City Bowling Championships
Congratulations to Nolan Scott (on the far left)
of the Calgary Winter Club who took home the
silver medal at the Calgary 5-pin youth Bowling
Challenge with three fantastic games of 200,
250 and 275. The most amazing feat is that
Nolan was only seven years old when he rolled
those amazing games. Keep on throwing those
Welcome to the summer edition of the CWC Club News. As you read this issue of our magazine, the Club will
be entering the home stretch of Phase 1 of our Expansion project. The project has seen its fair share of
challenges, some to be expected for a project of this size and some unique challenges due to the complexity of
adding to existing buildings. We are currently on the 3 rd Chandos Project Manager and 2 nd Project
Superintendent and we can assure you that we are actively involved with every aspect of the construction and
managing our General Contractor and Consultants as effectively as possible. The final product will be
impressive for all members as we now find ourselves on the verge of taking over many spectacular new spaces
and providing significant new opportunities and programs for the entire membership to enjoy.
In addition to the Expansion project, the Club will also be undertaking a number of summer projects this year,
including: a cafeteria renovation to improve our look and service capabilities; a skating change-room
renovation to move the skate-changing area out of the hallway; replacement of the badminton floor; and a
significant upgrade to both the existing men’s and women’s locker rooms. These projects are part of the Club’s
annual capital maintenance program and are funded through the annual facility improvement fee. Please watch
for communication regarding area closures that will allow this work to be performed, but don’t let these
area-specific renovations limit your enjoyment of the Club through the summer months.
This has been a year of change at the Club, as your Board and Senior Management Team have worked to
ensure the positive direction and improved culture of our Club, while also working through a substantial
physical transformation. Some members have asked if the Club has shifted philosophy in recent years, and I
can assure you that our mission and core values have remained unchanged throughout - with our focus
remaining on providing excellent facilities, service and opportunities for our member families. For further
clarity, a summary of the Club’s current strategic plan, including our mission, vision statement, goals, and
performance indicators is provided on page 43.
Throughout the past year, we have placed a significant emphasis on improving the Club’s communication
efforts with the provision of timely, relevant and open information whenever possible. Based on the results of
our recent member survey, we are hearing that many of you have noticed and appreciate these efforts. You can
expect these efforts to continue and to be enhanced going forward.
In looking at ways to operate the Club more efficiently and to spend our resources wisely, Club Management
has identified two issues for us to consider:
1. Each year the Club spends over $20,000 on postage and almost $10,000 on poly-bagging the Club News to
be sent to our homes. Like many families who receive the Cub News in the mail I was not aware that each
of us could decline the mail process and pick up the Club News at the Club. In our recent member survey,
more than 75% of respondents indicated that they would be happy to pick their Club News up at News
stands placed throughout the Club to avoid these costs. These will be conveniently located, and having the
Club News visible and on-hand throughout the Club might increase readership as well. Watch for more
information this fall, regarding an initiative to switch over to in-Club distribution, with an opt-in choice
available for those individuals who would still like to have the Club News delivered to their homes. The
current issue of the Club News is also available on our website.
President’s Message Continued...
2. You might be surprised to learn that the Club spends over $250,000
annually on credit card transaction fees. Many private clubs avoid
the bulk of these charges by not accepting credit cards for the
payment of member accounts and proceeding only with Auto Debit.
We have asked Club Management to investigate this issue and in
the fall the Board will consider the information that is gathered to
determine what options we might have. If you have any thoughts on
this issue, please e-mail your ideas to Kevin Boyles for our
consideration.
Finally, you will have recently received your annual dues statement and
shareholder letter. Both Management and the Board are pleased to have
been able to bring forward a 2012/2013 budget that meets all of our
pre-construction commitments, with a dues increase that is less than 5%,
as promised.
There are many activities, programs and opportunities available at the
Club throughout the summer months, be sure to keep the Club in your
plans and come by often, especially on those rainy days when your
outdoor plans may change. Formal tours will be limited through the
finishing stages this summer, but if any of you are interested in a tour
of the new facility, please feel free to contact Management to arrange a
time.
Please continue to ask any questions or voice any concerns - we
appreciate your feedback. Have a great summer.
May 29th at their annual year-end banquet. The swimmers
competed in a time trial and then everyone had a blast
boys are planning to go on to University. We are very proud
of their contributions and achievements and wish them both
all the best in their future endeavors! We also thanked our
for the executive who worked so tirelessly on the swim club’s
behalf.
