area and everyone is excited to
see it moving into place.
The installation of the windows for the
main building will be happening very
shortly and this will allow the project
to be completely closed in. At this point
weather will no longer be a factor in
completing the building.
If you would like to have a preview peak
at the project while under construction,
there are now Sunday tours being
organized by the Club. If you would like
to book a tour email Kyle McNichol at
kylem@calgarywinterclub.com.
We would like to thank all Members
for their patience during construction,
particularly during the winter months,
which are the highest Club usage
periods of the year.
As the result of Member feedback, and to ensure that we maximize the utilization of our pools to the
benefit of all Members, we will be introducing (on a trial basis) the following new policies for pool bookings;
• In the event that any particular pool booking time will not be utilized, the person responsible for that
program or event is required to notify the aquatics office at least 24 hours prior to the booking.
• Unless 24 hour notice of a late-start has been provided to the Aquatics Office, all “no-show” bookings
will be cancelled exactly 15 minutes after the start of the booking, and the pool/lanes will be made
available for alternative use as per Member demand.
Our hope is that these policies will reduce the occurrences
of unutilized pool bookings, which are frustrating for both
Members and Aquatics Staff. Club Management would
prefer to provide the greatest opportunities possible for the
use and enjoyment of our Aquatics Centre.
“better everyday” at whatever you like to do. It is
important that we set SMART goals. By smart I mean:
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.
Statistics show that your chance of attaining your goals rises
drastically if you write them down on paper and review them
daily, perhaps even reading them out loud. So grab a pen and
paper and write those goals down!
It is important for parents to be involved as supporters and
fans, but does not necessarily mean they need to be at the rink
for every training session. By allowing the athlete time away
to gain independence, the youngster learns to pay attention
to timelines, equipment and individual practice duties. It is
recommended that parents rather, pop in to check on the odd
practice making more notice of the growth and development,
as well as show the skaters their interest in the activity.
AquAfIt updAtE
No Aquafit Classes are running on Easter Weekend:
Friday April 6 th and Sunday April 8 th
Zumba: classes registered, best value or coupons maybe used
starting in March!
Reminder coupons maybe used for all aquafit classes now
except Water running Wednesday night 7:05 - 8:00 pm! That
class is registered only due to pool space.
Exercising in the pool is a great way to add variety to your
fitness routine. Improved muscle tone and cardiovascular
fitness are just two of the many benefits you will gain from
putting on your swimsuit and jumping into the water.
Aquafit offers an amazing low-impact, head-to-toe workout
for beginners or seasoned exercisers. It’s also great for people
who are recovering from knee or other injuries.
BuoyANCy hAS ItS BENEfItS
Neck-deep water supports
90 percent of your body
weight and relieves stress on
knee and hip joints. Pressure
is released when a joint is
submerged in water,
encouraging freedom of
movement through its full
range of motion.
That makes aquatic
exercise the ideal choice for
those with arthritis or other chronic problems. The buoyancy
of water also provides support for older individuals,
decreasing the risk of injury due to falling.
Putting up resistance
The other interesting thing about water is that it provides
resistance in multiple directions, with hydrostatic pressure
exerted equally on all surfaces of the body. Movement in
any side-to-side or forward-backward direction meets equal
resistance, so that opposing muscle groups work equally. This
means that the muscles in the front of the leg work when the
leg is lifted forward and the muscles in the back of the leg
work when the leg is lifted behind.
As a result you burn more calories when exercising in the
water compared to exercising on land. A one-hour aquafit
class burns nearly 400 calories, comparable to jogging at a
pace of six to eight minutes per kilometre for the same length
of time.
The next time you’re at the pool, try a deep-water workout or
sign up for an aquafit exercise class at your local swimming
pool.
hoW to SELECt thE rIght goggLES
Well chosen goggles can give you clear dry vision in the water.
