Ladies Interclub Bonspiel
The Calgary Winter Club ladies did the Club proud at
the Ladies Interclub Bonspiel on November 15th at the
Huntington Hills Curling Club. First Place was taken in
the A Event by Michelle Ewanchuk, Audrey Buchanan,
Jennifer Scott and Joanne Godziuk. This is their second
straight year bringing the title back to the Club!
The Club was also represented at the Bonspiel by
Arthena Fleming, Marj Stewart, Lois Robostan and
Thelma Wilkinson who finished just out of the medal
standings in the A Event by finishing fourth in a very
tough field of lady curlers. This was one of the best
finishes by our ladies at the Interclub Bonspiel in a
number of years. Way to go ladies!
The Calgary Winter Club is proud to use FSC-certified paper
in the production of this newsletter, demonstrating our
commitment to the environment.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to wish all our Members, Management, Staff and their families a Happy New
Year.
As winter has settled in around us, we find ourselves past the half-way point of our Phase I Expansion Project. After listening
to some of our member’s concerns, over the past few months, I have spent a considerable amount of time at the Club doing
weekly walk-throughs and attending meetings with Club Management, our construction consultants, and our contractor. With
considerable diligence and attention from all parties, and following some challenges in the summer and fall, I am pleased to
report that the project is now progressing as we would expect. I am confident that you will find the end result to be well worth
the wait and any inconveniences that have been endured along the way. While certain components of the Expansion will be
returned to our members as they are completed, the entire project will be finished and open this fall. Upon completion, our
facility will be truly exceptional and will provide us all with membership at one of the top Private Clubs in Canada. This Club
News issue includes a detailed Expansion Update provided by Garry Lamb, Chair of our Construction Committee.
Paul and John Preston (Chandos PM) Board of Directors Tour - October 29, 2011
The Club’s Board of Directors will remain active throughout the winter months, with all of our committees working diligently
with Management to ensure the best possible future experiences and opportunities for our Members. The following committees
and individuals are currently actively working on your behalf to determine the strategic direction and future priorities for the
CWC:
• Activity Council; Jack Connell, Ron Lockhart, Gail Yester
• Communication; Barb McDonald, Patricia Quinton-Campbell, Jack Connell
• Construction; Garry Lamb, Jack Connell, Mark Stevens*, Vince Davoli*, George Brown*, Kathy McKay*
• Finance and Audit; Tim Watson, John Stiles, Blaine Lennox, Michael Davies*
• Food and Beverage; Dale Johns, Barb McDonald, Marianne Spoletini*, Tom Spoletini*, Lynn Jang*, Sarah Francis*,
• Policy; Nolan Hindmarsh, Ron Lockhart
• Retail; John Stiles
• Strategic Planning; Farouk Adatia, Garry Lamb, Dale Johns, Gail Yester, Faheem Gwadry*, Tim Watson
* Ad hoc committee members
It is Management’s role to operate the Club on a day to day basis and the Board is very pleased with the performance of our
current team. The role of the Board and the Committees is to set strategic directions, establish priorities, and to represent our
Membership to our Management Team. The CWC is a “Member’s” Club and we all have the opportunity to be a part of the
decisions that will shape our future. As always, member feedback is important to us and encouraged. Thank you to our ad hoc
committee members and our directors for giving back to our Club.
President’s Message Continued from Page 3...
If you are interested in getting involved with the governance and strategic direction of the Club, there are still a couple of
opportunities available to join a CWC Board Committee. Committee involvement provides effective experience to transition to
the Board of Directors in future years. If you have the desire to become a Director of the Club, in the next few years, we would
encourage you to consider a committee position. For more information, or to express interest in the committees and/or Board,
please contact either our CEO Kevin Boyles, or myself.
As this is the season to reflect on the past year, I am honored to be the President of our Club and to be working with such a
dedicated group of professionals on our Board as well as a hardworking and committed Management Team. As members we
are blessed to have such a great Club that is an extension of our homes. Thank you for being patient, supportive and
maintaining a positive attitude during our construction phase and please continue to use the Club as often as you can.
Happy New Year to our entire CWC Family!
This edition of the Club News marks the completion of my first full year as your CEO. For me, the year has rushed by in a
heartbeat and was highlighted by many good times, a few big challenges, but never a dull day at work. As a fellow Club
member, it continues to be a pleasure and an honour to be the CEO of this wonderful place that is such a big part of all of our
lives.