Although the little swimmers are now done for the year,
the older swimmers are still training for their last important
meets. We have Age Group Trials in Lethbridge, Age Group
Championships in Edmonton and two swimmers, Mark
Corah and Emmett Collings, will be training hard for
Canadian Age Group Championships held here in Calgary at
the end of July at the Talisman Centre. The older swimmers
are all looking forward to an outdoor meet held in Missoula,
Montana in the middle of June and have begun gathering their
tents and sleeping bags for the event.
What an amazing year the Tsunamis team had for 2011/2012.
Congratulations to all the swimmers who participated in
various competitions and achieved new personal best times
and awards. Our Senior Team is currently fundraising to
compete at the World Lifesaving Championships in Adelaide,
Australia. This is an amazing opportunity for our swimmers
who have trained vigorously the past two years to qualify. The
event takes place November 6 - 23 and the team is looking
for sponsorship to help subsidize the purchase of equipment,
registration fees and travel expenses. If you are interested in
sponsoring the team in any capacity, please contact our Team
Manager, Sherry Southwood, at ssouthwood@shaw.ca. The
team appreciates any and all help.
Congratulations to the Senior Tsunamis Swim Team!
During the weekend of June 2 nd and 3 rd they competed in the
Summer is in full swing and Winter Club
members are enjoying the great outdoors.
Each September, the Physiotherapists at
the Club treat a variety of injuries that are
related to the sports of summer. Here are
some suggestions to keep you in the game
all summer long.
Golfing Sprains and Strains: Common
golf injuries include low back strain,
elbow tendinitis, and shoulder pain. A
good warm-up will help avoid these
injuries. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes
before your tee time and head to the
driving range. Start your warm-up with
dynamic stretching (stretching that involves
slow movement) of the legs, arms,
and back. Slow lunges will stretch the
hips. Slow golf swings with a short club
will get the spine moving. Start hitting
golf balls with the shorter clubs and work
up to the driver. Relax your grip while
you play to avoid elbow and shoulder
injuries that result from hitting the ground
with increased upper body tension. Don’t
plan any marathon golf trips early in the
season. And remember to eat and drink
(water preferably) along the way.
Happy 20 th Birthday to the Physiotherapy Clinic! It opened
in 1992 under the direction of Jackie St. George-Rennie, who
has grown the Clinic to now include three other regular therapists
and four Doctors of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We
look forward to the next 20 years!
By Lois Pohlod, Sport Physiotherapist
Four-plus hours of golf with poor
nutrition can lead to dehydration and
muscle fatigue, resulting in reduced
performance and possible injury.
Water Skiing Mishaps: Calgarians do not
get the chance to water-ski throughout the
year and not many other activities work
the water-ski muscles in the same way.
Muscle strains and tears, especially of the
hamstrings, are the result of trying just a
bit too hard out on the water. Warm up on
land or in the water prior to putting on the
skis. A vigorous walk, light jog or short
swim will get the blood flowing. Stretch
out both the quadriceps and hamstrings
as well as the arms. Start each run with
a warm-up ski, slowly progressing the
difficulty and challenge as the body eases
into the fun. Resist the temptation to
“show-off” for the crowd if you are not in
water-skiing shape!
Hiking in the Canadian Rockies: The
mountains are calling with hikes to
challenge all ages and abilities. As with
any exercise program, a slow steady
progression of distance and difficulty
will prevent injury. Patella-femoral
pain (pain around or under the knee
cap) often results from the strain of
the downhill walk. Good flexibility,
strong quadriceps and eccentric work
(drop squats) throughout the year will
help prevent knee pain. In addition,
good footwear is essential for comfort
and safety. Your body also needs
to get used to wearing heavy hiking
boots and carrying a heavy pack. Try
carrying your pack around the back
yard for short periods to build your
strength. Hopefully the winter of
weight training will help your neck
and shoulders adjust quickly to the
load. Start your hiking program with
short, easy trips and build up
gradually to the ultimate adventure.
Remember to stretch before and after
the hike and stop to take in the
magnificent views along the way!
Alberta Open - 6 finalists - 2 champions!
The last ‘major’ of the season saw the Winter Club out in
force. This year the Glencoe Club hosted the prestigious
Alberta Open. With prize money, ranking points and, of
course, bragging rights on the line competition was always
going to be fierce. After 4 long days, the finalists squared up
to decide who would be crowned champion. Our members
did fantastically well with members reaching 6 out of 11
finals. Congratulations to champions Susie King and Brent
Brooker and runners up, Alex Paisley, Brett Schille, Aaron
Kunik and Kelly Clements.