A good fit comes from goggles that offer both a water tight seal
and comfortable fit.
the shape
Goggles are designed to fit either “oval” or “round” shaped eye
sockets. Try to determine what shape is your eye. If the hard
bones around the inner corner of your eye form a narrow angle,
you have an oval eye socket. If the angle is fairly broad you
have a round eye socket. Oval goggles are smaller and shorter
and tend to fit in the eye socket. Round goggles are larger and
wider and tend to fit over the eye socket. Select the best shape
for your eyes.
the seal
Both oval and round goggles come with either foam or a
polyseal gasket material. Foam gaskets produce a pressure type
seal, which is maintain by the strap. Polyseal gaskets produce
a suction type seal and fit inside the socket. Try both types to
see what works best for you. The final fit factor is the nose
bridge. Some bridges are adjustable, some are not. Ensure the
nose bridge on your final goggle choice suits nose and distance
between your eyes.
test the goggle seal
The three main areas that cause leakage are: the corner of your
eyes near the bridge of your nose, the depression between your
cheekbone and nose along the bottom of your eye, and the outer
corner of your eyes.
Without using the straps gently press the goggles up to your
eyes - ensure that you feel a bit of suction. Now try the goggles
on with strap. Is the nose bridge and overall fit comfortable?
Open your mouth and move jaw side to side; check for suction,
air spaces and snug fit.
When you find a perfect pair you just need to take extra care of
your goggles so they can last a long time:
• rinse gently in cold water after each use
• let them air dry naturally
• do not rub inside of your lenses
• keep them from dirt and grease
• remove them properly: hold onto the eyepiece and take the
strap first then let goggles fall off your face
• store them in protective packaging
• do not leave them exposed to the sun or heat.
He currently sits on top of the boys under 13 national
season lead to top 10 rankings.
Congratulations to all of our elite players on their rankings
international experience
December is a busy month for top junior squash players with
several international level events to choose from. First on the
calendar is the Canadian Junior Open, an event traditionally
held in Niagara ON and attracting top players from Canada
and the US as well as many top juniors from South America.
The Winter Club was well represented with 5 of our juniors
travelling for the event, all gaining valuable experience. Next
up was the US junior open, a true juggernaut of an event.
With over 750 juniors from all around the globe this is now
the largest individual junior event on the planet. The standard
is extremely high in all categories. All of our juniors played
well and learned from the experience, not least that there is a
whole world of squash outside of Alberta.

Glencoe Junior Open
The Glencoe hosted their annual junior tournament in late
January. 81 juniors, mainly from around Alberta, attended
the weekend. As always our juniors entered the event in large
numbers making up one third of the total entries.
Congratulations to Graham Kerford and Evelyn
Moorhouse who dominated their events winning both. And
also to Brett Schille who won the boys U15 title, an event
which saw the Winter Club take places one through six,
clearly showing signs that our juniors will be a force to be
reckoned with provincially for the foreseeable future.
women’s weekend
The Glenora Club again hosted the popular women’s weekend
this year. With almost 150 ladies and girls from all around
Alberta a fun weekend was guaranteed. Congratulations to
Evelyn Moorhouse who followed up her recent
dominating performance at the Glencoe junior open with an
equally dominating showing in the ladies open event. Evelyn
beat several higher ranked players on route to the final where
she comprehensively beat a local rival three games to love.
Jester’s Junior championships
The annual Junior Jester’s was once again hosted by the
Glenora Club in Edmonton. This event is designated by
Squash Canada as a core event meaning the entry list is much
stronger than for a regular junior tournament provincially.
With over 150 of the best juniors in Canada in attendance
competition was always going to be fierce. Our juniors
performed admirably coming out with the best results of any
of the clubs taking part. Particular note should go to
Hannah Treleaven, Noel Heaton and Jay Peris who won
their events, Jarrett Peris who was second in his and
William Kuhn, Brett Schille, Graham Kerford and Tyson
Schille who came third in theirs.
myofASCIAL rELEASE for rotAtor Cuff
muSCLES (froZEN ShouLdEr SyNdromE)
All four rotator cuff muscles attach to the shoulder blades.
According to Dr. Hal Blatman, a chronic and myofascial pain
experts and myofascial trigger points in two of the rotator cuff
muscles (infraspinatus and subscapularis) are a major contributor
to “frozen shoulder” syndrome.
Myofascial release is a technique which massages and
stretches the tight fascia, which in turn, decreases the stress
on the surrounding tissues. Self-myofascial release is a way to
relax overactive muscles and allow for a greater stretch.
On March 17 th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, Dianne Anton is
offering a workshop where you will learn how to release the
four rotator cuff muscles as well as a routine for frozen
shoulder. Register on GameTime.
The Fitness Centre is definitely a busy place, especially during
our peak times where we can have 45+ members on the
our numbers have been quite steady.