Much of our focus this fall was spent on working through the challenges and growing pains of our extensive renovation and
Expansion. Unfortunately, the fall ended on a tragic note for the entire CWC staff. We lost a valued colleague and good friend
when Clarence Dang, from our Members Services team, died on November 27, 2011. Clarence had a huge impact on all who
knew him and he will be both sadly missed and fondly remembered. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Clarence’s family,
friends and co-workers.
Looking ahead to the New Year, there is a growing excitement and energy around the Club. Our staff is currently planning for
the fantastic new opportunities and experiences that we will be able to offer you as the result of the Expansion. The
Registration Guide for Fall 2013 will include many new offerings such as hot yoga, gymnastics, climbing, music, basketball,
volleyball and much, much more.
Jeff Merrin, our new Food & Beverage Manager, has had the opportunity to settle into his role and has a number of great
things in store for our Members. Along with improving the quality and value of all of our food offerings, Jeff has many ideas to
improve the social opportunities at the Club. Be sure to check out the new events advertised throughout this issue of Club News
and watch for a full 2012 Social Calendar to be released in the next edition. We hope that things like wine tastings, Sunday
brunches and social gatherings will all become a much greater component of our Club’s culture.
As you read this note, we expect that we will be back skating and curling again, the spin studio will be back upstairs (although
still in a temporary location) and that we will have returned the 55 Plus area to its rightful occupants. Please feel welcome to
stop by our renovated Administration area anytime; your Management Team is always happy to chat with you and to hear your
thoughts and feedback.
In the coming months, we hope to offer behind the scenes Sunday afternoon hard-hat tours for Members who are interested in a
sneak-peak of the new Expansion areas. Watch for announcements in Club Connections to take part in these opportunities.
2012 is guaranteed to be an exciting and eventful year for the Calgary Winter Club. On behalf of your entire Staff, please
accept our best wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous year.
a mEssagE From thE dirEctor
I would like to thank you all for your warm welcome into my
new Skating Director position. It has been a busy month
organizing for the return of our CWC ice and ensuring the
success for the completion of the skating season. I would like
to take this opportunity to fill you in on the direction of our
skating section. As Skating Director, I am responsible for all
skating activities that take place on our CWC rink. This
includes Figure Skating, Hockey and recreational skates for
all members. As a figure skater myself, my goal is to share
the joy of putting on skates and getting on the ice with
everyone.
Our figure skating club is very strong and our skaters prove
to be great ambassadors for the club, however, we need to
encourage our future hockey stars and pond skaters. It gives
me great pleasure to announce that Thomas Labelle will be
returning as our Head Hockey Pro. We plan on building a
strong Hockey Skills program and possibly some “new”
programs up and coming, so stay tuned for more information.
I will also be looking into developing ideas for Family Skate
and themed events. Feel free to stop by with any suggestions
you may have as to how you would like to see our ice used
and how we can encourage you, the members, to bring your
families out to skate. I am excited to be given this opportunity
to reenergize this great winter activity.
dirEctors tip
Tis’ the season… as we head into the cooler months, please
remember that this is the opportune time to bundle up and get
the family outdoors for some fun pond skating
activities. You should not bring your “best” skates to the
pond. If you only have one pair of skates, then consider
getting them sharpened after you have been on the pond ice.
When you head back to the indoor rinks you will notice how
dull your skates are from all of the dirt, rocks etc. that you
have been skating on out there on the pond. Many of you
have outside rinks in your community or perhaps your own
back yard. Did you know that Bowness Park has an amazing
outdoor lagoon that freezes over in the winter months? It is
equipped with bon fires and benches to warm your tootsies
and sit to have a warm drink. Instead of complaining about
how terrible road conditions are or “what’s with the snow?”
let’s embrace this beautiful time of year and get out there and
SKATE!

Update #6
This is the sixth formal Expansion Update and
we will continue to provide regular updates
until the project is completed in the fall of 2012.
Be sure to have your e-mail address registered
with the Club to receive weekly information and
important Member Construction Alerts.
There has been a significant amount of progress
over the last two months and from a timeperspective;
we are now past the half-way point
of the project. In terms of milestones, as this
edition of Club News prints, we will be:
1. 100% complete in terms of the installation of
all of our structural steel.
2. Making ice again in both our curling and
skating facilities.
3. Back upstairs for spin classes
(although still in temporary quarters).
4. In the process of moving the
administrative offices back upstairs and
returning the 55+ area back to our seniors
(thanks for your patience!).
5. Nearing completion of the main Expansion
structure and moving on to things like
windows, roofs and interior finishing work.
