a mEssagE From thE dirEctor<br />

I would like to thank you all for your warm welcome into my<br />

new Skating Director position. It has been a busy month<br />

organizing for the return of our CWC ice and ensuring the<br />

success for the completion of the skating season. I would like<br />

to take this opportunity to fill you in on the direction of our<br />

skating section. As Skating Director, I am responsible for all<br />

skating activities that take place on our CWC rink. This<br />

includes Figure Skating, Hockey and recreational skates for<br />

all members. As a figure skater myself, my goal is to share<br />

the joy of putting on skates and getting on the ice with<br />

everyone.<br />

Our figure skating club is very strong and our skaters prove<br />

to be great ambassadors for the club, however, we need to<br />

encourage our future hockey stars and pond skaters. It gives<br />

me great pleasure to announce that Thomas Labelle will be<br />

returning as our Head Hockey Pro. We plan on building a<br />

strong Hockey Skills program and possibly some “new”<br />

programs up and coming, so stay tuned for more information.<br />

I will also be looking into developing ideas for Family Skate<br />

and themed events. Feel free to stop by with any suggestions<br />

you may have as to how you would like to see our ice used<br />

and how we can encourage you, the members, to bring your<br />

families out to skate. I am excited to be given this opportunity<br />

to reenergize this great winter activity.<br />

We are pleased to announce that Grace Johnson is the<br />

deserving recipient of the skater of the month award for<br />

November. Grace sets goals and focuses on them until she<br />

accomplishes them. She puts in extra time when able to do so<br />

and has a great work ethic on the ice. Grace always possesses<br />

a positive attitude and is a great listener. Well done, Grace!<br />

dirEctors tip<br />

Tis’ the season… as we head into the cooler months, please<br />

remember that this is the opportune time to bundle up and get<br />

the family outdoors for some fun pond skating<br />

activities. You should not bring your “best” skates to the<br />

pond. If you only have one pair of skates, then consider<br />

getting them sharpened after you have been on the pond ice.<br />

When you head back to the indoor rinks you will notice how<br />

dull your skates are from all of the dirt, rocks etc. that you<br />

have been skating on out there on the pond. Many of you<br />

have outside rinks in your community or perhaps your own<br />

back yard. Did you know that Bowness Park has an amazing<br />

outdoor lagoon that freezes over in the winter months? It is<br />

equipped with bon fires and benches to warm your tootsies<br />

and sit to have a warm drink. Instead of complaining about<br />

how terrible road conditions are or “what’s with the snow?”<br />

let’s embrace this beautiful time of year and get out there and<br />

SKATE!
