It has been a busy month organizing for the return of our CWC ice and ensuring the success for the completion of the skating season. I would like to take this opportunity to fill you in on the direction of our skating section. As Skating Director, I am responsible for all skating activities that take place on our CWC rink. This includes Figure Skating, Hockey and recreational skates for all members. As a figure skater myself, my goal is to share the joy of putting on skates and getting on the ice with everyone. Our figure skating club is very strong and our skaters prove to be great ambassadors for the club, however, we need to encourage our future hockey stars and pond skaters. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Thomas Labelle will be returning as our Head Hockey Pro. We plan on building a strong Hockey Skills program and possibly some “new” programs up and coming, so stay tuned for more information. I will also be looking into developing ideas for Family Skate and themed events. Feel free to stop by with any suggestions you may have as to how you would like to see our ice used and how we can encourage you, the members, to bring your families out to skate. You should not bring your “best” skates to the pond. If you only have one pair of skates, then consider getting them sharpened after you have been on the pond ice. When you head back to the indoor rinks you will notice how dull your skates are from all of the dirt, rocks etc. that you have been skating on out there on the pond. Many of you have outside rinks in your community or perhaps your own back yard. Did you know that Bowness Park has an amazing outdoor lagoon that freezes over in the winter months? It is equipped with bon fires and benches to warm your tootsies and sit to have a warm drink. Instead of complaining about how terrible road conditions are or “what’s with the snow?” let’s embrace this beautiful time of year and get out there and SKATE!
Update #6 This is the sixth formal Expansion Update and we will continue to provide regular updates until the project is completed in the fall of 2012. Be sure to have your e-mail address registered with the Club to receive weekly information and important Member Construction Alerts. There has been a significant amount of progress over the last two months and from a timeperspective; we are now past the half-way point of the project. In terms of milestones, as this edition of Club News prints, we will be: 1. 100% complete in terms of the installation of all of our structural steel. 2. Making ice again in both our curling and skating facilities. 3. Back upstairs for spin classes (although still in temporary quarters). 4. In the process of moving the administrative offices back upstairs and returning the 55+ area back to our seniors (thanks for your patience!). 5. Nearing completion of the main Expansion structure and moving on to things like windows, roofs and interior finishing work. The view from the new third level running track is spectacular and we can look forward to enjoying unobstructed views of the Rockies to the West, the horizon past the airport to the East and downtown Calgary to the South. With the panoramic views and excellent facilities, we are certain that these new areas will become much loved features of our Club. In mid-November, we reclaimed about 40 parking stalls up near the social entrance. Expansion U pdatEs Early in January, and just in time for the return of curling and skating, we anticipate regaining one more row of parking; as we will be able to park on top of our new locker room areas, while finishing work continues underneath. This should gain us about 20 more stalls, but our parking challenges are likely to continue until the completion of the Expansion in the fall of 2012. Excavation has begun behind tennis for the areas that will eventually become the new tennis building and additional parking stalls, but in the short term will be the construction staging site. The contractors will prep and park in this area while working on the main building. Our next inconvenience will be coming in the locker areas, as mechanical and electrical work will require access through both the men’s and women’s change rooms. The contractors are currently planning the details of this stage of the project and we will be working closely with all the trades to minimize member disruptions. There will be some challenges, and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. The new locker room areas are currently scheduled for completion sometime in March. Good weather throughout the fall, and the concerted efforts of the entire construction team have helped to move the project along, and we appear to be on track for our planned grand opening in September.