The view from the new third level running track is
spectacular and we can look forward to enjoying
unobstructed views of the Rockies to the West, the
horizon past the airport to the East and downtown
Calgary to the South. With the panoramic views and
excellent facilities, we are certain that these new
areas will become much loved features of our Club.
In mid-November, we reclaimed about 40
parking stalls up near the social entrance.
Expansion U pdatEs
Early in January, and just in time for the return of
curling and skating, we anticipate regaining one
more row of parking; as we will be able to park on
top of our new locker room areas, while finishing
work continues underneath. This should gain us
about 20 more stalls, but our parking challenges
are likely to continue until the completion of the
Expansion in the fall of 2012.
Excavation has begun behind tennis for the
areas that will eventually become the new tennis
building and additional parking stalls, but in the
short term will be the construction staging site.
The contractors will prep and park in this area
while working on the main building.
Our next inconvenience will be coming in the
locker areas, as mechanical and electrical work
will require access through both the men’s and
women’s change rooms. The contractors are
currently planning the details of this stage of
the project and we will be working closely with
all the trades to minimize member disruptions.
There will be some challenges, and we thank you
in advance for your patience and understanding.
The new locker room areas are currently
scheduled for completion sometime in March.
Good weather throughout the fall, and the
concerted efforts of the entire construction team
have helped to move the project along, and we
appear to be on track for our planned grand
opening in September.
We would like to thank members for their
patience during construction, particularly during
the winter months, which are the highest Club
usage periods of the year.
sEa lions updatE
You may have noticed that the Sea Lions
hosted their annual Winter Cup at the end of
November. As part of Swim Alberta, it is
mandated that we host swim meets for the
Southern Region. Our Winter Cup is very well received
through out the swim community and we would like to thank
all members for their patience while the cold pool was closed
for the weekend. We would also like to thank the staff of the
Club for their hard work to help make our meets successful.
The biggest thank-you of all, though, must go to our parents.
It takes 180 volunteer positions to run our meet, and Sea Lion
parents fill most of them. Not only are they there during the
meet, but also they take courses on how to run the meets and
prepare weeks ahead to make sure everything goes smoothly.
We will be hosting two other smaller meets this year and will
help the Clippers run their swim meet as well, so the parents
will still have more shifts to do. Swim parents truly are
first-class volunteers!
Our coaches have been training our swimmers hard; the
senior swimmers even swam during their Christmas holidays
and the results of all the hard work have been showing up
in personal bests and the A, B and qualifying times that our
swimmers are getting. Way to go Sea Lions!
sEa spritEs updatE
Sea Sprites are having great success in the
beginning part of the year with 8 top 10
finishes in the first 2 competitions of the
year! A HUGE thank you to all the parents
that volunteered at the November Figures meet. It was a big
success and we couldn’t have done it without you!
Our 13 - 15 team is hard at work preparing for trials for
Alberta Winter Games.
Fun was had by all at the Swan and Anchor evening... Our
swimmers and their Dad’s did a great job!!
We’re working hard for a very successful synchro season! Go
The annual Junior Jester’s was once again hosted by the
Canada as a core event meaning the entry list is much
stronger than for a regular junior tournament provincially.
With over 150 of the best juniors in Canada in attendance
competition was always going to be fierce. Our juniors
performed admirably coming out with the best results of any
of the clubs taking part. Particular note should go to
Hannah Treleaven, Noel Heaton and Jay Peris who won
their events; Jarrett Peris who was second in his; and
William Kuhn, Brett Schille, Graham Kerford and Tyson
Schille who came third in theirs.
the More You Move, the Better You Feel!
By Kelly Skeavington – Forever Fit Coordinator
Welcome to a brand new year full of exciting possibilities!
Now is the time to incorporate physical activity into your life.
It’s one of the most important things you can do as you get
older to maintain your physical health, your mental health
and your quality of life. Walking, stretching and keeping your
muscles in good condition will help you maintain your
independence and it can help offset many of the effects of
certain diseases and disabling conditions.
Getting started is easier than you think!
• Build physical activity into your daily routine
• Do the activities you’re doing now, more often
• Walk wherever and whenever you can
• Start slowly with easy stretching
• Move around frequently
• Take the stairs instead of the elevator
• Find activities you enjoy
• Take a class at the Calgary Winter Club!
New Forever Fit class schedules will be posted around the
club. Take a drop-in class or register for a specialized class.
Just do it! Don’t delay – be active every day!
arE you onE oF thE 30% oF oldEr adults at risk For a Fall?