Adult Nationals
The biggest event in the national calendar was held at the
White Oaks club in Ontario this year. Over 200 players from
across Canada descended on the club to fight for the honor of
being crowed national champion. Club pro Susie King had
a very good run in the ladies open event. Seeded 5 th Susie
had a potentially tough quarter final against the 4 th seed from
Winnipeg. As it turned out Susie made very short work of the
match winning fairly comfortably 3-0. In her semi final match
Susie was drawn against the number 1 seed and current world
ranked 35 th player Sam Cornett. Playing such a highly ranked
player was always going to be a difficult proposition for
Susie. And things did not look good after losing a close first
game and then the second as well, but she came back strongly
winning the third and fourth games to force a decider. Fighting
all the way Susie pushed the number 1 seed but eventually
came up just short of victory. Exhausted the next day Susie
had nothing left in the tank for the third fourth place play off.
Also having a great tournament was Andrew McDougall.
Coming back from a serious back injury Andrew had it tough
against the top men in the country. In the end, Andrew’s only
loss came in the semi finals to eventual champion Shahier
Razik, meaning Andrew finished a fantastic third overall.
Congratulations also to Megan Glenday who won the ladies
skate Canada’s new Canskate PrograM
Over the past few years Skate Canada has continued
working towards implementing Long-Term Athlete
Development (LTAD) philosophies into Skate Canada
programming. It is an exciting time as we take our first steps
towards making these philosophies a reality in our sport and
making improvements to our programs that will benefit all
our skaters. Reflecting the work done by the LTAD Learn to
Skate stage working group and feedback provided by coaches
and other stakeholders over the last three seasons, as well as
concept and pilot testing done from January 2010 to
present, the revised CanSkate curriculum is in its final stages
of completion.
The revised CanSkate program consists of:
• Stage 1 to 6 badges (same badges as current)
• The current fundamental movements plus four new
components - Speed, Extreme, Spins & Spirals, Hockey/
Ringette - have been reconfigured into three fundamental
areas called Balance, Control and Agility (the ABCs of
skating!):
Balance: Skate Forward, forward moving Extreme,
Speed, Spins & Spirals and Hockey/Ringette skills
Control: Stop, Skate Backward, backward moving
Extreme, Spins & Spirals and Hockey/Ringette skills
Agility: Turn, Jump, turn and jumping skills from
Extreme, Spins & Spirals and Hockey/Ringette
Here at the CWC we plan to implement the new CanSkate
program as early as January 2013. Stay tuned for more
information.
Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD)
What is LTAD?
LTAD is human development from birth to adulthood and is a life-long process. To completely grasp this
process a lot of experts and industry leaders divide this human development into distinct stages with
specific characteristics. The Canadian Sport for life model is broken down below and will give parents and
members a good sense of what is involved in the LTAD model.
1. Active Start – Active Start is about starting children off on the right foot. Making physical activity a fun
part of daily life creates the right setting for your child to learn.
2. Fundamentals – This stage focuses on learning fundamental movement skills and building
overall motor skills.
3. Learn to Train – During this stage, children are ready to learn and refine the general sports skills they
need to athletic development and participation in sport for health.
4. Train to Train – In this stage athletes start to specialize in the sport of their choice. Children also start to
compete more seriously.
5. Train to Compete – This stage is about the development of athletes as young adults. By this stage they
are focusing on a specific skill or event. For example they are a Goalie, not just a hockey player.
6. Train to Win – This stage is about training to win at the highest levels of sport. For example
international competition. Only the very best and most dedicated reach this stage.
7. Active for Life – This stage is all about a smooth transition from a competitive career to lifelong physical
activity and participation in sports. The goal is to make the transition from competitive sports positive
and to keep everyone active for life.
* Information used from www.canadiansportforlife.ca
The LTAD model has been adapted by many different sports in Canada and there are a lot of supporting
documents for parents and coaches to review. Below are some websites that can be used to help fully
understand the LTAD model. The Calgary Winter Club is currently working on bringing a form of the
LTAD model to the members, and plans and information will be rolled out in the upcoming editions of the
Club News. If you have any questions about LTAD, please contact Amber Wright the Club’s LTAD Chair at
“Real Estate”
Land is Lasting
It can be built upon
It can be excavated
It can be leased
It can be bought
It can be sold
And while it may be altered and renewed people
will always want to own it for their home their
Believe It or Not!
• In our five Spring Bowling Leagues this season, the
margin of qualifying for the League Championships was
one point in three leagues and a half a point in the other
two leagues. This proves that our handicap system keeps
all teams close and allows everyone to stay in the hunt
for playoff positions.