The following times are where we see the most traffic on
average: Monday - Friday: 9:15 - 11:00 am
Monday - Friday: 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Saturday: 9:00 - 11:30 am
If you are working out during these times, please be open to
sharing space and equipment with everybody as this is proper
gym etiquette. At the same time asking to share equipment in
between member’s sets and even asking if members are done
with a piece is very appreciated. We call this “working in”.
Sometimes this can be intimidating, if you need assistance on
SprINg CLEANSINg
In Chinese medicine, spring represents the Liver. The liver
has a very important role in detoxification so this is an ideal
time to reflect on cleansing the body. When you walk into any
vitamin or natural foods store, you will see a whole section
reserved for various detox cleansing programs. For some, this
accelerated cleanse can work well. However, for the
majority of people, especially those with a focus on
fertility, this method of cleansing is not optimal and can
actually deplete the body rather than build it up.
Here are a few simple ideas to incorporate into your day to
allow the body to detoxify:
• Upon waking, drink 1 glass of water with 1/4 to 1/2 of a
lemon squeezed into it. This is the best daily detox you
can provide for the liver
• Pick 1-2 days per week that will be vegetarian with a
focus on vegetables
• 70% of your plate should be greens & veggies for both
lunch and dinner
• Consider alkaline foods for breakfast like millet with
berries, chia and almonds (soaked)
• Chlorella - cleanses environmental toxins from the body
including radiation, residues, pesticides, herbicides and
most toxic “heavy” metals including mercury. It also
builds the “yin” of the body, which is so important with
fertility treatments, overcoming stress, inflammation and
mental irritation.
• Water, water and more water (no, coffee isn’t water :-)
• Meditation, Tai Chi, walks in nature - all help to build
the Yin or calming aspect of the body. The liver always
wants more yin so the more you focus on this (daily) the
greater the detoxification.
• Journal or consider a letting go ritual to release all of the
“bags” you have been carrying with you over the years.
Spring is a natural time to allow the body to release that
which is no longer benefiting or supporting you.
What you can expect to feel:
• Increased energy
• Glowing skin (although initially it may flare up as the
body releases toxins)
• Better bowel movements
• Elimination of bloating and gas
• More consistent periods
• Elimination of PMS
• A state of calmness even when there is stress around you
leslie ring-adams | Traditional Chinese Medicine
When Leslie Ring-Adams started at the Calgary Winter Club in 2005 it was almost
like a home coming of sorts. Leslie and her family had been members at the Club
since she was a young girl and her and her husband joined the Club in 2004 as
Conversion Members. Leslie, a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine studied at the
International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver. The three year
program has helped train, and educate Leslie into becoming an integral part of the
Calgary Winter Club team.
Traditional Chinese Medicine uses a holistic approach to look at all aspects of the
body: diet, stress, sleep, digestion as well as the issue that might have brought
the patient into the clinic. Some of the most common ailments that might bring a
patient into the clinic include pain, women’s health, cancer, allergies and digestive
disorders. Leslie and her team of Acupuncturists treat by encouraging the body to
promote self-healing and improve function. Accupunture is an effective and safe
form of treatment. “Acupuncture is not for everyone but the body will choose to
respond positively to the treatment or not at all,” states Leslie. A common fear is that
acupuncture can be painful. “The treatment is very relaxing and extremely gentle,”
Leslie promises. The team in the TCM clinic feel that Traditional Chinese Medicine is a
great form of treatment and should be considered by everyone when looking for their
best option. A lot of insurance companies and employers even cover the treatment
which makes it a very cost effective form of treatment. Leslie and her team operate
with an open door policy and encourage all members that have questions, to come up
to the clinic to discuss the different options and benefits
that Traditional Chinese Medicine can offer.
Leslie and her husband Chris think of the Club as their
second home, not only does Leslie work at the Club but
their growing family spends many evenings and weekends
participating in activities and social events. Leslie really
loves the sense of community and family focus here at the
Club. Leslie and Chris’s two children, Caleb and Livia have
grown up at the Club and have participated in many of the
different programs and services that are offered. This is not
only a recreation facility for Leslie, but as the owner of the
TCM clinic at the Club, she really takes pride in providing
the members with an alternative form of treatment and
believes in the benefits that Traditional Chinese Medicine
can offer to most if not all the members at the
Calgary Winter Club.