Submitted by Jackie St.George-Rennie Physiotherapist, Calgary Winter Club Physiotherapy Clinic
Adapted from “Fall Prevention”; the Canadian Physiotherapy Association
Yes, statistics show that approximately 30% of older adults will fall at least once a year and injury will occur in 50% of those
who do fall.
Falls are not a normal part of aging, but physical changes that occur with aging can increase the risk of falling. These changes
can include a decline in muscle strength and flexibility, slower balance reflexes and vision problems. Diseases such as arthritis,
stroke and inner ear problems, and some medications may also contribute to a fall.
what can you do?
1. Try to be physically active everyday to improve your posture,
muscle strength and balance.
2. Have your vision and hearing checked each year.
3. Wear a good pair of lace-up shoes. High heels and slippers can
increase the risk of slipping and losing your balance.
4. Use an aid such as a cane or walker for walking if necessary and
view them as tools that will help you maintain your health and
not as a sign of weakness.
5. Make your home safer:
• Improve the lighting in your home
• Remove things that you can trip over from stairs and places
where you walk
• Have handrails installed and adequate lighting on all
staircases
• Remove throw rugs or use double sided tape to keep rugs
from slipping
• Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on the shower floor
• Have grab bars installed next to the toilet and in the tub or
shower
• Be mindful around pets at your feet as they can cause you to
trip
• Keep paths and driveways clear of snow and ice in the winter
If you would like more guidelines or even a few simple exercises to help you prevent a fall, stop by the Physiotherapy Clinic in
the Fitness and Lifestyle Center. We will be happy to help you stay injury free!
Modality Spotlight: Pregnancy Massage
By Kris Gregory
With an estimated 18,000 babies to be born in Alberta in 2011
and approximately 9,000 of them in Calgary alone, there will
be no doubt that many expectant women will be needing a
good relaxing massage to help them.
Pregnancy massage has many benefits to an expectant
mother. There are so many exciting changes in a pregnant
body, both physically and physiologically. Massage is an
excellent means of reducing stress, and reducing the aches
and pains of the changing body.
Pregnancy massage is relaxing, helps to release muscle
tension, and promotes better circulation. The massage can
help to reduce edema (swelling) in the legs and hands. The
low back and gluteal muscles in mid-pregnancy can become
irritated, and will persist through to the end of the pregnancy.
Regular maintenance massage can provide a reduction in the
chances of developing the very common and painful
pregnancy sciatica.
At the beginning of each massage, the position for the
massage will be decided, as this can change from week to
week. For the first 14 weeks, regular prone position is
permitted in most pregnancies. For the remainder of the
pregnancy either using Body Cushions or the side-lying
position is a safe and comfortable alternative.
If the pregnancy is high risk, massage is still a possibility.
In some cases, a note from your doctor may be required. All
necessary precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of
both the baby and the mother.
Postpartum massage is a welcome treat as the body slowly
returns to normal. Neck and backaches associated with breast
feeding are quickly released. Kris welcomes all newborns to
be at the massage with mom if she likes. The massage table
can be moved against the wall with the baby lying beside
mom. In this situation, only the side lying position can be used.
Pregnancy massage is an essential part of your pre-natal care.
Organic Wine:
What should you knoW?
By Paul Martzoukos, soMMelier
This past Spring I spent a bit of time in the south of France at the
worlds only Organic Wine Show, Millesime Bio, and I would like to share
with you something that I learned from this outstanding show about
Organic wines.
Now I confess I have had my doubts about the Organic wine movement.
In the 90’s when organic wines started hitting the shelves, you
were clearly paying a premium to purchase a wine that was grown
“organically”. Further, there were groups of people who followed the
teachings of Rudolf Steiner and his Bio-Dynamics theories. Many
winemakers called them crazy and felt that their practices were
unnecessary and were essentially marketing driven.
To clarify, Organics is the absence of chemical additives such as
herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. In Bio-dynamics you take
it one step further by ‘feeding’ the soil with a number of prescribed
treatments, and doing so in alignment with the cycles of the moon. The
aim is to create a healthier, more biologically diverse soil for the plants
to grow in. This in conjunction with practices that encourage the
presence of beneficial plants and “bugs”, means the overall environment
is healthier, leading to healthier and more disease resistant vines.
While in France I visited an Organic producer who gave me great
perspective on this whole situation. He said that these pioneers
worked out the kinks and figured out how to improve the health of the
vineyard, produce better fruit, and do it all economically enough to be
viable. Their challenge was that though these visionaries were great
grape growers most were only average winemakers. The result were
wines that did not quite deliver the quality of conventionally grown
grapes at a given price point.