• On the last regular night in the 5-pin Mixed League,
Marg Aksenchuk catapulted her team into the Finals
when she rolled games of 249 and 262 to be an
unbelievable 276 pins over average.
• The Squash Section held their very successful Annual
Wind-up at the Bowling Centre on May 12 th . At the
event, Colleen Hicke rolled the highest recorded score
by a woman at the Club (191) since we introduced
10-pin bowling last August. This achievement is even
more amazing since Colleen has only bowled 10-pin a
few times in her entire life. Well done!
highlights froM Bowling general Meeting
• It was decided that we will have
• If your favorite Club area is closed
• With the installation last summer
of synthetic lanes, there is no need
to close for long periods for floor
refinishing and sanding. However,
we will still have to close for a short
period (from August 27 th to 29 th ) for thorough
facility cleaning and pinsetter maintenance
• Remember to book lanes on Game Time when
you are looking to bowl, especially on those rainy
Junior tennis triP
This past April a group of junior tennis players travelled to
France and Spain to experience how the top tennis countries
train and compete. The trip started in the south of France
at the resort town of Canet-en-Roussillon. We trained there
as a team twice a day for four days, which was a nice way
to acclimatize. We then travelled to Barcelona via bus, and
headed straight to the Barcelona Open. We watch most of the
top male players compete on clay, and this included Canada’s
Milos Raonic. After a full day of watching tennis we headed
to Club de Tennis Andres Gimeno to start our training. We
trained for four days with their coaches and finished our tour
with interclub matches. I would like to thank all players and
parents for making this happen. A special thanks to Jean for
her efforts and we all look forward to the next trip.
Summer SeaSon GrillinG TipS
With the Grilling season already upon us and being in the province that
produces some of the best Beef in the world. Here are a few tips on getting
the most from your Grill.
1. Buy the best beef you can – AAA is the top – and use appropriate cuts for quick cooking.
Rib Eyes, striploins, and tenderloins are most appropriate. Make sure that the beef is
thick enough that you will be able to achieve your desired doneness; 3 cm is best for
cooking. When you buy your steaks ask the butcher to cut them for you. One 16 oz strip
instead of two 8 oz will get better results.
2. Always make sure that your grill is cleaned and preheated before use. This will ensure
that you are at the proper cooking temperature and get great grill marks. Hot, properly
seasoned grills mean you don’t have to oil the steak before cooking and the steak won’t
taste like gasoline.
3. Season the meat appropriately just before you put it on the grill. Any of your favorite
seasonings will do, by choosing, toasting, and grinding your own spices it will make all
the difference in the world. If you are going to add any sauce to the steak make sure you
do it near the end of cooking. Sugars in the sauces can easily burn and ruin the steak.
4. The steak should be turned twice and flipped once. Place the steak on the grill and turn
it once to get the grill marks on the first side. Once the steak is cooked on the first side
flip it over, turn it once more to get the grill marks on the second side. If your steak is
burning then you have it too close to the heat source, move it off a little farther to the
side. If done properly your steak should show even cooking when cut through.
5. The simple guide to doneness is as follows (you must use the turn/flip/turn method
above): When you see blood start to come out of the steak it is rare, when the blood
starts to coagulate it is med rare, when the blood is coagulated it is medium, when
there is a lot of coagulated blood hanging off the steak it is medium well, when the
blood starts to burn it is well done.
6. You must allow the steaks to rest after they start showing these signs. It allows the meat
to continue to cook to the desired doneness and relaxes the muscle fibres letting the
juices go back into the meat. If a steak is bleeding onto a plate or if you cut into a steak
and the blood flows freely it has not been rested. This means that a properly cooked well
done steak is not a dried out piece of shoe leather, it just has no red in the meat.
7. Lastly, if you are going to cut a steak for your guests cut it against the grain. This makes
the muscles fibres shorter, therefore tenderer.
Enjoy your grilling season while we have it! If you have any grilling questions
please contact Jeff Merrin at jeffm@calgarywinterclub.com.
Happy grilling from your Food & Beverage Team!

WHAT’S THE PLAN?
Do you ever wonder what the Strategic Plan is for the Calgary Winter Club?
A process was undertaken last fall to set the vision, mission, and priorities for the Calgary Winter Club over
the next five years. At a Board Retreat held in November of 2011, Club Management and the Board agreed to
a five year Strategic Plan that set out a detailed path for the CWC. This document summarizes the key points
of the Strategic Plan; including the Club’s Vision and Mission Statements, as well as the guiding values, goals
and performance outcomes by which the Staff have been mandated to operate the Club.