How times have changed. The body of knowledge available to grape
growers now is impressive. And winemakers have jumped on board.
The fact is, a healthier vineyard producers better fruit, and good
winemakers can convert these into outstanding wines that are at least
as good as a conventionally produced wine at a given price point.
Perhaps the biggest challenge facing organic producers is the
frustrating lack of consistency in certification. No two certification
organizations have the same standards and there are dozens of
organizations. Many producers refuse to become certified, and many
more use organic practices without making mention of them.
The future is bright for this movement. What was obvious to me at
Millesime Bio was that the wines are getting better and better. Healthy
vineyards produce better wines and each year these vineyards are
getting healthier. Certainly the arguments for organics and bio-dynamics
are becoming almost impossible to ignore. And you can now enjoy
outstanding organic wines at great prices; how can you argue with that!
Skating Professionals
Tina-Marie yenna | Director of Skating
When Tina-Maria Yenna started at the Calgary Winter Club in 2009 she was hired on as a part time figure
skating coach. It didn’t take long for Tina-Marie to grab the attention of not only the members but her
colleagues and the Club’s senior managers as well. In just a few short months Tina-Marie moved from a part
time figure skating coach to a full time administrator and figure skating professional. Tina-Marie’s attention to
detail, energy and dedication is now the driving force behind the entire Skating Section.
Prior to coming to the Calgary Winter Club, Tina-Marie was on tour with Disney on Ice for a period of twelve
months. This was an extremely fun and exciting time for Tina-Marie; traveling the world and doing what she
loves to do - skate! “The perks and the opportunity to travel the world really made living out of a suitcase
worth it for those twelve months,” states Yenna. Tina-Marie got into Disney on Ice at a Canadian National
competition where she was scouted to join the team. After a successful and rewarding experience Tina-Marie
returned to Calgary; she knew that Calgary was always going to be her home base.
Down the road Tina-Marie does see a great deal of positive growth happening at the Club, “I would like to
turn the CWC into a competitive Skating Club, and bring a little more oomph to the entire Skating Section,”
states Yenna.
The Calgary Winter Club is extremely lucky to have Tina-Marie Yenna as the Director of Skating. Tina-Marie
comes to work every day with a smile on her face and enjoys working with each member to help them realize
their skating potential. “I strive to help each skater be the absolute best they can be,” states Yenna. The
Calgary Winter Club has always had a great Skating Section, with dedicated professionals and enthusiastic
skaters, and with Tina-Marie leading the team there is no telling what heights can be reached!
linda Higgins | Artistic Coordinator/Skating Professional
Linda Higgins has been a member of the Calgary Winter Club Skating team for over ten years and has taught
everything from group and private lessons to high level competitive testing. Linda really loves the creative
and artistic aspect of skating; she loves to see things develop into the bigger picture.
Linda skated competitively for over 7 years and also had the privilege of skating with Disney on Ice and
the Ice Capades from 2001 until the end of 2002. Her experience and background provided her with the
knowledge and teaching skills to help bring our young skaters to the next level. “With anything you do, the
more you practice, the more comfortable it becomes. This is when you really start to see the rewards of your
hard work,” states Higgins.
Moving forward Linda would like to see the Club, and our skaters, really utilize the facilities that are available.
“There is so much potential with the Fitness Centre and studios that our skaters can really benefit from,”
states Higgins. The Club is very fortunate to have the creativity and experience that Linda brings to the table
and our skaters will continue to grow and learn under her teaching and direction.
natasha Taylor | Skating Professional
Natasha Taylor came to the Calgary Winter Club approximately 4 years ago as an administrator, payroll
assistant and Skating Coach. Natasha has incredible skating talents and is a key contributor to our Skating
Section. Currently Natasha teaches private lessons and some spin classes; she also coaches the Junior Group
and the Figure 8 Club.
During her time here at the Calgary Winter Club, Natasha has had the opportunity to compete in some very
high level competitions. In 2009 Natasha competed at the Canadian Nationals, in the Triathlon division, which
combines free skate, interpretive and skating skills all into one multi-segmented event. Natasha also had the
privilege to represent Canada at the 2010 World Adult Championships in the same event. Way to Go Natasha!
Natasha has a special place in her heart for the kids at the Calgary Winter Club, and this is one of the main
reasons why she loves teaching here. “I love the kids at the Club and the access to ice time is a real bonus
when teaching all of our students,” states Taylor. With Natasha’s wide range of skating skills and knowledge
the Junior Skaters at the Club are in very good hands.
